Introduction: Using 70% isopropyl alcohol for skin preparation before intradermal (ID), subcutaneous (SC), and intramuscular (IM) vaccinations/injections is a routine practice for all Thai medical personnel, yet there is no direct evidence it reduces infections. Many studies, including the WHO best practices for injections and related procedures toolkit 2010, state cleaning dirty skin with soap and water is sufficient. This study assessed the percentage of medical personnel familiar with this toolkit and their skin preparation attitudes and knowledge. WHO injection practices information was discussed. Patients and their relatives’ opinions were collected. Two cross-sectional questionnaires in 400 medical and 400 non-medical …

Introduction: Feeding problems are commonly observed in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Among feeding problems, food selectivity is the most common issue. Improper feeding behaviors could lead to health issues and difficulties in parenting. The objective of this research is to compare eating problems among preschool-age children with autism and children with typical development (TD).
Methods: This case-control study was conducted in 30 children with ASD and 30 age- and gendermatched children with TD. Parents of children from both groups answered demographic questionnaires, the Brief Autism Mealtime Behavior Inventory (BAMBI) and questionnaires about attitude and strategies toward their child’s …

Introduction: Lom-Am-Ma-Preuk (LAP) remedy is a herbal remedy in Traditional Thai Medicine scripture and is on the National List of Essential Medicine in Thailand. Many herbal ingredients of LAP have significant inhibitory activity against the production of inflammatory mediators. The aim of this current study was to investigate forced degradation of extracts by heat, moisture, oxidation, and acid hydrolysis. The effects of these degradations were determined by anti-inflammatory activity and chemical content analysis of the LAP extract. The identified chemical markers including eugenol, myristicin, and piperine were compared amongst the remedies.
Methods: Antiinflammatory activity was determined by an inhibitory effect …

Introduction: To investigate the prevalence of incidental findings which were suspected as rhinosinusitis on computed tomography (CT) imaging of the brain and identify if there are any clinical correlations between CT abnormalities and patients’symptoms.
Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study of total 104 subjects who underwent CT brain for non-paranasal sinus related conditions. The CT findings were analyzed based on the Lund-Mackay scores by two blinded reviewers and the patients were divided into two groups according to their Lund-Mackay scores to compare differences between patients’ symptoms. The 22-question Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) was completed if chronic rhinosinusitis symptoms were suggested. …

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Introduction: Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) has improved survival for renal replacement therapy in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in Thai patients. The benefit of CAPD in ESRD patients has been demonstrated in medical and quality of life. Nevertheless, the data of risk factors associated with CAPD mortality is dismal. Thus, this study aims to identify the factors associated with mortality of ESRD patients treated by CAPD modality.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study enrolled ESRD patients who had received CAPD in a general hospital in Nakhon Nayok, Thailand. Medical records including clinical characteristics, laboratory, and mortality outcomes were reviewed …

Objectives: Both stress and hypertension (HTN) are considered major health problems that negatively impact the cerebral vasculature. In this article we summarize the possible relationship between stress and HTN. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature using a database search of MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Results: Psychological stress is known to be an important risk factor for essential hypertension. Acute stress can induce transient elevations of blood pressure in the context of the fight-or-flight response. With increased intensity and duration of a perceived harmful event, the normal physiological response is altered, resulting in a failure …

Introduction: Keloids are benign fibrous proliferative tissues resulting from pathological wound healing process. Auricular keloids are the challenging problem to cope with due to their resistanceto various modalities of treatment and having a high recurrence rate. There are no standard protocols for the treatment of ear keloids in the present practice. The purpose of this study is to introduce and evaluate the effectiveness of the practical treatment protocol for treating auricular keloids by using the modified surgical technique called “Through-and-Through excision technique” and postoperative intralesional TriamcinoloneAcetonide (TA) injection as an adjuvant therapy.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed all patients who present …

Introduction: Antibiotic resistant bacteria are being considered a serious public health challenge. Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, developed to replace previously resistant antimicrobials. The use of natural products as an antimicrobial drug is an alternative way to reduce bacterial resistance by synthesized drugs and enhance their efficacy. Yahom-Navakot (YN) is a Thai remedy in the Thai essential drug list. The indications for YN treatment are to relieve fatigue, dizziness, malaise, and vomiting after alleviation of fever. Previous studies have reported antibiotic enhancing effects of YN. This study was aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activities of levofloxacin and Yahom-Navakot Remedy Extract. …

The period from November 3, 2020 to January 20, 2021, was unlike any presidential transition in our history. President Donald Trump refused to accept his ballot-box defeat, instead battling to overturn the election’s outcome. This dramatic public campaign was waged in state and federal courts, state legislatures, the offices of state and local election officials, the Department of Justice, and finally the halls of Congress, where on January 6, 2021, a mob incited by the President stormed the Capitol with the explicit goal of preventing the final counting of electoral votes for Joe Biden. These efforts had more mundane and …

Scale Model Equations And Optimization For Annular Flow Of Non-Newtonian Fluids Between Eccentric And Rotating Cylinders, Wei Zhang, Pooya Khodaparast, Amin Mehrabian Dr., Amir Shojaei
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
A broad range of engineering applications involves helical flow of non-Newtonian fluids between two eccentric cylinders. These applications often require estimation of the frictional pressure losses along the axes of the cylinders. Laboratory flow loops are commonly used to study the flow characteristics at smaller scales of investigation. This study uses the laws of similarity and dimensional analysis to obtain a set of scaling equations between the laboratory and prototype scales of the described annular flow. These equations are derived for four types of fluid rheology including Newtonian, power-law, Bingham-plastic, and yield power-law.
Results are expressed through a set of …

Evaluation Of A Number Of Grass Species For Restoring Degraded Semi-Arid Rangelands In Southern Africa, K. Kellner, S. De Wet
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The biophysical environment is an important determinant of land degradation in both commercial and communal land tenure systems in South Africa. According to a recent study on the status of land degradation, approximately 25% of the total land cover in South Africa is degraded. Several technologies exist to restore the soil and vegetation degraded areas in natural pastures. To improve the production and biodiversity potential for agricultural and conservation uses in these rangelands, a common restoration technology includes the cultivation the eroded and compacted soil surfaces by rip- ploughing and the re-vegetation with high productive, palatable and perennial species. Five …

Codeine phosphate is a mild to moderate analgesic and has a weak cough suppressant activity that is available to purchase as an over the counter (OTC) painkiller in Ireland as a compound product. In recent years, countries such as Australia have introduced laws that prohibit the sale of the drug without a valid prescription. This move by Australia begs the question as to why this legislation was introduced and should Ireland follow suit.
The primary aims of the study were to determine knowledge among the general public of codeine-containing medications and their usage levels. The survey also investigated whether current …
