This is a comprehensive study reporting the fabrication of highly porous Gehlenite scaffold (Ca2Al2SiO7)—both with and without surface modification—for the first time. The sintering temperature of Gehlenite scaffolds was optimized. Next, the optimized Gehlenite scaffold was coated by polycaprolactone (PCL)-Forsterite (Mg2SiO4) nanocomposite to improve the scaffold’s brittleness and biological properties. 1375 °C was found to be the optimized sintering temperature by which the Gehlenite scaffold was consolidated. Different PCL and Forsterite concentrations were separately applied on the optimized scaffold to yield a complete nanocomposite coating without clogging the macroporous structure. …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Root fracture is a rarely seen traumatic injury in permanent dentition. It has a prevalence of 0.5-7 %. Tooth survival is significantly affected by the type of healing and the location of the root fracture. Additionally, the patient’s age, stage of root development, mobility and dislocation of the coronal fragment, and diastasis between fragments following this kind of injury are among the important factors. In this case presentation, the management with MTA plug and 6-year follow-up of a horizontal root fracture was reported. A literature update regarding the use of MTA in the management of horizontal root fractures was also …

Fourteen Tips For Cultivating Your Entrepreneurial Community, Charles A. French Jan 2021

Fourteen Tips For Cultivating Your Entrepreneurial Community, Charles A. French

UNH Cooperative Extension

An entrepreneurial community is a community that intentionally acts to cultivate and support entrepreneurs. Focusing on building business and economic development from within is a key alternative strategy to industrial recruitment, which seeks to draw enterprise from outside of the community. In fact, it has proven to be more effective at job creation in more rural places that do not have the infrastructure to draw business and industry.

Cyber Conflicts In Outer Space: Lessons From Scada Cybersecurity, Roy Balleste Jan 2021

Cyber Conflicts In Outer Space: Lessons From Scada Cybersecurity, Roy Balleste

Emory Business Law Review

The story of cybersecurity begins in land. By land, a cyber operations expert would mean the land mass on the surface of the Earth. The great monuments to human achievement surround our daily lives, every hour of every day. These testaments to human ingenuity are not the usual ones known to be appreciated as works of art. The monuments of concern for cybersecurity include, among others, power plants, electrical substations, water dams, water processing plants, auto assembly factories, and satellite ground stations. On January 10, 2014, Australia’s IT News reported that Russian researchers Sergey Gordeychik and Gleb Gritsai discovered vulnerabilities …

Rocks And Hard Places: Exploring Educational Psychologists’ Perspectives On ‘Off Rolling’ Or Illegal Exclusionary Practices In Mainstream Secondary Schools In England, E Done, Helen Knowler, Will Shield, Hannah Bayton

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Research being undertaken by the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth is exploring educational psychologists’ knowledge of, and perspectives on, exclusionary practices in schools in England, particularly illegal practices referred to as “off-rolling”. Preliminary findings from the survey element of a mixed methods research project are reported here. The role of business models in the provision of educational psychology services to schools is considered through the conceptual lens of Giroux, Agamben and Ball to highlight ambiguities around the client relationship and to recast individualised ethical dilemmas as systemic features that inhibit direct challenges to school practices relating to inclusion. It is …

The Ghent Altarpiece After World War Ii: Restitution, Restoration, And Redemption, Jenny Graham Jan 2021

The Ghent Altarpiece After World War Ii: Restitution, Restoration, And Redemption, Jenny Graham

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Few Old Master paintings possess as turbulent an object history as the Ghent altarpiece, now restored, since World War II, to the city’s cathedral for which it was made. While most accounts focus on the longue durée perspective, especially the work’s looting by Napoleon and Hitler, this article examines the altarpiece’s history following its return to Belgium in 1945. The altarpiece was subject to increased sensitivity at home after its wartime wanderings, and a major controversy ensued when the government backed a radical conservation project, which took place under the direction of Paul Coremans at the Royal Museum in Brussels …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

The COVID-19 pandemic created new challenges for children including access to education and limiting social and emotional connections to extended family, friends, and the community. Globally, opportunities for sharing children’s self-reported experiences during lockdown were limited. The primary aim of this project was to create an art-E-Book that reflects children’s experiences of life during the COVID-19 pandemic that could be shared with other children around the world. Secondly, we wanted to reflect on the consultation undertaken within the International Network of Child and Family Centered Care (INCFCC) using Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle framework. Children from around the world were invited …

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Despite widespread use, community-based physical activity prescription is controversial. Data limitations have resulted in a lack of clarity about what works, under what circumstances, and for whom, reflected in conservative policy recommendations. In this commentary we challenge a predominantly negative discourse, using contemporary research to highlight promising findings and “lessons learnt” for design, delivery, and evaluation. In doing so, we argue for the importance of a more nuanced approach to future commissioning and evaluation. Novelty: Amalgamating learning from multiple research teams to create recommendations for advancing physical activity prescription.

The Remote Assessment Of Parkinsonism Supporting The Ongoing Development Of Interventions In Gaucher Disease, Abigail Louise Higgins, Marco Toffoli, Stephen Mullin, Chiao Yin Lee, Sofia Koletsi, Micol Avenali, Fabio Blandini, Anthony H.V. Schapira

Peninsula Medical School

Mutations in GBA which are causative of Gaucher disease in their biallelic form, are the most common genetic risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD). The diagnosis of PD relies upon clinically defined motor features which appear after irreversible neurodegeneration. Prodromal symptoms of PD may provide a means to predict latent pathology, years before the onset of motor features. Previous work has reported prodromal features of PD in GBA mutation carriers, however this has been insufficiently sensitive to identify those that will develop PD. The Remote Assessment of Parkinsonism Supporting Ongoing Development of Interventions in Gaucher Disease (RAPSODI GD) study assesses …

Peninsula Medical School

Summary Smoking rates are higher for people who use mental health services, which contributes substantially to health inequalities. Smoking can lead to worse COVID-19 outcomes, yet it remains unclear whether smoking has changed for people who use mental health services. We examined smoking patterns in a large clinical cohort of people with severe mental illness, before and during the pandemic. We found high levels of nicotine dependence and heavier patterns of smoking. Although some people had reported quitting, it is likely that smoking inequalities have become further entrenched. Mental health services should seek to mitigate this modifiable risk and source …

Mild Cognitive Impairment: The Manchester Consensus, Ra Dunne, D Aarsland, Jt O’Brien, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Given considerable variation in diagnostic and therapeutic practice, there is a need for national guidance on the use of neuroimaging, fluid biomarkers, cognitive testing, follow-up and diagnostic terminology in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). MCI is a heterogenous clinical syndrome reflecting a change in cognitive function and deficits on neuropsychological testing but relatively intact activities of daily living. MCI is a risk state for further cognitive and functional decline with 5–15% of people developing dementia per year. However, ~50% remain stable at 5 years and in a minority, symptoms resolve over time. There is considerable debate about whether MCI is a …
