Allelopathy Of Panicum Maximum Jacq. Cultivars On Tree And Shrub Forage Legumes: Greenhouse Estimate, A. R. P. Almeida, T. J. D. Rodrigues
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The available information about allelopathic effects of the genus Panicum on tropical forage legumes is scarce and inconclusive. Based on this fact this research was carried out, under greenhouse conditions to evaluate potential allelopathic effects of aqueous extracts (0,10 and 20%) of three cultivars of Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Mombaça, cv. Aruana and cv. Tanzânia-1 on three forage legumes, Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. (leucaena), Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. cv. Kaki (pigeon pea) and Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr. (sesbania) seeking for mixed grasses and legumes pastures. The following characteristics were evaluated: emergence porcentage, speed of germination index, root density, dry …

Tillage Systems In The Establishment Of Pastures In Argentinian Subhumid Area, H. Pagliaricci, C. Saroff, A. Ohanian, T. Pereyra
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The effect of three tillage systems on the number of plants produced and forage production of a pasture the first year of establishment was assessed in this experiment. The components of the pasture were alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Shreb), orchard grass (Dactilys glomerata L), and prairie grass (Bromus unioloides). Treatments were three tillage systems: conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT), and direct sowing (DS). Sowing was performed with (NI) and without fertilizers (N0) in each treatment. A split-plot experimental design with two repetitions was used, with tillage being the main factor …

Correlation Between Yield Of Forage Legumes In Grass Mixtures And Accumulation Of Soil Mineral Nitrogen In Sweden, Magnus A. Halling, David Scholefield
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Soil mineral N and DM yield of five forage legume species were investigated in field experiments at two sites in Sweden, established 1997. The species studied were: red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), white clover (Trifolium repens L.), galega (Galega orientalis Lam.) and lotus (Lotus corniculatus L.), all grown in grass-legume mixed swards. No nitrogen was applied to the legumes. Results from two years of ley (1998 and 1999) are presented. Correlation was found between accumulated mineral N in the soil in the autumn and the total seasonal DM yield of the …
The Liability Of Health Care Providers To Third Parties Injured By A Patient, Samuel D. Hodge Jr.
The Liability Of Health Care Providers To Third Parties Injured By A Patient, Samuel D. Hodge Jr.
Pace Law Review
Duty of care is a critical component of any negligence claim necessary to establish liability. It is well recognized at common law that a physician owes a duty to advise a patient but is not mandated to take affirmative measures outside the physician-patient relationship to protect a third-party. Health care providers may also be responsible for oversight, or the failure to safeguard a patient, due to a special relationship they undertake, such as failing to properly diagnose or recommend an appropriate treatment plan. Recently, the courts have struggled over whether public policy and fairness require the expansion of the law …
The United States Climate Change Policies And Covid-19: Poisoning The Cure, Carolina Arlota
The United States Climate Change Policies And Covid-19: Poisoning The Cure, Carolina Arlota
Pace Law Review
Climate change is complex during the best of times. It is commonly conceptualized as the quintessential global collective action problem: it affects those who do not contribute to it while the benefits of climate change mitigation measures are not restricted to those who pursue such measures. This conceptualization illustrates the high transaction costs involved in domestic policies as well as in international agreements addressing climate change, and it is of academic and practical interest. As such, this Article discusses the current challenges that climate change policies face, focusing on the linkages between the climate change policies of the Trump administration …

Patterns Of Torso Morphology In Extant Quadrupedal Amniotes And Their Paleontological Applications, Myles M.A. Walsh
Patterns Of Torso Morphology In Extant Quadrupedal Amniotes And Their Paleontological Applications, Myles M.A. Walsh
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between form and function is an overarching theme in the field of biology. Specifically, body size and shape are important factors when considering the biology of an organism. This study examined the torso morphology of a diverse set of 124 extant terrestrial and semi-aquatic amniote taxa using a novel approach to construct approximated torso shape groupings. My study shows the presence of 10 distinct torso shapes within the examined amniotes, and these torso shape groupings were used to evaluate hypotheses associated with diet and limb bone length as well as explore potential evolutionary patterns. Herbivores had a more …

