Search And Rescue Missions On The Rise In U.S. National Parks, Sahalie Donaldson Dec 2021

Search And Rescue Missions On The Rise In U.S. National Parks, Sahalie Donaldson

Capstones

Across the country the number of search and rescue missions in national parks has been creeping up since 2018. While the number of missions being undertaken are up overall, some parks in particular have seen a dramatic spike in the number of people requiring rescue services, straining a patchwork, often volunteer-based search-and-rescue system. Some parks like Maine’s Acadia National Park, Zion National Park in Utah and the Grand Canyon National Park even experienced their busiest years to date in regards to the number of search and rescue calls they received.

Both former and current park rangers who go on search …

Examining The Recovery Of The Mta In Nyc, Angel Adegbesan

Capstones

My capstone project involved writing codes to scrape and analyze data that isn’t readily available in the format we want. I scraped and analyzed turnstile data and metro card data from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority from the periods of Jan 01, 2021 to April 30, 2021 and Jan 01, 2022 to April 30, 2022. The purpose of the analysis is to determine how public transit ridership has changed in New York City and whether the MTA was on track to pre-pandemic levels. For my capstone, I wrote about my findings from the data analysis and did some interactive work to …

An Industry Under Construction, Hannah Fullmer Dec 2021

An Industry Under Construction, Hannah Fullmer

Capstones

A growing number of entrepreneurs (often young, frequently queer or people of color) are trying to change a restaurant industry from within by opening up their own businesses. HAGS, an upcoming queer-focused fine-dining restaurant and Daughter, a community-focused cafe in Brooklyn are just the newest of these socially-minded ventures popping up across the country. These spaces are committed to creating equitable spaces, addressing toxic restaurant and workplace cultures and are frequently tied to larger social issues like food insecurity, zero-waste initiatives or in the case of HAGS, queer representation. But these new business owners are fighting an entrenched system and …

Application Of Vortex Tubes In An Underground Mine Ventilation System, Nelson K. Dumakor-Dupey Dec 2021

Application Of Vortex Tubes In An Underground Mine Ventilation System, Nelson K. Dumakor-Dupey

Engineering

A major challenge for deep underground mines in tropical regions is high-temperature climate conditions at a working face. The high-temperature conditions can cause discomfort to people working underground and lead to health and safety issues. In some instances, airflow from primary ventilation and central refrigeration systems is not adequate to reduce the ambient temperature below a permissible limit at remotely located working faces. In some mines, mobile cooling systems are used in conjunction with an existing central cooling system. However, mining companies are often skeptical about implementing the combined cooling system due to its high operating costs involved with refrigeration …

There has been an abundance of new and novel aircraft designs created for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in recent years. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) contributes to the research and development of this industry in part by applying its aircraft design tools to create conceptual designs of UAM reference vehicles. The vehicles are intended to quantify the tradeoffs and performance capabilities necessary for VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft in the UAM design space. The reference vehicles represent a variety of configurations that seek to encompass many of the design characteristics suitable for UAM. This thesis focuses on …

History Matching And Prediction Of A Polymer Flood Pilot In Heavy Oil Reservoir On Alaska North Slope, Xindan Wang Dec 2021

History Matching And Prediction Of A Polymer Flood Pilot In Heavy Oil Reservoir On Alaska North Slope, Xindan Wang

Engineering

The first-ever polymer flood pilot to enhance heavy oil recovery on Alaska North Slope is ongoing. After more than 3 years of polymer injection, significant benefit has been observed from the decrease in water cut from 65% to less than 15% in the project producers. The primary objective of this study is to develop a robust history-matched reservoir simulation model capable of predicting future polymer flood performance. In this work, the reservoir simulation model has been developed based on the geological model and available reservoir and fluid data. In particular, four high transmissibility strips were introduced to connect the injector-producer …

Performance Evaluation And Environmental Partitioning Of Op-40 Chemical Herder During Herder Mediated In Situ Burning Of Crude Oil At Varying Environmental Conditions, Md Ibnul Hasan Dec 2021

Performance Evaluation And Environmental Partitioning Of Op-40 Chemical Herder During Herder Mediated In Situ Burning Of Crude Oil At Varying Environmental Conditions, Md Ibnul Hasan

Engineering

In situ burning (ISB) aided by chemical herders is one of the most suited and effective oil spill response (OSR) techniques for Arctic conditions. OP-40 has been reported as the most efficient and suitable herding agent among the two US EPA-approved herders; however, the fate of OP-40 in the environment after an effective ISB is not fully understood. Previous studies reported partial accumulation of OP-40 in water and confirmed the absence of OP-40 in the air after a burn. The only other possible place of OP-40 accumulation is burned oil residues; however, there was no standard method in previous peer-reviewed …

Characterization Of A Novel Dual-Stator Electric Generator Using Finite Element Analysis, Utpal Avro Mozumder Dec 2021

Characterization Of A Novel Dual-Stator Electric Generator Using Finite Element Analysis, Utpal Avro Mozumder

