This project continues to fit the experimental data on the stress-strain behavior of newborn mice’s ascending aorta. The stress-strain behavior of newborn mouse aorta is highly nonlinear because of its unique composition of elastin and collagen in the arterial wall. To mathematically describe this behavior, more strain energy functions of different biological materials were used in fitting. Multiple error functions were used to improve accuracy. K-fold cross-validation was applied in regression to avoid overfitting. In addition to the data of aorta with elastin knockout, those of aorta with lysyl oxidase knockout and fibulin 4 knockout are also evaluated in this …

The nuclear receptor PPARα is associated with reducing adiposity, especially in the liver, where it transactivates genes for β-oxidation. Contrarily, the function of PPARα in extrahepatic tissues is less known. Therefore, we established the first adipose-specific PPARα knockout (PparaFatKO) mice to determine the signaling position of PPARα in adipose tissue expansion that occurs during the development of obesity. To assess the function of PPARα in adiposity, female and male mice were placed on a high-fat diet (HFD) or normal chow for 30 weeks. Ultracold neutral plasmas provide a platform for studying transport properties in an idealized environment. In this dissertation, transport properties in a Ca$^+$/Yb$^+$ dual species ultracold neutral plasma and a Ca$^+$ magnetized ultracold neutral plasma are studied. In dual species plasmas, we study ion-ion temperature relaxation. We compare measured relaxation rates with atomistic simulations and a range of popular theories. Our work validates the assumptions and capabilities of molecular dynamic simulations and invalidates theoretical models in this regime. This work illustrates an approach for precision determinations of detailed material properties in Coulomb mixtures across a wide range of conditions. We also …

Negative attitudes toward older adults are endemic to the nursing profession, as well as society in general. With older adults accounting for an ever increasing proportion of health care services, it is imperative that nurse educators develop continuing education activities that have a positive impact on registered nurses' attitudes toward older adults. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of participation in a reminiscence learning experience (RLE) on registered nurses' attitudes toward and empathy with older adults.

Electrically powered vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft could provide a new mode of air transportation of people and cargo that is low-cost, on-demand, and able to reach more areas than is possible with current technology. They have the unique ability to takeoff and land in congested spaces yet efficiently travel long distances which makes them a promising technology for applications such as rapid medical assistance, automated package delivery, or human transportation. Cybersecurity is an increasing area of concern for organizations and individuals alike. The majority of successfully executed cyberattacks are a result of human error. One common type of attack that targets human users is phishing. In spite of this, there is a lack of research surrounding human implications on phishing behavior. Anomaly detection performs well in situations where signature (and other rule-based) methods fail; there is no need to identify every threat as long as it is different from the norm. The tradeoff is that anomaly detection often results in a large number of false positives. While previous work has capitalized on the data imbalance problem to train models with only one set of data (one-class classification), few have utilized the limiting set for anything other than testing purposes. Secrecy and the use of “secret information” as capital in the hands of the state is mobilised by affective racialised machineries, cultivated on “security” grounds. Securitised secrecy is an assemblage of concealed operations juxtaposing various forms of invasions and dispossessions. It is a central strategy in the politico-economic life of the state to increase its scope of domination. Secrecy is used and abused to entrap and penetrate political subjects and entities. Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterium that has developed sophisticated mechanisms to survive inside its infectious compartment, the inclusion. Notably, Chlamydia weaves an extensive network of microtubules (MTs) and actin filaments to enable interactions with host organelles and enhance its stability. Despite the global health and economic burden caused by this sexually transmitted pathogen, little is known about how actin and MT scaffolds are integrated into an increasingly complex virulence system. Previously, we established that the chlamydial effector InaC interacts with ARF1 to stabilize MTs. We now demonstrate that InaC regulates RhoA to control actin scaffolds. InaC relies on …

Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is one of the most common childhood mental health disorders, affecting about 5.6% of the population worldwide. Several studies have specifically shown a high prevalence of comorbid mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder (BD), in those diagnosed with ADHD. Several common symptoms of ADHD are also found in BD, which are characterized by alternating periods of euthymia and mood disturbances. The inattention and impulsivity of ADHD can be seen in manic and hypomanic episodes of BD. To understand what kind of collective healing practices might be most effective following mass atrocity, we need to comprehend better what counts as collective healing, and in what ways group healing processes differ from individual ones. We need clear and well-argued answers to these conceptual questions as a basis for deriving the criteria by which we might evaluate various practices in different contexts. Collective Healing To Address Legacies Of Transatlantic Slavery: Opportunities And Challenges, Scherto R. Gill, Garrett Thomson

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

In this article, we show how pathways to justice and reconciliation pertaining to the transatlantic slavery should begin with collective healing processes. To illustrate this conclusion, we first employ a four-fold conceptual framework for understanding collective healing that consists in: (1) acknowledging historical dehumanizing acts; (2) addressing the harmful effects of dehumanisation; (3) embracing relational rapprochement; and (4) co-imagining and co-creating conditions for systemic justice. Based on this framework, we then examine existing collective healing practices in different contexts that are aimed at addressing legacies of transatlantic slavery. The elimination of Native peoples and the enslavement of Africans in the U.S. more than qualify as acts of historical state sponsored genocide. A feature of both genocides is that they ended as institutional practices but have continued culturally and psychologically. The primary contemporary legacy of these genocides is racism which reinforces historical trauma and grief. Suggestions are made for how healing for Native and African Americans can begin despite ongoing racism. This includes psychological counseling for White Americans with beliefs in White supremacy. A Dance Of Shadows And Fires: Conceptual And Practical Challenges Of Intergenerational Healing After Mass Atrocity, Brandon Hamber, Ingrid Palmary

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The legacy of mass atrocity—including colonialism, slavery or specific manifestations such as apartheid—continue long after their demise. Applying a temporal intergenerational lens adds complications. We argue that mass atrocity creates for subsequent generations a deep psychological rupture akin to witnessing past atrocities. This creates a moral liability in the present. Healing is a process dependent on the authenticity (evident in discourse and action) with which we address contemporary problems. A further overriding task is to open social and political space for divergent voices.
