A Trifling Affair: Loomis Lyman Langdon And The Third Seminole War, Patricia R. Wickman Dec 2021

A Trifling Affair: Loomis Lyman Langdon And The Third Seminole War, Patricia R. Wickman

Florida Historical Quarterly

When, in 1899, Colonel Loomis Lyman Langdon, United States Army, Retired, penned the ironic statement which referred to “A Trifling Affair,” he did so, at least, from the vantage point of forty years of active military service to his country. His had been a long and eventful carrer and, particularly as regards Florida history, one might even say that Colonel Langdon was a man who had been in all the “right” places at all the “right” times.

Master James Cook And Gulf Coast Cartography, Robert R. Rea Dec 2021

Master James Cook And Gulf Coast Cartography, Robert R. Rea

Florida Historical Quarterly

The acquisition by Great Britain of Florida and cis-Mississippi Louisiana in 1763 brought with it both the need and the opportunity for a significant expansion of cartographic knowledge of the shores of the newly-created colonies of East and West Florida. Spanish and French charts of the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico were rather more artistic than scientific; indeed, the tools for exact surveying had yet to be developed when the Union Jack was raised at St. Augustine, Pensacola, and Mobile. Fishermen from Havana and the occasional merchant engaged in the coasting trade might know the safe anchorages and …

Military Duty In Antebellum Florida: The Experiences Of John Henry Winder, Arch Fredric Blakey

Florida Historical Quarterly

Two Catholic priests escorted and partially carried a dying man to the gallows at the Old Capital Prison in Washington, D.C. The condemned man was Heinrich Hartmann Wirz. Branded by his executioners as the “beast of Andersonville prison,” he was hanged on November 10, 1865. He had been found guilty of conspiring to murder Union prisoners and was executed as a war criminal, the only such casualty of the Civil War.

Francis's Metallic Lifeboats And The Third Seminole War, George E. Buker Dec 2021

Francis's Metallic Lifeboats And The Third Seminole War, George E. Buker

Florida Historical Quarterly

Because Joseph Francis was a good, persistent salesman and General Thomas S. Jesup was knowledgeable about Florida and its Seminole Indians, the United States Army became interested in metallic lifeboats. By December 20, 1855, when Chief Billy Bowlegs’s warriors attacked Lieutenant George Hartsuff’s men in the Big Cypress Swamp, some of Francis’s metallic lifeboats already were in Florida waters. Thus, during the Third Seminole War, the army, for the first time, used metal boats in combat operations.

General Joseph B. Wall And Lynch Law In Tampa, Robert P. Ingalls Dec 2021

General Joseph B. Wall And Lynch Law In Tampa, Robert P. Ingalls

Florida Historical Quarterly

On Monday morning, March 6, 1882, the news spread quickly through Tampa, a normally sleepy community of some 1,000 people. During the previous night a man had broken into the home of a prominent family living just outside town. After stealing several small items, the intruder had assaulted a young woman of the family. According to subsequent press reports, the attacker had fled before actually raping the victim, but clues to his identity, including a knife left at the scene, put Sheriff D. Isaac Craft and a posse on his trail the following morning. With Tampans gripped by feelings of …

Citric Acid/Β-Alanine Carbon Dots As A Novel Tool For Delivery Of Plasmid Dna Into E. Coli Cells, Anju Pandey, Asmita Devkota, Anil Sigdel, Zeinab Yadegari, C. Korsi Dumenyo, Ali Taheri

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Successful delivery of plasmid DNA into the microbial cells is fundamental in recombinant DNA technology. Natural bacterial transformation is limited to only certain species due in part to the repulsive forces between negatively charged DNA and bacterial membranes. Most common method of DNA delivery into bacteria is artificial transformation through heat shock and electroporation. These methods require sophisticated instruments and tedious steps in preparation of competent cells. Transformation by conjugation is also not applicable to all plasmids. Nanoparticles have been used successfully in therapeutics for drug delivery into animal cells. They are starting to gain popularity in plant sciences as …