Engineering

In a study published by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), it was shown that “Renewable energy sources, accessed with commercially available technologies, could adequately supply 80% of total U.S. electricity generation in 2050”. Therefore, a very rapid increase in renewable energy penetration in electric power systems is expected. The renewable energy harvesting process (except solar energy) involves technologies that utilize electric generators for energy conversion. Thus, the performance of generation units used in the renewable energy harvesting process is becoming more critical in electric power system stability, energy efficiency, and power cost. This project presents a characterization process …

Landslides In The Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska: Inventory Map And Tanana 440 Landslide Assessment, Jaimy A. Schwarber

Engineering

Landslides are geologic hazards that threaten human life, property, and infrastructure. Effective threat mitigation requires knowledge of where past landslides occurred. Until now, no published landslide inventory maps existed for any part of Alaska. Here we present an overview of our landslide mapping within parts of the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB), Alaska and a thorough investigation and assessment of the Tanana 440 (T440) landslide. We mapped 1,679 landslides, and field-verified 51 landslides within the FNSB. These landslides vary in age, movement type, and material. Most are prehistoric, but we did observe some historic and active landslides. Observed slope failures …

Current single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) protocols are limited by the number of cells that can be simultaneously sequenced, restricting the ability to resolve heterogeneity of rare cell types. We describe here a protocol for rapid isolation of myeloid cells from tumor-harboring mouse cerebellum without cell sorting to minimize cell damage for scRNA-seq. This protocol includes the procedures for further enrichment of myeloid cells using CD11b+ magnetic beads, followed by the generation of scRNA library and sequencing analysis. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Dang et al. (2021).

Human Achilles Tendon Mechanical Behavior Is More Strongly Related To Collagen Disorganization Than Advanced Glycation End-Products Content, Jennifer A Zellers, Jeremy D Eekhoff, Remy E Walk, Mary K Hastings, Simon Y Tang, Spencer P Lake Dec 2021

Human Achilles Tendon Mechanical Behavior Is More Strongly Related To Collagen Disorganization Than Advanced Glycation End-Products Content, Jennifer A Zellers, Jeremy D Eekhoff, Remy E Walk, Mary K Hastings, Simon Y Tang, Spencer P Lake

Open Access Publications

Diabetes is associated with impaired tendon homeostasis and subsequent tendon dysfunction, but the mechanisms underlying these associations is unclear. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) accumulate with diabetes and have been suggested to alter tendon function. In vivo imaging in humans has suggested collagen disorganization is more frequent in individuals with diabetes, which could also impair tendon mechanical function. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between tendon tensile mechanics in human Achilles tendon with accumulation of advanced glycation end-products and collagen disorganization. Achilles tendon specimens (n = 16) were collected from individuals undergoing lower extremity amputation or from autopsy. …

We previously showed stabilization of NIK-induced activation of NF-κB non-canonical signaling suppresses MLL-AF9-induced AML. In the current study, we demonstrate that deletion of NF-κB non-canonical RelB prevents the inhibitory effect of NIK stabilization in MLL-AF9 AML. Mechanistically, RelB suppresses its direct target, TIFAB, which is upregulated in human AML and correlates negatively with the survival of AML patients. Forced expression of TIFAB reverses NIK-induced impaired AML development through downregulation of RelB and upregulation of HOXA9. Consistent with upregulation of HOXA9, gene set enrichment analysis shows that forced expression of TIFAB blocks myeloid cell development, upregulates leukemia stem cell signature and …

Nikkei And Chifa: Two Styles Of Peruvian-Asian Fusion, With Two Different Trajectories, Megan Caceres Dec 2021

Nikkei And Chifa: Two Styles Of Peruvian-Asian Fusion, With Two Different Trajectories, Megan Caceres

Capstones

Nikkei and Chifa, two different styles of Peruvian-Asian fusion, have established a foothold in New York and New Jersey, but each style is taking a very different path to growth. Nikkei restaurants, a blend of Japanese and Peruvian ingredients, are booming, especially at the higher-end, while Chifa restaurants, which mix Chinese and Peruvian customs and ingredients, are struggling to gain traction; this reality follows how New Yorkers undervalue restaurant concepts that are not mainstream or exclusive, and this holds implications for spots that depend on word-of-mouth or other patrons to gain buzz and notoriety, since they do not have star …

“The New Pinkertons”: Anti-Union Consultants And Surveillance Tech Thwart Organizing, Jo Constantz

Capstones

In 2020, just 6.3% of U.S. private-sector workers were union members, despite the fact that 68% of Americans approve of labor unions, the highest since 1965, and nearly half of non-union workers say they would join.

After World War II, wage growth kept pace with GDP growth, but then began to diverge in the 1970s, according to a study by the RAND Corporation. After 1975, incomes of the bottom 90% rose more slowly than the economy as a whole, while incomes of the top 10% grew faster. The declining wage growth coincided with and is closely related to a drop-off …
