Tensor Completion And Total Variation Denoising And Deblurring In Tensor Spaces, Fatoumata Sanogo
All ETDs from UAB
Tensor completion is a higher-order generalization of matrix completion where the goal is to recover a low-rank tensor from a partially observed tensor. Here we work on a numerical method to reconstructs a tensor (matrix) with missing entries by finding the optimal factors through linear least squares and the singular vector through a proximal algorithm of soft thresholding. The performance of our algorithm is tested on color images and surveillance videos. In addition, we continued working on those algorithm to get an optimal way of finding the regularization parameter to improve the quality of our output. For this purpose we used …

A Method Of Measuring The Value Of Minor League Sports To A Community: An Illustration Of The Application Of Economic Impact Ananlyses, Dennis H. Tootelian, Audrey G. Mikhailitchenko
Global Sport Business Journal
The American public, as well as those in other countries, has long been fascinated with athletes, sports teams, and sports events. As a result, one of the dilemmas confronting city managers in their efforts to serve their residents is whether to seek to add or retain a professional sports team to their city’s leisure/entertainment mix. In addition to assessing resident interest in spectator sports as a leisure-time activity, one of the more critical questions they must address in their decision-making processes is: How much economic value is there in having a professional sports team in the city? Economic value is …

Evaluating The Moral Framing Of Disaffiliation: Sociological And Pastoral Perspectives On The Rise Of The “Nones”, Brett C. Hoover
Evaluating The Moral Framing Of Disaffiliation: Sociological And Pastoral Perspectives On The Rise Of The “Nones”, Brett C. Hoover
Theological Studies Faculty Works
The wave of religious disaffiliation that began in the 1990s in the United States has gone from a concern of pastoral leaders to perhaps the concern of pastoral leaders. This article examines a moral framing of religious disaffiliation—where disaffiliation is seen as a symptom of larger moral struggles in society. After a review of contemporary sociological research on the phenomenon of disaffiliation, its roots and causes, the article explores the thinking of the influential Catholic bishop and media entrepreneur Robert Barron as an example of the moral framing of religious disaffiliation. Barron operates as a “moral entrepreneur” in today’s media-rich …

Sounds Of Science: Copyright Infringement In Ai Music Generator Outputs, Eric Sunray
Sounds Of Science: Copyright Infringement In Ai Music Generator Outputs, Eric Sunray
Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology
The music business is no stranger to disruptive technology. The industry’s apparent comeback from the devastating downturn caused by illegal file sharing seems to have arrived just in time for what may be an even more disruptive technological phenomenon: artificial intelligence (“AI”). Much has been said about the implications of AI-generated music, ranging from issues of ownership, to rights of publicity. However, there has been surprisingly little discussion of infringement in the AI systems’ outputs. By examining the functionality of AI music generators through the lens of de minimis use case law, this paper will explain how the outputs of …

