Manufacturing: The Qualitative Study Of A Transition To A Green Facility, Brandon David Staves

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This qualitative study focused on answering three core questions: How have facilities reduce pollutions in regards to the quality of air, water, land, light and noise? Which Types of pollution reduction projects are more or less successful to implement? What types of pollution are facilities focusing on and why? The results of the 15 companies surveyed show a variety of projects that facilities have used to reduce pollution, it also shows that cost is a major factor in the unsuccessful projects, and that facilities are actively focused on reducing Air, Land, and Water pollution. While the data shows a variety …

Competition within the United States workforce is growing at an unprecedented rate. Turnover rates of all organizations and businesses have reached an all-time high. According to the U.S. Labor Department, 4.3 million Americans quit their job in the month of August alone. Times have shifted to where the ball no longer resides on the side of employers, but now it resides with employees. As such, it is vital to ensure workplaces are enjoyable and encompass cultures that produce high levels of motivation, satisfaction, and engagement. As such, the retention of skilled and qualified employees must be at the forefront of …

Developing And Applying An Integrated Spatial Karst Evaluation And Management Priority Tool: Case Study In Tongass National Forest, Alaska, Usa, Christian Decelle

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Karst terrains are complex landscapes that are sensitive to human disturbance. Human activities have polluted and impacted many of these terrains around the world. To preserve these unique landscapes, many karst regions are protected and designated as national parks, geologic special areas, or UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. Despite the widespread general protection of karst landscapes globally, a review of each area’s management plan reveals there is no standardized method of cave and karst management or evaluation of karst impacts.

The non-standardization of karst management strategies may be due to the gap that exists between the needs of karst land managers and …

College Students Level Of Educational Success And Social Capital: A Comparison Of Traditional And Nontraditional Students, Travis Jacklyn Oct 2021

College Students Level Of Educational Success And Social Capital: A Comparison Of Traditional And Nontraditional Students, Travis Jacklyn

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study investigated how female/male nontraditional and traditional college students’ educational success could be influenced by both the social capital their family and friends provide and the responsibilities those close to them require. However, gender socialization may influence how certain networks, such as family and peers can help or hinder college students. Previous research found family and peers could help college students’ educational success (Betts et al., 2013; Seon, 2019), however, they can also be detrimental (Dill & Hayley, 1998). This study examined whether (1) gender and traditional/nontraditional student status are associated with educational success; and (2) whether support …

Addiction Generation: Stimulant Abuse In College Students, Jemma Kenobbie

Student Projects

Illicit use of prescription stimulants has come to the attention of clinicians, school administration, and the judicial system in recent years. Illicit stimulant use is defined as the use of prescription stimulants without a legitimate prescription or using stimulants inconsistent with the prescribed treatment plan, including diversion and inappropriate administration methods. These prescriptions have been known to cause serious side effects when taken incorrectly, yet their popularity as “study buddies” among college students has risen. The most current research has found that the percentage of undergraduate students abusing stimulants ranges from 8-43%, with an average of 17% of students abusing …

Dipl 4277 Aa Global Health, Bioterrorism, And International Security, Yanzhong Huang Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

Global health issues have affected world history more extensively than most of us can imagine. As shown in the COVID-19 pandemic, international travel threatens transborder epidemics by transporting and spreading diseases globally at jet speed. The growing risk of exposure to infectious disease, coupled with the threat of intentional release of pathogens, creates a situation in which health and security are interacting with greater frequency and intensity. This development parallels efforts to redefine the concept of security to encompass new global challenges. This interdisciplinary course focuses on global health security by addressing the following questions: How did epidemics function as …

Where has all the pollution gone? No hazardous toxic algal blooms? Incredible summer estuarine water quality! No fish kills. Banner years in recreational fisheries for Stripers and Blues and incredible numbers of Humpback whales! No going to restaurants, so greater at home use of water and septic systems! Since March 2020, drier years than most, thus reducing runoff with fertilizers and organic pesticides, resulting in reduced water contamination. So maybe, just maybe, this COVID- 19 period which has altered our collective lives forever, has also resulted in a grand experiment on what has been hiding in plain sight? That is, …

Roles Matter: Graduate Student Perceptions Of Active Learning In The Stem Courses They Take And Those They Teach, Lorelei E. Patrick, Leigh Ann Howell, Everett William Wischusen

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Despite many calls to reform undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education to incorporate active learning into classes, there has been little attention paid to graduate level classrooms or courses taught by graduate students. Here, we set out to understand if and how STEM graduate students’ perceptions of active learning change in the classes they take versus those they teach. We found that graduate students had taken relatively few graduate level classes using active learning and they felt that more time should be devoted to active learning in the courses they were taking. Teaching assistants felt that they were …

Optimization Of Sds Page Analysis Of Parvalbumin Protein In Fish, Nguyen Le Oct 2021

Optimization Of Sds Page Analysis Of Parvalbumin Protein In Fish, Nguyen Le

Undergraduate Research (Journal)

SDS PAGE technique plays an essential role in the study of protein. However, this analytical method occasionally suffers from limitations such as poor separation, signal reduction, or total absence of target bands. This research aims to develop a protocol to improve the consistency of the technique while quantifying 10-12kDa parvalbumin proteins. It is a major fish allergen associated with neurodegenerative diseases, yet, the amount of parvalbumin in different kinds of fish has not been published. In this research, proteins in flounder, white, catfish and tilapia were extracted with PBS and quantified with Bradford assay and SDS PAGE. The results supported …

Fisheries Science Update - West Coast Demersal Scalefish Resource - October 2021, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Fisheries Science Updates

The West Coast Demersal Scalefish Resource (WCDSR) is halfway into a 20-year recovery plan following a period of overfishing in the 1990s and 2000s.