Reef-building corals thriving in extreme thermal environments may provide genetic variation that can assist the evolution of populations to rapid climate warming. However, the feasibility and scale of genetic improvements remain untested despite ongoing population declines from recurrent thermal stress events. Here, we show that corals from the hottest reefs in the world transfer sufficient heat tolerance to a naïve population sufficient to withstand end-of-century warming projections. Heat survival increased up to 84% when naïve mothers were selectively bred with fathers from the hottest reefs because of strong heritable genetic effects. We identified genomic loci associated with tolerance variation that …

Spider silk has outstanding mechanical properties, rivaling some of the best materials on the planet. Biochemical analyses of tubuliform silk have led to the identification of TuSp1, egg case protein 1, and egg case protein 2. TuSp1 belongs to the spidroin superfamily, containing a non-repetitive N-and C-terminal domain and internal block repeats. ECP1 and ECP2, which lack internal block repeats and sequence similarities to the highly conserved N-and C-terminal domains of spidroins, have cysteine-rich N-terminal domains. In this study, we performed an in-depth proteomic analysis of tubuliform glands, spinning dope, and egg sacs, which led to the identification of a …

Anthraquinone Extraction And Quantification, Modification Of The Pictet-Spengler Reaction For The Creation Of Useful Isotopes And Use In Protein Ligation, Jermell Williams
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The Pictet-Spengler reaction rates of three species known to exhibit the alpha effect will be compared to the rate of the amine functional group. This is part of a larger effort to to generate a bifunctional tool for protein ligation by attaching an alkyne or azide group to the amine. With this, the aldehyde tag method can be used to modify proteins in biological conditions cheaply, specifically, and efficiently.
Investigating The Co-Evolution Of Individual And Network-Level Recovery Capital: A Dynamic Social Network Analysis Testing Network Cohesion And Exchange Theories, Mayra Guerrero
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Historically, treatment professionals, researchers, and policymakers widely regarded substance use disorders (SUDs) as acute conditions that patients could “recover” from after a single treatment. Recent efforts have redefined recovery as a lifelong, dynamic process that involves improvements in multiple domains over time. Thus, recovery capital frameworks and theory have gained momentum as a way to operationalize recovery from SUDs. Recovery capital is a multifaceted framework with theoretical underpinnings in the social capital literature that provides a way of conceptualizing and measuring the complexities of the recovery process. While the literature on recovery capital has grown significantly since its conception, the …
Measuring Allostatic Load In An Urban Adolescent Sample: The Profile And Role Of Biomarker Dysregulation In Depression Outcomes, Heather Marshall
Measuring Allostatic Load In An Urban Adolescent Sample: The Profile And Role Of Biomarker Dysregulation In Depression Outcomes, Heather Marshall
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Accumulated, chronic stress exposure is well established as a precursor for allostatic load (AL). Both stress exposure and AL have been associated with depression in the existing literature. While many studies have focused on biomarkers representative of various physiological systems, a clear understanding of how physiological AL results in depression is yet unclear. Further, variability of hypo- and hypercortisolemic profiles have been associated with depression. A review of the existing literature supports hypocortisolemic profiles in relation to female depression and hypercortisolemic profiles in male depression across both adolescent and adult populations. The function of alpha-amylase (AA) dysregulation within the context …
Exploring The Effects Of Smoking Cessation Interventions For Asians And Asian Americans: A Meta-Analytic Review, Amber T. Pham
Exploring The Effects Of Smoking Cessation Interventions For Asians And Asian Americans: A Meta-Analytic Review, Amber T. Pham
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Cigarette smoking continues to be a leading health problem in the United States and worldwide. Despite high prevalence rates among some subpopulations of Asians and Asian Americans, little attention has been focused on identifying effective smoking cessation interventions for this group. A meta-analysis examining effect sizes was conducted to test the hypothesis that smoking cessation interventions, overall, improve quit outcomes among Asians and Asian Americans. Factors associated with intervention effectiveness were explored through moderator analyses. Results show that overall, smoking cessation interventions are efficacious for Asians and Asian Americans (OR = 2.33). Moderator analyses revealed high intensity treatments and treatments …
