Cell-Based Therapies For Retinal Diseases: A Review Of Clinical Trials And Direct To Consumer "Cell Therapy" Clinics, John Hinkle, Raziyeh Mahmoudzadeh, Ajay E. Kuriyan

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Background: The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is implicated in the pathophysiology of many retinal degenerative diseases. This cell layer is also an ideal target for cell-based therapies. Several early phase clinical trials evaluating cell therapy approaches for diseases involving the RPE, such as age-related macular degeneration and Stargardt's macular dystrophy have been published. However, there have also been numerous reports of complications from unproven "cell therapy" treatments marketed by "cell therapy" clinics. This review aims to outline the particular approaches in the different published clinical trials for cell-based therapies for retinal diseases. Additionally, the controversies surrounding experimental treatments offered outside …

Schiller

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells that have a critical role in the maintenance of skeletal tissues such as bone, cartilage, and the fat in bone marrow. In addition to providing microenvironmental support for hematopoietic processes, BM-MSCs can differentiate into various mesodermal lineages including osteoblast/osteocyte, chondrocyte, and adipocyte that are crucial for bone metabolism. While BM-MSCs have high cell-to-cell heterogeneity in gene expression, the cell subtypes that contribute to this heterogeneity in vivo in humans have not been characterized. To investigate the transcriptional diversity of BM-MSCs, we applied single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) on freshly isolated CD271+ …

Open Source Software Toolchain For Automated Non‐Targeted Screening For Toxins In Alternative Foods, S. W. Breuer, L. Toppen, S. K. Schum, J. M. Pearce

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Previous published methods for non-targeted screening of toxins in alternative foods such as leaf concentrate, agricultural residues or plastic fed to biological consortia are time consuming and expensive and thus present accessibility, as well as, time-constraint issues for scientists from under resourced settings to identify safe alternative foods. The novel methodology presented here, utilizes a completely free and open source software toolchain for automatically screening unknown alternative foods for toxicity using experimental data from ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The process uses three distinct tools (mass spectrometry analysis with MZmine 2, formula assignment with MFAssignR, and data filtering with …

This study provided new knowledge related to evidence from the psychiatric-mental health nursing practice, themes of barriers, and facilitators toward a restraint-free practice. The participants describe the …

Massive Modularity : An Ontological Hypothesis Or An Adaptationist Discovery Heuristic?, Joseph David De Jesús Villena Saldaña Oct 2021

Massive Modularity : An Ontological Hypothesis Or An Adaptationist Discovery Heuristic?, Joseph David De Jesús Villena Saldaña

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Cognitive modules are internal mental structures. Some theorists and empirical researchers hypothesize that the human mind is either partially or massively comprised of structures that are modular in nature. Modules are also invoked to explain cognitive capacities associated with the performance of specific functional tasks.

Jerry Fodor (1983) considered that modules are useful only for explaining relatively low-level systems (input systems). These are the systems involved in capacities like perception and language. For Fodor, the central (high-level) systems of mind — those involved in capacities like judgment (the “fixation of belief” in Fodor’s jargon), planning (practical reasoning), decision-making, and so …

Assessing The Role Of The Pelvic Canal In Supporting The Gut In Humans, Jeanelle Uy, Natalie Laudicina Oct 2021

Assessing The Role Of The Pelvic Canal In Supporting The Gut In Humans, Jeanelle Uy, Natalie Laudicina

Peer Reviewed Articles

The human pelvic canal (true pelvis) functions to support the abdominopelvic organs and serves as a passageway for reproduction (females). Previous research suggests that these two functions work against each other with the expectation that the supportive role results in a narrower pelvic midplane, while fetal passage necessitates a larger opening. In this research, we examine how gut size relates to the size and shape of the true pelvis, which may have implications on how gut size can influence pelvic floor integrity. Pelves and in vivo gut volumes were measured from CT scans of 92 adults (48 female, 44 male). …

