The Effects Of Political Ideology And Brand Familiarity On Conspicuous Consumption Of Fashion Products, Ganga S. Urumutta Hewage, Sona Klucarova, Laura Boman
Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications
From the lens of conspicuous consumption, this research examines the interactive effect of brand logo size and political ideology on consumers’ intentions toward fashion products. Specifically, in a series of four studies, we address how consumer political ideology influences intentions toward items displaying smaller, inconspicuous logos versus larger, conspicuous logos for unfamiliar and familiar brands. We show that liberal consumers are more likely to prefer a large (rather than small) logo when a brand is unfamiliar. We suggest that liberals’ greater desire for product uniqueness elevates their risk propensity, which in turn increases preference for conspicuous consumption when familiarity with …

Designers and engineers are developing proposals for physical projects to adapt coastal sites to future sea level rise related threats. This puts pressure on local and regional decision makers to develop strategic frameworks for prioritizing, permitting and funding such projects. However, no systematic evaluation tools exist for the full range of these innovative designs. We build on the literature to develop an evaluation framework that synthesizes two different approaches to categorize these proposals and provide insight for coastal managers and decision makers. We apply this framework to physical projects that address sea level rise in their design around the San …

Genome-wide association studies reveal many non-coding variants associated with complex traits. However, model organism studies largely remain as an untapped resource for unveiling the effector genes of non-coding variants. We develop INFIMA, Integrative Fine-Mapping, to pinpoint causal SNPs for diversity outbred (DO) mice eQTL by integrating founder mice multi-omics data including ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, footprinting, and in silico mutation analysis. We demonstrate INFIMA's superior performance compared to alternatives with human and mouse chromatin conformation capture datasets. We apply INFIMA to identify novel effector genes for GWAS variants associated with diabetes. The results of the application are available at http://www.statlab.wisc.edu/shiny/INFIMA/ .

Cross-Frequency Coupling Explains The Preference For Simple Ratios In Rhythmic Behaviour And The Relative Stability Across Non-Synchronous Patterns, Dobromir Dotov, Laurel Trainor
Journal Articles
Rhythms are important for understanding coordinated behaviours in ecological systems. The repetitive nature of rhythms affords prediction, planning of movements and coordination of processes within and between individuals. A major challenge is to understand complex forms of coordination when they differ from complete synchronization. By expressing phase as ratio of a cycle, we adapted levels of the Farey tree as a metric of complexity mapped to the range between in-phase and anti-phase synchronization. In a bimanual tapping task, this revealed an increase of variability with ratio complexity, a range of hidden and unstable yet measurable modes, and a rank-frequency scaling …

Gum Arabic-Capped Silver Nanoparticles For Electrochemical Amplification Sensing Of Methylene Blue In River Water, Ziad Khalifa, Moustafa Zahran, Magdy Zahran, Magdi Abdelazzem
Chemical Engineering
Herein, a novel electrochemical amplification sensor is developed for detecting methylene blue (MB) us- ing gum Arabic-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for the first time. Gum Arabic-AgNPs were fabricated via a direct chemical reduction technique using silver nitrate as an AgNPs precursor and gum Arabic as a reducing and capping agent. They were characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotom- etry, square wave voltammetry (SWV), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). UV–Vis and SWV results show the characteristic absorption and electrochemical oxidation peaks of the AgNPs at 431 nm and 0.18 V, respectively. Additionally, TEM images of the AgNPs show that they are spherical …

The intestinal microbiota generates many different metabolites which are critical for the regulation of host signaling pathways. In fact, a wide-range of diseases are associated with increased levels of local or systemic microbe-derived metabolites. In contrast, certain bacterial metabolites, such as tryptophan metabolites, are known to contribute to both local and systemic homeostasis. Chronic alcohol consumption is accompanied by alterations to intestinal microbial communities, and their functional capacities. However, little is known about the role of alcohol-associated dysbiosis on host defense against bacterial pneumonia. Our previous work using fecal transplantation demonstrated that alcohol-associated intestinal dysbiosis, independent of ethanol consumption, increased …

