Theses
The decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States, along with its reasoning, influence the direction and scope of historical events. Through an analysis of landmark dissents from four of the worst Supreme Court decisions, Curtis’ dissent in Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), Harlan’s dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), Holmes’ dissent in Abrams v. United States (1919), and Murphy’s dissent in Korematsu v. United States (1944), we can take steps towards catalyzing its self repair by stepping away from digital echo chambers and engaging in legitimate dissent. The four cases marked turning points in the efforts to protect …
A Prototype High Power Dc-Dc Converter For Regulating Generator Output Voltage In A Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Alex Currie
A Prototype High Power Dc-Dc Converter For Regulating Generator Output Voltage In A Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Alex Currie
Theses
As fully electric and hybrid electric vehicles become more commonplace, a strong incentive for innovation in electric powertrain technology has been created. Though the instantaneous power available from an electric motor may appeal to consumers of powersports vehicles, this has been an area with relatively little advancement towards electric architectures. One primary concern of electrifying such a platform is the need for large battery packs that tend not to perform well in the harsh weather conditions often seen in powersports such as snowmobiling. As such, hybrid electric architectures may prove to be a successful middle ground between fossil fuels and …

My Two Bodies, Zahra Babaei
My Two Bodies, Zahra Babaei
Theses
My Two Bodies examines the intersection of visibility, memory, and gendered absence through photographic and material strategies. Engaging with censorship and instability of the image, it investigates how realities are shaped by what is seen, obscured, or erased. Referencing the gendered absence of women in Iranian visual culture, the project considers how censorship intensifies rather than eliminates visibility. Drawing from Jacques Derrida’s concept of hauntology, absence is approached not as a void but as an active presence that disrupts the surface of the image. Through processes such as collage, projection, and fabric-based image making, photographs are treated as tactile, mutable …

Jewish practices vary widely across denominations and individual communities, reflecting diverse cultural influences and interpretations of Jewish law and tradition. For transgender Jews, navigating the intersection of their gender identity and Jewish identity can be challenging, and individuals may struggle to find a community where all aspects of their identity are fully accepted. Studying their narratives and learning from their experiences is vital for understanding how to create spaces that support these intersectional identities.
The purpose of my research is to learn more about the experiences of transgender Jews and how individuals navigate the intersection of their gender identity and …
A Bishnoi Woman’S Odhani: Gendered Labor, Environmental Ethics, And Textile Traditions In Rajasthan, Nidhi Patel
A Bishnoi Woman’S Odhani: Gendered Labor, Environmental Ethics, And Textile Traditions In Rajasthan, Nidhi Patel
Department of Anthropology
This report examines an embroidered odhani (woman’s shawl) attributed to a Bishnoi artisan from Rajasthan, India. The odhani is housed in the May Weber Ethnographic Study Collection at Loyola University Chicago. Close analysis of technique and contextual evidence is used to reattribute the textile, which was originally mislabeled and situates it within the contexts of gendered labor and environmental ethics within the Bishnoi community. Utilizing the frameworks of materialist and eco-spiritual feminism, the report argues that the odhani functions as a site of ecological resistance, cultural transmission, and women’s embodied knowledge, as well as a garment.

Psychological stress changes both behaviour and metabolism to protect organisms. Adrenaline is an important driver of this response. Anxiety correlates with circulating free fatty acid levels and can be alleviated by a peripherally restricted β-blocker, suggesting a peripheral signal linking metabolism with behaviour. Here we show that adrenaline, the β3 agonist CL316,243 and acute restraint stress induce growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) secretion in white adipose tissue of mice. Genetic inhibition of adipose triglyceride lipase or genetic deletion of β-adrenergic receptors blocks β-adrenergic-induced increases in GDF15. Increases in circulating GDF15 require lipolysis-induced free fatty acid stimulation of M2-like macrophages within …

Vascular rings represent a heterogeneous set of aberrant great vessel anatomic configurations which can cause respiratory symptoms or dysphagia due to tracheal or oesophageal compression. These symptoms can be subtle and may present at varied ages. More recently, many have been identified in patients without symptoms, including fetal echocardiogram, resulting in a conundrum for practitioners when attempting to determine who will benefit from surgical correction. Here, we provide a review of vascular rings and a guide to the practitioner on when to consider additional imaging or referral. Additionally, we discuss the changing landscape regarding asymptomatic patients and fetal echocardiogram.
The Effects Doctrine: The Simple Answer To The Absurd Results Of Florida's Judicial Interpretation Of Law Enforcement Jurisdiction, Ian A. Wise
Barry Law Review
Imagine the impotence a police officer must feel when watching a dangerous driver coming toward them but being unable to protect the public from harm until that driver crosses the invisible line of a city boundary. Even though hundreds of millions of Americans take preventive measures every day, Florida courts prohibit local law enforcement from doing the same; handcuffing officers by holding they may not take official action the moment they cross over the boundary lines of their city or county.
A narrow set of prudential exceptions to this rule has been created, resulting in absurdly contradictory rulings. Imagine a …
