Nurse And Patient Perceptions Of The Pre-Admission Nursing Practice Model: Linking Theory To Practice, Jane M. Flanagan
Nurse And Patient Perceptions Of The Pre-Admission Nursing Practice Model: Linking Theory To Practice, Jane M. Flanagan
Dissertations
The Pre-Admission Nursing Practice Model (PNPM) was developed to change the delivery of nursing care to patients preparing for surgery. The generation of the PNPM was guided by nursing knowledge, specifically Rogerian science, Newman's Health as Expanding Consciousness and Watson' theory of Transpersonal Caring. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the model on patient and nurse perceptions and experiences following exposure to the PNPM across the perioperative period.

Exploring Topics And Genres In Storytime Books: A Text Mining Approach, Soohyung Joo, Erin E. Ingram, Maria Cahill
Information Science Faculty Publications
Objective – While storytime programs for preschool children are offered in nearly all public libraries in the United States, little is known about the books librarians use in these programs. This study employed text analysis to explore topics and genres of books recommended for public library storytime programs.
Methods – In the study, the researchers randomly selected 429 children books recommended for preschool storytime programs. Two corpuses of text were extracted from the titles, abstracts, and subject terms from bibliographic data. Multiple text mining methods were employed to investigate the content of the selected books, including term frequency, bi-gram analysis, …
Development And Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Practice Mentor Fellowship, Stacy L. Alves
Development And Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Practice Mentor Fellowship, Stacy L. Alves
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: The Institute of Medicine (2008) set a goal that 90% of healthcare decisions would be based on the best evidence possible by 2020, yet many challenges remain. Common barriers include clinicians’ beliefs about the value of evidence-based practices, their competency to implement it, and systems issues such as time, resources, and organizational value and preparedness (Melnyk et al., 2017).
Local Problem: A hospital within an integrated health care system sought to increase the use of EBP for clinical decision making. A gap analysis revealed a lack of sufficient EBP mentors to lead efforts to promote system-wide EBP implementation.

Moby-Dick As Corporate Catastrophe: Law, Ethics, And Redemption, David Yosifon
Moby-Dick As Corporate Catastrophe: Law, Ethics, And Redemption, David Yosifon
Faculty Publications
Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick serves here as a vehicle through which to interrogate core features of American corporate law and excavate some of the deeper lessons about the human soul that lurk behind the pasteboard mask of the law’s black letter. The inquiry yields an illuminating vantage on the ethical consequences of corporate capital structure, the law of corporate purpose, the meaning of voluntarism, the ethical stakes of corporate fiduciary obligations, and the role of lawyers in preventing or facilitating corporate catastrophe. No prior familiarity with the novel or corporate law is required.

Open Pedagogy As A Tool For Facilitating The Design Of Learner Centered Open Educational Resources, Yang Wu, Matthew Boyer
OER & Beyond - Blog Archive
Open pedagogy, or Open Educational Practices, is a creative movement in education that combines constructivist principles of giving students creativity and self direction in learning, critical pedagogy and the creation of openly licensed online learning materials (DeRosa & Jhangiani, 2018, 10; Cronin & MacLaren, 2018, 136-137), is increasingly rising to the forefront of the Open Education movement. The potentials of open pedagogy in enhancing teaching, particularly in terms of fostering student engagement, creating opportunities for new forms of teaching that transcends the limits of copyright, the “surveillance” and “banking” models of education, as well as getting students to critically re …

For The Dead Homie: Black Male Rappers, Homicide Survivorship Bereavement, And The Rap Tribute Of Nipsey Hussle, Melvin L. Williams, Justin K. Winley, Justin A. Causey
Journal of Hip Hop Studies
Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom’s murder represented a cultural cataclysmic event that startled the Hip Hop community and triggered previous memories of Black men’s homicidal deaths in the world. Nipsey Hussle’s death inspired touching rap tribute songs by Black male rappers, who sought to commemorate his cultural legacy and express their bereavement as homicide survivors. Rap tribute songs occupy a significant history, as rappers historically employed them to honor Hip Hop’s fallen soldiers, communicate their homicide survivorship bereavement processes, and speak about social perils in the Black community. Framed by critical race (CRT) and gender role conflict theoretical frameworks, this study …

