Preserving Innocence: Ending Perceived Adultification And Toxic Masculinity Toward Black Boys, Erik M. Hines, Edward C. Fletcher Jr., Donna Y. Ford, James L. Moore Iii
Preserving Innocence: Ending Perceived Adultification And Toxic Masculinity Toward Black Boys, Erik M. Hines, Edward C. Fletcher Jr., Donna Y. Ford, James L. Moore Iii
Journal of Family Strengths
As early as the age of ten, Black boys are viewed as older, guilty until proven innocent by law enforcement (including school resource officers), and encounter a myriad of adverse racialized academic and social experiences (e.g., explicit and implicit biases) (Goff et al., 2014; Noguera, 2008). Dancy (2014) noted how Trayvon Martin, a Black male teen murdered for essentially being seen as threatening and intimidating, was viewed as adult-aged, deviant, troubled, and shiftless. Moreover, Black boys are expected to express minimum “signs” of weakness, vulnerability, and/or sensitivity. The aforementioned social persona may contribute to young Black men and boys not …

[2021 Winner] Incarceration As A New Age Form Of Slavery For People Of Color And Racism In The United States, Tessa Rosasco
Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award
Throughout the history of the United States, racial disparity has been rampant. This is especially true in relation to the population of people of color imprisoned in the U.S. My paper discusses the racial inequality in America, especially that of African Americans, and how people of color have been unjustly treated in a historically racist and unjust system. Special emphasis has been given to the portrayal of African Americans in the media and how presidential rhetoric and agendas have harmed communities of color.
Machine Learning Approach To Stability Analysis Of Semiconductor Memory Element, Ravindra Thanniru, Gautam Kapila, Nibhrat Lohia
Machine Learning Approach To Stability Analysis Of Semiconductor Memory Element, Ravindra Thanniru, Gautam Kapila, Nibhrat Lohia
SMU Data Science Review
Memory stability analysis traditionally relied heavily on circuit simulation-based approaches that run Monte Carlo (MC) analysis over various manufacturing and use condition parameters. This paper researches application of Machine Learning approaches for memory element failure analysis which could mimic simulation-like accuracy and minimize the need for engineers to rely heavily on simulators for their validations. Both regressor and classifier algorithms are benchmarked for accuracy and recall scores. A high recall score implies fewer escapes of fails to field and is the metric of choice for comparing algorithm. The paper identifies that recall score in excess of 0.97 can be achieved …

Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis Of Movie Reviews, Samuel Onalaja, Eric Romero, Bosang Yun
SMU Data Science Review
This study investigates a comparison of classification models used to determine aspect based separated text sentiment and predict binary sentiments of movie reviews with genre and aspect specific driving factors. To gain a broader classification analysis, five machine and deep learning algorithms were compared: Logistic Regression (LR), Naive Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Recurrent Neural Network Long-Short-Term Memory (RNN LSTM). The various movie aspects that are utilized to separate the sentences are determined through aggregating aspect words from lexicon-base, supervised and unsupervised learning. The driving factors are randomly assigned to various movie aspects and their impact tied to …

Spotify: You Have A Hit!, Christopher E. Dawson Jr., Steve Mann, Edward Roske, Gauthier Vasseur
SMU Data Science Review
Abstract. Over 87% of the streaming music is owned by four major record labels (Jones, 2018). Yet, the songs owned by those labels account for <1% of the total amount of music created each year. These labels are historically better at identifying talent (though this talent identification is becoming more difficult). Even though Spotify has 36% of the streaming marketing share (T4, 2021), Spotify has not been profitable because of the large licensing costs paid to the large music labels. If Spotify could identify hit songs & artists before the large labels, they would sign those artists and dramatically reduce their licensing costs. Using the Spotify API, this paper will use Spotify data on over 400K songs over the last three years for exploratory data analysis, provide descriptive statistics, perform feature selection, and develop models using LASSO and XGBOOST Classification. The research determined multiple key features and predicted with over 60% accuracy songs which were going to be a hit (defined as >90% popularity).

