The Flight Of The Wild Gander By Joseph Campbell, Phillip Fitzsimmons

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

The Flight of the Wild Gander: Explorations in the Mythological Dimension - Selected Essays, 1944-1968 is a 2018 addition to The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell series. This volume of essays begins with a history of the Grimm brothers and fairy tales, moves on to the author’s ideas on the role of society to the development of mythologies, and ends with the secularization of the sacred. This book would go nicely with his The Mythic Dimension: Selected Essays 1959–1987, a 2017 reissue of the volume, also for The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell series. Both books develop similar themes about …

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used for relieving pain and inflammation accompanying numerous disease states. The primary therapeutic mechanism of these widely used drugs is the inhibition of cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 (COX1, 2) enzymes that catalyze the conversion of arachidonic acid into prostaglandins. At higher doses, NSAIDs are used for prevention of certain types of cancer and as experimental treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. In the immune system, various NSAIDs have been reported to influence neutrophil function and lymphocyte proliferation, and affect ion channels and cellular calcium homeostasis. Transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) cation channels are highly expressed in …

Nonvolatile Resistive Switching Memory Based On Monosaccharide Fructose Film, Yuan Xing, Brandon Sueoka, Kuan Yew Cheong, Feng Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we report resistive random-access memory (RRAM) based on a monosaccharide—fructose for nonvolatile memory in biocompatible and "green" electronics. Fructose thin film acts as the resistive switching layer with Al and Ag top electrodes for comparison. Both devices demonstrated highly reproducible nonvolatile bipolar resistive switching behaviors with a large on/off ratio of ∼106 for the Al electrode and ∼105 for the Ag electrode. The forming voltage, set voltage, and memory window are also larger for the Al electrode than the Ag electrode, but the reset voltages are comparable. Dominant conduction mechanisms of fructose films were proposed. …

Social Anxiety Screening And Associated Factors Among University Students, Kathleen Prendergast Oct 2021

Social Anxiety Screening And Associated Factors Among University Students, Kathleen Prendergast

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Social anxiety is a type of anxiety triggered by social situations whereby the individual feels scrutinized by others, and which may contribute to avoidance of certain situations. This avoidance can interfere with personal, academic, and career endeavors. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help manage social anxiety. However, social anxiety is often underrecognized and
under treated. A survey with the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) was disseminated to identify and address this need among students in a large Northeastern university in the United States. The study is valuable as a pilot study. There was a small response rate for participation in the …

Restorative Practices: Its Impact On Racial Inequity In Pk-12 Schools, Shelia Evonne Boozer

Theses and Dissertations

PagesThis research explores the relationship between Restorative Practices and race, specifically how Black students experience RP when race is not centered. It also explores the ways anti-Blackness influences the implementation of restorative practices and results in further racial inequities and racial oppression through the lens of Critical Race Theory. The central research questions are: In what ways, if any, does RP address racial inequities in PK-12 schools? In what ways do districts implement RP? In what ways, if any, does RP impact institutional racism in school systems? How does RP address the social and emotional issues of historically marginalized students …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Halogen bonding (XB) is a highly directional, non-covalent intermolecular interaction between a molecule (XB donor) presenting a halogen with an electron-deficient region or sigma hole (σ-hole) and an electron-rich or Lewis-base molecule (XB acceptor). A systematic, experimental, and theoretical study of solution-phase XB strength as a function of the molecular structure for both XB donor and acceptor molecules is presented. The impact of specific structural features is assessed using 19F and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) titrations to determine association constants, density functional theory calculations for interaction energies and bond lengths, as well as 19F–1H …

The Regulation Of Plant Vegetative Phase Transition And Rejuvenation: Mirnas, A Key Regulator, Tajbir Raihan, Robert L. Geneve, Sharyn E. Perry, Carlos M. Rodriguez Lopez Oct 2021

The Regulation Of Plant Vegetative Phase Transition And Rejuvenation: Mirnas, A Key Regulator, Tajbir Raihan, Robert L. Geneve, Sharyn E. Perry, Carlos M. Rodriguez Lopez