Unordered Cnf Games, Md Lutfar Rahman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The classic TQBF problem is to determine who has a winning strategy in a game played on a given CNF formula, where the two players alternate turns picking truth values for the variables in a given order, and the winner is determined by whether the CNF gets satisfied. We study variants of this game in which the variables may be played in any order, and each turn consists of picking a remaining variable and a truth value for it. For the version where the set of variables is partitioned into two halves and each player may only pick variables from …
Rethinking The Rhetorical Dimensions Of Public Refusals, Tyler Stafford
Rethinking The Rhetorical Dimensions Of Public Refusals, Tyler Stafford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In this dissertation on rethinking the rhetorical dimensions of public refusals, I attempt to enhance the heuristic value of compositionist John Schilb’s neglected but promising concept of rhetorical refusal with (1) an amplification of his higher principle criterion using rhetorical studies of decorum and (2) the scholarly deployment of strategic silence, journalism ethics, controversy and melodrama, irony, and prophetic rhetoric. In so doing, I (1) endeavor to inspire cross-disciplinary dialogue between those who study rhetoric in communication departments and those who study rhetoric in English departments; (2) demonstrate analyses of rhetorical refusals that take us beyond the cases explored in …

Epidemiological Studies On Risk Factors Of Chronic Diseases, Rutu Rathod
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Myocardial Infarction (MI) is one of the most common cardiac conditions in older adults. As the pathophysiological processes underlying human diseases are complex, I utilized all available data to predict the incidence of future MI using exploratory factor analysis. Six factors were identified, each representing a unique risk dimension based on loaded observed variables, e.g., the hemodynamic factor loaded systolic, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate variables. Four factors (hemodynamic, smoking, blood lipids, and alcohol consumption) were detected as risk factors for future MI. The burden of chronic conditions among children and adolescents is increasing and one of its risk …

Dysregulation in adipokine biosynthesis and function contributes to obesity-induced metabolic diseases. However, the identities and functions of many of the obesity-induced secretory molecules remain unknown. Here, we report the identification of leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1) as an obesity-associated adipokine that exacerbates high fat diet–induced hepatosteatosis and insulin resistance. Serum levels of LRG1 were markedly elevated in obese humans and mice compared with their respective controls. LRG1 deficiency in mice greatly alleviated diet-induced hepatosteatosis, obesity, and insulin resistance. Mechanistically, LRG1 bound with high selectivity to the liver and promoted hepatosteatosis by increasing de novo lipogenesis and suppressing fatty acid β-oxidation. LRG1 …

Rarely are communications networks point-to-point. In most cases, transceiver relay stations exist between transmitter and receiver end-points. These relay stations, while essential for controlling cost and adding flexibility to network architectures, reduce the overall security of the respective network. In an effort to quantify that reduction, we extend the Quality of Secure Service (QoSS) model to these complex networks, specifically multi-hop networks. In this approach, the quantification of security is based upon probabilities that adversarial listeners and disruptors gain access to or manipulate transmitted data on one or more of these multi-hop channels. Message fragmentation and duplication across available channels …

