Racial Discrimination Is Associated With Acute Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms And Predicts Future Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Severity In Trauma-Exposed Black Adults In The United States, Claire M. Bird, E. Kate Webb, Andrew T. Schramm, Lucas Torres, Christine L. Larson, Terri A. Deroon-Cassini

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

In the United States, Black residents exposed to a traumatic event are at an increased risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and experiencing more severe symptoms compared to their non‐Hispanic White counterparts. Although previous work has suggested a link between racial discrimination and PTSD symptoms, no studies have assessed this association in a sample of traumatic injury survivors. The current study investigated whether (a) past racial discrimination was associated with acute posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and (b) discrimination prospectively contributed to the prediction of future PTSD symptoms. African American and/or Black patients (N = 113) were recruited from an …

Eargate: Gait-Based User Identification With In-Ear Microphones, Andrea Ferlini, Dong Ma, Cecilia Mascolo Oct 2021

Eargate: Gait-Based User Identification With In-Ear Microphones, Andrea Ferlini, Dong Ma, Cecilia Mascolo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human gait is a widely used biometric trait for user identification and recognition. Given the wide-spreading, steady diffusion of earworn wearables (Earables) as the new frontier of wearable devices, we investigate the feasibility of earable-based gait identification. Specifically, we look at gait-based identification from the sounds induced by walking and propagated through the musculoskeletal system in the body. Our system, EarGate, leverages an in-ear facing microphone which exploits the earable’s occlusion effect to reliably detect the user’s gait from inside the ear canal, without impairing the general usage of earphones. With data collected from 31 subjects, we show that EarGate …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Despite progress in understanding the social neuroendocrinology of close relationship processes, most work has focused on negative experiences, such as relationship conflict or stress. As a result, much less is known about the neuroendocrine implications of positive, emotionally intimate relationship experiences. In the current study, we randomly assigned 105 dating or married couples to a 30-minute semi-structured discussion task that was designed to elicit either high or low levels of closeness. Participants provided pre- and post-task saliva samples (to assess cortisol and testosterone) and post-task reports of self-disclosure, closeness, attraction, positive and negative affect, and stress. Participants found the discussion …

Weak Coupling Among Barrier Loci And Waves Of Neutral And Adaptive Introgression Across An Expanding Hybrid Zone, Mitchell Cruzan, Pamela G. Thompson, Nicolas Alexander Diaz, Elizabeth C. Hendrickson, Katie R. Gerloff, Katie A. Kline, Hannah M. Machiorlete, Jessica Persinger

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hybridization can serve as an evolutionary stimulus, but we have little understanding of introgression at early stages of hybrid zone formation. We analyze reproductive isolation and introgression between a range-limited and a widespread species. Reproductive barriers are estimated based on differences in flowering time, ecogeographic distributions, and seed set from crosses. We find an asymmetrical mating barrier due to cytonuclear incompatibility that is consistent with observed clusters of coincident and concordant tension zone clines (barrier loci) for mtDNA haplotypes and nuclear SNPs. These groups of concordant clines are spread across the hybrid zone, resulting in weak coupling among barrier loci …

A Small Rna Is Functional In Escherichia Fergusonii Despite Containing A Large Insertion., Austin P. Wright, H. Auguste Dutcher, Brianna Butler, Timothy J. Nice, Rahul Raghavan

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bacterial small RNAs (sRNAs) are important regulators of gene expression; however, the impact of natural mutations on sRNA functions has not been studied extensively. Here we show that the sRNA MgrR contains a unique 53 bp insertion in Escherichia fergusonii, a close relative of Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica. The insertion is a repetitive extragenic palindromic (REP) sequence that could block transcription, but full-length MgrR is produced in E. fergusonii, showing that the insertion has not affected sRNA production. Additionally, despite containing the large insertion, the sRNA appears to be functional because deletion of mgrR made E. fergusonii …

Bird nests in natural history collections are an abundant yet vastly underutilized source of genetic information. We sequenced the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer to identify plant species used as nest material in two contemporary (2003 and 2018) and two historical (both 1915) nest specimens constructed by Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) and Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis). A total of 13 (22%) samples yielded single, strong bands that could be identified using GenBank resources: six plants (Angiospermae), six green algae (Chlorophyta), and one ciliate (Ciliophora). Two native plant species identified in the nests included Festuca microstachys, which was introduced to the …

Insufficient funding is a major impediment to conservation efforts around the world. In the United States, a decline in hunting participation threatens sustainability of the “user-pay, public benefit” model that has supported wildlife conservation for nearly 100 years, forcing wildlife management agencies to contemplate alternative funding strategies. We investigated support for potential funding options among diverse college students, a rapidly expanding and politically active voting bloc with a potentially powerful influence on the future of conservation. From 2018 to 2020, we surveyed 17,203 undergraduate students at public universities across 22 states. Students preferred innovative approaches to conservation funding, with 72% …

Numerical Study Of Fully Coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction Of Stented Ureter By Varying The Stent Side-Holes, Erick Martinez, Ben Xu, Jianzhi Li, Yingchen Yang Oct 2021

Numerical Study Of Fully Coupled Fluid-Structure Interaction Of Stented Ureter By Varying The Stent Side-Holes, Erick Martinez, Ben Xu, Jianzhi Li, Yingchen Yang

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Ureteral stents are a measure used for many medical issues involving urology, such as kidney stones or kidney transplants. The purpose of applying stents is to help relieve the urine flow while the ureter is either blocked or trying to close itself, which creates blockages. These ureteral stents, while necessary, cause pain and discomfort to patients due to them being a solid that moves around inside the patients’ body. The ureter normally moves urine to the bladder through peristaltic forces. Due to the ureter being a hyperelastic material, these peristaltic forces cause the ureter to deform easily, making it necessary …

Soil lead (Pb) contamination is a major environmental and public health risk. Switch-grass (Panicum virgatum), a second-generation biofuel crop, is potentially useful for the long-term phytoremediation and phytoextraction of Pb contaminated soils. We evaluated the efficacy of a coor-dinated foliar application of plant growth regulators and soil fungicide and a chelator in order to optimize phytoextraction. Plants were grown in soil culture under controlled conditions. First, three exogenous nitric oxide (NO) donors were evaluated at multiple concentrations: (1) S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP); (2) sodium nitroprusside (SNP); and (3) S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO). Second, the effect of SNP (0.5 µM) was examined further with the …