This latest assessment provides an important “health check” on the recovery status.

The recovery plan is based on maintaining recreational (including charter) and commercial sector’s total fishing mortality below catch limits and protecting key spawning aggregations to recover the WCDSR by 2030.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) tracks recovery progress by undertaking weight of evidence stock assessments of WCDSR indicator species dhufish and pink snapper every 3-5 years.

The latest science shows …

Developmental Participation Of Vip Interneurons In Cortical Dynamics, Daniel Barson Oct 2021

Developmental Participation Of Vip Interneurons In Cortical Dynamics, Daniel Barson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In the mammalian cerebral cortex, local and long-range synaptic connections are believed to relay information related a diverse array of cognitive, emotional, and physiological functions to influence the computations performed by single neurons. While the anatomical connectivity of a single neuron is static on short timescales, its functional involvement in distributed networks may fluctuate rapidly to subserve moment-to-moment changes in behavior. A sparse class of interneurons that express vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) has been hypothesized to mediate these fluctuations by modulating the gain of cortical micro-circuits in response to neuromodulatory and long-range cortico-cortical inputs. To test this hypothesis, we developed …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Aging And Alzheimer’S Disease, Shannon Noble Leslie Oct 2021

Molecular Mechanisms Of Aging And Alzheimer’S Disease, Shannon Noble Leslie

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a major public health crisis. AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disease and is the leading cause of dementia worldwide. Currently, there are no disease-modifying drugs available for the treatment of AD. Although autosomal dominant genetic forms of the disease are very rare, they are the foundation for many models of study; in part, because the etiology of the far more common, sporadic AD, remains unknown. While the cause of most AD cases is undetermined, age is a well-known, significant risk factor. The work presented in this thesis relies on studies of non-genetically modified aging rodents and …

Synaptic Density Imaging With Sv2a Using Positron Emission Tomography: Optimization Of Reference Region Analysis And Applications In The Human Spinal Cord And The Developing Nonhuman Primate Brain, Samantha Rossano Oct 2021

Synaptic Density Imaging With Sv2a Using Positron Emission Tomography: Optimization Of Reference Region Analysis And Applications In The Human Spinal Cord And The Developing Nonhuman Primate Brain, Samantha Rossano

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a functional imaging modality in which radioactive ligands are used to target physiological functions, including metabolism or receptor densities, in vivo. Once administered into a subject, the PET radioligand distributes throughout the body and undergoes radioactive decay, emitting two gamma rays 180 degree from each other. These gamma rays are detected by the PET camera as coincidence events, and the PET raw data are reconstructed into 4-dimenstional images (x, y, z, t). Dynamic PET images can be quantified by applying various kinetic models to radioactivity concentrations in a volume or region of interest (ROI) over …

Deconvolution: From Transcriptomics To Immunomics, Daiwei Tang Oct 2021

Deconvolution: From Transcriptomics To Immunomics, Daiwei Tang

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The developments of sequencing technologies in the past two decades have enabled exciting findings and rapid accumulations of many kinds of -omics data. Each type of -omics data is designated to measure a specific characteristic of the biological systems, e.g. DNA-sequencing for mutations and RNA-sequencing for gene expression. With proper statistical and computational methods, these data can be integrated to answer new questions. This data reproposing is possible because the target signals are already encoded in the data and require proper tools to decode. In this regard, these methods are often called ``deconvolution" methods. In this dissertation, I will present …

Neurodevelopmental Impacts Of Prenatal Exposures To Per- And Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances; Multiple Outcome Assessments In Childhood Age 5 To 11 Years, Jiajun Luo Oct 2021

Neurodevelopmental Impacts Of Prenatal Exposures To Per- And Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances; Multiple Outcome Assessments In Childhood Age 5 To 11 Years, Jiajun Luo

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic fluorine-containing chemicals that are widely used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications. Several PFAS compounds were reported to be ubiquitously detected in blood samples collected from the general population since the 1990s. Concerns are raised that PFAS exposure among pregnant women could affect offspring neurodevelopment, mainly because of two reasons: a) PFAS can transfer across the placenta during early gestation making them a direct threat to fetal brain development, and b) PFAS can interfere with maternal endocrine homeostasis during pregnancy which has been suggested to play a crucial role on offspring …

Novel Functions For Large Noncoding Nucleic Acids In Bacteria, Danielle Widner Oct 2021

Novel Functions For Large Noncoding Nucleic Acids In Bacteria, Danielle Widner

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Due to the compact nature of bacterial genomes, large, highly structured noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are rare, yet when present these large ncRNAs perform sophisticated biochemical functions, often as ribozymes. Even rarer are DNAs that adapt complex single-stranded structures, as natural opportunities for such structures to form and evolve are limited. Presented in this thesis is research on one large ncRNA and three highly structured, single-stranded DNAs (ssDNAs) that expands our knowledge of the functional capabilities of structured nucleic acids. OLE (Ornate, Large, Extremophilic) RNA is among the largest and most widespread ncRNAs in bacteria without an ascribed biochemical function. The …