Horticulture Faculty Publications

In contrast to animals, adult organs in plants are not formed during embryogenesis but generated from meristematic cells as plants advance through development. Plant development involves a succession of different phenotypic stages and the transition between these stages is termed phase transition. Phase transitions need to be tightly regulated and coordinated to ensure they occur under optimal seasonal, environmental conditions. Polycarpic perennials transition through vegetative stages and the mature, reproductive stage many times during their lifecycles and, in both perennial and annual species, environmental factors and culturing methods can reverse the otherwise unidirectional vector of plant development. Epigenetic factors regulating …

A Molecular And Morphological Guide To The Pilose Crayfishes Of Western North America, Nicole G. Principe, Kurt T. Ash, Mark A. Davis, Rachel M. Egly, Eric R. Larson

Western North American Naturalist

The Snake River pilose crayfish Pacifastacus connectens and pilose crayfish Pacifastacus gambelii are sister species endemic to western North America that require increased conservation attention due to apparent range declines. We report results of molecular analyses that sought to clarify where P. connectens and P. gambelii occur relative to each other as well as morphological analyses that sought to help nonspecialists reliably identify these species in the field. We conducted our analyses on voucher specimens recently collected from across the presumed native ranges of both pilose crayfish species. We sequenced the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene of these …

Morphological Evidence Of Maladaptation To Introduced Predators In Gambusia Senilis From Its Extant Range In The Conchos Basin (Chihuahua, Mexico), Eric K. Moody, Kathleen L. Sterup, María De Lourdes Lozano-Vilano

Western North American Naturalist

Desert fishes are among the most imperiled yet poorly studied groups of fishes on Earth. Human modifications of the environment and introductions of invasive species frequently drive population declines and extinctions of fishes in arid regions of North America. One recent example is the extirpation of Gambusia senilis from the Devils River in Texas following the construction of Amistad Reservoir on the Rio Grande. The direct cause of this extirpation is unclear, but it has been hypothesized that the introduction of predatory bass (Micropterus spp.) to the river played at least some role. We tested this hypothesis using a …

Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Oct 2021

Moralizing The Law: Lactating Workers And The Transformation Of Supervising Managers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

The Lactation at Work Law amended the Fair Labor Standards Act to mandate employer accommodation of employees’ breast milk expression. Interviews with employees, human resource specialists, and supervising managers in nine industries found that some organizations’ supervising managers, who initially perceived accommodations only as a legal mandate furthering managerial goals, over time changed to understanding lactation accommodations through a children’s-health lens that created morality-driven motivations for legal compliance–a “moralization of the law.” Educational discussions with lactating employees not only provided these supervising managers with insights into lactation at work, but also sensitized them to ethical issues surrounding lactation accommodations.

The Shape Of Water In J.R.R. Tolkien’S The Lord Of The Rings, Norbert Schürer Oct 2021

The Shape Of Water In J.R.R. Tolkien’S The Lord Of The Rings, Norbert Schürer

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Water is omnipresent in many shapes and forms in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. To most critics, this water symbolizes melancholy, hope, and salvation—but then these scholars treat all water as if it were the same. In contrast, I demonstrate that there are six always intertwined and overlapping aspects or facets of representations of water: instrumental (to move the plot forward), geographical (to set up distinctions and boundaries), figurative (images of water employed in rhetorical devices), mystical (magical incarnations of water), pathetic (mirroring the emotions of characters), and intentional (creating meaning by prefiguring and intensifying character’s ideas and …

Mirrors To The Underworld: Reflective Portals Between Life And Death In The Harry Potter Series, Thea Juneau Oct 2021

Mirrors To The Underworld: Reflective Portals Between Life And Death In The Harry Potter Series, Thea Juneau

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This article argues that reflective surfaces throughout all seven Harry Potter novels symbolize thresholds between discrete worlds. By displaying Harry’s dead parents on ‘the other side’ of the Mirror of Erised, the text draws on the Myth of Narcissus and various other mythological death-mirrors to create the impression of an inverse afterlife realm where the dead live again, supporting the central themes of death and grief in the series. By drawing upon Lori M. Campbell’s theory of object ‘porters,’ the article shows how the gradual transformation of this framework through more abstract reflections (eyes, creatures, lakes) reveals a deep symbolic …