Prenatal Stress & Socioemotional Outcomes In School-Aged Children: A Meta-Analytic Review, Michelle Anne Gilchrist
Prenatal Stress & Socioemotional Outcomes In School-Aged Children: A Meta-Analytic Review, Michelle Anne Gilchrist
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Prenatal stress has been linked to a myriad of adverse obstetric, infant, and childhood outcomes. Several prospective studies have linked maternal stress and distress during pregnancy with long-term neurocognitive, behavioral, and emotional consequences for the offspring, including decreased cognitive abilities as well as symptoms of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depression, and anxiety. However, limited conclusions on the influence of type of stressors and the magnitude of the effect of prenatal stress on specific developmental trajectories can be drawn due to variation in study design and measured outcomes. This meta-analysis synthesized the state of the current literature and quantified the effects …
Parent And Child Language Profiles And Their Family And Clinical Predictors, Jesus Eduardo Solano-Martinez
Parent And Child Language Profiles And Their Family And Clinical Predictors, Jesus Eduardo Solano-Martinez
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
A large number of households in the United States include linguistic minority and immigrant parents. These include parents of Latinx backgrounds and their children who have varying levels of English and Spanish proficiency. Research is needed to examine the nature of parent-child language proficiency patterns and differences and their links to family processes and mental health. To address this gap, a sample of 294 Latinx parent-child dyads of predominantly low-income and immigrant backgrounds were interviewed and reported their English and Spanish language proficiency levels. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) uncovered four parent-child language profiles including three in which there was a …
Phylogenomics And Population History Of Cichlid And Live-Bearing Fish Species In Lowland Neotropical Rivers, Konrad Taube
Phylogenomics And Population History Of Cichlid And Live-Bearing Fish Species In Lowland Neotropical Rivers, Konrad Taube
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Within Middle America, cichlids and poeciliids account for more than half of the fish biodiversity. This richness in fish fauna highlights the complexity of Middle American biogeography: no other continental area on earth contains within its range the unparalleled abundance of secondary freshwater fish species (fish that can tolerate both saltwater and freshwater). Research into the biogeography of widely distributed Middle American freshwater fish is essential to understanding this unique region.
Three species of freshwater fishes (Belonesox belizanus – Pike killifish, Vieja maculicauda – Black belt cichlid, and Gambusia nicaraguensis – Nicaraguan mosquitofish) are widely distributed across rivers on …
Electrochemical Studies Of Organic And Organometallic Compounds In The Pursuit Of Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction, Joshua J. Ludtke
Electrochemical Studies Of Organic And Organometallic Compounds In The Pursuit Of Electrocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction, Joshua J. Ludtke
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Carbon dioxide is the main contributor to the greenhouse effect in the world today; developing renewable energy sources and addressing anthropogenic CO2 release into the atmosphere are two key ways of addressing its increasing impact. Electrocatalytic reduction to products like methanol or carbon monoxide is one useful path to address the rapid increase of carbon dioxide, and the fac-M(bpy-R)(CO)3X family of complexes (M = Mn or Re; bpy-R = substituted 2,2’-bipyridine; X = Cl, Br, etc.) is one class of effective CO2 reduction catalysts. Although the capability of the rhenium complex Re(PyBimH)(CO)3Cl (PyBimH …

Cocaine, Cocaethylene And Ethanol In Postmortem Blood Submitted To The New York City Office Of Chief Medical Examiner, Jada T. Alexis
Student Theses
Cocaine overdose deaths are on the rise in the United States. This increase may be due to the co-consumption of cocaine with other drugs. When cocaine is ingested in conjunction with alcohol, a specific metabolite called cocaethylene forms. Information regarding cocaethylene, specifically its interpretive value in post-mortem cases, has not been widely studied. Data from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City revealed that there were 195 cases in 2017 positive for cocaethylene. These cases were most likely to involve black (42.1%) males (79.5%) in Manhattan (28.2%) aged 50 - 59 (34.4%). Most of the cases …

