The aggregation of the 37-amino acid polypeptide human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP), as either insoluble amyloid or as small oligomers, appears to play a direct role in the death of human pancreatic β-islet cells in type 2 diabetes. hIAPP is considered to be one of the most amyloidogenic proteins known. The quick aggregation of hIAPP leads to the formation of toxic species, such as oligomers and fibers, that damage mammalian cells (both human and rat pancreatic cells). Whether this toxicity is necessary for the progression of type 2 diabetes or merely a side effect of the disease remains unclear. If …

Veganic Agriculture In The United States: Opportunities For Research, Outreach, And Education, Alisha Utter, Mona Seymour
Veganic Agriculture In The United States: Opportunities For Research, Outreach, And Education, Alisha Utter, Mona Seymour
Urban and Environmental Studies Faculty Works
A growing number of farmers are excluding animal inputs from crop production, an approach commonly referred to as veganic or stockfree organic agriculture. This research-based article discusses the soil health and fertility strategies reported by a sample of U.S. veganic farmers. These approaches may be relevant beyond the veganic community to farmers seeking innovative methods for produce safety and nutrient cycling. Agricultural outreach professionals (AOPs), including Extension personnel, play a critical role in supporting veganic practices by serving as cross-pollinators between farmers and research institutions. Thus, the article endeavors to expand AOP familiarity with veganic practices and benefits.
Environmental Citizen Suits And The Inequities Of Races To The Top, David E. Adelman, Jory Reilly-Diakun
Environmental Citizen Suits And The Inequities Of Races To The Top, David E. Adelman, Jory Reilly-Diakun
University of Colorado Law Review
Environmental citizen suits were founded on the belief that empowering organizations and individuals to take legal action would provide a backstop against lax federal or state programs. Working in conjunction with the system of cooperative federalism, citizen suits were designed to uphold minimum levels of environmental protection and to provide a restraint on so called "races to the bottom" in which states compete for economic development by relaxing environmental standards. To our knowledge, no one has considered whether the geographic distribution of citizen suits could have the opposite effect-namely, that it reinforces rather than mitigates disparities in the levels of …
Outsourced Emissions: Why Local Governments Should Track And Measure Consumption- Based Greenhouse Gases, Jonathan Rosenbloom
Outsourced Emissions: Why Local Governments Should Track And Measure Consumption- Based Greenhouse Gases, Jonathan Rosenbloom
University of Colorado Law Review
While many local governments track greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions, almost all of them exclude most GHGs associated with consumption. These consumption-based emissions stem from the lifecycle production, pre-purchase transportation, sale, and disposal of goods, food, and services produced outside of a local jurisdiction but consumed inside the jurisdiction. Based on the limited data measuring extraterritorial emissions, these consumption-based emissions amount to more than half-and in some places more than threefourths- of GHG emissions directly connected to local consumption patterns and behaviors. This Article argues that local governments should track and measure these pervasive GHGs. Doing so may unlock meaningful information …

The current cross-cultural study aimed to extend research on parenting and children’s prosocial behavior by examining relations among parental warmth, values related to family obligations (i.e., children’s support to and respect for their parents, siblings, and extended family), and prosocial behavior during the transition to adolescence (from ages 9 to 12). Mothers, fathers, and their children (N = 1107 families) from 8 countries including 11 cultural groups (Colombia; Rome and Naples, Italy; Jordan; Kenya; the Philippines; Sweden; Thailand; and African Americans, European Americans, and Latin Americans in the United States) provided data over 3 years in 3 waves (Mage …
The (French) Creole Turn?, Jonathan Gosnell
The (French) Creole Turn?, Jonathan Gosnell
French Studies: Faculty Publications
In what ways can study of cultural mixing or métissages, often linked to histories of empire, colonization, and assimilation, help to better understand complexities in contemporary French and francophone societies? How can theories of creolization explain ambiguous ethnic, racial, and national phenomena that have long existed but have remained obscure? This article critically examines hybrid cultures that have coalesced as a result of pervasive French presence in the world over the last several centuries. The publications of Histoire mondiale de la France and its English translation France in the World: A New Global History sparked debate both inside and outside …

