Learn X Design Conference Series
There is a shared understanding that design educations’ conventional approaches need to be challenged, however, most studies only present research on a micro level, that is, discusses innovations on a single course and neglect a holistic and strategic revision of design education including of the meso and macro levels. Therefore, this study adds to the discussion by presenting a critical literature review that reflects on previously con-ducted systematic reviews and focus groups. The outcome of this procedure are ten scenarios that show possibilities for the future of design education mapped on a mac-ro, meso, and micro framework. It was found …

Designing Criteria For Developing Educational Multimedia Games, Chaitanya Solanki, Deepak John Mathew
Learn X Design Conference Series
Increasing research is being done into the relationship between learning and games in recent years. Player engagement and intrinsic/extrinsic motivation have shown to be pertinent in improving the quality of knowledge retention in game-based learning environments. Similarly, the use of multimedia in game-based learning environments has also shown to have significant potential for effective learning; however, it is unclear whether a generalized criterion can be designed for it. This work presents a review of theories and guidelines that pertain to learning environments, game design, and multimedia learning, in an effort to distill the key elements which can help develop design …

Learn X Design Conference Series
Over the last decades, design research and design practice have become intertwined in a new way and design study programmes have to react to these changes, providing students with the ability to link their creative practice with scientific research. Design education has to develop solutions for this new demand and support these profound changes of the discipline itself by addressing these issues from the very beginning of design education on, the BA-level. In order to better understand what the problems are when carrying out research in design, this paper aims to contribute to the topic of the integration of research …

Alfalfa Response To Phosphorus Sources Associated With The Application Of Liming And Gypsum-Shoot Numbers, P. Sarmento, M. Corsi, F. P. Campos
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was grown in a Typic Mapluolox soil with triple superphosphate (TS), Gafsa phosphate (GP) and GP with gypsum (GP + G). Three rates of phosphorus application were used 50, 100 and 200 mg P dm-3, before and after liming. Alfalfa was harvested three times. Basal and axillary shoot numbers in alfalfa increased with increasing phosphorus rates. Shoots were produced in higher number with GP in comparison with TS. GP + G resulted in higher basal shoot number than GP. However, there was no gypsum effect on axillary shoot numbers. Liming before or after …

Saturated Field Hydraulic Conductivity Variation In Intensively Managed Tropical Pastures, O. Primavesi, A. C. Primavesi, S. R. Vieira
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Saturated field hydraulic conductivity was measured, using a Guelph permeameter, at the depths of 10, 20 and 60 cm, to verify the effect of intensively managed, compared to extensively managed ones, beef cattle production systems on pastures grown on three soils (Hapludox, Eutrudox, Paleudalf), in São Carlos, SP, Brazil, under tropical altitude climate. Significant differences occurred within depths (P < 0.05). However, differences decreased with years and, therefore, differences among soils and between management systems were also reduced. Highest mean conductivity values occurred at 60-cm depth and at the extensively managed sward on the sandy Hapludox. Intensively managed Paleudalf showed high resistance to reduction of conductivity at 10-cm depth. A general year effect appeared claiming for more studies on this matter.

Optimization-Based Eukaryotic Genetic Circuit Design (Eugenecid) And Modeling (Eugenecim) Tools: Computational Approach To Synthetic Biology, Wheaton L. Schroeder, Anna S. Baber, Rajib Saha
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
Synthetic biology has the potential to revolutionize the biotech industry and our everyday lives and is already making an impact. Developing synthetic biology applications requires several steps including design and modeling efforts which may be performed by in silico tools. In this work, we have developed two such tools, Eukaryotic Genetic Circuit Design (EuGeneCiD) and Modeling (EuGeneCiM), which use optimization concepts and bioparts including promotors, transcripts, and terminators in designing and modeling genetic circuits. EuGeneCiD and EuGeneCiM preclude problematic designs leading to future synthetic biology application development pipelines. EuGeneCiD and EuGeneCiM are applied to developing 30 basic logic gates as …

Different mating systems are expected to affect the extent and direction of hybridization. Due to the different levels of sexual conflict, the weak inbreeder/strong outbreeder (WISO) hypothesis predicts that gametes from self-incompatible (SI) species should outcompete gametes from self-compatible (SC) ones. However, other factors such as timing of selfing and unilateral incompatibilities may also play a role on the direction of hybridization. In addition, differential mating opportunities provided by different mating systems are also expected to affect the direction of introgression in hybrid zones involving outcrossers and selfers. Here, we explored these hypotheses with a unique case of recent hybridization …

Tragic Trade-Offs Accompany Carnivore Coexistence In The Modern World, Jeremy T. Bruskotter, John A. Vucetich, Sophie L. Gilbert, Neil H. Carter, Kelly A. George
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Two vital policy aims—biodiversity conservation and food production—are increasingly in conflict. Efforts to evaluate trade-offs between agriculture and conservation have shaped scholarly discourse around two broad strategies to agricultural production that seek to either “share” land with biodiversity or “spare” land from agriculture. However, efforts to negotiate these trade-offs are challenged by rising concern for the welfare of individual animals, both wild and domestic. We use recent efforts to “coexist” with large carnivores to illustrate how sharing and sparing strategies both create tragic, and often unacknowledged trade-offs between livestock production and carnivore conservation. We conclude the best means of conserving …

Diet Of The Golden Eagle During The Breeding Season In Northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico, Isaac Morales-Yañez, Ricardo Rodríguez-Estrella, Ana Bertha Gatica-Colima
Western North American Naturalist
The diet of the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) was studied in 4 territories in northwestern Chihuahua, México, during the breeding season. Prey remains and pellets were collected from 4 nests during 2014, 2015, and 2016. We identified 12 vertebrate species. Black-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus californicus) were the most important prey remains in terms of frequency (72%) and ingested biomass (86%). We estimated mean prey size to be 1291 g (SE = 3364), indicating that Golden Eagles prey on medium-sized animals (e.g., lagomorphs). The main threats to Golden Eagles are connected to habitat loss and habitat fragmentation, but …

Computer-Aided Diagnosis Of Low Grade Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma (Lgess), Xinxin Yang, Mark Stamp
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Low grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS) accounts for about 0.2% of all uterine cancer cases. Approximately 75% of LGESS patients are initially misdiagnosed with leiomyoma, which is a type of benign tumor, also known as fibroids. In this research, uterine tissue biopsy images of potential LGESS patients are preprocessed using segmentation and stain normalization algorithms. We then apply a variety of classic machine learning and advanced deep learning models to classify tissue images as either benign or cancerous. For the classic techniques considered, the highest classification accuracy we attain is about 0.85, while our best deep learning model achieves an …
