Difference Makers: A Faith Integration Art And Writing Project, Jennifer Blair

The Christian Librarian

An internal faith integration project grant at a private, Christian evangelical Southern California University was awarded to one library faculty member in the university library. This grant funded a faith-based art and writing project in the library based on the theme of being a difference maker, a part of the university’s mission for undergraduate and graduate students over the course of one traditional academic year. The grant funded supplies towards the project and scholarships to participating students. The project was led in the library to: enhance student engagement, integrate faith and art, and provide a shared experience with students. Inquiry-based …

Characterizing Individuals Accessing Mental Health Services In The Uae: A Focus On Youth Living In Dubai, Mariapaola Barbato, Shaikha Al Hemeiri, Shorouk Nafie, Baraa A. Dhuhair, Nadia T. Dabbagh Dec 2021

Characterizing Individuals Accessing Mental Health Services In The Uae: A Focus On Youth Living In Dubai, Mariapaola Barbato, Shaikha Al Hemeiri, Shorouk Nafie, Baraa A. Dhuhair, Nadia T. Dabbagh

All Works

Background: Most mental health issues develop during adolescence, therefore identifying youth mental health needs and pathways to care is critical to improve prevention. To date, studies have typically focused on Western samples, while the impact of cultural diversity on perception of health and illness, and pathways to care, remain poorly understood. To address the shortage of studies conducted in the Arab world, and particularly in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the present investigation aims to identify the characteristics of youth accessing mental health services in Dubai. Methods: Data was collected retrospectively from patients’ records at Rashid Hospital Child Psychiatry Service. …

The Effect Of Different Methods To Identify, And Scenarios Used To Address Energy Intake Misestimation On Dietary Patterns Derived By Cluster Analysis, Geraldine Lo Siou, Alianu K. Akawung, Nathan M. Solbak, Kathryn L. Mcdonald, Ala Al Rajabi, Heather K. Whelan, Sharon I. Kirkpatrick

All Works

Background: All self-reported dietary intake data are characterized by measurement error, and validation studies indicate that the estimation of energy intake (EI) is particularly affected. Methods: Using self-reported food frequency and physical activity data from Alberta’s Tomorrow Project participants (n = 9847 men 16,241 women), we compared the revised-Goldberg and the predicted total energy expenditure methods in their ability to identify misreporters of EI. We also compared dietary patterns derived by k-means clustering under different scenarios where misreporters are included in the cluster analysis (Inclusion); excluded prior to completing the cluster analysis (ExBefore); excluded after completing the cluster analysis (ExAfter); …

Acute Inositol-Stabilized Arginine Silicate Improves Cognitive Outcomes In Healthy Adults, Joshua L. Gills, Anthony Campitelli, Megan Jones, Sally Paulson, Jennifer Rae Myers, Erica N. Madero, Jordan M. Glenn, James Komorowski, Michelle Gray Dec 2021

Acute Inositol-Stabilized Arginine Silicate Improves Cognitive Outcomes In Healthy Adults, Joshua L. Gills, Anthony Campitelli, Megan Jones, Sally Paulson, Jennifer Rae Myers, Erica N. Madero, Jordan M. Glenn, James Komorowski, Michelle Gray

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Faculty Publications and Presentations

Inositol-stabilized arginine silicate (ASI) is an ergogenic aid that upregulates nitric oxide. Acute ASI supplementation improves working memory and processing speed in young adults but there is a lack of data examining other cognitive tasks. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine acute ASI effects on young healthy adults by assessing multiple cognitive domains. Nineteen young adults (20.9 ± 3.2 years) completed this randomized, double-blind, crossover study consuming ASI (1.5 g ASI + 12 g dextrose) and placebo (12 g dextrose). The participants completed the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and two digital cognitive …

Cross-State Differences In The Processes Generating Black–White Disparities In Neonatal Mortality, Benjamin Sosnaud Dec 2021

Cross-State Differences In The Processes Generating Black–White Disparities In Neonatal Mortality, Benjamin Sosnaud

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

The U.S. Black neonatal mortality rate is more than twice the White rate. This dramatic disparity can be decomposed into two components: (1) disparities due to differences in the distribution of birth weights, and (2) disparities due to differences in birth weight–specific mortality. I utilize this distinction to explore how the social context into which infants are born contributes to gaps in mortality between Black and White neonates. I analyze variation in Black–White differences in neonatal mortality across 33 states using 1995–2010 data. For each state, I calculate the contribution of differences in birth weight distribution versus differences in birth …

Cutinase From Amycolatopsis Mediterannei: Marked Activation And Stabilisation In Deep Eutectic Solvents, Yeqi Tan, Gemma K. Kinsella, Gary T. Henehan, Barry J. Ryan Dec 2021

Cutinase From Amycolatopsis Mediterannei: Marked Activation And Stabilisation In Deep Eutectic Solvents, Yeqi Tan, Gemma K. Kinsella, Gary T. Henehan, Barry J. Ryan

Articles

Amycolatopsis mediterranei cutinase (AmCut) has potential biocatalytic applications in plastics degradation and ester synthesis. Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) are next generation biodegradable solvents for biocatalysis. However, the behaviour of cutinase enzymes in DES is little studied. Herein, we examine the effect of selected DES, and their components, on AmCut activity and stability. Low amounts (10% v/v) of DES (choline chloride:glycerol; 1:1 mole ratio) caused striking activation of AmCut (over 2-fold). Further examination showed that the choline chloride component of DES caused the observed activation. This is the first report of activation of a cutinase by a small molecule. At higher …
