Enhancing Classroom Management Skills: Efficacy Of A Supplemental Multi-Platform Intervention For Preservice Teachers, Michael S. Rosenberg Phd, Sunny R. Duerr, Kate Ingraham, Karen Bell, Art Gould

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Many teachers are ill-prepared to apply practices that can both preempt and address challenging behaviors that interfere with academic instruction. We evaluated the efficacy of a supplemental multi-platform (direct instruction, guided practice, and mixed reality simulations) intervention designed for preservice teachers who do not have opportunities to participate in formal classroom management courses. Efficacy of the intervention was assessed through the quality of classroom management plans, the presentation and implementation of the plan in the virtual classroom, and classroom management self-efficacy. Results indicated that preservice teachers successfully developed quality proactive classroom management plans but struggled to present and implement their …

User Interface For Improved Fine-Grained Video Scrubbing, Wenni Zhou, Chad Sager, Matthew Darby, Viraj Mahesh, Corinne Longman

Defensive Publications Series

When watching a video, users may need to move backward or forward through the video to find a specific moment within the video. Such movement is supported by buttons in the user interface (UI) or a scrubber. However, these mechanisms are unsuitable when making a fine-grained selection of a specific moment within a video. This disclosure describes user interface techniques that make it easier for users to engage in fine-grained video scrubbing to find and move to an exact moment within video content. A fine scrubbing mode is provided that a user can enable by pulling up on the scrubber …

Is There A Disproportionate Representation Of African American Males In Special Education? A Causal-Comparative Investigation, Kiena S. Hughley, Karen H. Larwin

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership

African American male students are disproportionately represented in special education. The purpose of the current study is to examine the disproportionality of African American male students who are referred to special education programs and are identified special education services, specifically in the areas of Emotional Disturbance (ED), Specific Learning Disability (SLD), and other low incidence disabilities (OTH), which includes Speech & Language Instruction, Other Health Impaired, Autism, and Traumatic Brain Injury, in Northeast Ohio’s suburban school district for the 2017-2020 school year. The sample was drawn from a suburban school district in Northeast Ohio which consisted of six schools. Findings …

Factors Of Motivation In Education: Perspectives Of College Students And Their Professors, Caitlin Reash, Karen H. Larwin Dec 2021

Factors Of Motivation In Education: Perspectives Of College Students And Their Professors, Caitlin Reash, Karen H. Larwin

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership

This study examines motivational factors based on college students’ and faculties’ perceptions to determine which factors are most impactful. The researchers utilized Jones’ MUSIC® Model of Motivation College Student and Professor inventories. Both are designed to determine the factors that impact student motivation (Jones, 2020). The Caring factor was the highest endorsed factor by both college students and faculty in all data collections. A paired sample t-test revealed that the Usefulness factor was rated statistically different by faculty and students. These data can be used to inform programmatic decisions and course design in the university’s education department.

Principals’ Perceptions And Understandings Of Teacher Leadership, Anna Hart Dec 2021

Principals’ Perceptions And Understandings Of Teacher Leadership, Anna Hart

Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership

No singular definition of teacher leadership (TL) exists in empirical literature or practice in the field. This lack of clarity has greatly impacted the implementation of TL in American schools. The purpose of this study qualitative case study was to investigate public school principals’ perceptions and understandings of TL in an effort to better inform continued efforts toward its ubiquitous application in American schools. Principals’ definitions of TL fell into three categories: action-based, quality-based, and role-based definitions. Principals’ recognition of the work of teacher leaders in schools fell into two parallel categories: action-based and role-based leadership. Findings reveal that many …

Surviving Interlocutory Appeals: Trial Lawyer Edition, Grace Jun

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

This presentation provides an overview of Supreme Court caselaw regarding qualified immunity and government officials’ right to interlocutory appeal from denials of qualified immunity, and provides a brief discussion of ways trial lawyers can overcome interlocutory appeals to provide their injured plaintiffs with an opportunity to be heard and vindicated at trial by a jury.

Civil Rights And Protective Orders, Michael P. Doyle, Erin Brockway Dec 2021

Civil Rights And Protective Orders, Michael P. Doyle, Erin Brockway

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

“Open courts” are a bedrock principal of our judicial system, and court secrecy, including concealment of pretrial proceedings, poses a serious threat to public safety. Overbroad protective orders have concealed facts uncovered during litigation regarding some of the most important public harms, keeping them secret when the public needs protection. Protective orders routinely include provisions that allow parties to designate discovery material as “confidential” without further judicial review. These orders are often abused and result in unnecessary costs to litigants, the courts, and the public’s confidence in the court system. This is always a mistake because it harms the discovery …

Implicit Bias: Racism Without Racist, Genesis Draper Dec 2021

Implicit Bias: Racism Without Racist, Genesis Draper

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

Implicit bias is something that everyone has but many cannot identify within themselves. Judge Draper draws on caselaw, research, and anecdotes from her own career to demonstrate the ways that implicit bias can impede equitable and just court experiences for all. She argues for the importance of more diverse juries, implicit bias instruction early in the proceedings, and the use of Batson as remedies to counteract bias.

Investigating Officer Involved Shootings: Don’T Ignore The Evidence, Michael Maloney Dec 2021

Investigating Officer Involved Shootings: Don’T Ignore The Evidence, Michael Maloney

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

This presentation sheds light on a part of officer involved shootings not always discussed at a legal symposium: the potential bias that emerges at a crime scene during an investigation. The speaker explores the evidentiary challenges associated with an officer involved shooting, and describes the reconstruction project that he led as a consultant during the investigation and trial of off-duty police officer Amber Guyger, who was convicted of the murder of Botham Jean.

A Tale Of Two Americas, Laisha Harris Dec 2021

A Tale Of Two Americas, Laisha Harris

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

In 2016, we were presented with the idea that Americans may not be as United as we thought. With the events of 2020, we began to reimagine the fundamental fabric of what we believe to be the "United States of America." In this essay, I will discuss the dichotomy in the history of policing in America. To be effective in the analysis of police misconduct, you must reconcile with the uncomfortable truth embedded in our history.

Introduction To Re-Imagining “We The People" Part Two: Transcripts From The Aaj Education’S Civil Rights And Police Misconduct Litigation Seminar, Sarah Guidry

The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy

With this issue of The Bridge, we continue the discussions raised in our Spring 2021 issue: Police Misconduct & Qualified Immunity: Reimagining "We the People”, Vol.6, Issue 1. That issue shared the transcription of the virtual national conference by the same name, and featured an esteemed group of experts who discussed the state of racial unrest in this country, historically and currently. To promote further dialogue and support those who work to establish stronger protections against the use and misuse of police violence, we herein highlight several key sessions featured at the recent American Association for Justice Civil Rights and …
