When The Dark Shadow Of Virtual Reality Intrudes Into The Real World : A Study Of Ursula Poznanski’S Young Adult Novel, Erebos, Siriporn Sriwarakan
Journal of Letters
This paper studies Ursula Poznanski’s Erebos (2010), a German young adult novel, in terms of the concerns it raises about the dangers of and solutions to computer game addiction among young adults. The novel shows the dominance of the computer game “Erebos,” which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to process the interests and desires of its players. These players are shown attaching themselves to their virtual selves so much that they deny their real-world selves, and are then manipulated by the Erebos AI to commit acts of violence. On the other hand, the novel reveals that such obsession can be solved …

Out Of Our Depth With Deep Fakes: How The Law Fails Victims Of Deep Fake Nonconsensual Pornography, Kate Kobriger, Janet Zhang, Andrew Quijano, Joyce Guo
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
People have used deep fake technology to generate nonconsensual pornography (NCP) since at least 2017. With technological advances, deep fakes are increasingly easy to create and difficult to identify. This article explores the dearth of both technological and legal recourse for victims of deep fake NCP. It first reviews existing technical solutions for detecting deep fakes, finding that successful deep fake classifiers are often only successful for a short while. As soon as computer scientists publish their work, others build on their discoveries to beat the classification mechanism. Deep fake technology is now so advanced that classification technologies cannot reliably …
The Ios 14.5 Update: A Game Changer In Federal Privacy Law, Chris Jones
The Ios 14.5 Update: A Game Changer In Federal Privacy Law, Chris Jones
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
From 1890, when the right to privacy was defined, to the 1973 debut of the Fair Information Practice Principles that set the “Gold Standard” for consumer privacy protection, to the FTC’s request for a federal privacy law in 2000, the core expectations of privacy have remained the same. United States consumers have a right to privacy that requires notice and consent for the use of their personal information. The Apple iOS 14.5 update introduced App Tracking Transparency, providing consumers with the opportunity to affirmatively opt in or decline the tracking and sharing of their personal information. This update has shown …

Human Driver Simulation Model, Chen Haojun
Human Driver Simulation Model, Chen Haojun
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
As part of the vehicle environmental certification process, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires automobile manufacturers to run a series of “drive cycle” tests to evaluate the efficiency of a vehicle (miles/gallon for internal combustion engine vehicles or Wh/mile for electric vehicles). For these tests, the dynamometer must be controlled by a human driver. The goal of this project is to create a simulation model of a human driver performing an automobile speed control task using MATLAB and Simulink. This model mimics human control tendencies and error as closely as possible by tuning parameter values to best-fit experimental data. Outputs …

The presence and stability of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on graphitic electrodes is vital to the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the formation and evolution of SEI remain the least understood area in LIBs due to its dynamic nature, complexity in chemical composition, heterogeneity in morphology, as well as lack of reliable in situ/operando techniques for accurate characterization. In addition, chemical composition and morphology of SEI are not only affected by the choice of electrolyte, but also by the nature of the electrode surface. While introduction of defects into graphitic electrodes has promoted their electrochemical properties, how such structural …
The Utilization Of Enzymes And Enzyme Products For Antimicrobial Effects, Brandon Edward Burdette
The Utilization Of Enzymes And Enzyme Products For Antimicrobial Effects, Brandon Edward Burdette
Theses and Dissertations
Bacterial resistance is outpacing the discovery of novel antimicrobials. Therefore, it is essential to look at antimicrobials using novel methods. MTAN is a crucial enzyme for some bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori. Transition state analog inhibitor design and fragment-based drug design are drug design approaches typically used independently, but combining these techniques yields inhibitors that bind tightly and are effective in pM concentrations. We demonstrate the efficacy of the combined techniques by investigating the inhibition of HpMTAN, which is an essential enzyme. Enzyme byproducts can also be effective for causing bacterial cell death, hydrolyzing GsdmD by caspases-1/4/5/11 results in an …
Trajectory Optimization For Connected And Autonomous Vehicle Platooning And Split Operations: Modeling And Experiments, Qianwen Li
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Emerging connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) platoon technology holds great potential in improving mobility, enhancing riding comfort, reducing fuel consumption, and mitigating congestion. It reduces car-following gaps via cyber connections. Further, it smooths vehicle trajectories via automated control. Smoothed trajectories and improved aerodynamic efficiency from reduced car-following gaps improve fuel and space efficiency, thus improving traffic performance.
Motivated by such promising advantages, this dissertation investigates trajectory optimization for two basic CAV platoon operations, i.e., platooning and split, which are the premise to implement this technology to benefit society. Two two-stage optimization problems are formulated to solve the platooning and split …

Multilingual Voice Support For Contact Center Agents, Ananth Hegde, Amit Agnihotri, Nivedha Thangaraju
Defensive Publications Series
In a contact center, when a caller elects to speak to an agent the call will be routed (based on the language that the caller chose) to an agent who can speak the language that was selected by the caller. A global company with operations or offices in many different countries faces the challenge of communicating in multiple languages, something that is a key to providing excellent customer service. In particular, it can be challenging for a company to achieve such a capability when they simply cannot hire a customer support agent for every possible language. To address such challenges, …

The Scientific Journal of Vehicles and Roads
Based on the analysis of statistical data on the state of transformer angular displacement transducers, the following calculations of probabilistic reliability indicators were performed: failure rate, mean time to failure; the probability of failure-free operation with a sufficiently long operation and gamma-percentage resource; confidence upper and lower bounds are determined, under the chosen conditions of significance, the calculated values satisfy Pearson's χ^2 criterion and therefore do not contradict the experimental data. By analyzing the selected levels of significance, the existence of exponential and normal laws in the laws of probability distribution was revealed.

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research
Over the past 100 years, the Saudi dwelling has undergone a series of transformations in its form, design, and function. These evolutions were the result of economic, regulatory, intellectual, and many other influences (Bahammam, 2018). During COVID-19 lockdown, people had to live a new lifestyle, practiced learning and working remotely, and had to stay longer hours at home and keep social distance apart. Daily prayers and outdoor leisure were only limited to the confines of the household. Residents had to consider preventive health precautions such as the use of sterilizing tools and allowing for natural ventilation and daylight.

Degradation of photographic images is a common phenomenon that can occur due to several reasons. Astronomical images may be degraded due to atmospheric factors or telescope optics. Photographs taken using standard digital cameras may be blurred due to lack of focus, due to motion of the subject, due to low resolution, or due to camera shake during relatively long exposures. Often one wishes to correct for the effect of such degradation and recover the original image, and this has been a long-standing research problem in digital imaging. Effective solutions depend critically on the context of the problem and the type …
