BACKGROUND: Anaemia is a worldwide problem and iron deficiency is the most common cause. In pregnancy, anaemia increases the risk of adverse maternal, foetal and neonatal outcomes. India's anaemia rate is among the highest in the world with India's National Family Health Survey indicating over 50% of pregnant women were affected by anaemia. India's Anaemia Mukt Bharat-Intensified National Iron Plus Initiative aims to reduce the prevalence of anaemia among reproductive-age women, adolescents and children by 3% per year and facilitate the achievement of a Global World Health Assembly 2025 objective to achieve a 50% reduction of anaemia among women of …

Deciphering the post-transcriptional mechanisms (PTM) regulating gene expression is critical to understand the dynamics underlying transcriptomic regulation in cancer. Alternative polyadenylation (APA)-regulation of mRNA 3'UTR length by alternating poly(A) site usage-is a key PTM mechanism whose comprehensive analysis in cancer remains an important open challenge. Here we use a method and analysis pipeline that sequences 3'end-enriched RNA directly to overcome the saturation limitation of traditional 5'-3' based sequencing. We comprehensively map the APA landscape in lung cancer in a cohort of 98 tumor/non-involved tissues derived from European American and African American patients. We identify a global shortening of 3'UTR transcripts …

Fungal members of Colletotrichum (Ascomycota) were found to be associated with Chordodes formosanus, one of the three currently known horsehair worm (Nematomorpha) species in Taiwan. The fungi were identified as Colletotrichum fructicola, which is mostly known as a plant pathogen, through the use of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer and partial large subunit (nrITS + nrLSU) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) DNA sequences. To our knowledge, this report represents both the first records for Colletotrichum associated with hairworms and for fungi on Nematomorpha. These findings expand the knowledge on the ecological relationships of both clades.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
This dissertation reports and examines contributions made in the advancement of inorganic photochemistry. Empirically driven assessments are allotted to the interplay between ligand sets, excited states, and photochemistry observed in metal complexes. A methodical spectroscopic examination is provided for oligothiophene-sensitized lanthanides. Their excited state dynamics were elucidated by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy and used to develop a model explaining their wavelength-dependent dual functionality. Iron (II) cyanide and isocyanides are evaluated to identify the efficacy of strong-field ligands in promoting charge-transfer excited states. Fundamentals of ligand field theory helped conceptualize the synthetically tunable parameters and effects transposed to their absorption dynamics. Transition …

Thirteen states have enacted so-called “fetal heartbeat” laws banning abortions once embryotic cardiac activity can be detected. Courts have enjoined their enforcement as unconstitutional. However, on September 1, 2021, the Supreme Court declined to block a Texas fetal heartbeat law, which virtually eliminates access to abortion services. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed SB8 into law on May 19th, with an effective date of September 1st. The law essentially prohibits abortion after 6 weeks of gestational age, before most women know they are pregnant.
Texas’ fetal heartbeat law has a unique feature. It empowers private individuals to bring civil lawsuits not …

Regulating dietary fat absorption may impact progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Here we asked if inducible inhibition of chylomicron assembly, as observed in intestine-specific microsomal triglyceride transfer protein knockout mice (Mttp-IKO), could retard NAFLD progression and/or reverse established fibrosis in two dietary models. Mttp-IKO mice fed a methionine/choline deficient (MCD) diet exhibited reduced hepatic triglycerides (TG), inflammation and fibrosis, associated with reduced oxidative stress and downstream activation of JNK and NFκB signaling pathways. However, when Mttp

IntroductionRecurrent pulmonary exacerbations lead to progressive lung damage in cystic fibrosis (CF). Inhaled medications (mucoactive agents and antibiotics) help prevent exacerbations, but objectively measured adherence is low. We investigated whether a multi-component (complex) self-management intervention to support adherence would reduce exacerbation rates over 12 months.MethodsBetween October 2017 and May 2018, adults with CF (aged ≥16 years; 19 UK centres) were randomised to the intervention (data-logging nebulisers, a digital platform and behavioural change sessions with trained clinical interventionists) or usual care (data-logging nebulisers). Outcomes included pulmonary exacerbations (primary outcome), objectively measured adherence, body mass index (BMI), lung function (FEV1) and Cystic …

Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7OH) are the major alkaloids mediating the biological actions of the psychoactive plant kratom. To investigate the structure-activity relationships of mitragynine/7OH templates, we diversified the aromatic ring of the indole at the C9, C10, and C12 positions and investigated their G-protein and arrestin signaling mediated by mu opioid receptors (MOR). Three synthesized lead C9 analogs replacing the 9-OCH

Microwave measurements and machine learning algorithms are presented to estimate metal ion concentrations in drinking water. A novel block loop gap resonator (BLGR) as a microwave probe is designed and fabricated to estimate Pb ion concentrations in city water as low as 1 ppb with an rms error of 0.18 ppb. No physical contact between the BLGR probe and the water sample allows on-site/in situ continuous detection of ppb-level metal ion concentrations. The S11 raw data (amplitude and phase) from the BLGR are used to classify and estimate metal ion concentrations using a support vector regression algorithm. The performance …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
As a part of a Multicultural course, students in a doctoral program at a university in the Southwest worked together to synthesize a definition of social justice. The constructivist process implemented in this educational experience represented social justice in action, through co-construction of shared meaning. This definition, centered on Iris Young’s (2004) Five Faces of Oppression, resulted in the following: Social justice is addressing oppression, violence, exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, and cultural imperialism through counselors’ efforts and advocacy, while promoting a critical perspective of the culture of silence. Social Justice is an active, effective change on micro- and macro-levels to alter …

Impact Of Overseeding Cool-Season Annual Forages On Spring Regrowth Of Tifton 85 Bermudagrass, Ricardo A. Reis, Lynn E. Sollenberger, D. Urbano
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Field observations have shown stand reduction and slow spring regrowth of Tifton 85 bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) pastures overseeded with temperate forages for grazing during the cool season. This experiment compared the effect of cool-season management programs, including overseeding and use of different grazing treatments, on productivity of Tifton 85 the following warm season. There were seven treatments: four were bermudagrass overseeded with a cool-season annual forage mixture (two grasses and two legumes) and grazed differentially, and three were bermudagrass controls with differences in amount of residual stubble remaining at beginning of autumn. There was only a slight delay in …

Influence Of Grazing Frequency On Biomass Production Using Several Selected Tropical Grasses, P. Mislevy, F. G. Martin, F. M. Pate, N. F. G. Rethman
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
To provide commercial growers with forage grasses that produce well throughout the year, there is a constant need for screening and testing new germplasm. Two rhodesgrasses (Chloris gayana cv. Rhods and Callide), four stargrasses (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfuensis cv. Florona, Zimbabwe, Okeechobee, and Rhodesian No. 2), one bermudagrass (C. dactylon var. dactylon cv. Jiggs), and one creeping signalgrass (Brachiaria humidicola CIAT 6369) were tested under a mob-grazing system. Dry biomass yield increased linearly as grazing frequency (GF) was delayed from 2 to 7 weeks. The cultivars, Florona, Zimbabwe and Okeechobee stargrasses and Jiggs bermudagrass, yielded …

Variation Of Herbage Intake (Hi) From Upland Pasture, As Influenced By The Grazing Initiation Date (Gid), D. Maæešiæ, M. Kneževiæ, Z. Štafa, J. Leto
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Studies were conducted on an experimental pasture belonging to the Arrhenatherethum medioeur. and Lolio-Cynosureth. assoc. with D. glomerata, L. perenne and T. repens as main species, at an altitude of 680 m. Four equally sized paddocks (0.3 ha) were grazed by 10 Charolais heifers. The differences in total herbage dry matter intake (HDMI) between the four paddocks with different grazing initiation dates (GID) were significant (P < 0.05). The results of this experiment show that in order to achieve a higher HDMI and better herbage utilization an earlier initiation of grazing is recommended. That is, grazing should commence when the sward height is about 15 cm.

