Exploring Prospective 1-8 Teachers' Number And Operation Sense In The Context Of Fractions, Marta T. Magiera, Leigh A. Van Den Kieboom

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

This exploratory study examined prospective elementary teachers’ (PSTs’) number and operation sense (NOS) in the context of solving problems with fractions. Drawing on the existing literature, we identified seven skills that characterize fraction-related NOS. We analyzed 230 responses to 23 tasks completed by 10 PSTs for evidence of PSTs’ use of different fraction-related NOS skills. The analysis revealed that PSTs did not use all seven fraction-related NOS skills to the same extent. PSTs’ responses documented their frequent reasoning about the meaning of symbols and formal mathematical language in the context of fractions. To a lesser extent, PSTs’ responses documented their …

Copyright And Parody: Touring The Certainties Of Intellectual Property And Restitution, Wendy J. Gordon Jan 2021

Copyright And Parody: Touring The Certainties Of Intellectual Property And Restitution, Wendy J. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

The essay that follows examines the boundary between two sets of rules. The first set arises under the law of Restitution, particularly the rule that volunteers ordinarily need not be rewarded. (Another way to state this same Restitution rule is to say that the retention of benefit voluntarily conferred is ordinarily not "unjust enrichment".) The second set of rules are those of Intellectual Property law, which creates property in a special kind of volunteer. My argument is simply that the law of Restitution leads almost directly to the law of Intellectual Property, though the two areas are premised on diametrically …

Ten Truths About Tax Havens: Inclusion And The "Liberia" Problem, Steven A. Dean, Attiya Waris Jan 2021

Ten Truths About Tax Havens: Inclusion And The "Liberia" Problem, Steven A. Dean, Attiya Waris

Faculty Scholarship

There has been a decades-long effort to repair an increasingly fragile international tax system. One reason it has foundered has been what we identify as the "Liberia problem." In 2000, the powerful Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development identified Liberia but not Switzerland as a tax haven and targeted it for sanctions. It did not go well. During the two decades since, everything has changed; yet seemingly from this lens of inclusion, nothing has changed at all. Awkwardly similar "blacklists" still target "Black" and "Brown" jurisdictions despite the fact that experts mean something quite different when they speak of the …

A Constitutional Moment In Cross-Border Taxation, Steven Dean Jan 2021

A Constitutional Moment In Cross-Border Taxation, Steven Dean

Faculty Scholarship

The complex pattern of formal and informal rules that governs the taxation of cross-border transactions tends to be thought of as rigidly path dependent. (Rixen, 2011) In truth, the Classification and Assignment Constitution has repeatedly undergone sudden changes initiated by influential actors. A failure to acknowledge the power wielded by a handful of states and organizations nurtures an evolutionary myth of cross-border taxation, but a close examination reveals traces of intelligent design, with repeated interventions altering the course of its development.

A century ago a material constitution coalesced around an elegant but flawed algorithm providing for the "classification and assignment …

Long Noncoding Rnas And Their Therapeutic Promise In Diabetic Nephropathy, Juan D Coellar, Jianyin Long, Farhad R Danesh Jan 2021

Long Noncoding Rnas And Their Therapeutic Promise In Diabetic Nephropathy, Juan D Coellar, Jianyin Long, Farhad R Danesh

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Recent advances in large-scale RNA sequencing and genome-wide profiling projects have unraveled a heterogeneous group of RNAs, collectively known as long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), which play central roles in many diverse biological processes. Importantly, an association between aberrant expression of lncRNAs and diverse human pathologies has been reported, including in a variety of kidney diseases. These observations have raised the possibility that lncRNAs may represent unexploited potential therapeutic targets for kidney diseases. Several important questions regarding the functionality of lncRNAs and their impact in kidney diseases, however, remain to be carefully addressed. Here, we provide an overview of the main …

The interaction of extracellular matrix (ECM) components with hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is thought to perpetuate fibrosis by stimulating signaling pathways that drive HSC activation, survival and proliferation. Consequently, disrupting the interaction between ECM and HSCs is considered a therapeutical avenue although respective targets and underlying mechanisms remain to be established. Here we have interrogated the interaction between type VI collagen (CVI) and HSCs based on the observation that CVI is 10-fold upregulated during fibrosis, closely associates with HSCs in vivo and promotes cell proliferation and cell survival in cancer cell lines. We exposed primary rat HSCs and a rat …