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
Except for South Africa, sub-Saharan African countries criminalize same-sex relationships, although the call for acceptance increases. The «pro» and the «anti» -same-sex relationships camps use the Bible. However, investigating the texts shows a selective use of the Bible to entrench one’s already accepted position. The questions addressed in this article are: do Africans resist same-sex relationships purely based on the teaching of the Bible, or are there other factors at play? Several African scholars examining those texts expose the weaknesses inherent in their use to resist same-sex relationships. The analysis critically reflects on the use of the Bible in the …
Contrarrestar La Homofobia Basada En La Biblia Y Culturalmente Establecida: ¡Lo No-Africano Se Encuentra Con Lo InequíVoco!, Jeremy Punt
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
On the African continent the argument that homosexuality is un-African is often used in tandem with the claim that the Bible unambiguously condemns homosexuality. This article suggests that the link between the un-African and unambiguous positions largely depends on hard-core heteronormative positions informed by debilitating homophobia. Amidst a seeming impasse in debates, biblical hermeneutics which includes attention for ancient and modern contexts, moves beyond selective texts and incorporates recent research on human sexuality and can contribute towards debunking Bible-based, culturally-ensconced homophobia in Africa.

Despite the curative potential of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), conditioning-associated toxicities preclude broader clinical application. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) provide an attractive approach to HSCT conditioning that minimizes toxicity while retaining efficacy. Initial studies of ADC conditioning have largely focused on syngeneic HSCT. However, to treat acute leukemias or induce tolerance for solid organ transplantation, this approach must be expanded to allogeneic HSCT (allo-HSCT). Using murine allo-HSCT models, we show that pharmacologic Janus kinase 1/2 (JAK1/2) inhibition combined with CD45- or cKit-targeted ADCs enables robust multilineage alloengraftment. Strikingly, myeloid lineage donor chimerism exceeding 99% was achievable in fully MHC-mismatched HSCT …

Finland’s educational prowess, though tempered by recent international assessments, has remained intact. This report focused on lessons that could be learned regarding secondary-level science education from the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015, science-focused assessment. That PISA iteration included not only science literacy but also students’ science dispositions (epistemology, enjoyment, interest, and self-efficacy) and the schools’ science climate measures (disciplinary climate and teaching support). Due to the hierarchical nature of the PISA data, multilevel models were employed in this Finnish study, involving 5582 students from 167 schools. Science dispositions (as outcome measures) were differently associated with teaching support and …
Human Plcg2 Haploinsufficiency Results In A Novel Immunodeficiency, Joshua Brandon Alinger
Human Plcg2 Haploinsufficiency Results In A Novel Immunodeficiency, Joshua Brandon Alinger
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
NK cells are critical for the recognition and lysis of herpesvirus-infected cells. Patients with NK cell immunodeficiency may suffer from unusually severe and/or recurrent herpesvirus infections; however, the genetic cause is frequently unknown. PLCG2 encodes a signaling protein in NK cell and B cell receptor signaling, in which dominant-negative or gain-of-function mutations may cause cold urticaria, antibody deficiency, or autoinflammation. However, loss-of-function mutations and PLCG2 haploinsufficiency have never been reported in human disease. We examined 2 families with autosomal dominant NK cell immunodeficiency with dual high-dimensional techniques, mass cytometry and whole-exome sequencing, to identify the cause of disease. We identified …
Slo2.1 Channels: A New Molecular Mechanism To Regulate Uterine Excitability, Juan Jose Ferreira
Slo2.1 Channels: A New Molecular Mechanism To Regulate Uterine Excitability, Juan Jose Ferreira
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
At the end of pregnancy, the uterus transitions from a non-contractile state to a highly contractile state. Two processes primarily drive this transition. First, from the 28th week of pregnancy until labor, the resting membrane potential of uterine (myometrial) smooth muscle cells (MSMCs) gradually becomes more positive (depolarizes) (Parkington et al. 1999). Second, at the end of pregnancy, MSMCs express more oxytocin receptors and become more sensitive to oxytocin (Kimura et al. 1996). However, the detailed mechanisms by which these processes occur have not been determined. My central hypothesis was that the Na+-activated K+ channel SLO2.1 plays a key role …

