Cut From A Different Cloth: Middle-Class Women And The Chicago Men's Garment Workers' Strike Of 1910-1911, Cameron H. Simpson Dec 2021

Cut From A Different Cloth: Middle-Class Women And The Chicago Men's Garment Workers' Strike Of 1910-1911, Cameron H. Simpson

Honors Capstones

The Chicago men’s garment workers began a strike in late 1910 that extended through the winter into 1911 and began among women and people of immigrant backgrounds, only incorporating men once it picked up steam. The lack of uniformity among the striking workers led to a fragmented approach to the strike and eventually, middle-class women came to the aid of factory workers and took over organization of the strike. My thesis sheds light on how and why the women involved in this strike made their marks on Chicago labor history, both through their organizing and through their philanthropic work.

Assessing And Improving Political Learning And Engagement On College Campuses, Catherine A. Copeland, Leah Murray

eJournal of Public Affairs

The American Association for State Colleges and University’s (AASCU’s) American Democracy Project (ADP) and the Institute for Democracy and Higher Education (IDHE), located at Tufts University’s Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life, formed a three-year partnership to pilot a process for fostering institutional change to advance political learning and engagement on college campuses. The multidimensional approach to collecting information, deploying dialogues, and crafting interventions provided insight into the necessity of generating institutional support for civic engagement initiatives.

This article reviews the goals, plan, and process of this three-year, multi-phased initiative. We weave throughout the results of multi-stage evaluations of …

Policy Implications Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Food Security In Rural America: Evidence From Appalachia, Kathryn M. Cardarelli, Emily M. Dewitt, Rachel Gillespie, Rachel Hogg-Graham, Heather Norman-Burgdolf, Janet T. Mullins

Dietetics and Human Nutrition Faculty Publications

Rural communities are disproportionally affected by food insecurity, making them vulnerable to the consequences of supply disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While access to food was initially diminished due to food supply disruptions, little is known about the mechanisms through which federal emergency assistance programs impacted food access in rural populations. Through a series of five focus groups in spring 2021, we examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food access in a rural Appalachian community in Kentucky. Data were analyzed using a Grounded Theory Approach. Findings revealed the following four primary themes: food scarcity in grocery stores; …

Enhancing Civic Engagement Through Leadership Education, Lori E. Kniffin, Sonalini Sapra Dec 2021

Enhancing Civic Engagement Through Leadership Education, Lori E. Kniffin, Sonalini Sapra

eJournal of Public Affairs

Many civic engagement courses require students to work with community members to make progress on complex problems, which in itself can be a practice of leadership. Yet there is little evidence that leadership development is strategically incorporated in civic engagement courses. Therefore, we taught eight leadership sessions over two semesters in the Principled Problem Solving Scholars Program at Guilford College. This study examines the perceived impact of leadership curriculum on the personal practices of leadership and the civic engagement for 14 undergraduate students. We present the findings through three themes highlighting (1) the shifts in the students’ philosophies of leadership …

Accessibility As A Foundation For An Equitable Digital Civic Engagement Infrastructure, Allison D. Rank, Rebecca Mushtare Dec 2021

Accessibility As A Foundation For An Equitable Digital Civic Engagement Infrastructure, Allison D. Rank, Rebecca Mushtare

eJournal of Public Affairs

Individuals and organizations in both higher education and civic engagement have become increasingly aware of their obligation to foster a sense of belonging among students and support historically under-represented populations within their work. As part of this effort, we argue the civic engagement infrastructure—a term we use to capture the full range of organizations and associated resources directed toward improving civic engagement within higher education that stem from actors both on and off campus—must pay more attention to digital accessibility. We document this need by establishing the degree higher education institutions rely on off-campus organizations and resources in civic engagement …

Legislators’ Perceptions Of Public University Student Lobbying Efforts On Public Higher Education Legislation: A Case Study, James J. Krotz, Lisa M. Rubin Dec 2021

Legislators’ Perceptions Of Public University Student Lobbying Efforts On Public Higher Education Legislation: A Case Study, James J. Krotz, Lisa M. Rubin

eJournal of Public Affairs

College students have a legitimate interest in many policy issues that affect their campuses, but are they effective in lobbying their state representatives for their interests? Elected members of the Kansas state legislature were surveyed to determine if student lobbyists were effective in influencing legislator’s decision-making on matters of public higher education policy in Kansas. Interest group theory was utilized as a lens to view results of legislator perceptions. Findings suggested that 70% of legislator participants never altered their view on an issue after meeting with a college student lobbyist. Responses aligned with partisan politics, with Democrats more likely to …