Gene drives hold promise for use in controlling insect vectors of diseases, agricultural pests, and for conservation of ecosystems against invasive species. At the same time, this technology comes with potential risks that include unknown downstream effects on entire ecosystems as well as the accidental or nefarious spread of organisms that carry the gene drive machinery. A code of ethics can be a useful tool for all parties involved in the development and regulation of gene drives and can be used to help ensure that a balanced analysis of risks, benefits, and values is taken into consideration in the interest …

Antibiotic Development Incentives That Reflect Societal Value Of Antibiotics, Helen Boucher, Thomas M. File, Vance Fowler, Amanda Jezek, John Rex, Kevin Outterson Jan 2021

Antibiotic Development Incentives That Reflect Societal Value Of Antibiotics, Helen Boucher, Thomas M. File, Vance Fowler, Amanda Jezek, John Rex, Kevin Outterson

Faculty Scholarship

TO THE EDITOR—Rome and Kesselheim [1] claimed that rewarding developers of novel antibiotics with transferable exclusivity vouchers is an expensive approach to promoting antibiotic development. This analysis is incomplete as it focuses only on the cost of bringing new antibiotics to market without acknowledging their societal value. The authors also did not suggest an alternative approach. With patients running out of treatment options for resistant infections, failing to strengthen the antibiotic pipeline is not a reasonable option.

Rethinking "Political" Considerations In Investment, David H. Webber Jan 2021

Rethinking "Political" Considerations In Investment, David H. Webber

Faculty Scholarship

Five years ago, Professor David H. Webber was invited to deliver an address both to our Delaware Law School community and to the Delaware Bench and Bar as Visiting Scholar in Residence of Corporate and Business Law. Webber's Speech, "Rethinking 'Political' Considerations in Investment," made several predictions about the rise of politicized investment which were quite prescient. As relevant today as when it was delivered, this piece explores the consideration of investment factors outside the traditional realm of shareholder profit maximization, both in its current state and in the future. Webber's analysis of how investors balance the role of capital …

As the University of New Mexico responded to the coronavirus pandemic with emergency building closures and a shift to online services, the University Libraries faced challenges making and maintaining personal connections with users in the absence of face-to-face contact. Recognizing that necessary public health restrictions isolated all students, faculty, and staff to some extent, a science librarian and an English librarian collaborated to develop a series of three Zoom-facilitated programs that provided fun activities (i.e., a movie watch party, a book discussion, and a team trivia game) to engage a socially distanced campus community while highlighting various library resources. They …

Dual Panics: A Media Analysis Of Narratives On The Role Of Unauthorized Migration In America's Overdose Crisis, Morgan Godvin Jan 2021

Dual Panics: A Media Analysis Of Narratives On The Role Of Unauthorized Migration In America's Overdose Crisis, Morgan Godvin

University Honors Theses

Background: The realms of drug policy and immigration policy have long been fueled by misinformation, where sensationalism and panics help shore up political support. Most recently, the "border crisis" has been invoked to explain the "overdose crisis" in mass media narratives. Although the increase in migration is being blamed for illicit drug flows, drug importation occurs primarily through legal points-of-entry. The extent and excess visibility of false narratives linking overdose to migration in mainstream media is unknown.

Methods: We used the Media Cloud ecosystem to compile and characterize mainstream media content published between June 2021 and July 2021 regarding the …

Genome-Wide Sequencing In Clinical Genetic Counseling, Sydney Schulz Jan 2021

Genome-Wide Sequencing In Clinical Genetic Counseling, Sydney Schulz

University Honors Theses

Genome-wide Sequencing provides an exciting opportunity for the future of genetic counseling. However, the efficacy of GWS in covering G-C rich regions of DNA, detection of variants, coverage of the exome, reanalysis, and identifying disease origin in non-coding regions of DNA remains to be proven. GWS provides a diagnostic success rate of 36-73% in pediatric cases and 50-67% of adult rare disease and alters the path of necessary care offered by genetic counselors. Limitations significantly hamper the success of GWS in a genetic counseling setting, such as difficulties in obtaining consent for testing and data storage, the high rate of …
