Perception Of Undergraduate Medical Students On Integration Of Radiological Anatomy For Pre-Clinical Teaching, Reshma Mohamed Ansari
Perception Of Undergraduate Medical Students On Integration Of Radiological Anatomy For Pre-Clinical Teaching, Reshma Mohamed Ansari
Student Works (2020-2029)
Integration is the way forward to enable accommodation of the ever-expanding content in medical education. While revising the curriculum, stakeholders’ perception aids to tailor a curriculum matching their needs. Radiological anatomy (RA) is an integrated discipline of topographical, cross-sectional anatomy with radiological representation of structural anatomy. Though RA has been widely incorporated in most of the medical curricula, there is a dearth of standardization in terms of student learning time (SLT), content and teachers. This study was planned to record the perception of MBBS students on RA teaching in pre-clinical years in University of Cyberjaya, Malaysia. A modified, piloted and …

Investigating The Development Of Perceptions And Behavioural Intentions Towards People Living With Hiv (Plhiv) Among Pre-Clinical Medical Students In The University Of Malaya, Calvin Christopher Willims Fernandez
Student Works (2020-2029)
Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, there has been a high prevalence of stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV (PLHIV). They manifest in people’s attitudes and behaviour, and in various contexts including education, employment and healthcare. For the latter specifically, stigma-driven behaviours by healthcare practitioners have resulted in poorer health outcomes for PLHIV, where they are humiliated, isolated and in some cases, even refused treatment. This subsequently leads to an increase in mental health issues and other damaging health behaviours among PLHIV. Numerous studies have explored the manifestation of these stigmatizing attitudes and behaviours …

The Global Benefits Of The Law & Economics Framework In Legal Education: Using Class Simulations To Support Law Student Learning (Second In Series), Patrick H. Gaughan
The Global Benefits Of The Law & Economics Framework In Legal Education: Using Class Simulations To Support Law Student Learning (Second In Series), Patrick H. Gaughan
Akron Law Faculty Publications
This is the second in a series of articles proposing that the globalization of markets necessitates the integration of the Law & Economics Framework into legal education. To this end, this article proposes using classroom simulations loosely based upon Garrett Hardin’s classic article, “The Tragedy of the Commons.” As proposed, the simple and flexible core simulation can easily be altered to address various types of issues while also serving as an engaging class introduction to the Law & Economics Framework. Importantly, law faculty can easily adapt the simulation to account for local sensibilities and be used without requiring a mastery …

Deadly “Toxins”: A National Empirical Study Of Racial Bias And Future Dangerousness Determinations, G. Ben Cohen, Justin D. Levinson, Koichi Hioki
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Since the beginning of the modern Death Penalty Era, one of the most important—and fraught—areas of capital punishment has been the so-called “future dangerousness” determination, a threshold inquiry that literally rests the defendant’s life or death on jurors’ predictions of the future. An overwhelming majority of capital executions have occurred in jurisdictions that embrace the perceived legitimacy of the future dangerousness inquiry, despite its obvious flaws and potential connection to the age-old racial disparities that continue to plague capital punishment. This Article presents, and empirically tests, the hypothesis that jurors’ future dangerousness assessments cannot be separated from their racial and …
Jacobson 2.0: Police Power In The Time Of Covid-19, James R. Steiner-Dillon
Jacobson 2.0: Police Power In The Time Of Covid-19, James R. Steiner-Dillon
Akron Law Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic has become a legal, as well as a public health, crisis. In response to the pandemic, state and municipal governments have imposed unprecedented constraints on Americans’ daily activities. These restrictions provoked a wave of constitutional challenges that have revealed the antiquated doctrinal foundations of states’ police power in the area of public health. It has been over a century since the Supreme Court, in Jacobson v. Massachusetts, articulated a broadly deferential approach to constitutional review of state orders issued in response to a public health emergency. The constitutional order has changed since Jacobson was decided; many provisions …
Rulifying Reasonable Expectations: How Katz And Originalism Can Work Together To Create A More Determinate Fourth Amendment, Michael Gentithes
Rulifying Reasonable Expectations: How Katz And Originalism Can Work Together To Create A More Determinate Fourth Amendment, Michael Gentithes
Akron Law Faculty Publications
For decades, commentators have decried the Supreme Court’s Fourth Amendment search jurisprudence as a hopelessly confusing jumble. Critics save their harshest barbs for the judicially created “reasonable expectations of privacy” test, suggesting that it provides little guidance and leaves search cases open to wide judicial discretion. Motivated by such critiques, several Justices have recently claimed that an originalist approach could replace the reasonable expectations test, limit judicial discretion, and clarify the Fourth Amendment’s meaning. This Article provides a comprehensive defense of the reasonable expectations test against originalist calls to abandon it. It notes two flaws in the originalist response. First, …

