Safety Department Officers' Perceptions: Concealed Carry And The Imposed Risk On Campus, Alaina R. Adkins-Armstrong
Safety Department Officers' Perceptions: Concealed Carry And The Imposed Risk On Campus, Alaina R. Adkins-Armstrong
Doctor of Education (EdD)
A small number of studies have explored community college safety officers’ perceptions regarding concealed carry on campuses. This understudied topic demands attention as the number of concealed handgun permits increased nationally for the third year in a row (Crime Prevention Research Center, 2021). Data suggests that within the 34 states that require a concealed carry permit, the number of Americans carrying stands at 18.66 million, a 304% increase since 2007 (Crime Prevention Research Center, 2021). As a result of recent state legislation and court decisions, ten states have provisions allowing for concealed carry on public campuses of higher education: Arkansas, …

Assessing The Efficacy Of Bacteriological Analytical Manual (Bam) Enrichment Broths For Detection Of Salmonella Spp. In Meat Analogs, Georgia Sampson
Food Science (MS) Theses
Plant-based meat alternatives are gaining popularity as the number of market options increases. However, the recent appearance of these products on the market post-dates the validation of the current approach for isolating Salmonella from meat analogs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of the currently used Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) pre-enrichment broth (lactose broth) with two additional broths (universal pre-enrichment broth and buffered peptone water) for the detection of Salmonella in five plant-based burger products. Each burger product was spiked with a Salmonella serotype (S. Enteritidis or S. Agona) that has previously been linked …
The Impact Of Processing On The Content And Composition Of Bovine Milk Extracellular Vesicles, Anna Colella
The Impact Of Processing On The Content And Composition Of Bovine Milk Extracellular Vesicles, Anna Colella
Food Science (MS) Theses
Bovine milk (BM)-based formula is an alternative for many newborns who do not consume human milk. BM contains extracellular vesicles (EVs), bioactive compounds involved in intercellular communication which regulate critical developmental processes in early life. It was hypothesized that the industrial processing of raw BM affected the content and composition of BM EVs. It is critical to understand how industrial processing affects EVs in BM since changes in the content and composition may attenuate the functions of these bioactive compounds in human health. EVs from raw BM were isolated and characterized in accordance with the Minimal Information for Studies of …

Using Free And Open Source Software To Teach University Gis Courses Online: Lessons Learned During A Pandemic, Sterling Quinn
Geography Faculty Scholarship
During the remote learning necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, university GIS students did not always have home access to the kinds of software and hardware that they would ordinarily get in their on-campus lab facilities. In this situation, the free and cross-platform nature of FOSS opened the door for some students to continue their GIS education uninterrupted. In this article, I describe how one university allowed students to choose FOSS such as QGIS, PostGIS, and GeoDa as alternatives to proprietary software in upper-division GIS coursework. These were used to teach techniques such as point pattern analysis, visibility analysis, hydrological modeling, …
Learning-Based Modeling Of Weather And Climate Events Related To El Niño Phenomenon Via Differentiable Programming And Empirical Decompositions, Justin Le
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This dissertation is the accumulation of the application of adaptive, empirical learning-based methods in the study and characterization of the El Niño Southern Oscillation. In specific, it focuses on ENSO’s effects on rainfall and drought conditions in two major regions shown to be linked through the strength of the dependence of their climate on ENSO: 1) the southern Pacific Coast of the United States and 2) the Nile River Basin. In these cases, drought and rainfall are tied to deep economic and social factors within the region. The principal aim of this dissertation is to establish, with scientific rigor, an …

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) increasingly penetrates all aspects of society, many obstacles emerge. This thesis identifies and discusses the issues facing Computer Vision and significant deficiencies in the Software Development Life-cycle that need to be resolved to facilitate the evolution toward true artificial intelligence. We explicitly review the concepts behind Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models, the benchmark for computer vision. Chapter 2 highlights the mechanisms that have popularized CNNs while also specifying significant gaps that could garner the model inadequate for future use in safety-critical systems. We put forward two main limitations. Namely, CNNs do not use lack of information …

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US. Understanding the mechanisms of CRC progression is essential to improve treatment. Mitochondria is the powerhouse for healthy cells. However, in tumor cells, less energy is produced by the mitochondria and metabolic reprogramming is an early hallmark of cancer. The metabolic differences between normal and cancer cells are being interrogated to uncover new therapeutic approaches. Mitochondria targeting PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1) is a key regulator of mitophagy, the selective elimination of damaged mitochondria by autophagy. Defective mitophagy is increasingly associated with various diseases including CRC. However, a …