This article analyzes how the FTC’s Endorsement Guide regulating the advertising of e-cigarette products should be applied to social media influencers. The struggle to regulate e-cigarettes by the FDA and the FTC has led to different advertising methods, which either comply with or neglect the FTC’s Endorsement Guide. This article evaluates the federal government’s reaction to the e-cigarette health crisis, followed by a review of the FTC’s previous actions addressing Endorsement Guide violations, along with the consequences on other companies’ marketing strategies. Finally, this article reviews influencer liability standards for Endorsement Guide violations and develops recommendations to improve those standards.
Arbitration In The Age Of Covid: Examining Arbitration's Move Online, Amy J. Schmitz
Arbitration In The Age Of Covid: Examining Arbitration's Move Online, Amy J. Schmitz
Faculty Publications
Arbitration has been moving online over time with the growth of the Internet and Online Dispute Resolution ("ODR"), which includes use of technology to assist online negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and variations thereof Online Arbitration ("OArb ") is nonetheless a unique subset of ODR because it usually culminates in a final and binding award by a neutral third party that is enforceable under the Federal Arbitration Act ("FAA"). Indeed, I have written about OArb on prior occasions, due to its unique status under the FAA and other arbitration laws. However, OArb was relatively limited until the COVID-19 pandemic sparked the acceleration …
Mitochondrial Energetics With Transmembrane Electrostatically Localized Protons: Do We Have A Thermotrophic Feature?, James Weifu Lee
Mitochondrial Energetics With Transmembrane Electrostatically Localized Protons: Do We Have A Thermotrophic Feature?, James Weifu Lee
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Transmembrane electrostatically localized protons (TELP) theory has been recently recognized as an important addition over the classic Mitchell’s chemiosmosis; thus, the proton motive force (pmf) is largely contributed from TELP near the membrane. As an extension to this theory, a novel phenomenon of mitochondrial thermotrophic function is now characterized by biophysical analyses of pmf in relation to the TELP concentrations at the liquid-membrane interface. This leads to the conclusion that the oxidative phosphorylation also utilizes environmental heat energy associated with the thermal kinetic energy (kBT) of TELP in mitochondria. The local pmf is now calculated to be in …
Evaluation Of Robust Epoxy Resin Sealants For Wellbore Integrity Applications, Mohammed Mousa M Alkhamis
Evaluation Of Robust Epoxy Resin Sealants For Wellbore Integrity Applications, Mohammed Mousa M Alkhamis
Doctoral Dissertations
"During the drilling and completion phases of oil and gas wells, cement is placed in the wellbore as a barrier between the casing and the formation. All casing strings must be cemented to protect and support the casing, and to isolate production zones. The primary cement must prevent the wellbore fluids from migrating in an annular flow path so as to allow the wells to be utilized without any control problems. The primary cement may fail to deliver full zonal isolation due to several reasons such as insufficient mud removal before the cementing, casing expansion, and contraction, high fluid losses, …
Multi-Fidelity Modeling For Aerothermal Analysis Of Deployable Planetary Entry Technologies, Mario J. Santos
Multi-Fidelity Modeling For Aerothermal Analysis Of Deployable Planetary Entry Technologies, Mario J. Santos
Doctoral Dissertations
“NASA is developing deployable entry technologies in the form of the Hypersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (HIAD) and the Adaptable Deployable Entry Technology (ADEPT) vehicles to support human exploration of Mars. To ensure that these technologies are reliable under uncertain entry conditions and extreme aerothermal environments, uncertainty quantification must be integrated into the design process which typically requires large number of high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations with prohibitively high computational cost. To address this challenge, construction of multi-fidelity aerothermal response predictions which combine low-fidelity correlations with fewer high-fidelity CFD models in a way that produces highly accurate surrogates with reduced …
Enhanced Heavy Oil Recovery By Low Salinity Polymer Flood Combined With Microgel Treatment, Yang Zhao
Enhanced Heavy Oil Recovery By Low Salinity Polymer Flood Combined With Microgel Treatment, Yang Zhao
Doctoral Dissertations
“Heavy oil resources account for a large portion of the total oil reserves around the world. The target heavy oil reservoir is located on Alaska’s North Slope (ANS). Advantages of low-salinity HPAM polymer (LSP) over high-salinity polymer (HSP) were demonstrated. LSP could recover more oil with 40% less polymer consumption. No additional oil was recovered by HSP after LSP flood. The first-ever polymer flood pilot on ANS showed remarkable success regarding water cut reduction, oil production increase, delayed breakthrough, and projected oil recovery improvement. Polymer alone was insufficient to achieve satisfactory recovery as the reservoirs were highly heterogeneous. Microgels could …
An Investigation Of Unsteady Thermal Exchange Processes In Geothermal Heat Exchangers, Ganesh Ravi Shanker
An Investigation Of Unsteady Thermal Exchange Processes In Geothermal Heat Exchangers, Ganesh Ravi Shanker
Doctoral Dissertations
“Geothermal heat exchangers, has become one of the highly recognized non conventional heat exchangers as they utilize renewable energy source earth to initiate the thermal energy transfer. However, these heat exchangers suffer from a expensive installation cost due to their conservative design model, thereby facilitating the need to identify and improve the design. In this dissertation, three gaps, which identifies improvement over conservative design were investigated, to assess the heat exchanger performance. In the first approach, borehole thermal and geometrical properties were investigated keeping the outlet leg of the heat exchanger as adiabatic, which neglects the thermal short-circuiting between the …
Adaptive Dynamic Programming Methods For Tracking Current Control Of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive, Hamad Alharkan
Adaptive Dynamic Programming Methods For Tracking Current Control Of Switched Reluctance Motor Drive, Hamad Alharkan
Doctoral Dissertations
“This research investigates the application of adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) methods for the current control of switched reluctance motors (SRM). Since the traditional current controllers have large current ripples that increase torque ripples and acoustic noise, optimal tracking controllers using reinforcement learning (RL) approaches are introduced as an alternative adaptive technique for SRM drives. The proposed optimal tracking controllers can minimize current ripples and cope with uncertainties within the inductance profile of the SRM. The work is composed of three papers. In the first paper, a novel Q-learning scheduling method for the current controller of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) …

"Structural DNA nanotechnology utilizes DNA molecules as building blocks to fabricate ordered artificial nanostructures at the molecular level. Among all DNA-based techniques, DNA origami has been considered as one of the most powerful tools for constructing artificial nanostructures with excellent programmability and addressability. Currently, most DNA origami nanostructures are static and do not have the ability to response to environmental stimulation. The development of environmental-responsive DNA origami nanostructures is a critical step towards the realization of intelligent dynamic DNA origami-based nanodevices. This research focuses on the design and fabrication process of both static and dynamic DNA origami nanostructures and their …
Seismic Shifts: The Covid-19 Pandemic's Gendered Fault Lines And Implications For International Law, Shruti Rana
Seismic Shifts: The Covid-19 Pandemic's Gendered Fault Lines And Implications For International Law, Shruti Rana
Faculty Publications
As we look towards the pandemic's end, this article examines the pandemic's impacts on the international legal order through a gendered lens. It argues that in the short-term, the pandemic reinforces public-private divides in international law, reinvigorating previous debates over the state's power in social relations-its role in protecting people from, as opposed to perpetrating, harm. It argues that in the long-term, these developments threaten to unravel the most recent gains in international law and global governance that have operated to support and expand the recognition of human rights to marginalised groups. Left unaddressed, this unraveling will further entrench such …

Weeds As Hosts Of Plant Parasitic Nematodes In Subtropical Agriculture Systems, Habraham F. Lopez, Pushpa Soti, Ganpati B. Jagdale, Parwinder Grewal, Alexis Racelis
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
With a nearly year-round growing season, tropical and subtropical regions are plagued with a myriad of agro-nomic challenges, including near-continuous weeds and invertebrate pests including plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs). A poor understanding of the presence and geographical distributions of these pests complicate their man-agement, especially in organic farming systems. This work attempts to document the interaction of PPNs with the major weeds in the semi-arid region of south Texas. Five organically managed farms were surveyed for four weeds of regional agronomic importance including silverleaf nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium), common sunflower (Helianthus annuus), false ragweed (Parthenium hysterophorus), and London rocket (Sisymbrium irio). Soil …
