Holistic Well-Being And Humanitarian Workers During Covid-19: Concepts, Challenges, And Recommendations, Nicholas Sherwood Dec 2021

Holistic Well-Being And Humanitarian Workers During Covid-19: Concepts, Challenges, And Recommendations, Nicholas Sherwood

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated conflict dynamics and humanitarian disasters around the world, including Syria, Yemen, and East Africa. Humanitarian efforts designed to address these dynamics and disasters are also falling prey to the fallout of COVID, most notably increases in psychological distress experienced by humanitarian workers (HW) operating on the front lines of humanitarian zones. As such, new and innovative practices must be explored to support HW as they continue their desperately needed work; this imperative is further bolstered by calls in international human rights-based documents (e.g., Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant …

The Shortcomings Of Corporate Accountability In Post-Conflict Colombia: Land, Rivers And Animals, Isabella Ariza Buitrago, Luisa Gomez Betancur Dec 2021

The Shortcomings Of Corporate Accountability In Post-Conflict Colombia: Land, Rivers And Animals, Isabella Ariza Buitrago, Luisa Gomez Betancur

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Although the notion of sustainable peace requires acknowledging the role played by all actors, transitional processes around the world have inadequately addressed or completely ignored the direct and indirect participation of economic actors. In particular, Colombia's transitional justice regime left out corporations entirely. A skillshare between Colombian lawyers and US-based human rights attorneys showed some of the gaps that let corporations continue in impunity for profiting, benefiting from, or directly financing the conflict. Other than harming and deeply fracturing communities, the shortcomings of corporate accountability in post-conflict Colombia also leave land, rivers, and animals without redress. This paper explores some …

Documenting Human Rights Violations: An Analysis Of Press Reporting On The Mexican Disappearance Crisis, Maria Terra, Yolanda Burckhardt Dec 2021

Documenting Human Rights Violations: An Analysis Of Press Reporting On The Mexican Disappearance Crisis, Maria Terra, Yolanda Burckhardt

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

The global pandemic has transformed many structures, including the way in which human rights academics and practitioners carry out their work. This project is an example of human rights research using methods that can be applied remotely from any part of the world, and even replicated in other contexts or experiences.

The initiative is one of the projects from the Observatory on Disappearances and Impunity in Mexico led by Barbara Frey (University of Minnesota), Leigh Payne (Oxford University), and Karina Ansolabehere (UNAM-México), focused on the enforced disappearances crisis occurring in Mexico. The work included an extensive database created by coding …

Does Human Rights Derogation Limit Covid-19 Infections?, Brian K. Gran, Reema Sen Dec 2021

Does Human Rights Derogation Limit Covid-19 Infections?, Brian K. Gran, Reema Sen

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

The purpose of this project is to model and understand socio-legal responses to the spread of COVID-19—in particular, emergency measures that derogate from states’ human rights commitments. Derogation of human rights in response to COVID-19 is unprecedented, according to some experts (Scheinin 2020). This project investigates whether combinations of conditions, such as moderate human rights derogation in combination with strong health infrastructures, reduce degrees of virus transmission and promote prevention. Its preliminary findings indicate that suspension of some rights appears crucial to limiting COVID-19 infections, but suspension of many rights has limited impacts, raising questions for practices of human rights …

The Effects Of Israeli Settlements On Palestinians In The West Bank Narratives Of Suffering: Turning The Invisible, Visible, Jessica Kathleen Durant

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The results of dehumanising the Other can be catastrophic; exemplified by the extreme brutality of colonisation, the Holocaust and the current violence perpetrated against Palestinians. All carried out in the name of â we' the superior, humane against â them' the â inhumane', the â less than'. This thesis argues that the legal rights regime legitimises the creation of the inhuman â Other' and is thereby implicated in the continuation of the violence against â them'. Thirteen interviews were carried out with Palestinians who lived near settlements in the West Bank. The interviews were in the form of semi-structured conversations, …

Metagenomic Assessment Of The Mobilomes Of Red Sea's Atlantis Ii, Discovery And Kebrit Deeps, Mohamed Mohamed El Rifai Dec 2021

Metagenomic Assessment Of The Mobilomes Of Red Sea's Atlantis Ii, Discovery And Kebrit Deeps, Mohamed Mohamed El Rifai