A Global Pandemic Remedy To Vaccine Nationalism, Emily Michiko Morris, Orit Fischman-Afori, Miriam Marcowitz-Bitton
Akron Law Faculty Publications
Recognizing the need for flexibility in times of emergency and building upon knowledge gained from existing international and domestic compulsory licensing laws, we propose a global, centralized scheme to provide access to vaccines during pandemics. In many ways our proposal mirrors some of the World Health Organization's (WHO) COVID-19 vaccine initiatives but consolidates and expands them into a much more efficacious form. Under the proposed model, the WHO's declaration of a pandemic would trigger a global procurement and distribution scheme for vaccines. The proposed scheme would be mandatory and would require that all countries operate as one buyer vis-a-vis vaccine …

Ministry Matters: A Study Of The Relationship Between Campus Ministry And Socialization, Rachel Jean Kitrell
Honors Program Theses
The present study investigated the relationship between involvement in campus ministry and students’ socialization to the university. Campus ministry participants (N=62) representing eight of eleven registered campus ministries completed an online 39-question Qualtrics survey that sought to evaluate their involvement in ministry activities, social involvement in their campus ministry, social involvement in their university, and socialization to the university through history, politics, and goals and values. A significant positive correlation was found between involvement in ministry activities and social involvement in campus ministry as well as between each of the three socialization variables. There were also significant positive correlations found …

Joint Carrier Frequency And Phase Offset Estimation Algorithm For Cpm-Dsssbased Secure Point-To-Point Communication, Saima Shehzadi, Farzana Kulsoom, Muhammad Zeeshan, Qasim Umar Khan, Shahzad Amin Sheikh
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A point-to-point (P2P) communication system based on the CPM-DSSS scheme ensures reliability, security, and antijamming capabilities. However, for reliable detection of data carrier synchronization of CPM-DSSS based system is one of the requirements. This paper presents a joint algorithm for carrier frequency offset (CFO) and carrier phase offset (CPO) estimation for CPM-DSSS based P2P system. The results indicate that the proposed CFO estimator is unbiased and can accurately estimate a wide range of offsets. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is compared with another research work. The results show that the proposed CFO and CPO estimation algorithm outperforms its counterpart with a …
A Hybrid Numerical Model For Long-Range Electromagnetic Wave Propagation, Gül Yesa Altun, Özlem Özgün
A Hybrid Numerical Model For Long-Range Electromagnetic Wave Propagation, Gül Yesa Altun, Özlem Özgün
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A hybrid numerical model is presented for solving long range electromagnetic wave propagation problems involving objects on or above the ground surface by hybridizing the two-way split-step parabolic equation (2W-SSPE) method with the method of moments (MoM). The advantages of the proposed model are twofold: (i) It reduces the staircasing error in irregular terrain modeling, which usually occurs when the standard SSPE method is used alone. This is achieved by employing the MoM to more accurately obtain the scattered fields from slanted/curved surfaces. (ii) It enables the SSPE method to handle the problems involving objects above the Earth's surface, which …