The results indicated that: a) the root tolerance …
Tail-Anchored Protein Insertion Under Er Stress Conditions: Calcium Is Key, Matthew Jordan, Malaiyalam Mariappan
Tail-Anchored Protein Insertion Under Er Stress Conditions: Calcium Is Key, Matthew Jordan, Malaiyalam Mariappan
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Tail-anchored (TA) membrane proteins are critical for protein translocation, intracellular trafficking, and programmed cell death. TA proteins contain hydrophobic transmembrane domains and traverse through the cytosol to post-translationally insert into cellular membranes. It is unclear how this post-translational insertion is affected by Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress. Here, we find that TA protein insertion is significantly reduced with ER stress inducer thapsigargin (Tg), a calcium pump inhibitor that blocks the import of calcium into the ER causing ER stress, but not when treated with other ER stress inducers. Interestingly, out data suggests that increased calcium in the cytosol may decrease TA …
Turning Science Fiction Into Reality: Enhanced Motor Learning For Prosthetic Limbs, Makayla Conley
Turning Science Fiction Into Reality: Enhanced Motor Learning For Prosthetic Limbs, Makayla Conley
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
In science fiction, prosthetic limbs appear as seamless extensions of the human body that function as if the limbs were made of flesh and bone. With recent technological and scientific advancements, the prosthetic limbs of today are beginning to resemble those we once only imagined. Patients are now able to perform simple, everyday tasks like drinking from a glass of water. However, there are many limitations to this technology, including lack of fine motor movement, absence of reflexes, and missing sensory feedback from the prosthetic limb. These restrictions prohibit prosthetics patients from having the same experience as someone with a …
The Morality Of Pronoun Flexibility: Connections Between Language And Cognitive Identity Alignment, Mafalda Von Alvensleben
The Morality Of Pronoun Flexibility: Connections Between Language And Cognitive Identity Alignment, Mafalda Von Alvensleben
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The power of words we use to refer to one another is gaining recognition in contemporary socio-political discourse. Yet, interplay between language and complex cognitive processes, including moral judgments and identity formation, largely remains a subject of philosophical and theoretical debate. In order to begin examining the existence of such interactions empirically, this paper investigates the syntactic shift of the third person plural pronoun they/them to the third person singular, used to refer to gender non-binary/gender nonconforming individuals. Using grammaticality acceptance ratings and the Worthen 2016 moral attitudes test, administered under timed pressure, this study measures both intuitions surrounding the …

Recognising The Pitfalls Of The Past: Community Health Workers In The Time Of Covid-19, Sam Brakarsh
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
Since their formal inception in the 1960s, Community Health Worker (CHW) programs have been revered as a panacea by some and critiqued as a delusion by others (R. N. Labonte et al., 2017; R. Labonte & Saunders, 2015). CHW programs can yield up to a 10:1 return on investment, mobilising communities to take preventative actions to tackle some of the most overwhelming diseases of our time (Earth Institute at Columbia University, 2013; WHO, 2015). However, when carried out without appropriate support or integration into broader health systems, CHW programs cease to be comprehensive tools for resilient preventative health and, instead, …

Returning To The Gender Gap In College Major: How Much Can Pre- College Skills Explain?, Nathalie Beauchamps
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The gender wage gap in the United States is a well-known phenomenon and researchers across many disciplines have tried to pinpoint its cause. One popular explanation is the gender gap in college major choice; however, it is still unknown why women tend to major in so-called soft sciences and men in hard sciences. This paper builds upon Speer (2017)’s work studying the gender gap in major choice as explained by test scores. Rather than utilizing OLS regressions, I employ a Kitagawa-Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition method, which also shows how unspecified discrimination works for or against women (or men) in how much their …
