Learning To Teach In Mixed-Reality Simulated Virtual Environments At A Hispanic Serving Institution (Hsi), Veronica Lopez-Estrada, Carmen Pena, Denise Love
Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty at a Hispanic serving institution shifted from face-to-face to totally online teaching. The authors describe two assignments for teacher candidates that required them to design and deliver lessons that focused on practicing two high-leverage practices utilizing Mursion, a mixed-reality simulation (MRS) software and platform. MRS sessions were delivered through Zoom video conferencing and were delivered asynchronously. Benefits, challenges, and limitations of using MRS in conjunction with Zoom in online courses were identified and discussed. Detailed logistics for planning, preparing, and executing MRS effectively were provided. The authors describe implications for remote learning …
Utility Of The Pleth Variability Index In Predicting Anesthesia-Induced Hypotension Ingeriatric Patients, Ahmet Yüksek
Utility Of The Pleth Variability Index In Predicting Anesthesia-Induced Hypotension Ingeriatric Patients, Ahmet Yüksek
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Anesthesia-induced hypotension may have negative consequences in geriatric patients. Therefore, predicting hypotension remains an important topic for anesthesiologists. Pleth Variability Index (PVI) measurement provides information about the fluid status and vascular tonus of patients. In this study, the ability of the Pleth Variability Index to predict hypotension after general anesthesia induction was evaluated. Materials and methods: PVI values obtained from pulse oximetry were recorded, in addition to preoperative standard anesthesia monitoring. The correlation between the PVI value and mean arterial pressure (MAP), systolic arterial blood pressure (SAP) changes, and the power of PVI values to predict the incidence of …

Oxygen Reserve Index Guided Oxygen Titration In One Lung Ventilation With Low Freshgas Flow, Ayten Saraçoğlu, Esra Yamansavci Şi̇rzai̇, Bedretti̇n Yildizeli̇, Mustafa Yüksel, Zeynep Zuhal Aykaç
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Continuous oxygen reserve index (ORI) measurement with multiple wave pulse co-oximetry is a noninvasive measurement. The decrease in the ORI trend provides a prediction for the development of hypoxemia and provides information on hyperoxia. Our aim is to determine the effect of ORI-guided oxygen titration on hyperoxemia-mediated morbidity. Materials and methods: Consecutive 120 ASA I-III patients, 18-70 years of age, without severe obstruction or restriction, undergoing one lung ventilation (OLV), were included in the study. Patients were divided into 4 groups. Oxygen titration without ORI monitoring with low-flow anesthesia (1 L/min, Group 1, n = 25) and high-flow anesthesia …

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
Evidence-based practice integrates and supports the best interventions in clinical practice. However, a gap of about ten years may elapse between the production of evidence and integration of best practices in clinical settings. Some technologies, such as podcasting, have become increasingly popular and are emerging as an innovative teaching modality that can support knowledge acquisition and integration. This scoping study gathered and synthesized the information in the literature regarding the use of podcasts by occupational therapy clinicians and students as a means for teaching and learning evidence-based knowledge. A scoping study approach was used following the five stages defined by …

Harlots And Hooligans: The Representation Of Women In Hogarth’S Strolling Actresses Dressing In A Barn (1738), Hannah Arnold
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Licensing Act egregiously hindered the English theatrical community when it was placed into effect by King George II in 1737. Strolling actors were thereby forbidden to perform in new plays for profit, forcing acting troupes to disband. This act was widely protested throughout England at the time, most notably by artist William Hogarth in his etching titled Strolling Actresses Dressing in a Barn. This etching cleverly protests the Licensing Act as well as a myriad of quandaries that plagued 18th-century English society, namely, gender roles both on and off the stage. Yet, what exactly is the …

The Museum That Leaps Over The Physical Wall : Museum Practices In Japan Under The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mengfei Pan
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Under the pandemic COVID-19, museums around the world are facing unprecedented challenges. This paper focuses on the museums in Japan and traces their practices between around February 2020 and March 2021. It presents a timeline of changes in the museum scene with along the spread of the Virus in the country and the policies, particularly the declarations of “State of Emergency.” To open to the public, an inherent purpose of a museum, becomes questionable when physical gatherings are undesirable with higher risk of virus spread and it is more expensive to remain open with much less visitors. This paper offers …

