Microstructures In A Shear Margin: Jarvis Glacier, Alaska, Christopher Gerbi, Stephanie Mills, Renée Clavette, Seth Campbell, Steven Bernsen, David Clemens-Sewall, Ian Lee, Robert Hawley, Karl Kreutz, Kate Hruby

Dartmouth Scholarship

Microstructures, including crystallographic fabric, within the margin of streaming ice can exert strong control on flow dynamics. To characterize a natural setting, we retrieved three cores, two of which reached bed, from the flank of Jarvis Glacier, eastern Alaska Range, Alaska. The core sites lie ~1 km downstream of the source, with abundant water present in the extracted cores and at the base of the glacier. All cores exhibit dipping layers, a combination of debris bands and bubble-free domains. Grain sizes coarsen on average approaching the lateral margin. Crystallographic orientations are more clustered and with c-axes closer to horizontal nearer …

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to discuss the available evidence and therapeutic considerations for intravenous drug therapy for refractory chronic migraine.

RECENT FINDINGS: In carefully monitored settings, the inpatient administration of intravenous lidocaine and ketamine can be successful in treating refractory chronic migraine. Many patients with refractory chronic migraine have experienced treatment failure with the Raskin protocol. The use of aggressive inpatient infusion therapy consisting of intravenous lidocaine or ketamine, along with other adjunctive medications, has become increasingly common for these patients when all other treatments have failed. There is a clear need for prospective studies …

Non-Linear And Weakly Monotonic Relationship Between School Quality And House Prices, Shishir Mathur Dec 2021

Non-Linear And Weakly Monotonic Relationship Between School Quality And House Prices, Shishir Mathur

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This study provides evidence for a non-linear and weakly monotonic relationship between school quality and house prices. Using Fremont, California, as the study area, the regression analysis shows that homeowners are unwilling to pay a premium for an increase in school quality from low to medium quality. However, they are willing to pay a) a large premium when all schools are top-quality schools and b) a premium for access to nationally-renowned schools, which is in addition to the premium for top-quality schools. These findings have important land use policy significance because they provide new insights into the homeowner’s residential location …

Processing Binding Data Using An Open-Source Workflow, Errol L G Samuel, Secondra L Holmes, Damian W Young

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The thermal shift assay (TSA)—also known as differential scanning fluorimetry (DSF), thermofluor, and Tm shift—is one of the most popular biophysical screening techniques used in fragment-based ligand discovery (FBLD) to detect protein–ligand interactions. By comparing the thermal stability of a target protein in the presence and absence of a ligand, potential binders can be identified. The technique is easy to set up, has low protein consumption, and can be run on most real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) instruments. While data analysis is straightforward in principle, it becomes cumbersome and time-consuming when the screens involve multiple 96- or 384-well plates. There …

Abstract Background Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of clinical trial activity took place face to face within clinical or research units. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a significant shift towards trial delivery without in-person face-to-face contact or “Remote Trial Delivery”. The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) assembled a Remote Trial Delivery Working Group to consider challenges and enablers to this major change in clinical trial delivery and to provide a toolkit for researchers to support the transition to remote delivery. Methods The NIHR Remote Trial Delivery Working Group evaluated five key domains of the trial delivery pathway: …

An Assessment Of Grass Regeneration Nurseries At The Western Regional Plant Introduction Station, 1994-1997, V. L. Bradley, R. C. Johnson Dec 2021

An Assessment Of Grass Regeneration Nurseries At The Western Regional Plant Introduction Station, 1994-1997, V. L. Bradley, R. C. Johnson

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The Western Regional Plant Introduction Station (WRPIS), Pullman, WA, USA, maintains over 17,000 accessions of forage and turf grasses that are mostly wind cross-pollinated and highly heterogenic. Regeneration procedures have been refined over the past nine years to include improved isolation distance and increased plant populations for regeneration. The grass regeneration nurseries planted from 1994 through 1997 were evaluated using data recorded in the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) and it was found that approximately 78% of the regenerations were successful. Reasons for failures were contributed to inadequate plant number, presence of disease, seed shattering, and unsuitable growing environment. Several …

Assessment Of Ensilability Of Six Tropical Grasses Using Three Different Approaches, B. Zierenberg, K. Friedel, A. Glatzle, A. Chudy

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The preparation of well-preserved silages is considered increasingly important in the tropics and subtropics. In these regions silage production played a minor role in the past, as ensilability of tropical grasses is generally considered poor. In this study ensilability of six tropical grasses grown in the Paraguayan Chaco Boreal (Panicum maximum cv. Gatton, Cynodon plectostachyus, Cynodon sp. cv. Tifton 85, Digitaria eriantha var. pentzii, Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania and Digitaria milanjiana) was assessed in three different ways: (1) The chemical determination of the ratio between water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) and buffer capacity (BC), (2) the biological …

Fermentation Quality Of Phasey Bean And Guineagrass Silages, Y. Imura, T. Namihira, Yasuhiro Kawamoto

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Silages were made from guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq. var. maximum) and phasey bean (Macroptilium lathyroides (L.) Urb.) at three-growth stages. The silages were investigated in relation fermentation quality. Phasey bean silage showed a better fermentation quality than guineagrass silage. The latic acid to total acid ratio of phasey bean silage was higher than 500g/kg DM, and the volatile basic nitrogen to total nitrogen ratio was lower than 100g/kg. It is concluded that phasey bean is an unique legume suitable for good silage fermentation.

Constructivist Peer Review In Music Theory And Composition Courses: Technologies And Practice, Brendan Mcconville

Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction

This article considers the supporting technologies and practices for effective semi-anonymous peer review in traditional music theory and composition-related courses: orchestration, arranging, and composition. A coordinated approach probes two questions nested within one broad case study: (1) does the use of peer review in music theory and composition-related courses create meaningful, constructivist-inspired learning experiences, and (2) what web technologies can efficiently and effectively accomplish its activities? The article first provides a constructivist theoretical framework; next, it explains the methodologies, technologies, and resulting feedback from using peer review in a three-course study; and finally it provides concluding remarks on the many …