Adhesive properties of leukemia cells shape the degree of organ infiltration and the extent of leukocytosis. CD44 and the integrin VLA-4, a CD49d/CD29 heterodimer, are important factors of progenitor cell adhesion in bone marrow (BM). Here, we report their cooperation in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) by a novel non-classical CD44-mediated way of inside-out VLA-4 activation. In primary AML BM samples from patients and the OCI-AML3 cell line, CD44 engagement by hyaluronan induced inside-out activation of VLA-4 resulting in enhanced leukemia cell adhesion on VCAM-1. This was independent from VLA-4 affinity regulation but based on ligand-induced integrin clustering on the cell …
Rapid Isolation And Quantification Of Exosome And Lentivirus By Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography On A Polyester Capillary-Channeled Polymer Fiber Stationary Phase, Sisi Huang
All Dissertations
Exosomes are vesicles secreted by cells having a size range from 30-150 nm and carrying genetic materials that are important for intercellular functions. Besides, mounting evidence suggests that tumor cells secrete more exosomes than normal cells making it important to quantify exosomes as well. Thus, it is important to be able to efficiently isolate and quantify exosomes for potential use in clinical diagnostics, as well as to develop a deeper understanding of their role in intercellular processes. Apart from exosomes, Lentivirus is another bioparticle that has drawn great attention from researchers. Lentivirus is a genus of retroviruses with a size …

Why, contrary to theoretical predictions, do marine microbe communities harbor tremendous phenotypic heterogeneity? How can so many marine microbe species competing in the same niche coexist? We discovered a unifying explanation for both phenomena by investigating a non-cooperative game that interpolates between individual-level competitions and species-level outcomes. We identified all equilibrium strategies of the game. These strategies represent the probability distribution of competitive abilities (e.g. traits) and are characterized by maximal phenotypic heterogeneity. They are also neutral towards each other in the sense that an unlimited number of species can co-exist while competing according to the equilibrium strategies. Whereas prior …

Designing Reactive Oxygen Species Producing Materials For Cancer And Wastewater Treatments, Nil Kanatha Pandey
Designing Reactive Oxygen Species Producing Materials For Cancer And Wastewater Treatments, Nil Kanatha Pandey
Physics Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation is focused on using nanotechnology to improve conventional photodynamic therapy (PDT) and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for cancer and wastewater treatments, respectively. Even though PDT has a great potential for cancer treatment, the insufficient penetration depth of the external light source and hypoxic nature of the tumor microenvironment severely hinder PDT’s applications in clinical settings. Fortunately, microwaves (MWs) offer a potential opportunity to overcome these limitations. In the first part of the dissertation, a facile synthesis method of copper-cysteamine (Cu-Cy) nanoparticles is discussed, and their reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and cancer cell killing performances upon MW exposure …

Teaching Students How To Code Qualitative Data: An Experiential Activity Sequence For Training Novice Educational Researchers, Jennifer E. Lineback
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
Coursework on qualitative research methods is common in many collegiate departments, including psychology, nursing, sociology, and education. Instructors for these courses must identify meaningful activities to support their students’ learning of the domain. This paper presents the components of an experiential activity sequence centered on coding and coding scheme development. Each of the three component activities of this sequence is elaborated, as are the students’ experiences during their participation in the activities. Additionally, the issues concerning coding and coding scheme development that typically emerge from students’ participation in these activities are discussed. Results from implementations of both in-person (face-to-face) and …

In 1948 a collection of ten football (soccer) teams from across Colombia joined together to form the División Mayor (Major League) the culmination of a thirty-year-long process to form a national league. Colombian sports enthusiasts were not motivated by their love of the game, but rather saw football, and sports in general, as a means to modernize their country. Journalists and enthusiasts wrote that the practice of sport, as part of physical education programs or participating in the spectacle of a match were essential to the “modern man” and “modern women.” Colombian nationalists also embraced sport, and a national league, …

