Real Time Adaptive Relay Settings For Microgrid Protection Verified Using Hardware In Loop, Aadam Harnekar
Real Time Adaptive Relay Settings For Microgrid Protection Verified Using Hardware In Loop, Aadam Harnekar
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Microgrids with penetration of renewables is imposing new challenges for system protection. Renewables are characterized with high source impedance which limit the short circuit current. The value of short-circuit current is limited due to converters used which limit the current to a maximum of 1.1 to 1.5 times maximum rated load current. This can result in faults during the islanded mode of microgrid to go unnoticed if the relay settings are not adapted to account for it. The presence of such uncleared faults in the microgrid can result in exposing it to overcurrent for a long time which can damage …
Experimental Evaluation And Simulation Of Torque Transmissibility Frequency Response Functions Of Vibration Isolators And Absorbers For Drivetrain Applications, Luke Jurmu

Four studies involving torsional vibration isolation performance of automotive drivetrain components, make up this dissertation. One study features a prototype planetary torsional vibration absorber, a unique device that targets low frequency torsion modes in automotive drivetrains. Two studies feature experiments on several torque converters, clutch locked and open, to validate models of the hardware. The last study details experiments on a centrifugal pendulum absorber in a torque converter, to characterize the viscous friction while submerged in automatic transmission fluid (ATF). The enclosed studies improve the state of the art of drivetrain vibration absorbers and isolators, by introducing a new vibration …
Mathematical Modeling And Numerical Simulation Of Heat Transfer From Isolated Objects, Esmaeil Dehdashti
Mathematical Modeling And Numerical Simulation Of Heat Transfer From Isolated Objects, Esmaeil Dehdashti
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
In the area of heat transfer, like other fields of science and engineering, full- and semi-analytical solutions of elementary problems are regarded as invaluable resources that can be used to identify relevant dimensionless parameters, to obtain basic insights into the phenomena under consideration, to quickly quantify the effects of key factors, and, ultimately, to pave the way for understanding more complex problems arising in practice. These solutions can also serve as excellent benchmarks for calibrating experimental setups and validating numerical techniques. In this dissertation, we theoretically study three classical heat transfer problems, with the ultimate goal of deriving analytical or …
Metagenomic Identification And Classification Of The Mercury-Methylating Gene Hgca In Response To Water Table And Plant Functional Group Manipulations In Peat Soil, Madeline Peterson
Metagenomic Identification And Classification Of The Mercury-Methylating Gene Hgca In Response To Water Table And Plant Functional Group Manipulations In Peat Soil, Madeline Peterson
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Methyl-mercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin that threatens the health of humans and wildlife alike. Climate warming threatens to shift regional precipitation and climate regimes in peatland environments, which could destabilize northern peatlands and accelerate both Hg release from soil and MeHg production. Peatlands are among the leading hotspots for MeHg, yet little is known about the community composition or functional relationship of mercury-methylating microbes in response to varying environmental conditions. The recognized mercury-methylating genes responsible for this activity are the obligatory gene pair hgcA and hgcB. Metagenomic data from the full-factorial peatland mesocosm experiment PEATcosm was obtained to …

Detecting Surface Interactions Via A Wearable Microphone To Improve Augmented Reality Text Entry, R. Habibi
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This thesis investigates whether we can detect and distinguish between surface interaction events such as tapping or swiping using a wearable mic from a surface. Also, what are the advantages of new text entry methods such as tapping with two fingers simultaneously to enter capital letters and punctuation? For this purpose, we conducted a remote study to collect audio and video of three different ways people might interact with a surface. We also built a CNN classifier to detect taps. Our results show that we can detect and distinguish between surface interaction events such as tap or swipe via a …
An Overview Of Converting Kabul’S Traffic Circles And Rotaries To Modern Roundabouts, Mohammad Anas Taeb
An Overview Of Converting Kabul’S Traffic Circles And Rotaries To Modern Roundabouts, Mohammad Anas Taeb
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Circular intersections, in the form of traffic circles and rotaries, were built around the world in the first half of the twentieth century. However, with the rise in traffic flow, regular traffic congestion and accidents forced authorities to look for alternative solutions and, in many cases, signalized intersections became the preferred alternative. In the 1960s, the UK introduced concept of modern roundabouts and a new set of priority rules for the circulating traffic. Since the inception of modern roundabouts, they have enhanced both operational and safety aspects at these locations, even when used to replace large traffic circles/rotaries, proving that …