Intervening proteins, or inteins, are mobile genetic elements that are translated within host polypeptides and removed at the protein level by splicing. In protein splicing, a self-mediated reaction removes the intein, leaving a peptide bond in place. While protein splicing can proceed in the absence of external cofactors, several examples of conditional protein splicing (CPS) have emerged. In CPS, the rate and accuracy of splicing are highly dependent on environmental conditions. Because the activity of the intein-containing host protein is compromised prior to splicing and inteins are highly abundant in the microbial world, CPS represents an emerging form of posttranslational …

Injury by herbivores is a major biotic stress that limits soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] crop production. Among the main soybean insect pests, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner is responsible for causing significant economic damage in soybean. The primary management strategy for this insect is chemical control and use of Bt transgenic soybean. Alternative strategies, such as host plant resistance, are considered an efficient and less-aggressive method, especially in association with other strategies as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. In this study, we evaluated 30 soybean genotypes to verify antixenosis expression through oviposition, attractiveness, and food consumption tests. …

The Fight Over Frankenmeat: The Fda As The Proper Agency To Regulate Cell-Based “Clean Meat”, Zoe A. Bernstein
Brooklyn Law Review
In recent years, concern over the environmental, animal welfare, and human costs of animal agriculture has spurred an increased demand for nonanimal sourced protein. This has led to significant innovation in food technology. As part of this trend, food scientists have developed a process for in-vitro cultivation of meat cells to produce protein that is biologically and nutritionally identical to meat from traditionally raised and slaughtered animal sources, but that involves neither animal agriculture nor animal slaughter. This lab-grown “clean meat” represents a new era in food technology and is already having an effect on the existing meat industry. In …

Microglia act as the immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS). They play an important role in maintaining brain homeostasis but also in mediating neuroimmune responses to insult. The interactions between neurons and microglia represent a key process for neuroimmune regulation and subsequent effects on CNS integrity. However, the molecular mechanisms of neuron-glia communication in regulating microglia function are not fully understood. One recently described means of this intercellular communication is via nano-sized extracellular vesicles (EVs) that transfer a large diversity of molecules between neurons and microglia, such as proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. To determine the effects of …

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Intestinal stem cells (ISCs) are sensitive to dietary alterations and nutrient availability. Neurotensin (NT), a gut peptide localized predominantly to the small bowel and released by fat ingestion, stimulates the growth of intestinal mucosa under basal conditions and during periods of nutrient deprivation, suggesting a possible role for NT on ISC function.
METHODS: Leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein coupled receptor 5-Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein (Lgr5-EGFP) NT wild type (Nt+/+) and Lgr5-EGFP NT knockout (Nt-/-) mice were fed ad libitum or fasted for 48 hours. Small intestine tissue and crypts were examined by gene …

Identification Of The Adult Hematopoietic Liver As The Primary Reservoir For The Recruitment Of Pro-Regenerative Macrophages Required For Salamander Limb Regeneration., Ryan J Debuque, Andrew J Hart, Gabriela H Johnson, Nadia Rosenthal, James W Godwin
Faculty Research 2021
The lack of scar-free healing and regeneration in many adult human tissues imposes severe limitations on the recovery of function after injury. In stark contrast, salamanders can functionally repair a range of clinically relevant tissues throughout adult life. The impressive ability to regenerate whole limbs after amputation, or regenerate following cardiac injury, is critically dependent on the recruitment of (myeloid) macrophage white blood cells to the site of injury. Amputation in the absence of macrophages results in regeneration failure and scar tissue induction. Identifying the exact hematopoietic source or reservoir of myeloid cells supporting regeneration is a necessary step in …