Civic Engagement Through Theatre: Running A Brechtian Workshop In The Classroom, Margot Morgan Dec 2021

Civic Engagement Through Theatre: Running A Brechtian Workshop In The Classroom, Margot Morgan

eJournal of Public Affairs

This study presents an innovative active learning technique to support the development of civic education: a theatrical workshop based on the dramaturgy of Bertolt Brecht. I argue that the Brechtian workshop can develop three skills necessary for effective civic engagement: perspective taking, collaboration, and critical judgment/self-reflection, and that these skills are directly tied to the three civic values of pluralism, community, and civic responsibility. Using qualitative data gathered in the course of teaching this workshop to two distinct student populations — a self-selecting group of students in a liberal arts environment and a group of students at a commuter campus …

Building Capacity To Alleviate Poverty Through National Service: An Evaluation Plan Guided By Community Partner Perspectives, Laura E. Martin

eJournal of Public Affairs

This paper explores how a national service program, the Mid-South VISTA Project (MSVP), impacts community partner organizations through capacity building activities. MSVP is housed at Mid-South University and extends the community-engaged activities of campus units and while building capacity at partner organizations. The project considers dimensions of nonprofit capacity building, navigating the community-campus partnership process, and the legacy of the VISTA program. The data presented here are part of a larger case study of how programs housed at MSU’s community engagement center impact community partner organizations. Findings from interviews with fifteen VISTA supervisors guide the development of an evaluation plan …

Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Ecology In Nebraska Agroecosystems, Blessing Ademokoya Dec 2021

Stink Bug (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Ecology In Nebraska Agroecosystems, Blessing Ademokoya

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Stink bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) have gained considerable attention in Nebraska in the last decade due to increasing densities of native stink bug and spread of invasive species in the Midwest. Little is known about stink bug dynamics in Nebraska cropping systems. Based on data from a recent field survey, specimens at the University of Nebraska State Museum and the diagnostic lab of the Entomology Department at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, as well as published literature, we present a checklist of 72 species and subspecies of Pentatomidae (55 Pentatominae, 13 Asopinae, 3 Podopinae and 1 Edessinae) that occur in …

Exercise And The Brain: What Can Fit-U Do For You?, Kaitlin R. Miller Dec 2021

Exercise And The Brain: What Can Fit-U Do For You?, Kaitlin R. Miller

Honors Capstones

This project was a pilot study exploring the effects of an aerobic program, FIT-U, and factors influencing cognitive outcomes for healthy aging individuals and those with neurogenic cognitive-communicative disorders. While aerobic exercise has been shown to improve cognition in both cases, this study looked into the factors that influence this phenomenon. Three regular attendees of FIT-U were given a letter fluency test before and after FIT-U, using different letters each time, but balanced in terms of difficulty. By using single subject methodology, the data were consistent with a trend towards improved VF scores following each FIT-U session for two participants. …

Burnout Among Intensive Care Nurses, Julia Brown Dec 2021

Burnout Among Intensive Care Nurses, Julia Brown

MSN Capstone Projects

At a time when the healthcare system is experiencing strain due to the current health crisis and nursing shortages, talking about, and addressing nursing mental health is of the utmost importance. Nurses who work in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) often face more stress due to the patient population they work with. These stresses can lead to burnout and moral distress if not addressed appropriately. Nurses should have a system in place at their workplace and tools readily available to support their mental health while on the job. Through a literature search, it is proposed that an initiation of …

BACKGROUND: Cyathostomins are the most important and common parasitic nematodes of horses, with > 50 species known to occur worldwide. The frequent and indiscriminate use of anthelmintics has resulted in the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in horse nematodes. In this study we assessed the efficacy of commonly used anthelmintics against cyathostomins in Australian thoroughbred horses.

METHODS: Two drug efficacy trials per farm were conducted on two thoroughbred horse farms in the state of Victoria, Australia. In the first trial, the horses on Farm A were treated with single and combinations of anthelmintics, including oxfendazole (OFZ), abamectin (ABM), abamectin and morantel …

Over the centuries, the application of grassland and cutting of livestock are the primary foundations for
the production of food agriculture manufacturing. Growing human population, accelerated human
activities globally, staggering food inequity, changing climate, precise nutrition for extended life
expectancy, and more demand for protein food call for a new outlook to smartness in food agriculture
manufacturing for delivering nutritious food. Cellular agriculture, 3D printing of food, vertical urban
farming, and digital agriculture alongside traditional means are envisioned to transform food agriculture
and manufacturing systems for acceptability, availability, accessibility, affordability, and resiliency for meeting demands of food in this century …