Emerging Evidence On The Effects Of Dietary Factors On The Gut Microbiome In Colorectal Cancer, Muni Rubens, Venkataraghavan Ramamoorthy, Anshul Saxena, Raees Tonse, Peter Mcgranaghan, Adeel Kaiser, Rupesh Kotecha

All Publications

Dietary factors play an important role in shaping the gut microbiome which, in turn, regulates the molecular events in colonic mucosa. The composition and resulting metabolism of the gut microbiome have been implicated in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Diets low in dietary fibers and phytomolecules as well as other lifestyle-related factors may predispose to CRC. Emerging evidence demonstrates that the predominance of microbes, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum, can predispose the colonic mucosa to malignant transformation. Dietary and lifestyle modifications have been demonstrated to restrict the growth of potentially harmful opportunistic organisms. In this study, we aim to present …

Chlorophyll Concentration (Spad Values) As An Indicator Of Crude Protein Content And As A Selection Criterion In Grass Breeding, N. Gáborèík Oct 2021

Chlorophyll Concentration (Spad Values) As An Indicator Of Crude Protein Content And As A Selection Criterion In Grass Breeding, N. Gáborèík

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The main aim of the study was to analyse chlorophyll a + b content (SPAD values) determined by portable chlorophyllmeter (SPAD- 502, Minolta, Japan) and crude protein content in leaves of timothy, coocksfoot, perennial ryegrass and meadow fescue (total 24 cultivars). Differences between both parameters were confirmed and a close relationship between chlorophyll content (SPAD values) and crude protein concentration was found. Correlation coefficient between SPAD and crude protein varied from 0.541++ for ryegrass to 0.906++ for timothy. This fact should be used for selection of grasses with higher crude protein content and/or better use of mineral soil …

Evaluation Of Red Clover Populations Selected For Persistence And Dry Matter Yield In Rio Grande Do Sul, Brasil, M. Dall’Agnol, D. P. Montardo, J. K. Gonçalves

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Red clover is one of the most important temperate legume species and it is used to alleviate the lack of forage in natural grasslands during the cool season in Rio Gra do Sul, Brasil. However, the lack of persistence presented by this species has not allowed its full utilization. Hence, a breeding program was started to select plants with more persistence and with good dry matter (DM) yield. This work was carried out at the “Estação Experimental Agronômica”, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Three selected red clover populations were evaluated in relation to the best available commercial check, …

The genetic variation and genotype by environment interaction of crown rust resistance of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) was evaluated at two locations in Argentina, as part of the breeding programme in progress at our Institute. Forty half sib families originated from commercial tetraploid cultivars, were grown from seeds in a greenhouse during autumn 1999. At the stage of tillering initiation forty eight plants/familiy were randomly selected and transplanted as spaced plant trial in a randomized design with three replicates, at the two locations. All plants were scored for a range of morphological and phytopatological attributes. The severity of …

Differences Between Diploid And Induced Tetraploid Lotus Glaber Mill. (Lotus Tenuis Waldst. & Kit.) Plants, M. S. Barufaldi, H. N. Crosta, M. F. Eseiza, R. H. Rodríguez, E. Sánchez Oct 2021

Differences Between Diploid And Induced Tetraploid Lotus Glaber Mill. (Lotus Tenuis Waldst. & Kit.) Plants, M. S. Barufaldi, H. N. Crosta, M. F. Eseiza, R. H. Rodríguez, E. Sánchez

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Narrowleaf birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus glaber Mill.) is an important forage legume which has spread widely and naturalized in the grasslands of the Depressed Pampas of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. L. glaber is an alogamic diploid species with a low number of chromosomes (2n=2x= 12). These features show it as a species through which induced autopolyploids by colchicine-doubling of seedlings can be obtained. In this paper, we comparatively analyze fertility and size pollen grain, stomata length, central leaflet length and width and central leaflet ratio width/length in diploid plants and induced-autotetraploid plants of L. glaber. The results …