Tuning The Solubility, Cellular-Uptake And Activity Of Microtubule Stabilizing Ruthenium Polypyridyl Complexes, Melissa Marie Reardon
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
Many Ru(II) Polypyridyl Complexes (RPCs) are being investigated as they show potent cytotoxicity and acceptable toleration in animals. Some of these RPCs are thought to target DNA and/or mitochondria in cells. Recently, [Ru(dip)3]2+ (dip= 4,7-diphenylphenanthroline) with cytotoxicity ranging from 1-4 µM, has shown to target microtubules (MTs) and exhibit strong microtubule stabilizing activity (MSA). Determination of [Ru(dip)3]2+:MT stoichiometry was difficult due to poor solubility. Therefore, to study this new metallo-organic target, a less lipophilic RPC is needed to enhance solubility, while still achieving cytotoxicity. The purpose of this thesis is to test the following hypothesis. We postulate that by systematically …

Given the fact that Saudi women with DM have more obesity but lower levels of physical activity compared to men, and have additional cultural barriers to physical activity, new interventions are needed. Home-based interventions would be ideal as the women would not need to rely on transportation to a gymnasium or park for exercise. Although, home-based interventions are relatively low-cost, for both the patient and the healthcare system, no studies were found in which researchers tested an exercise intervention in Saudi women with DM delivered at home using the Internet. The purpose of this proposed study will be to evaluate …

Wi-Fi-Based Indoor Localization Using Model-Based And Data-Driven Approaches, Ayoub Idelhaj
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
This thesis investigates model-based and data-driven approaches for indoor localization using the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) of Wi-Fi signals. We study multiple model-based indoor localization approaches, including the free space path loss model, the log-distance path loss model, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) model, and a nonlinear regression model. We examine their indoor localization accuracy using raw RSSI values, and filter RSSI values passed through a Moving Average filter and a Kalman filter. For data driven approaches, we employ a family of Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) algorithms including Basic-ELM, Online Sequential-ELM (OS-ELM), Hierarchical-ELM (H-ELM), and Kernel-ELM (K-ELM), to find …

Microbiomes play essential roles in the health and function of animal and plant hosts and drive nutrient cycling across ecosystems. Integrating novel trait-based approaches with ecological theory can facilitate the prediction of microbial functional traits important for ecosystem functioning and health. In particular, the yield-acquisition-stress (Y-A-S) framework considers dominant microbial life history strategies across gradients of resource availability and stress. However, microbiomes are dynamic, and spatial and temporal shifts in taxonomic and trait composition can affect ecosystem functions. We posit that extending the Y-A-S framework to microbiomes during succession and across biogeographic gradients can lead to generalizable rules for how …

Cow mature weight (MWT) is heritable and affects the costs and efficiency of a breeding operation. Cow weight is also influenced by the environment, and the relationship between the size and profitability of a cow varies depending on production system. Producers, therefore, need tools to incorporate MWT in their selection of cattle breeds and herd replacements. The objective of this study was to estimate breed and heterotic effects for MWT using weight-age data on crossbred cows. Cow's MWT at 6 yr was predicted from the estimated parameter values-asymptotic weight and maturation constant (k)-from the fit of the Brody function to …

The generation of neural stem and progenitor cells following injury is critical for the function of the central nervous system, but the molecular mechanisms modulating this response remain largely unknown. We have previously identified the G protein-coupled receptor 37 (GPR37) as a modulator of ischemic damage in a mouse model of stroke. Here we demonstrate that GPR37 functions as a critical negative regulator of progenitor cell dynamics and gliosis following ischemic injury. In the central nervous system, GPR37 is enriched in mature oligodendrocytes, but following injury we have found that its expression is dramatically increased within a population of Sox2-positive …

The Role Of Video Game Play, Gender Roles, And Career Decision Self-Efficacy In Development Of Stem Career Interests & Motivation, Michael Saunders
Doctoral Dissertations
The gender wage gap, disadvantaging working women, continues to grow despite progress toward women’s rights and occupational equity. With the world economy prioritizing growth in technological industries, the underrepresentation of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields perpetuates systemic gender inequity. Further, given traditional social gender roles, women and girls may be less likely than boys and men to pursue STEM careers. Though specialized programs seek to grow the number of girls and young women engaged in STEM-related education and prepare them for the growing demand for STEM laborers, these programs are regional, seasonal, and not widely available …

Non-perennial streams are widespread, critical to ecosystems and society, and the subject of ongoing policy debate. Prior large-scale research on stream intermittency has been based on long-term averages, generally using annually aggregated data to characterize a highly variable process. As a result, it is not well understood if, how, or why the hydrology of non-perennial streams is changing. Here, we investigate trends and drivers of three intermittency signatures that describe the duration, timing, and dry-down period of stream intermittency across the continental United States (CONUS). Half of gages exhibited a significant trend through time in at least one of the …