Barriers And Motivating Factors To Parent Involvement In The Well-Being Promotion Program, Alexis C. Elvy Oct 2021

Barriers And Motivating Factors To Parent Involvement In The Well-Being Promotion Program, Alexis C. Elvy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Well-Being Promotion Program (WBPP) is a school-based positive psychology intervention implemented in both primary and secondary schools to increase subjective well-being in children and adolescents. Through the inclusion of a parent information session and weekly parent contacts, parents of students enrolled in the program are encouraged to enhance their child’s generalization of positive activities and relationship building skills. However, previous implementation of the WBPP provides evidence for the existence of barriers to parental involvement in the intervention. Although the literature on parental involvement in school-based positive psychology interventions is sparse, research conducted with a variety of school-based and clinical …

The Development Of Bioactive Peptidomimetics Based On Γ-Aapeptides, Minghui Wang Oct 2021

The Development Of Bioactive Peptidomimetics Based On Γ-Aapeptides, Minghui Wang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Peptidomimetics are small protein like chains which can mimic primary, secondary or eventertiary structures of peptides. They have been attracting more and more attention because of their special advantages, such as high tolerance to proteolytic degradation and thousands of chemical diversities. γ-AApeptides were developed by our group as a kind of peptidomimetics that represent γ-substituted-N-acylated-N-aminoethyl amino acids. Many biological functions of γ-AApeptides have already been discovered. To expand the potential application of γ-AApeptides, I designed and synthesized three series of antimicrobial derivatives with broad-spectrum of antibacterial activity. A one-bead-two-compound thioether bridged macrocyclic γ-AApeptides library was built and screened against NRF2 …

Project Aim: The current program aimed to determine the need to incorporate emergency management training in the school-based health center (SBHC) setting. Methods: This quality improvement project method was a pre-intervention with post-intervention design. The …

The Creation Of A Template For The Incorporation Of A Human Milk Analyzer Into A Human Milk Bank, Sarah Rieber Oct 2021

The Creation Of A Template For The Incorporation Of A Human Milk Analyzer Into A Human Milk Bank, Sarah Rieber

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

A milk bank is a nonprofit service that collects, screens, and processes by pasteurization human milk that is donated by mothers not biologically related to the infant in need. Milk is then dispensed to hospitals and private homes to babies with a prescription. A milk bank collects and analyzes human milk, as breast milk is the ideal nutrition source and the gold standard feeding method for infants. Breast milk significantly reduces premature babies' chance of developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and offers gastrointestinal protection, increases immunity, decreases the likelihood of asthma, allergies, ear infections, obesity, and respiratory ailments. Some mothers …

Three-Dimensional Visual Dynamic Simulation Of Rice Leaf Cells, Deheng Zhao, Yingding Zhao, Hongyun Yang, Wenlong Yi

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To explore the evolution process of rice leaf cell morphology with the help of computer visualization technology, it is necessary to establish the biomechanical relationship between the cell geometry model and its deformation. A dynamic simulation method is proposed for the 3D visualization of leaf cells based on the physical-mechanical properties, in which the cytoskeleton topology is represented by a "half-edge" data structure, and the surface geometries are constructed using a bicubic Bézier surface. The control parameters of a deformed surface are determined through "vertex", "edge" or "face" topological unit query algorithms of the cytoskeleton, and the cell stress-strain …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The availability of high quality forage especially during the dry season remains a major challenge to ruminant livestock production in Nigeria and many parts of West Africa. Due to the prevailing mismatch between livestock population and supply of feed resources in the arid and semi arid Nigeria, the humid forest zone represents a potential source for crop residues, especially during the dry season due to longer rainfall duration and suitable climate. This study was conducted to evaluate forage yield and nutritive quality of haulm from selected dual purpose cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) cultivars in the humid rain forest …