Replication Data For: Experimental And Numerical Study Of Evaporation From Wavy Surfaces By Coupling Free Flow And Porous Media Flow, Bo Gao, Kathleen Smits Dec 2021

Replication Data For: Experimental And Numerical Study Of Evaporation From Wavy Surfaces By Coupling Free Flow And Porous Media Flow, Bo Gao, Kathleen Smits

Earth & Environmental Sciences Datasets - Archive

The macroscale roughness of the soil surface has significant influences on the mass/energy interactions between the subsurface and the atmosphere during evaporation. However, most previous works only consider evaporation behavior from flat surfaces. Based on experimental and numerical approaches, the goal of this work is to provide a framework for the understanding of the mechanisms of evaporation from irregular soil surfaces at representative elementary volume scale. A coupling free flow-porous media flow model was developed to describe evaporation under nonisothermal conditions. For simplicity, sinusoidal-type wavy surfaces were considered. To validate this modeling approach, an experiment using an open-ended wind tunnel …

Replication Data For: Evaporation From Undulating Soil Surfaces Under Turbulent Airflow Through Numerical And Experimental Approaches, Bo Gao, Kathleen Smits, John Farnsworth

Earth & Environmental Sciences Datasets - Archive

Evaporation from undulating soil surfaces is rarely studied due to limited modeling theory and inadequate experimental data linking dynamic soil and atmospheric interactions. The goal of this paper is to provide exploratory insights into evaporation behavior from undulating soil surfaces under turbulent conditions through numerical and experimental approaches. A previously developed and verified coupled free flow and porous media flow model was extended by incorporating turbulent airflow through Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. The model explicitly describes the relevant physical processes and the key properties in the free flow, porous media, and at the interface, allowing for the analysis of coupled exchange …

Replication Data For: Effect Of Varying Atmospheric Conditions On Methane Boundary-Layer Development In A Free Flow Domain Interfaced With A Porous Media Domain, C. T.K.K. Deepagoda, Kathleen Smits Dec 2021

Replication Data For: Effect Of Varying Atmospheric Conditions On Methane Boundary-Layer Development In A Free Flow Domain Interfaced With A Porous Media Domain, C. T.K.K. Deepagoda, Kathleen Smits

Earth & Environmental Sciences Datasets - Archive

Mitigation of atmospheric emission of methane from leaky underground infrastructure is important for controlling the global anthropogenic greenhouse gas burden. Overexposure to methane may also cause occupational health problems in indoor/outdoor environments at the local scale. Subsurface soil conditions (e.g. soil heterogeneity) affect methane migration in soils while near-surface atmospheric boundary conditions (e.g. wind and temperature) affect off-site emissions across the soil-atmosphere interface. This study investigated the above-surface methane concentration boundary-layer development under different soil conditions (homogenous and layered) and atmospheric boundary controls (wind and temperature). A series of controlled bench-scale experiments was conducted using an open-loop boundary-layer wind tunnel …

Replication Data For: Thermal Conductivity Of Binary Sand Mixtures Evaluated Through Full Water Content Range, Benjamin Wallen, Kathleen Smits Dec 2021

Replication Data For: Thermal Conductivity Of Binary Sand Mixtures Evaluated Through Full Water Content Range, Benjamin Wallen, Kathleen Smits

Earth & Environmental Sciences Datasets - Archive

A soil's grain-size distribution affects its physical and hydraulic properties; however, little is known about its effect on soil thermal properties. To better understand how grain-size distribution affects soil thermal properties, specifically the effective thermal conductivity, a set of laboratory experiments was performed using binary mixtures of two uniform sands tightly packed with seven different mixing fractions over the full range of saturation. For each binary mixture, the effective thermal conductivity, λ, capillary pressure, hc, and volumetric water content, θ, were measured. Results demonstrated that the λ–θ relationship exhibited distinct characteristics based on the percentage of fine- and coarse-grained sands. …
