Insiders' Perspectives On The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy, Jean-Michel Lapointe, Craig Gibson, Trudi E. Jacobson
University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
This interview with the two U.S. librarians who co-chaired the Task Force that led to the creation of the Association of College & Research Libraries' Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (ACRL 2016) revisits the process of its creation as well as the reception this document has received five years after its inception. The authors retrace the main conceptual debates that have shaped the Framework and propose a typology of contemporary currents in information literacy, providing insight into the issues that inform the evolution of different conceptions of the pedagogical role of librarians in higher education from yesterday until …

Somites are important mesoderm structures that form in regularly timed intervals from the anterior end of the paraxial mesoderm at the end of gastrulation during embryogenesis. Cells of the ventromedial portion of the somite, the sclerotome, undergo epithelial to mesenchymal transition, surround the notochord, and give rise to connective tissues of the axial skeleton including the vertebrae, tendons, and ligaments. We are interested in understanding how the sclerotome is compartmentalized into the region that makes tendons. Genes expressed in the sclerotome, twist1 and twist2, are likely involved in the downstream differentiation of sclerotome to tendon progenitors. Previous studies have shown …

Michigan COVID-19 Outbreak Reports
The Outbreak Data page was obtained from Michigan's COVID-19 data page: https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/0,9753,7-406-98163_98173_102057---,00.html.
This report is created by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services from data self-reported by local health departments. Data is updated every week.
COVID-19 outbreaks are generally defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household. Local health departments report the number of new and ongoing outbreaks they are investigating by the setting of the outbreak. New outbreaks are those outbreaks that were first identified during the current reporting week. Ongoing outbreaks are …

Can Repurposing Drugs Play A Role In Malaria Control?, Roland A. Cooper, Laura Kirkman
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship
Innovative drug treatments for malaria, optimally with novel targets, are needed to combat the threat of parasite drug resistance. As drug development efforts continue, there may be a role for a host-targeting, repurposed cancer drug administered together with an artemisinin combination therapy that was shown to improve the speed of recovery from a malaria infection.

From Counting To Retrieving: Neural Networks Underlying Alphabet Arithmetic Learning, Wim Fias, Muhammet Ikbal Sahan, Daniel Ansari, Ian M. Lyons
Paediatrics Publications
This fMRI study aimed at unraveling the neural basis of learning alphabet arithmetic facts, as a proxy of the transition from slow and effortful procedural counting-based processing to fast and effortless processing as it occurs in learning addition arithmetic facts. Neural changes were tracked while participants solved alphabet arithmetic problems in a verification task (e.g., F + 4 = J). Problems were repeated across four learning blocks. Two neural networks with opposed learning-related changes were identified. Activity in a network consisting of basal ganglia and parieto-frontal areas decreased with learning, which is in line with a reduction of the involvement …

Global Health Equity blog posts
16 Days of Activism aims to empower women and raise awareness about gender-based violence. This campaign has made massive strides in tackling domestic violence, a burden which many women all around the world bear. This topic is important to talk about. Women who suffer at the hands of their partners can feel isolated and stigmatized when in reality many women, some they might even know, are facing the same problem. Western society has deemed this topic “taboo,” silencing victims and in the process limiting a shift of power away from abusers.

Biomedical materials made of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys are commonly used in artificial prostheses and dental implants, which are exposed to friction and load. The release of Co, Cr, and Mo from these surfaces is governed by physical and chemical processes. The extent of measured metal release from biomedical CoCrMo alloys into mixed protein solutions may be influenced by protein aggregation and metal precipitation effects. Metal release from, and the surface composition of, a CoCrMo alloy was investigated in physiological relevant solutions (phosphate buffered saline, PBS, with varying concentrations of fibrinogen from bovine plasma and/or bovine serum albumin) at pH 7.3 …

Private prisons, like hotels, are most profitable when they are at maximum occupancy and their guests stay for longer periods of time. Because the business-model for private prisons is predicated on incarceration rates dictated by public policy, one would presume that private prison corporations expend great resources to advocating for stricter criminal laws and sentencing. This note explores the role of political lobbying and campaign contributions of private prison corporations to see if a correlative relationship exists between their advocacy and stricter crime laws. Part I of the note provides a history of private prisons in America and explores the …

Journal of Hate Studies
The Conflict Over the Conflict is an important contribution to the overall literature regarding the (seeming) turmoil on many of our college and university campuses—but not all, including my own where controversial issues surface rarely if at all—vis-à-vis the Israel/Palestine conflict, free speech and controversial speakers, and the like. Stern brings to the discussion not only his lawyerly training and his skill set, but, as of late, his directorship of the academic Bard College Center for the Study of Hate and thus combining both with a singular focus. Even more importantly, perhaps, his firm commitment to the campus as the …

The literature demonstrates many benefits of interprofessional education (IPE) simulations in various types of formats that facilitate greater student knowledge and understanding of professions outside their own (O’Hara et al., 2018; Clauser et al., 2020; Cooper, Spencer-Dawe & Mclean, 2005; Djukic et al., 2015; Lazinski et al., 2021). The goals of my doctoral capstone experience (DCE) were to: 1) Develop IPE curriculum and active learning sessions along with assessment plans for professional programs on the Nova Southeastern University (NSU) – Tampa Bay Regional Campus with emphasis on advocacy for the occupational therapy (OT) profession, 2) Lead educational opportunities for students …

Knowledge Of The Lgbtqia+ Community By Occupational Therapy Practitioners And Students, Emily A. Quick
Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
The field of occupational therapy allows for unique client-therapist relationships through its holistic, client-centered approach to therapy. Sexual orientation and gender identity are frequently overlooked client personal factors. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community have their own health risks and health disparities that are frequently not taught in a typical classroom setting. The research focus area was chosen to attempt to fill the gap in the literature of occupational therapists and occupational therapy students’ knowledge of LGBTQIA+ culture through semi-structured interviews. The education focus area was chosen to get a better understanding of the dissemination of information to occupational therapy students. …
