Enhancing Therapeutic Approaches For Melanoma Patients Targeting Epigenetic Modifiers., Maria Gracia-Hernandez, Zuleima Munoz, Alejandro Villagra
Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications
Melanoma is the least common but deadliest type of skin cancer. Melanomagenesis is driven by a series of mutations and epigenetic alterations in oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes that allow melanomas to grow, evolve, and metastasize. Epigenetic alterations can also lead to immune evasion and development of resistance to therapies. Although the standard of care for melanoma patients includes surgery, targeted therapies, and immune checkpoint blockade, other therapeutic approaches like radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immune cell-based therapies are used for patients with advanced disease or unresponsive to the conventional first-line therapies. Targeted therapies such as the use of BRAF and …

Peer-Led Building Resilience And Enhancing Social-Emotional Skills Program, Danielle K. Enrico
Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
The purpose of the Capstone experience was to develop and implement a five-week peer-led building resilience and social-emotional skills training program at a public high school. This program addressed high school students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding resources, social-emotional skills, and resilience. A questionnaire was administered pre and post-program to measure effectiveness. The results indicated an increase in scores, demonstrating a clearer understanding in all three areas.

ENGR 333
Habitat for Humanity (HFH) requested a carbon footprint analysis of their most recent home build. Mark Ogland-Hand, a representative of HFH, connected with Professor Heun’s ENGR 333 students to perform the carbon footprint analysis on their new low carbon house. Assuming Consumer’s Energy will incorporate their predicted percentage of renewables into their electric grid, the London home reduces projected carbon emissions by 18% when compared to a “To Code” house over a 25 year lifespan. For the current Consumer’s Energy grid, the “Improved” London house is shown to reduce projected carbon emissions by 30% when compared to the current London …

Clustering Methods For The Efficient Voltage Regulation In Smart Grids, Brook Abegaz
Clustering Methods For The Efficient Voltage Regulation In Smart Grids, Brook Abegaz
Engineering Science Faculty Publications
In this paper, clustering methods are presented to enhance the stability of automatic voltage regulators using the efficient adjustment of their respective gains. The results show that implementations of some of the clustering algorithms provide better reliability and stability for the feedback-based voltage regulators as compared to the other methods, namely, a model predictive controller (MPC), a gaussian mixture model (GMM), a self-organizing mapping (SOM) and hierarchical clustering (HC) methods. Specifically, the K-Means clustering approach (KM) provided superior stability but a slower rise time of the output voltage of the voltage regulators as compared to the other methods. Furthermore, coordination …

Conference Papers
It is very kind of you to invite me to talk about User Rights at the Association’s Copyright Symposium. In ancient times, symposia were occasions to discuss and debate matters of great moment, to the accompaniment of copious food, wine, and revelry. Zoom of course limits the conduct of this symposium but I hope participants will take the ancient precedent to heart at their end of their internet connection. Sometimes a symposium would wait until the hunt for a wild boar was over before starting. I hope that was not the motive behind your organizers hunting me down for this …

Mistakes In Difficult Conversations, Allan Vyhnalek
Cornhusker Economics
Farm families that work together across the family tree and across generations seem to encounter difficulty from time to time when separating “family” from “business.” Having clear, consistent, and honest communications will go a long way towards reducing the troubles that can arise in difficult conversations. This article addresses those troubles.

Identifying the leading health and lifestyle factors for the risk of incident dementia and Alzheimer's disease has yet to translate to risk reduction. To understand why, we examined the discrepancies between observational and clinical trial evidence for seven modifiable risk factors: type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, estrogens, inflammation, omega-3 fatty acids, and hyperhomocysteinemia. Sample heterogeneity and paucity of intervention details (dose, timing, formulation) were common themes. Epidemiological evidence is more mature for some interventions (eg, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs]) than others. Trial data are promising for anti-hypertensives and B vitamin supplementation. Taken together, these risk factors highlight a future need …

Closely Related Gull Species Show Contrasting Foraging Strategies In An Urban Environment, K. A. Lato, D. J. Madigan, R. R. Veit, L. H. Thorne
Publications and Research
The expansion of urban landscapes has both negative and positive effects on wildlife. Understanding how different species respond to urbanization is key to assessing how urban landscapes influence regional wildlife behavior and ecosystem structure. Gulls are often described as strong urban adapters, but few studies have explored species-specific differences in habitat use. Here, we use GPS tracking in conjunction with stable isotope analysis (SIA) to quantify the habitat use and trophic ecology of great black-backed gulls (Larus marinus) and herring gulls (L. argentatus) in an urbanized area. Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) of foraging locations revealed significant differences in the habitat …

Development And Evaluation Of An Improved Microbial Inactivation Model For Analyzing Continuous Flow Uv-Led Air Treatment Systems, Cole Holtom Thatcher
Development And Evaluation Of An Improved Microbial Inactivation Model For Analyzing Continuous Flow Uv-Led Air Treatment Systems, Cole Holtom Thatcher
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses the development of an improved microbial inactivation model for analyzing continuous flow UV-LED air treatment systems and use of the model to evaluate the impact of several treatment system design parameters on inactivation. Model development includes three submodels: a radiation submodel, a fluid flow submodel, and an inactivation kinetics submodel. Radiation modeling defines the UV irradiance throughout the system. Fluid flow modeling provides the residence times that microbes spend exposed to the UV irradiation while passing through the system. Inactivation modeling combines irradiance and residence times with inactivation kinetics to calculate species-specific inactivation in a treatment system. …

Iron removal via jarosite precipitate formation is a commonly used technique in various hydrometallurgical processes. Excess iron removal often becomes essential to an overall metal recovery circuit. This is particularly important to processes involving iron-bearing minerals. A technique, which involved the use of pyrite to generate acid for leaching, for iron removal is critical to enabling the process. Iron removal using CaO or similar reagents is expensive and often results in lost product. In the present study, various compounds that facilitate jarosite formation, namely Na2SO4, NH4OH, KCl, and KOH, were utilized and their effect …

Remote Work Guidelines - Faculty
Remote Work Guidelines - Faculty
Human Resources Policies
UHSP seeks to have a campus and workplace culture that is highly effective toward meeting the institution’s goals while being sensitive to the needs of faculty, staff and students. In the right circumstances, remote work can improve flexibility and work-life balance while potentially improving productivity.
Faculty have routinely operated with latitude to complete certain types of work away from the physical campus. This document presents guidelines that apply to faculty now in a concise document to ensure that critical institutional needs around data security, risk and compliance are met while recognizing that individual faculty should rely on department or college …