Women's Votes, Women's Voices, And The Limits Of Criminal Justice Reform, 1911-1950, Carolyn B. Ramsey
University of Colorado Law Review
Deriving its vigor from the work of grassroots organizations at the state and local levels, the League of Women Voters (LWV) sought, in the first half of the twentieth century, to provide newly enfranchised women with a political education to strengthen their voice in public affairs. Local branches like the San Francisco Center learned from experience-through practical involvement in a variety of social welfare and criminal justice initiatives. This Article, written for a symposium commemorating the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment, assesses the role of LWV leaders in California and especially San Francisco in reforming three aspects of the criminal …

Power Amplification Strategies Across Animals, Rayhan Asif
Power Amplification Strategies Across Animals, Rayhan Asif
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Animals use muscles for movement, but some have evolved mechanisms to exceed maximum power used in a motion known as power amplification. In this literature review, I analyzed and compared the evolution of structures capable of power amplification between species. Structures capable of power amplification were broken down into the basic components of the engine, amplifier, and tool. The species analyzed were found to possess necessary structures for power amplification which were relatively similar to each other in morphology, but varied greatly in function. The ease with which these structures evolved was evaluated based on the amount of divergence which …
Effect Of Metal Ions On Peptide Folding, Lucas Greggila
Effect Of Metal Ions On Peptide Folding, Lucas Greggila
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
ABSTRACT: Metal sulfides and other minerals were present on early Earth and most likely contributed to the origins of life as we know it. At some stage in prebiotic chemical evolution, random coil polypeptides obtained alpha helices and beta sheet structures to create enzymes. Many early proteins contain transition metal sulfide clusters at their core active sites. Here, I examined the effects of Zns, FeS and CdS, three metal sulfides that existed in early Earth environmental settings, on structure of random coil polyglutamic acid under neutral pH conditions. These minerals did not induce a conformational change in a polyglutamic acid …
Effects Of Hydrophobicity And Hydrophilicity On Adsorption Of Blood Plasma Protein, Tori Taylor Zimmerman
Effects Of Hydrophobicity And Hydrophilicity On Adsorption Of Blood Plasma Protein, Tori Taylor Zimmerman
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In recent times, Nanoparticles (NPs) are used in medical practices especially for their contribution to drug delivery. Blood plasma protein binds to titanium dioxide nanoparticles and prevent the delivery of drugs to the intended target. When the protein binds to the NPs, the NPs in turn change the secondary structure of the blood plasma protein. This can affect drug delivery and thrombosis. The different shapes of these NPs influence the binding affinity and adsorption of the blood plasma protein. The research analyzed the NPs for two variables, shape and hydrophobicity. We conducted this experiment to further research effects of hydrophobicity …
Investigating Impact Tolerance Of Sea Urchin Shell Structure For Aerospace Applications, Kristel Doong
Investigating Impact Tolerance Of Sea Urchin Shell Structure For Aerospace Applications, Kristel Doong
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Biomimicry takes inspiration from nature to create more resilient and innovative sustainable solutions to complex human problems. The structure of sea urchins can be used as a biological model to create lightweight, impact-resistant material that can be adapted to develop more structurally sound architecture in infrastructure. This report focuses on Echinocyamus pusillus since it primarily relies on its skeletal construction because it lacks collagen fibers within its sutures [1]. Since these bioinspired structures can be used to tolerate harsh environments where impact protection is essential, they can be utilized for many applications like high pressure structures in deep sea exploration …
Neural Stem Cell Metabolic Changes In The Presence Of Interferon-Gamma, Dylan Mckibben
Neural Stem Cell Metabolic Changes In The Presence Of Interferon-Gamma, Dylan Mckibben
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Spinal cord injury results in significant disability and health care costs due to an inability of the mature central nervous system to regenerate. One potential therapy would be implantation of neural stem cells to the injury site and stimulation of their differentiation to mature neurons. Previous work has shown that the cytokine interferon-gamma can promote this process; however, the signaling pathways induced in neural stem cells have not been well-defined. This proposal examines neural stem cell metabolic responses to signaling induced by interferon-gamma. Two questions will be answered: i) What specific metabolic pathway is activated to guide neural stem cell …

Living Together In Precarious Times: Covid-19 In The Philippines, Gideon Lasco
Development Studies Faculty Publications
The coronavirus pandemic has laid bare the necessity—for social scientists and the rest of the public alike—of an ecological; non-anthropocentric view of the world as humans grapple with microbes; surround themselves with plants; and engage with non-human animals in ways that range from abuse to affection. This chapter uses this multispecies perspective to reflect on the Philippine experience of COVID-19; offering illustrative examples; sketching tentative insights; and concluding with a research agenda for future work.