Human’s advances in understanding biological processes rely heavily on the breakthroughs in biophysical tools. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based protein footprinting, which interrogates protein structures by measuring protein solvent assessable surface area (SASA), has grown rapidly in the last decade, successful in providing valuable data for numerous protein systems. This thesis focuses mainly on this technology. We set out to push the boundary of MS-based protein footprinting further into the new areas, preparing it for potential future applications including large-scale experiments that require high-throughput analysis the structure of large, complicated protein complexes. This thesis devotes five chapters to the method development of MS-based …
Regulatory Effects Of The E. Coli Recbcd Nuclease Domain On Dna Unwinding Kinetics, Nicole Fazio
Regulatory Effects Of The E. Coli Recbcd Nuclease Domain On Dna Unwinding Kinetics, Nicole Fazio
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
I have examined the effects of deleting the nuclease domain of the E. coli helicase RecBCD on the rates of ATP-independent DNA melting, single stranded (ss) DNA translocation, and double stranded (ds) DNA unwinding by RecBCD. The canonical role of the nuclease domain is DNA degradation, but the removal of this domain showed unexpected effects on other RecBCD activities including DNA binding, melting, and unwinding. This thesis presents a mechanistic study of DNA unwinding by RecBCD and a RecBCD variant with the nuclease domain deleted (RecBΔnucCD). I examined the rates of ssDNA translocation and dsDNA unwinding by RecBCD and RecBΔnucCD …
Material Difficulty And Individual Difference Factors Moderate The Eyewitness Confidence-Accuracy Relationship, Wenbo Lin
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Recent studies have shown that eyewitness confidence is positively associated with high identification (ID) accuracy, but some eyewitness researchers have expressed concerns regarding the reliability of this confidence-accuracy relationship in applied settings (e.g., are there circumstances or moderator variables that make this relationship less reliable?). For the present study, we considered two types of moderator variables: material difficulty (i.e., the difficulty level associated with different sets of eyewitness stimuli) and individual difference factors such as face recognition ability. Experiment 1 examined whether these moderator variables significantly impair the confidence-accuracy relationship and Experiment 2 examined whether these same moderator variables equally …

