"Sporting Life On The Line": Prostitution In Progressive Era Pensacola, James R. Mcgovern Nov 2021

"Sporting Life On The Line": Prostitution In Progressive Era Pensacola, James R. Mcgovern

Florida Historical Quarterly

In our own time, when rapid changes in attitudes toward sexual morality are conversational coin, it is interesting to consider an experiment in the regulation of morals devised in Pensacola, Florida, in the early years of the twentieth century. As a port city, Pensacola responded historically to the sexual desires of large numbers of male transients by noteworthy permissiveness. The city displayed a similarly liberal attitude towards the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Flagler's Magnificent Hotel Ponce De Leon, Thomas Graham

Florida Historical Quarterly

St. Augustine is unusual among most American cities in that it possesses a distinct local atmosphere and character. Largely this charm stems from its Spanish heritage— the narrow streets overarched with balconies, its moss-covered coquina rock walls, and its ancient historic monuments such as the Castillo de San Marcos. But many of the buildings and homes of the city reflect the spirit of a more recent age, that of Victorian America before the turn of the century, when St. Augustine was the winter home of affluent Northerners. The most prominent Victorian buildings are three magnificent structures surrounding a central plaza …

The Role Of Communication Technologies In Restructuring Pilgrimage Journeys, Reni Polus, Neil Carr Nov 2021

The Role Of Communication Technologies In Restructuring Pilgrimage Journeys, Reni Polus, Neil Carr

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Pilgrimage has evolved alongside the evolution of communication technology. Emergent communication technology is changing how people present themselves and tell others about their experiences, including within the context of pilgrimages. Building upon this recognition, this paper examines how evolving communication technologies have changed pilgrimage using Victor Turner’s concepts of rite of passage and communitas. This conceptual paper recognises that technologies, such as the internet, mobile phones and social media, all influence the three stages of the pilgrimage ritual process: separation, liminality, and reintegration. This paper provides a conceptual clarification of the differences between how the medieval and the 21st Century …

Performance Evaluation Of Public Services: A Development Of Public Services Quality Measurement And Customer Satisfaction Model On Three Cities In Java, Gita Gayatri, Rifelly Dewi Astuti, Fanny Martdianty, Sri Daryanti

ASEAN Marketing Journal

Decentralization in Indonesia was meant to aid in the shifting of power from the central government to local governments, with the main aim to increase public services towards a more expeditious, efficient, flexible, and high quality of services, changing the paradigm from a ‘served bureaucracy’ towards a ‘bureaucracy that serves’. This research will evaluate: first, the perception of public service consumers towards the quality of public/government services, second, the perceived value received from public services, as well as third, the measurement of their satisfaction level resulting from the quality of services delivered by local governments at city level in the …

Performing The Melancholy Of City: Body, Death, And Photography, Xiao Cai Nov 2021

Performing The Melancholy Of City: Body, Death, And Photography, Xiao Cai

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Roland Barthes makes it clear in Camera Lucida that the relationship between theatre and photography is the fetish of “loss” and “death”. This extends the essence of photography to the temporal trauma of flow and stillness. As stillness in time is captured by the camera, every shot contains a double death. However, photographers’ bodily intervention not only brings movement in the photo, but also imprints “ruins” on it. As dying things, the intertextuality between the body and the ruins registers the imperceptible process of slow declination of every urban locale in time. Such is a new reflection on space in …

A Rare Type Of Uterine Rupture Following Over-The-Counter Use Of Misoprostol In Second Trimester Abortion, Nivedita Jha, Haritha Sagili, Jyotsna Sharma, Ajay K. Jha

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

The use of misoprostol in the second trimester by a woman with a uterine scar may lead to severe contractions and uterine rupture. We report a 24-year-old pregnant female patient who presented at the Emergency Department at a tertiary care hospital in Puducherry, India, in 2020 with haemorrhagic shock. She was at 16 weeks of gestation and had taken over the counter misoprostol for inducing an abortion. A quick initial resuscitation and urgent laparotomy were performed. An irreparable circumferentially avulsed uterus suspended only by round ligaments was noted. Haemostasis required internal artery ligation and immediate total hysterectomy. The patient was …

The Efficacy Of Turkish Metropolitan Municipalities On Combatting Violence Against Women Within The International And National Legal Framework, Ayşe Güneş, Feriştah Yılmaz Nov 2021

The Efficacy Of Turkish Metropolitan Municipalities On Combatting Violence Against Women Within The International And National Legal Framework, Ayşe Güneş, Feriştah Yılmaz

Journal of International Women's Studies

Gender equality policies make women’s subordination visible in both private and public spaces in local governments. Local governments have important roles and policies, such as gender awareness-raising public meetings, promoting women’s participation in the labour force, and advocating for women’s empowerment. These seek to build gender-inclusive and democratic urban centres and municipalities. Failure to achieve these objectives lead to deepened inequalities between women and men during times of crisis. The effects of measures taken to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, including stay-at-home orders, lockdowns, temporary school closures, along with increasing unemployment rates, have made women's private space open to male violence. …

Tallahassee Through The Storebooks: Era Of Radical Reconstruction, 1867-1877, Clifton Paisley

Florida Historical Quarterly

Leon was the largest and richest county in Florida at the outbreak of the Civil War. Its population numbered 12,343, and its property was assessed at $8,843,095 in 1860. It led the state in agriculture; its farms were valued at $2,482,211, and during the crop year 1859 they produced 16,686 bales of cotton, 421,654 bushels of corn, and 136,038 bushels of sweet potatoes. It ranked third in manufacturing. Twenty-six establishments in 1859 employed 239 male and seven female workers and produced products worth $261,200. The county, like the rest of Florida and the South, suffered grievous economic losses during the …

Exploring Mentions Of Pornography In Popular Television Shows, A. Lucia Pollock Nov 2021

Exploring Mentions Of Pornography In Popular Television Shows, A. Lucia Pollock

Theses and Dissertations

While pornography has become highly accessible, another way in which pornography is present in media is through discussion in movies and television shows, which is often framed through casual reference, by way of a joke, or in a teasing manner. A content analysis of 55 episodes that reference pornography—looking specifically at the framing of pornography in individual scenes—provides valuable insight into the media ecosystem surrounding pornography and its potential impact on adolescents. Using cultivation analysis and framing theory as a theoretical basis, this study analyzes the inclusion of the terms, “porn,” “porno,” and “pornography” in popular television shows.

What Is Standard Tomorrow, May Not Have Been Today: An Argument For Claiming ScèNes À Faire, Logan Sandler Nov 2021

What Is Standard Tomorrow, May Not Have Been Today: An Argument For Claiming ScèNes À Faire, Logan Sandler

University of Miami Law Review

Recent lawsuits involving the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise and the Oscar award-winning movie The Shape of Water required courts to wrestle with the application of the decisive scènes à faire doctrine. In doing so, the Ninth Circuit exposed the doctrine’s chief pitfall: the lack of a temporal framework.
The modern scènes à faire doctrine limits the scope of what authors can claim as substantially similar by excluding the standard or stock elements in a given expressive work from copyright protection. Courts will often conclude that a contested element is scènes à faire if it can be demonstrated that …
