Neutrophil Myeloperoxidase Derived Chlorolipid Production During Bacteria Exposure, Kaushalya Amunugama, Grant R. Kolar, David A. Ford Aug 2021

Neutrophil Myeloperoxidase Derived Chlorolipid Production During Bacteria Exposure, Kaushalya Amunugama, Grant R. Kolar, David A. Ford

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Neutrophils are the most abundant white blood cells recruited to the sites of infection and inflammation. During neutrophil activation, myeloperoxidase (MPO) is released and converts hydrogen peroxide to hypochlorous acid (HOCl). HOCl reacts with plasmalogen phospholipids to liberate 2-chlorofatty aldehyde (2-ClFALD), which is metabolized to 2-chlorofatty acid (2-ClFA). 2-ClFA and 2-ClFALD are linked with inflammatory diseases and induce endothelial dysfunction, neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis) and neutrophil chemotaxis. Here we examine the neutrophil-derived chlorolipid production in the presence of pathogenic E. coli strain CFT073 and non-pathogenic E. coli strain JM109. Neutrophils cocultured with CFT073 E. coli strain and JM109 E. …

Status Of Vitamin D In Children With Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (Pans), Gabriel Delgado '22 Aug 2021

Status Of Vitamin D In Children With Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (Pans), Gabriel Delgado '22

2021 Intern Reports

Numerous studies from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) have proven that there is an association between autoimmunity regulation and Vitamin D deficiency. Consequently, it has been theorized that improvement of Vitamin D levels will also help moderate autoimmunity levels. However, there are not many studies, if any, on the regulation of the PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) autoimmune disease by Vitamin D in child patients. Over a 7 month period, measurement data of 122 total patients with PANDAS, including vitamin D 25-hydroxy level, gender, and age of diagnosis, were collected from the MASA (Midwest …

The aim of this paper was to examine the most effective risk factor management strategies to control and prevent hypertension. The studies reviewed indicate that there are various risk factor management …

Occupational Factors And Risk For Preterm Birth, Kelsey Forbes Aug 2021

Occupational Factors And Risk For Preterm Birth, Kelsey Forbes

Theses and Graduate Projects

Introduction: Preterm birth (PTB) is a leading contributor to infant death globally and in the United States. The biological mechanisms and etiologies for PTB are not well understood making prevention challenging. The correlation between increased number of women in the workforce and increased incidence of PTB in the U.S. inspired a thorough review of occupational risk factors that may contribute to shortened gestational length.

Background: The studies reviewed assessed the following occupational factors and their association with PTB: physical job demands, exposure to whole-body vibration and noise, shift work, long working hours, and psychosocial job strain.

Methods: A systematic search …

Guiding Change: A Multidisciplinary Framework For Interventions Addressing Systemic Racism In Healthcare, Lavette D. King Aug 2021

Guiding Change: A Multidisciplinary Framework For Interventions Addressing Systemic Racism In Healthcare, Lavette D. King

Master's Projects and Capstones

The relationship between systemic and institutional racism in the U.S., and health outcomes in people of the African Diaspora have been well documented (Bailey et al., 2017). Distrust in the healthcare system is the result of generational trauma compounded by an ongoing issue that has yet to be fully addressed (Scharff et al., 2015). For decades people of African descent have expressed concern about negative experiences with the U.S. healthcare system. Often the encounters leave them feeling, mistreated, unheard and or criminalized. These feelings result in trepidation over using the healthcare system which often further compounds health issues (Washington, 2008). …

Trauma Characteristics Moderate The Relation Between Estradiol And Trauma-Related Symptoms, Jenna K Rieder, Olena Kleshchova, Mariann R Weierich

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

Women are more likely to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than men, and fluctuations in gonadal hormones might contribute to this vulnerability. Low-estradiol states are associated with aversive affective experiences, including trauma-related symptoms. However, the impact of trauma characteristics on the relation between estradiol and trauma-related symptoms is unknown. We used a clinical interview and 10-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) that spanned low- and high-estradiol menstrual cycle phases to test trauma type, chronicity, and timing as moderators of the association between estradiol and trauma-related symptoms in 40 naturally cycling young women. We tested interactions between trauma characteristics and (a) estradiol …

