Penguin Players Music Director Digital Binder, Nina P. Caliendo Dec 2021

Penguin Players Music Director Digital Binder, Nina P. Caliendo

Honors Capstones

I worked with the Penguin Players here at Northern Illinois University as their head music director this semester. Penguin Players is a group on campus that puts on a musical with adults with disabilities as the stars. These artists are paired one-on-one with a mentor (usually a special education major) who helps them to learn their lines, songs, and dances. During the show the mentors are on stage with the artists but take a back seat to let the artists step into the spotlight. My job for the show is to teach everyone the songs they perform throughout the show. …

Art As Contextualization: Using Visual Communication As Christian Missions In Native American And Alaskan Cultures, Hali Gehring Dec 2021

Art As Contextualization: Using Visual Communication As Christian Missions In Native American And Alaskan Cultures, Hali Gehring

Senior Honors Theses

Contextualization is an important aspect of Christian ministries and cross-cultural missions to create sustaining churches around the world. There are many forms of communication that use contextualization for religious purposes, such as theatre, story, art, and dance. These important forms of communication can be used with cultural practices to contextualize the Gospel to different people groups. For Native Americans and Alaskans, artistic works that promote cultural heritage are highly regarded. A beadwork piece that explains the Gospel could be a creative way to contextualize to Native American and Alaskans.

Cut From A Different Cloth: Middle-Class Women And The Chicago Men's Garment Workers' Strike Of 1910-1911, Cameron H. Simpson Dec 2021

Cut From A Different Cloth: Middle-Class Women And The Chicago Men's Garment Workers' Strike Of 1910-1911, Cameron H. Simpson

Honors Capstones

The Chicago men’s garment workers began a strike in late 1910 that extended through the winter into 1911 and began among women and people of immigrant backgrounds, only incorporating men once it picked up steam. The lack of uniformity among the striking workers led to a fragmented approach to the strike and eventually, middle-class women came to the aid of factory workers and took over organization of the strike. My thesis sheds light on how and why the women involved in this strike made their marks on Chicago labor history, both through their organizing and through their philanthropic work.

Enhancing Civic Engagement Through Leadership Education, Lori E. Kniffin, Sonalini Sapra Dec 2021

Enhancing Civic Engagement Through Leadership Education, Lori E. Kniffin, Sonalini Sapra

eJournal of Public Affairs

Many civic engagement courses require students to work with community members to make progress on complex problems, which in itself can be a practice of leadership. Yet there is little evidence that leadership development is strategically incorporated in civic engagement courses. Therefore, we taught eight leadership sessions over two semesters in the Principled Problem Solving Scholars Program at Guilford College. This study examines the perceived impact of leadership curriculum on the personal practices of leadership and the civic engagement for 14 undergraduate students. We present the findings through three themes highlighting (1) the shifts in the students’ philosophies of leadership …

Civic Engagement Through Theatre: Running A Brechtian Workshop In The Classroom, Margot Morgan Dec 2021

Civic Engagement Through Theatre: Running A Brechtian Workshop In The Classroom, Margot Morgan

eJournal of Public Affairs

This study presents an innovative active learning technique to support the development of civic education: a theatrical workshop based on the dramaturgy of Bertolt Brecht. I argue that the Brechtian workshop can develop three skills necessary for effective civic engagement: perspective taking, collaboration, and critical judgment/self-reflection, and that these skills are directly tied to the three civic values of pluralism, community, and civic responsibility. Using qualitative data gathered in the course of teaching this workshop to two distinct student populations — a self-selecting group of students in a liberal arts environment and a group of students at a commuter campus …

The Effects Of An Authentic Collaborative Project On University Directing Students’ Learning Experiences, Nur Hilyati Ramli, Safia Najwa Suhaimi, Muhammad Kamarul Kabilan

The Qualitative Report

This phenomenological study reports an authentic collaborative project between students of acting and directing (AD) and students of Teaching English as Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in University Sains Malaysia (USM). The project, which is integrated and infused with features of authentic learning and creative drama education, aims to provide the AD students with new learning experiences that are authentic in nature and that focuses on their abilities to direct a full theatre performance. Using qualitative data collection methods (i.e., online reflections and open-ended items), the study identified and determined six meaningful learning experiences that the 29 AD students gained: …

Custom, Law, And History: The Enduring Influence Of Florida's "Black Code", Jerrell H. Shofner Dec 2021

Custom, Law, And History: The Enduring Influence Of Florida's "Black Code", Jerrell H. Shofner

Florida Historical Quarterly

In October 1956, Dr. Deborah Coggins, health officer for Madison, Jefferson, and Taylor counties, sat down to lunch in Madison, Florida, with a public health nurse to discuss a matter of mutual official concern. Because of their busy schedules the lunch hour was the only mutually available time for the meeting. But since the doctor was white and the nurse black, the business luncheon led to the dismissal of the doctor by indignant commissioners of the three counties. Her “breach of social tradition” had been so serious, according to the commissioners, that it rendered her unfit to continue in the …

Race Relations And Florida Gubernatorial Politics Since The Brown Decision, David R. Colburn Dec 2021

Race Relations And Florida Gubernatorial Politics Since The Brown Decision, David R. Colburn

Florida Historical Quarterly

The United States Supreme Court, on May 17, 1954, delivered its famous Brown decision which forbade separate public school systems for black and white children. Reaction throughout most of the South was swift, and among public officials it ranged from hostility and bitterness to mild anger. Georgia’s Governor Herman Talmadge was perhaps the most outspoken in his opposition to the decree: “The United States Supreme Court by its decision today has reduced our Constitution to a mere scrap of paper.” Mississippi’s Senator James Eastland was scarcely less vitriolic: “The South will not abide by nor obey this legislative decision by …