Comparison Of Metaheuristic Optimization Algorithms With A New Modifieddeb Feasibility Constraint Handling Technique, Murat Erhan Çi̇men, Zeynep Gari̇p, Ali̇ Fuat Boz
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, the modification of the Deb feasibility method is considered to solve the constrained optimization problems. In the developed modified Deb feasibility constraint method, the third rule in its procedure was revised in order to increase the performance of the Deb feasibility constraint handling method. The innovation in the method is based on generating a new individual by using both possible solutions that violate the constraints in the method used for solving the problem. In detail, discussions were given about the application and usefulness of six constrained handling techniques. Furthermore, genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, Harris hawks optimization, …

Medical Image Fusion With Convolutional Neural Network In Multiscaletransform Domain, Asan Abas, Hasan Erdi̇nç Koçer, Nurdan Baykan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Multimodal medical image fusion approaches have been commonly used to diagnose diseases and involve merging multiple images of different modes to achieve superior image quality and to reduce uncertainty and redundancy in order to increase the clinical applicability. In this paper, we proposed a new medical image fusion algorithm based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) to obtain a weight map for multiscale transform (curvelet/ non-subsampled shearlet transform) domains that enhance the textual and edge property. The aim of the method is achieving the best visualization and highest details in a single fused image without losing spectral and anatomical details. …

Detection Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Disease By Variational Modedecomposition And Convolution Neural Network Methods From Event-Relatedpotential Signals, Fatma Lati̇foğlu, Firat Orhan Bulucu, Rami̇s İleri̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease, is a neurological disease that occurs as a result of damage to the nerves in the brain and restriction of muscle movements. Electroencephalography (EEG) is the most common method used in brain imaging to study neurological disorders. Diagnosis of neurological disorders such as ALS, Parkinson's, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is important in biomedical studies. In recent years, deep learning (DL) models have been started to be applied in the literature for the diagnosis of these diseases. In this study, event-related potentials (ERPs) were obtained from EEG signals obtained as a …

Globalization And Cultural Attitudes Of Teachers In Faculties Of Education In Egypt, Marwa El-Shinawy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the cultural orientation of the students in the faculties of education in Egypt towards the phenomenon of globalization as manifested in the visions of the professors and the students, and the curricula of these faculties. Thus, the study aimed to explore to what extent the cultural attitudes of the prospective teachers and the professors in the faculties of education in Egypt motivate/ hinder the globalization of teacher education.
The second section presented the theoretical perspective, which is the transformationalists view of globalization. This perspective represents a mid-way point between the Hyper- globalists …

Global Stablecoins And China’S Cbdc: New Moneys With New Impacts On The Financial System?, Wei Shen, Heng Wang
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Digital currencies are reshaping the financial, monetary, and regulatory landscape. There are at least two routes for the development of digital currencies. One is global stablecoins (e.g., Diem that is previously named Libra), issued by private players, while the other is central bank digital currency (CBDC) issued by central banks, with China’s CBDC as an example and possibly the first CBDC that will be issued by a major economy. Albeit in their rudimentary stages, global stablecoins and China’s CBDC are likely to disrupt the current financial system and challenge existing financial regulation. This article examines two crucial but under-explored questions: …

Footloose With Green Shoes: Can Underwriters Profit From Ipo Underpricing?, Patrick M. Corrigan
Journal Articles
Why are green shoe options used in initial public offerings (IPOs)? And why do underwriters usually short sell an issuer’s stock in connection with its IPO? Are underwriters permitted to profit from these trading positions?
/="/">
/="/">Scholars have long argued that underwriters use green shoe options together with short sales to facilitate price stabilizing activities, and that U.S. securities laws prohibit underwriters from using green shoe options to profit from IPO underpricing. This Article finds the conventional wisdom lacking. I find that underwriters may permissibly profit from IPO underpricing by pairing purchases under a green shoe option with offshore …