Access Barriers To Telehealth, Quynh Chau, Amita Behuria Pathak, Daniel Turner, Jacquelyn Cheun, Carl Noe
SMU Data Science Review
Abstract. Telehealth has long been touted as an efficient and cost-effective way to deliver health care services to patients. The COVID-19 global pandemic hastened the adoption of this technology in the United States. Despite its promises, telehealth as a technology-based model of health service delivery has also highlighted access to care inequities in the form of uneven utilization across various patient demographics. This research uses machine learning and publicly available data sources to describe telehealth utilization based on social determinants of care. The implications of this application can be used to inform health care providers of how to target efforts …
Reading Level Identification Using Natural Language Processing Techniques, William Arnost, Ellen Lull, Joseph Schueder, Joseph Engler
Reading Level Identification Using Natural Language Processing Techniques, William Arnost, Ellen Lull, Joseph Schueder, Joseph Engler
SMU Data Science Review
This paper investigates using the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) algorithm and lexical-syntactic features to measure readability. Readability is important in many disciplines, for functions such as selecting passages for school children, assessing the complexity of publications, and writing documentation. Text at an appropriate reading level will help make communication clear and effective. Readability is primarily measured using well-established statistical methods. Recent advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP) have had mixed success incorporating higher-level text features in a way that consistently beats established metrics. This paper contributes a readability method using a modern transformer technique and compares the results …
Modeling Electric Energy Generation In Ercot During Extreme Weather Events And The Impact Renewable Energy Has On Grid Reliability, Adam R. Ruthford, Bivin Sadler
Modeling Electric Energy Generation In Ercot During Extreme Weather Events And The Impact Renewable Energy Has On Grid Reliability, Adam R. Ruthford, Bivin Sadler
SMU Data Science Review
This paper shows the inadequacy of current grid backup supplies, their ongoing threat to grid reliability, and the increased risk of customer blackouts. This paper also examines reliability concerns caused by renewable energy sources under more normal operating conditions. This paper seeks to model the impacts of extreme weather on ERCOTs grid. Unusual weather patterns require that the electrical grid operates in conditions outside normal operating parameters. Electrical system demand can spike well above normal levels. At the same time, weather influences can change the operating envelope of electrical generation equipment. The ERCOT grid has changed from its’ traditional mix …
Predicting Power Using Time Series Analysis Of Power Generation And Consumption In Texas, Joshua Eysenbach, Bodie Franklin, Andrew J. Larsen, Joel Lindsey
Predicting Power Using Time Series Analysis Of Power Generation And Consumption In Texas, Joshua Eysenbach, Bodie Franklin, Andrew J. Larsen, Joel Lindsey
SMU Data Science Review
Due to the recent power events in Texas, power forecasting has been brought national attention. Accurate demand forecasting is necessary to be sure that there is adequate power supply to meet consumer's needs. While Texas has a forecasting model created by the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), constant efforts are required to ensure that the model stays at the state-of-the-art and is producing the most reliable forecasts possible. This research seeks to provide improved short- and medium-term forecasting models, bringing in state-of-the-art deep learning models to compare to ERCOT’s forecasts. A model that is more accurate than ERCOT’s own …

Emotion Integrated Music Recommendation System Using Generative Adversarial Networks, Mrinmoy Bhaumik, Patrica U. Attah, Faizan Javed
SMU Data Science Review
Music can stimulate emotions within us; hence is often called the “language of emotion.” This study explores emotion as an additional feature in generating a playlist with a deep learning model to improve the current music recommendation system. This study will sample emotions from certain subjects for each song in a sample of the data. Since the effect of music on emotion is subjective and is different person to person, this study would need a considerable number of subjects to reduce subjectivity. Due to the limited resources, a portion of the data will be labeled with emotion from subjects and …

Alternative Methods For Deriving Emotion Metrics In The Spotify® Recommendation Algorithm, Ronald M. Sherga Jr., David Wei, Neil Benson, Faizan Javed
SMU Data Science Review
Spotify's® recommendation algorithm tailors music offerings to create a unique listening experience for each user. Though what this recommender does is highly impressive, there is always room for improvement given that these techniques are not fully prescient. This study posits that in addition to creating certain features based on audio analysis, incorporating new features derived from album art color as well as lyrical sentiment analysis may provide additional value to the end user. This team did not find that a significant difference existed between color valence and Spotify® valence; however, all other comparisons resulted in statistically significant difference of means …
Clinical Diagnosis Support With Convolutional Neural Network By Transfer Learning, Spencer Fogleman, Jeremy Otsap, Sangrae Cho
Clinical Diagnosis Support With Convolutional Neural Network By Transfer Learning, Spencer Fogleman, Jeremy Otsap, Sangrae Cho
SMU Data Science Review
Breast cancer is prevalent among women in the United States. Breast cancer screening is standard but requires a radiologist to review screening images to make a diagnosis. Diagnosis through the traditional screening method of mammography currently has an accuracy of about 78% for women of all ages and demographics. A more recent and precise technique called Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) has shown to be more promising but is less well studied. A machine learning model trained on DBT images has the potential to increase the success of identifying breast cancer and reduce the time it takes to diagnose a patient, …

Covid-19 - A Graph Network Approach, Nibhrat Lohia, Rajesh Satluri, Suchismita Moharana, Venkat Kasarla
SMU Data Science Review
The effects of COVID-19 and its spreads are attributed to various factors. This study uses CDC open-source data on COVID-19 effected population with features ranging from location to ethnicity, to create a Knowledge Graph to measure the similarity between COVID-19 cases and estimate the risk for people likely affected by COVID-19. This data could be used to find correlations between distinct factors, like ethnicity and pre-existing health conditions, to find the vulnerability of a given COVID-19 patient. Using the Jaccard similarity coefficient, in the knowledge graph, we are able to identify and explore relationships between COVID-19 cases as well as …