Man Camps And Bad Men: Litigating Violence Against American Indian Women, Ana Condes Oct 2021

Man Camps And Bad Men: Litigating Violence Against American Indian Women, Ana Condes

Northwestern University Law Review

The crisis of sexual violence plaguing Indian Country is made drastically worse by oil-pipeline construction, which often occurs near reservations. The “man camps” constructed to house pipeline workers are hotbeds of rape, domestic violence, and sex trafficking, and American Indian women are frequently targeted due to a perception that men will not be prosecuted for assaulting them. Victims have little recourse, facing underfunded police departments, indifferent prosecutors, and a federal government all too willing to turn a blind eye to the ongoing violence.

This Note proposes a litigation strategy for tribes to address the crisis and compel federal action. Litigation …

A Discrete Multiphase Approach For The Infiltration Of A Nanofluid Around A Staggered Microfiber Matrix., Ahmed Elgafy

Mansoura Engineering Journal

In the present work a numerical study based on discrete multiphase approach, Lagrangian approach, is proposed to investigate and predict the trajectories of nanoparticles- filled fluid (nanofluid) infiltrated around a staggered microfiber matrix. The trajectory of the nanoparticle has been predicted by integration the force balance on it in a Lagrangian references frame during its motion through the fluid. The governing integral equations for the conservation of mass, momentum and energy have been solved in a segregated numerical fashion by a Control-Volume-Based Finite-Element Method. The nanoparticles trajectories and their interactions with fluid flow and microfiber walls have been predicted showing …

Investigation Of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Pathogenesis Of Mammalian Cells, Paige Elise Allen Oct 2021

Investigation Of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Pathogenesis Of Mammalian Cells, Paige Elise Allen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia are obligate intracellular bacteria that are transmitted by ticks during a bloodmeal to a mammalian host. Interestingly, the SFG pathogen, Rickettsia conorii, has been shown to infect and grow in macrophages with a similar efficiency as the target endothelial cell, whereas a non-human pathogenic counterpart, Rickettsia montanensis, is unable to grow within macrophages. We have since determine that this phenotype applies to other pathogenic and non-human pathogenic Rickettsia, showing a correlation with growth in macrophages and rickettsial virulence. Recently, our lab has also defined host proteins that are altered during macrophage infection with …

Breeding For Resistance To Strike Leaf Blight (Scolecotrichum Graminis) Of Orchardgras In Argentina, A. Andrés, M. Ruiz Diaz, J. Anonne, B. S. Rosso

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A collection of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) was screened under field conditions for resistance to strike leaf blight (SLB) caused by the fungus Scolecotrichum graminis. On the whole, thirty five entries from different countries were studied by sampling ten genotypes from each origin, clonally propagated and transplanted as spaced-plant trial in a randomized design with two replicates. Plants were periodically assessed during 1996 and 1997 by estimating disease severity (percentage of leaf affected). During 1997, disease severity data were used to calculate the area under disease progress curves (AUDPC) as a complementary attribute to screen for resistance to …

Mitigation Strategies For Central Nervous System Oxygen Toxicity In Rodents: Ketone Metabolic Therapy And Mitochondrial Antioxidant Therapy, Christopher Manuel Hinojo Oct 2021

Mitigation Strategies For Central Nervous System Oxygen Toxicity In Rodents: Ketone Metabolic Therapy And Mitochondrial Antioxidant Therapy, Christopher Manuel Hinojo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) is a frequently encountered condition in undersea medicine and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The risk of CNS oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT) seizures limits its use in hyperbaric medicine and limits bottom time for diving operations. In this study, we sought to understand the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in two mitigation strategies for CNS-OT; ketone metabolic therapy (KMT), which is known to delay onset of CNS-OT seizures, and mitochondria targeted antioxidant therapy (MitoTAT), which has never been tested under HBO2 conditions. We specifically focused on superoxide anions, one of the early reduction products of molecular oxygen, and …