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Epitranscriptomic mechanisms linking tRNA function and the brain proteome to cognition and complex behaviors are not well described. Here, we report bi-directional changes in depression-related behaviors after genetic disruption of neuronal tRNA cytosine methylation, including conditional ablation and transgene-derived overexpression of Nsun2 in the mouse prefrontal cortex (PFC). Neuronal Nsun2-deficiency was associated with a decrease in tRNA m5C levels, resulting in deficits in expression of 70% of tRNAGly isodecoders. Altogether, 1488/5820 proteins changed upon neuronal Nsun2-deficiency, in conjunction with glycine codon-specific defects in translational efficiencies. Loss of Gly-rich proteins critical for glutamatergic neurotransmission was associated with impaired …

Psychology Faculty Research

Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) have been disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS health disparities. Research showed that resilience to HIV/AIDS is associated with increased use of relevant health services, lower sexual health risks, and improved mental health outcomes among racially and ethnically diverse gbMSM. As the subpopulation that has historically been impacted by HIV/AIDS the longest, older gbMSM living with HIV/AIDS have inarguably exhibited resilience to HIV/AIDS the most. The qualitative study described in this paper sought to identify and examine protective factors that fostered resilience to HIV/AIDS …

Total daily energy expenditure (“total expenditure”) reflects daily energy needs and is a critical variable in human health and physiology, but its trajectory over the life course is poorly studied. We analyzed a large, diverse database of total expenditure measured by the doubly labeled water method for males and females aged 8 days to 95 years. Total expenditure increased with fat-free mass in a power-law manner, with four distinct life stages. Fat-free mass-adjusted expenditure accelerates rapidly in neonates to ~50% above adult values at ~1 year; declines slowly to adult levels by ~20 years; remains stable in adulthood (20 to …

Assessment Of The Effects Of Airflow Conditions Related To Hop Drying, David Mabie Aug 2021

Assessment Of The Effects Of Airflow Conditions Related To Hop Drying, David Mabie

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Hops have been utilized by brewers for centuries to contribute bitterness, antimicrobial preservation and desirable aromatic profiles to beer. The hop cone is a small, lightweight, high moisture content flower which produces lupulin glands containing resins and essential oils that contribute desirable characteristics to beer. Due to the high harvest moisture content (75% wet basis), hops must be rapidly dried to properly preserve them for future processing and brewing. While hops have been dried for centuries, most literature from the past century has focused on drying to minimizing loss to the resin or physical cone structure. The objectives of this …

Microbes are ubiquitous in nature, and they play vital roles in various processes associated with metabolism in the human body, photosynthesis in plants, or decomposition of waste in the environment. Hence, it is essential to understand how the composition of microbial communities affects the ecosystem of different environments ranging from ocean floors to hot springs to the human body. Microbial communities present in different human body sites are of particular importance due to their implications in the cause and prevention of human diseases. The traditional approaches limit microbial research to exclusively studying species that can be successfully cultured in the …

Proof Of Concept: The Use Of Renal Biomarkers In Critically Ill Pediatric Patients For Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Christopher Lee Shaffer Aug 2021

Proof Of Concept: The Use Of Renal Biomarkers In Critically Ill Pediatric Patients For Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Christopher Lee Shaffer

Theses & Dissertations

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious and common complication in critically ill pediatric patients. The incidence of pediatric AKI continues to increase, especially in patients who undergo surgical correction of congenital heart defects. Serum creatinine and urine output are the most commonly used tools to assess renal function, with international guidelines standardizing AKI-definitions based upon these parameters. However, changes in serum creatinine can occur 24 hours or later after a renal insult event, delaying the diagnosis and potential interventions to reverse injury. It is critical to identify endogenous renal biomarkers within the pediatric population that are both timely and …