A well-documented phenomenon among social insects is that brain changes occur prior to or at the onset of certain experiences, potentially serving to prime the brain for specific tasks. This insight comes almost exclusively from studies considering developmental maturation in females. As a result, it is unclear whether age-related brain plasticity is consistent across sexes, and to what extent developmental patterns differ. Using confocal microscopy and volumetric analyses, we investigated age-related brain changes coinciding with sexual maturation in the males of the facultatively eusocial sweat bee, Megalopta genalis, and the obligately eusocial bumble bee, Bombus impatiens. We compared volumetric …

Effects Of Hunter Movement And Habitat Use On Observation Rate Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus), Alyssa N. Meier
Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Hunting by humans is the primary tool for population control for many ungulate species across the United States, including white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Previous research has focused primarily on the effects of hunting on prey behavior while neglecting the potential effects hunter behavior has on the probability of harvest success. I examined the influence of hunter movement and habitat use across the landscape on observation rate of white-tailed deer. During the 2008 and 2009 Oklahoma hunting seasons, we recorded GPS and observation data of 83 individual hunters over 487 total hunts. Hunters that moved non-linearly through forested cover at a …

There are many different ways to convert a carboxylic acid to an aldehyde.1 A common way to accomplish this transformation is to use multiple steps (e.g., reduction of the carboxylic acid to the corresponding alcohol followed by selective oxidation to the aldehyde). Our success in reducing the diacid muconic acid (1) to muconaldehyde (4) in a relatively mild, one-pot process2 has led us to examine whether the method can be expanded to other carboxylic acids. We report here our findings using benzoic acid as a representative substrate.

The pathways and timing of drainage from the inundated centers of ice-wedge polygons in a warming climate have important implications for carbon flushing, advective heat transport, and transitions from methane to carbon dioxide dominated emissions. Here, we expand on previous research using a recently developed analytical model of drainage from a low-centered polygon. Specifically, we perform (1) a calibration to field data identifying necessary model refinements and (2) a rigorous model sensitivity analysis that expands on previously published indications of polygon drainage characteristics. This research provides intuition on inundated polygon drainage by presenting the first in-depth analysis of drainage within …

Targeting T cell malignancies with universal CD7-targeting chimeric antigen receptor T cells (UCART7) can lead to profound immune deficiency due to loss of normal T and NK cells. While a small population of endogenous CD7- T cells exists, these cells are unlikely to be able to repopulate the entire immune repertoire after UCART7 treatment, as they are limited in number and proliferative capacity. To rescue T and NK cells after UCART7, we created hematopoietic stem cells genetically deleted for CD7 (CD7-KO HSCs). CD7-KO HSCs were able to engraft immunodeficient mice and differentiate into T and NK cells lacking CD7 expression. …

Persistent HPV infection is causative for the majority of cervical cancer cases; however, current guidelines do not require HPV testing for newly diagnosed cervical cancer. Using an institutional cohort of 88 patients with cervical cancer treated uniformly with standard-of-care chemoradiation treatment (CRT) with prospectively collected clinical outcome data, we observed that patients with cervical tumors containing HPV genotypes other than HPV 16 have worse survival outcomes after CRT compared with patients with HPV 16+ tumors, consistent with previously published studies. Using RNA sequencing analysis, we quantified viral transcription efficiency and found higher levels of E6 and the alternative transcript E6*I …

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are employed as tools to manage human impacts, especially fishing pressure. By excluding the most destructive activities MPAs can rewild degraded areas of seabed habitat. The potential for MPAs to increase ecosystem resilience from storms is, however, not understood, nor how such events impact seabed habitats. Extreme storm disturbance impact was studied in Lyme Bay MPA, Southwest United Kingdom, where the 2008 exclusion of bottom-towed fishing from the whole site allowed recovery of degraded temperate reef assemblages to a more complex community. Severe storm impacts in 2013–2014 resulted in major damage to the seabed so that …