This project first investigates the environmental and health consequences of bronze production during the Shang period at Anyang. As a contribution to the growing scholarship in paleo-environmental and archaeological studies, this dissertation uses Shang bronze production in Anyang as a case study into how paleo- environmental pollution study can inform us about the on environmental and health conditions of lives in the Bronze Age China. Through geochemical analysis (ICP-MS, ICP-OES) …
Cyclodextrin-Based Supramolecular Drug-Delivery Nanomaterials And Shear-Thinning Hydrogels Using Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization, Ruihan Li
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Cyclodextrins (CD) are a family of oligosaccharides that can non-covalently and precisely bind small hydrophobic drug molecules, such as antibiotics and anticancer drugs, through well-defined host-guest interactions inside the inner cavity of the macrocycle. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) is a versatile, functional group tolerant method of polymerization that is underexplored in biomedical applications relative to the more common controlled chain-growth polymerizations. In this dissertation, I describe my efforts to combine the supramolecular chemistry of CDs with that of ROMP using specialized functional monomers to synthesize several CD-based polymeric drug delivery nanomaterials. For example, in Chapter 2, a new type of …
On The Challenges And Rewards Of Analyzing Molecular Dynamics At The Terabyte And Millisecond Scale, Justin Roy Porter
On The Challenges And Rewards Of Analyzing Molecular Dynamics At The Terabyte And Millisecond Scale, Justin Roy Porter
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Markov state models (MSMs) are powerful tools for estimating and concisely representing the conformational ensemble accessible to biological macromolecules, particularly proteins. Conformational ensembles are of special importance biological function, both in health and disease, because biology derives from molecules’ entire conformational distribution rather than any single structure. Consequently, MD is poised to become a powerful tool for personalized medicine and for the study of molecular sequence-function relationships generally. However, because of their hyperdimensionality and size, just generating MD datasets and Markov state models (MSMs) that represent biologically relevant molecules is a substantive technical challenge. Then, even …
Causal Function And Bias Correlation Of The Orbitofrontal Cortex In Economic Choices, Shi Weikang
Causal Function And Bias Correlation Of The Orbitofrontal Cortex In Economic Choices, Shi Weikang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Economic choices entail two mental processes, value calculation and value comparison (Niehans, 1990). Studies in the last twenty years have shown that neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) could support both processes. Namely, in the studies in which monkeys chose between two juice options with various amounts, three functional cell groups had been found in the OFC: offer value cells encode the value of individual juices, chosen juice cells encode the choice in a binary way and chosen value cells encode the value of the chosen juice (Padoa-Schioppa and Assad, 2006). These results suggest a decision circuit within OFC with …
Influence Of Focal Activity On Macroscale Brain Dynamics In Health And Disease, Zachary Pollack Rosenthal
Influence Of Focal Activity On Macroscale Brain Dynamics In Health And Disease, Zachary Pollack Rosenthal
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Macroscopic recordings of brain activity (e.g. fMRI, EEG) are a sensitive biomarker of the neural networks supporting neurocognitive function. However, it remains largely unclear what mechanisms mediate changes in macroscale networks after focal brain injuries like stroke, seizure, and TBI. Recently, optical neuroimaging in animal models has emerged as a powerful tool to begin addressing these questions. Using widefield imaging of cortical calcium dynamics in mice, this dissertation investigates the mechanisms by which focal disruptions in activity alter brain-wide functional dynamics. In two chapters, I demonstrate 1) that focal sensory stimulation elicits state-dependent, global slow waves propagating from primary somatosensory …
Regulation Of Metabolic Stress By The Snhg3 Locus, Arthur Curtis Sletten
Regulation Of Metabolic Stress By The Snhg3 Locus, Arthur Curtis Sletten
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Dyslipidemia and lipotoxicity are pathologic signatures of the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Excess lipid causes cell dysfunction and induces cell death through pleiotropic mechanisms that link to oxidative stress. However, pathways that regulate the response to metabolic stress are not fully understood. To identify novel genes involved in metabolic stress, our group performed an unbiased forward genetic screen for lipotoxicity resistance. My studies focused on characterizing one of the mutant cell lines isolated from this screen, in which promoter trap mutagenesis disrupted one allele of the small nucleolar RNA hosting gene 3 (Snhg3). I demonstrate that diminished expression …
Role Of Interferon Receptors In Sting-Associated Autoinflammatory Disease In Mice, William Alexander Stinson
Role Of Interferon Receptors In Sting-Associated Autoinflammatory Disease In Mice, William Alexander Stinson
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Over the past decade, the cGAS-STING pathway has emerged as a principal component of innate DNA sensing. Its activation of type I interferon (IFN) elicits host immune activation and in the absence of cGAS or STING, mice are rendered critically susceptible to infection by viruses and bacteria. Breakdowns in the molecules that regulate this pathway can promote unrestrained cGAS-STING activation and the development of various forms of autoimmune disease. For instance, gain-of-function mutations in STING cause autoinflammatory lung disease in mice and STING-associated vasculopathy with onset in infancy (SAVI) in humans. However, our understanding of the mechanisms that underlie STING-dependent …
Genetic Risk Factors For Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Insights From Hipsc-Cerebral Organoids, Michelle L. Wegscheid
Genetic Risk Factors For Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Insights From Hipsc-Cerebral Organoids, Michelle L. Wegscheid
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) characterized by remarkable phenotypic variability, where affected children manifest a spectrum of central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities, including brain tumors, impairments in attention, behavior, learning disabilities, and an increased incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A significant barrier to the implementation of precision medicine strategies for children with NF1 is a lack of prognostic risk factors to guide clinical management. However, emerging population-based genotype-phenotype association studies have suggested that the germline NF1 gene mutation may represent one clinically actionable risk factor for NF1-associated neurodevelopmental abnormalities. As a critical step in …