The Art Of Storying A Life, Alexandra Fidyk
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Attending what might be passed as an ordinary if difficult exchange with a fellow graduate student when in doctoral studies, the storyteller weaves a particular happening into a much more telling account of power and agency. The teller permits time and place to shift, amplifying other encounters in relation to the initial student meeting. While not easy reading, especially for those who enjoy a telling as smooth and direct as an arrow flies, if you can allow yourself to wend along the curves that arc to and fro, something powerful will unfold. You will find yourself at a place not …

Fashion, Identity And The Muslim-American Narrative, Shireen Soliman
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
In this pivotal time, assumptions, boundaries, power structures and relationships within society are being reconsidered and reimagined. My research project, “Fashion, Identity and the Muslim- American Narrative” builds off of well-established prior models and responds to this moment. Through this multidisciplinary, multimedia design workshop series geared towards Muslim American female adolescents, we are able to leverage the powerful intersection of design, technology, community, social media and social justice. In this affirming, enlightening space, we use fashion, dress and personal narrative as the springboard and means of exploring the intrinsic connection between social and emotional issues surrounding identity development, social justice …

A Story Without End..., Holly Edwards
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This article traces the impact of 9/11 on my teaching style as an art historian. That trauma has left its marks on all of us, and yet life goes on. My own ‘story’ ranges across time and space, from Kabul decades ago through years in the studio since then. The tale is punctuated with contemplative questions about the therapeutic role of art in a troubled world. Art matters! And the way that we teach it makes a difference by fostering mindfulness in students with interdisciplinary pedagogical techniques, asking them to look, read, make, and talk collaboratively in order to transcend …

Do Teachers Know This?, David L. Pike
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
A Communication Arts instructor in a Calgary Technical Institute discovers an opportunity to enlarge his vocation when a student asks him a simple four-word question. Methods of thinking and learning are soon integrated into the communications curriculum, and students, together with their instructors, are invited to develop more and better “TLC” capabilities as they study and practice their chosen disciplines. The article closes by suggesting, given the challenges we’re facing in working, learning, and living well together now, that we ask leaders in our communities and beyond the same question; and to encourage them to expand their leadership roles and …
Aesthetic And Pedagogical Compasses: The Self In Motion, Liora Bresler
Aesthetic And Pedagogical Compasses: The Self In Motion, Liora Bresler
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This is a story of composing and being composed by “Aesthetics and curriculum”, a course I taught for 28 years at the University of Illinois. The course aimed at living with questions, as Rilke famously suggested, rather than seeking ultimate answers; heightened experience, wonder and exploration rather than mastery; creating openings rather than pre-destined knowledge. Tuning inward and outward were complementary processes that supported each other in a dynamic conversation involving artworks, the self, and aesthetic theories. We learned about ourselves in the process of encountering artworks and aesthetic theories, and, in turn, the encounter with our individual selves was …

Abstract “The Bridge”
Stories That Mattered: Inspirited Stories and the Unfolding Arts Curriculum as a call for papers for Fall 2021 issue inspired this Art Therapy educator to consider and re-examine past teaching beliefs and practices, to underscore and understand with more clarity, how the dissonance between two styles of a classical Fine Arts and an Art Therapy Education became apparent in an Art Therapy graduate studio course. With a sharing of past experiences and ideology, Berkowitz writes about how the examination of quality and fears, about a fine arts critique and the nonjudgmental art discussion, highlight the need to …

Keep On Going..., Jane K. Bates
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
In this article I make a case for holistic art education and demonstrate the transformative power of art and art teachers through two interconnected stories. The first is about my introduction to art in my sixth-grade class, and how this experience changed my life. The second, set more than fifty years later, is about my retirement from and return to teaching. These stories address why a holistic approach to teaching is so important and relevant today; relate how I came to develop my own approach; and describe how I implemented it in a teacher-training course. The message they send is …

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
My homeroom class was 8H. At that time the district grouped students homogeneously by rank or GPA. The “lowest” ranking class was 8H and they were mine. I remember the first day I met them, I was full of knowledge after completing my Master of Art Education just a few months before. I knew just what to do, just what to say. Undoubtedly, the students would love and respect me, and I would inspire them and teach them to love art. They would use art as another language for learning, I would differentiate to meet their needs and identify their …
Amelia's Gift, Daniel J. Mydlack
Amelia's Gift, Daniel J. Mydlack
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Professor Danny Mydlack recounts the mysterious arc of his student’s creative unfolding. Amelia, a middle-aged single mom, drops out of the personal videography production class before the end and yet her final assignment is delivered, posthumously, by her adult daughters. For the author, Amelia returned him to the core principles from his student days: the vast, wide terrain that is the true realm of art-making and an embrace of the fullness rather than merely the fineness of art practice. Mydlack proposes that with teaching there is more unseen than seen, more beyond our manipulation than within it, and that pedagogical …

Melvin Gets A Passing Grade, Peter London
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
150 word abstract
The author assigns a failing grade to a student in a high school required art course as a consequence of the student not doing any art at all. His chairman, stunned that any one can actually fail art, offers a view of art and teaching and history that upends the author’s own views on the purposes of art, the purposes of teaching and his possible role in history. Confounded by the realization that there might be a domain different, more and better than the one he had been navigating, the author changes the student’s grade, he was, …