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Mobile genetic elements in microbial communities are mainly composed of plasmids, transposons and viruses. They are collectively referred to as the mobilome and serve as agents that facilitate horizontal gene transfer, which plays an important role in evolution and adaptation of microorganisms. In order to study the abundance and distribution of mobile genetic elements in different marine environments and to clarify whether certain environmental conditions could explain such distribution, sequence similarity searches using protein family signatures against diverse marine metagenomic datasets were used to determine the relative frequency of coding sequences associated with transposases, integrases, plasmids and viruses, or phages. …

Abolition Constitutionalism And Non-Reformist Reform: The Case For Ending Pretrial Detention, René Reyes Dec 2021

Abolition Constitutionalism And Non-Reformist Reform: The Case For Ending Pretrial Detention, René Reyes

Connecticut Law Review

The prison abolition movement encompasses a range of objectives and perspectives. While dismantling the carceral system may be the ultimate goal, incremental steps can be an important component of this long-term project. This Essay makes a case for the constitutional elimination of pretrial detention as one part of an incremental abolitionist agenda. The analysis pays particular attention to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s recent decision in Commonwealth v. Lougee, which illustrates some of the ways in which the COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated preexisting injustices and inequities in the pretrial detention system. Although Lougee itself affords only limited avenues of relief …

The Relationship Between Color Shade And Emotion Association In Pre-School Aged Children, Emily Miles, Leilani B. Goodmon, Gianna M. Del Monte, Trey Saunders Dec 2021

The Relationship Between Color Shade And Emotion Association In Pre-School Aged Children, Emily Miles, Leilani B. Goodmon, Gianna M. Del Monte, Trey Saunders

Modern Psychological Studies

Color choices can be emotion-driven (Jonauskaite et al., 2019). Because there is evidence that the color shade - emotion association may develop through socialization and enculturation, the current purpose was to determine if color shade was associated with emotion in very young children (i.e., preschoolers) who have experienced lower levels of socialization / enculturation. Participants were read a story about a happy, sad, or angry character and were then asked to pick specific crayons to color a picture of the story character. Inconsistent with the hypotheses, emotion depicted in the story did not correlate with color shade choice (e.g., lighter …

Life After Divorce Is Not A Bed Of Roses: Experience Of Upper Middle Class Egyptians, Samiha Salah El-Refaey Dec 2021

Life After Divorce Is Not A Bed Of Roses: Experience Of Upper Middle Class Egyptians, Samiha Salah El-Refaey

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Around the world, in both developed and developing countries equally, divorce rates have increased tremendously during the twentieth century, regardless of the world's diversified cultures, religions, value systems, etc, making divorce a universal modern phenomenon. With older generations, women would have rather maintained a miserable marriage than endure the tragedies of dissolving one. This thesis investigates the changing attitudes towards divorce along with the underlying causes for its skyrocketing rates in the world generally and in Egypt, specifically. I frame a comparison between older and younger generations who have experienced both marriage and divorce. I used two theoretical approaches to …

The Effectiveness Of The United Nations' Use Of Communication To Achieve Development Results: A Genuine Shift From Top-Down To Bottom-Up Development Approach? A Case Study From Egypt, Karim Wafik Ezzeldin

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on â communication for development' concepts and initiatives, in an attempt to, first, investigate the limits of the UN's perceived shift from a top-down to a bottom-up development approach, and secondly, to evaluate the degree and extent of the effectiveness of its communication efforts to achieve development results. The main hypothesis is that communication, as a tool used to achieve development objectives, remains vastly underutilized within the UN system, partly owing to the lack of adopting a genuine people-centred, bottom-up approach in favour of top-down global strategies. The thesis first embarks on a review of the evolution …

One of the new emerging debatable topics is protection of Internally Displaced Persons [IDPs] from suppression of their governments. The topic has not been discussed extensively. Writings that discuss protection of IDPs are not extensive and discuss it rhetorically without defining protection mechanisms. This thesis adds to the ongoing discussion by defining and examining these protection mechanisms. It will include the emergence of new concepts like â â human securityâ â and â â responsibility to protectâ â which have changed the conceptualization of state sovereignty. The thesis will use Darfur as a case study a place where many scholars …