The Transactional Distance Theory posits that successful remote learning occurs when teachers decrease psychological or transactional gaps. Narrowing the transactional distance can be achieved through a balance of appropriate course structure and dialogue, fostering healthy student autonomy in the process. This paper describes the Emergency Remote Teaching experiences of faculty and students of the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. It examines these experiences in the context of the transactional distance framework. Findings show that a sudden shift to remote learning mandates greater student autonomy, which increases transactional distance. Because of this, efforts by faculty to increase student-teacher dialogue …

A Novel Application Of Dynamic Guided Navigation System In Immediate Implant Placement, Hsin-Yu Kuo, Po-Jan Kuo, Chi-Yu Lin, Tsung-Fu Hung, Hsien-Chung Chiu
Journal of Dental Sciences
Abstract Background/purpose Immediate placement in the esthetic zone has been a predictable treatment option. However, it requires the clinician to be experienced and knowledgeable about esthetic diagnosis, accurate 3-dimensional (3D) implant placement, and restoratively driven planning/placement. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate a novel workflow integrating dynamic navigation to immediate single-implant placement in the aesthetic zone. Materials and methods We included ten patients who required at least one implant in the esthetic area and were treated with post-extraction socket implant placement. Osteotomy and implant placement followed computer-assisted implant positioning and image-guided dynamic navigation. Treatment outcomes were implant success rates, surgical …

The Volume Of Proximal Bone Projection Can Determine The Osseous Contour After Immediate Implant Placement And Guided Bone Regeneration In Severe Labial Bony Deficiency, Monica Wang, Kazuyo Kuribayashi Sato, Lo-Lin Tsai, Wei Jen Chang, Yu-Chao Chang, Chih-Yuan Fang
Journal of Dental Sciences
Anterior immediate implant placement (IIP) has many biological and esthetic challenges, including inevitable soft and hard tissue loss after extraction. Previous literatures have discussed the facial bone architecture and defective socket classification. However, none of them discussed the depression of the cervical root area which can be seen frequently after IIP in type IIB and U-shaped defective sockets. In our limited experiences, we found that the labial interproximal bone edges of type IIB and U-shaped defect dominated the esthetic result after IIP. With more labial projection of the interproximal bone present, better esthetic result could be expected in the facial …

Abstract Background/purpose CD24 is a specific cell surface marker for undifferentiated dental stem cells from apical papilla (SCAPs) seen only during root development, before the tooth emerges through gum. But the comprehensive role of CD24 in the SCAPs is unclear. This study aims to clarify the exact roles of CD24 in SCAPs. Materials and methods SCAPs were divided into CD24 (+)-SCAPs (high percentage CD24) and CD24 (-)-SCAPs (low percentage CD24) via flow cytometry. The proliferation, migration and osteogenic/adipogenic differentiation of the two groups were detected, RT-PCR was performed to detect the expression of osteogenic/adipogenic related genes and thegene expression were …

The Role Of Dopamine Signaling In Prairie Vole Peer Relationships, Nicole S. Lee, Annaliese K. Beery
The Role Of Dopamine Signaling In Prairie Vole Peer Relationships, Nicole S. Lee, Annaliese K. Beery
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Dopamine signaling mediates the formation of some types of social relationships, including reproductive pair bonds in the socially monogamous prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster). In addition to these pair bonds with mates, prairie voles demonstrate selective preferences for familiar same-sex peers. The dependence of peer relationships on dopamine signaling has not been tested, and the mechanisms supporting these relationships may differ from those underlying pair bonds. We examined the effects of pharmacological manipulations of dopamine signaling on peer partner preference and socially conditioned place preference in female prairie voles. Haloperidol blockade of dopamine receptors at multiple doses did not alter selective …