Unmaking Masculine Determinacy : A Postmodern Challenge In Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Usa Padgate
Unmaking Masculine Determinacy : A Postmodern Challenge In Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, Usa Padgate
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Venus, a play written by Suzan-Lori Parks, employs unconventional theatrical approaches in retelling the history of a 19th-century freak show attraction. This study examines how the critique of gender bias and sexual manipulations in Venus is explored and projected in ways that can be described as postmodern. Through the subversion of conventional forms and language, the blending of fact and fiction, the pastiches of both low and high generic and linguistic presentations, the liberating of a marginalized voice, and the revision of the philosophical premises that subordinate the female to the male order, the play questions the masculine determinacy …
Survival And Sovereignty : Forces On The Rise In Aurelio Tolentino’S Novels, Loida L. Garcia
Survival And Sovereignty : Forces On The Rise In Aurelio Tolentino’S Novels, Loida L. Garcia
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Aurelio Tolentino (1869–1915) is best remembered as the first nationalist dramatist who was in and out of prison because of his mutinous writings. His five extant novels manifest the sociopolitical struggle of early 20th-century Filipinos from the worldview of a versatile author. Tolentino’s fiction from 1909 to 1914 unveils how the colonized adapted ingrained, rigid, and conventional Spanish influences to the liberal and materialistic scheme imposed by the United States. A sociohistorical approach was used to investigate Tolentino’s narratives, revealing a people with a pliant but firm character brought about by their four centuries of subjugation. The literary method used …

The VESPACE project aims to revive an evening of theatre at the Foire Saint-Germain in Paris in the 18th century, by recreating spaces, atmospheres and theatrical entertainment in virtual reality. The venues of this fair have disappeared without leaving any archaeological traces, so their digital reconstruction requires fusing many different sources, including the expertise of historians, as well as of historians of theatre and literature. In this article, we present how we have used video game creation tools to enable the use of virtual reality in three key research stages in the human sciences, and particularly, in history or archaeology: …

Roll Down Like Water: Photography, Social Movements, And Surveillance In Memphis, Tenneessee, Andrea Morales
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“There’s really no such thing as the ‘voiceless,’” Arundhati Roy said during a speech after earning her 2004 Sydney Peace Prize for literature. “There are only the deliberately silenced, or the preferably unheard.” These words help illuminate the tensions between dominant narrative and power, as well as photography’s role arbitrating both. This paper will explore those relationships and their impacts through existing documentary and sociological studies, but more pointedly will use the experience of making a body of work about social movements in Memphis, Tennessee. Over the last seven years, I’ve used critical race theory framework to make photographs rooting …
Mezcla, Liz Quinones
Mezcla, Liz Quinones
Dance (MFA) Theses
Modern-day colonialism negatively impacts marginalized Americans on a daily basis. Beyond the emotional detriments caused by microaggressions and stereotyping, systems of oppression create unequal access and opportunities for those who fall outside the margin of the “norm.”
Through the re-telling of her father’s migration story, researcher Liz Quinones uses personal narrative alongside scholarly research to expose the harmful impacts of white supremacy in America. Quinones investigates her own identity crisis and dissociation with Puerto Rican heritage that has been and continues to be white-washed by society. Using dance performance as a medium, Quinones creatively manifests her research while seeking reclamation …

Steps Last: A Pedagogy For Existing In The Vanishing Point, Cihtli Ocampo
Dance (MFA) Theses
In this thesis I will present Steps Last, a pedagogy for teaching flamenco to non-Spaniards rooted in the translation of the Andalusian methodology for transmitting flamenco from one generation to another. At the same time, I will examine how flamenco, at its essence, shatters the notion of the machine-body, freeing us to seek and exist within the “vanishing point” as a way of achieving permanence through ephemerality. First, I will present the history of the Steps Last pedagogy and explain how rhythm, singing, history and improvisation must be mastered in flamenco if one is to move comfortably within the form. …

Hospital-Acquired Condition Ranking Score Among Types Of Safety-Net Hospitals, Jude C. Iruka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services has been shifting from paying hospitals for the volume of services they delivered to paying them for the quality of those services, known as pay-for-performance, to incentivize hospitals to offer improved care at a lower cost. When a patient goes to the hospital to receive care for one condition and develops another condition during that hospital stay, the second condition is referred to as a hospital-acquired condition. It is anticipated that 1.7 million infections are acquired at some point in-hospital stay in the United States annually, resulting in nearly 100,000 deaths in …

Bharatanatyam: A Reflection Of The Past And Evolving Embodiment Of The Times, Tulsi Juhi
Dance Department Best Student Papers
This paper examines the art form of bharatanatyam, which is the pinnacle of Indian classical dance that brings together music, art, and movement through the lens of storytelling. With roots in ancient Sanskrit literature and a foundation in the devotional dancing of the dēvadāsis, bharatanatyam’s training methods, audiences, performance settings, gender norms, and dancers’ status is recontextualized throughout shifting historical contexts of colonialism and the post-colonial era. By showcasing bharatanatyam’s historical progression as both a mirror to past traditions and window into the future of endless possibility, this paper illuminates how this respected global art has developed through its far-reaching …