The Extraction Of Waxes And Lipids From Sorghum Using Green And Renewable Solvents Followed By Conversion To Biofuels Using Gamma-Valerolactone Pretreatment, Marissa Gallmeyer
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Plant matter contains waxes and lipids that can be extracted and used or sold as a value-added product prior to conversion of the remaining plant material to biofuels. Wax and lipid extraction of plant materials is currently performed using volatile, non-renewable hydrocarbons, primarily hexane, which is produced from fossil fuels and can pose a health and safety hazard. The purpose of this study is to compare the amount and characteristics of waxes extracted by hexane with those extracted using organic solvents that are less toxic and can be produced from renewable sources.
Sorghum samples were extracted separately with hexane, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Reconstruction of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) is a fundamental aspect of genetic engineering and provides a deeper understanding of the biological processes of an organism. Two methods were implemented to reconstruct the gene regulatory networks of Arabidopsis thaliana under two treatments: methyl jasmonate (MeJa) and salicylic acid (SA). The Joint Reconstruction of multiple Gene Regulatory Networks (JRmGRN) method was utilized to construct a joint network for identifying hub genes common to both conditions in addition to networks specific to each condition. The Differential Network Analysis with False Discover Rate Control method constructed a network of connections unique to only one …
Elucidating Peatland Disturbance Ecology And Carbon Dynamics Through The Lens Of Soil Using Infrared Spectrometry, Dominic Uhelski
Elucidating Peatland Disturbance Ecology And Carbon Dynamics Through The Lens Of Soil Using Infrared Spectrometry, Dominic Uhelski
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
We sought to quantify the fire regimes of peatlands in the hemi-boreal zone of North America, and to understand the qualities of their peat. We used infrared spectrometry to accomplish both goals by gathering spectral information about the organic matter in each sample. We used a series of mixtures of natural peat and natural peat charcoal to isolate the spectral components associated with charcoal concentration. We built a multiple linear regression model which predicts the charcoal concentration in peat samples. We validated our data using nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. As a result, we can accurately predict the charcoal concentration of …
Developing Electromagnetic And Photonic Devices By Using Artificial Dielectric Materials, Saeid Jamilan
Developing Electromagnetic And Photonic Devices By Using Artificial Dielectric Materials, Saeid Jamilan
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Transformation-Optics (TO) is a new theoretical tool that allows for designing advanced electromagnetic and photonic devices. TO theory often prescribes material parameters for transformed media that cannot be found in nature. Metamaterials (MMs) were initially used for realization of TO-based devices. However, conventional MMs possess noticeable losses caused by their metallic parts that prevents their utilization in optical range. Alternatively, photonic crystals (PhCs) formed from arrays of low-loss all-dielectric elements can be good substitutes for building TO-prescribed devices. Metasurfaces (MSs) comprised from 2D arrays of dielectric resonators (DRs) have been found as other promising candidates for realizing flat and efficient …

‘Owing To The Backwardness Of The Season’: Assessing The Exploratory Mining Process On Isle Royale Redacted Version, Andrew Anklam
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Isle Royale, located in Lake Superior, was one center of the nation’s first copper rush. High quality copper veins drew mid-19th century miners looking to stake a claim. By the mid-1850s these initial attempts at lode mining failed as the remote location and logistical hurdles made extracting copper from Isle Royale a costly business. Despite the short-lived nature of these exploratory mines, they played a vital role in defining the nature and profitability of copper lodes in the Lake Superior Basin and serve as an example for how mineral rushes on the western frontier of North America play out. The …

Continuous myoelectric prediction of intended limb dynamics has the ability to provide transparent control of a prosthesis by the user. However, the impact on these models of adding a human user into the control loop is less clear. Here, the ability of a User Response Model (URM) to continuously predict EMG activity from gait kinematics and kinetics collected during three mobility tasks (level-ground walking, stair ascent, and stair descent) was examined. Multiple-input, multiple-output NARX-based URMs were developed with two outputs (ankle plantarflexor and dorsiflexor) and variable inputs (ankle kinetics, and shank and/or ankle kinematics). Accuracy in predicting the tibialis anterior …
Public Perception Of Adults With Adhd In The United States: Stigma Vs. Strengths, Peyton S. Barton
Public Perception Of Adults With Adhd In The United States: Stigma Vs. Strengths, Peyton S. Barton
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Stigma is a stereotyped judgement of a group of people (e.g. people with a mental illness; Goffman, 1963). Mentally ill individuals are often assumed to be dangerous, irresponsible, or incapable of taking care of themselves (Rüsch et al., 2005). The type of judgement and the level to which individuals are judged is influenced by the sociodemographic factors of the observer as well as the stigmatized individual (Martin et al., 2007). Additionally, in some cases people judge those with mental illness as having strengths; for example, believing people with bipolar disorder to be particularly creative (Galvez et al., 2011; Kiume, 2017). …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Much is changing in K-12 education contexts, including an emphasis on performativity and accountability (Au, 2016; Connell, 2009). Against this backdrop, teacher burnout and attrition have been the focus of numerous studies, including examination of organizational structures and factors contributing to burnout (Buckley et al., 2005; Konu et al., 2010). Insufficient attention has been given to how teachers are able to navigate the demands of this profession (Matteucci et al., 2017; Wilcox & Lawson, 2018). Efforts to retain teachers should not only emphasize factors associated with burnout or attrition, but also how they are affected by the systems in place, …