The Right To Development, Integral Human Development, And Integral Ecology In The Amazon, Diane A. Desierto, Ilaria Schnyder Von Wartensee
Journal Articles
From the Article
This article discusses the reorientation of environmental protection in Amazonia away from the paradigm of individual and collective natural resource management of regional or global commons, to the more radical thesis of Integral Ecology as the vindication of human dignity, environmental stewardship and collective responsibility - a concept deeply related to the Church's own pioneering of Integral Human Development as the 'authentic development development of every person and of the whole person'. Under the concept of integral Ecology, we argue that this expressive elaboration of the Catholic Church's core social teaching of Integral Human Development ultimately hearkens …
Fiduciary Judgment Rules, Julian Velasco
Fiduciary Judgment Rules, Julian Velasco
Journal Articles
Because of the strong moral rhetoric and robust equitable remedies available in fiduciary law, it is not surprising to find lawyers and legal scholars seeking to expand the reach of fiduciary law principles into new relationships and new areas of law. However, expansion often does not work very well because of the demanding and pervasive nature of fiduciary duties. Thus, jurists often turn to the business judgment rule and its policy of underenforcement of fiduciary duties as a way to fit fiduciary law principles into other areas of law. The problem with this approach is that it is based on …

Tuesday Afternoons With Schlegel, Barry Cushman
Journal Articles
I confess that I’m not at all certain why I was invited to this distinguished gathering. I suppose that it’s because Schlegel and I are friends; but that just pushes the mystery back a remove. Because as Jack surely recognizes, it is not at all obvious that (or why) we should be friends. We are from different generations—Schlegel is my senior by nearly twenty years. I don’t imagine that anyone would suggest that our personal styles bear a strong resemblance to one another. And our approaches to scholarship are almost antagonistic. Jack’s message accompanying the invitation to this conference strongly …
Leverage, Randy J. Kozel
Leverage, Randy J. Kozel

Sometimes government operates by inducement rather than order. Congress distributes money to the states. A state grants funds to nonprofit organizations. An administrative agency offers wages and professional opportunities to its staff. A high school provides instruction to its students. In each situation, the government furnishes something of value. And in each situation, it asks something in return-whether implementation of a government program, forbearance from activities deemed inconsistent with operational goals, conduct in pursuit of an employment mission, or compliance with standards of academic discipline. Though they arise in different contexts, these varied forms of government action present the same …
Measuring The Art Of International Law, Mary Ellen O'Connell
Measuring The Art Of International Law, Mary Ellen O'Connell
Journal Articles
Social science methodology is a useful adjunct to law, but it cannot replace the humanist ideas that constitute law. Scholars developed social science at the end of the nineteenth century and were soon using it to measure and assess material facts associated with far older intellectual disciplines like law. They have been able to confirm facts about such issues as the origins and impact of law. These studies rely, however, on a humanist definition of the object of the study. Humanist methods reveal that law is the result of transcendent concepts developed through natural law method. By the early twenty-first …

Roe And Casey Were Grievously Wrong And Should Be Overruled, Charles J. Cooper, Richard W. Garnett, Peter A. Patterson, Brian W. Barnes, John D. Ohlendorf
Journal Articles
This essay, based on an amicus curiae brief filed in the Dobbs case, explains that the Roe and Casey decisions were "grievously wrong", that no traditional stare decisis considerations weigh in favor of retaining them, and that they should be overruled.
Twenty-Third Amendment Problems Confronting District Of Columbia Statehood, Derek T. Muller
Twenty-Third Amendment Problems Confronting District Of Columbia Statehood, Derek T. Muller
Journal Articles
Proposals to make the District of Columbia a state would leave behind a new, substantially smaller District named "Capital." The Twenty-Third Amendment guarantees that the new District would have three electoral votes, no matter how few people reside in it. Proposals that would make the District of Columbia state do not adequately address this issue. Statehood, if it proceeds, should be conditioned on repeal of the Twenty-Third Amendment. Potential alternative statutory solutions to the Twenty-Third Amendment--which do not exist in recent bills that Congress has considered--present constitutional, legal, and practical problems.
In one sense, the scope of this Article is …
