In the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) and triethylamine, 3-(trimethylsilyl)propargyl carboxylates undergo a one-pot alkylation-cyclization- desilylation reaction with ketones to produce 2-methylfurans. Alkylation at 0 °C in methylene chloride, followed by acid-catalyzed cyclization at room temperature, provides the furans in 52-86% yield. Cyclization and desilylation appear to be promoted by triflic acid generated in situ from the exposure of the reaction mixture to water upon completion of the initial substitution reaction.

Friedel–Crafts Addition Of Indoles To Nitrones Promoted By Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate, Zachary Z. Oracheff, Helen L. Xia, Christopher D. Poff, Scott E. Isaacson, C. Wade Downey
Chemistry Faculty Publications
N-alkylindoles undergo Friedel–Crafts addition to aryl and secondary alkyl nitrones in the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate and a trialkylamine to produce 3-(1- (silyloxyamino)alkyl)indoles. Spontaneous conversion to the bisindolyl(aryl)methanes, which is thermodynamically favored for nitrones derived from aromatic aldehydes, is suppressed under the reaction conditions. The silyloxyamino group can be deprotected with tetrabutylammonium fluoride to yield the hydroxylamine.

OBJECTIVES: Cuncaicha, a rockshelter site in the southern Peruvian Andes, has yielded archaeological evidence for human occupation at high elevation (4,480 masl) during the Terminal Pleistocene (12,500–11,200 cal BP), Early Holocene (9,500–9,000 cal BP), and later periods. One of the excavated human burials (Feature 15‐06), corresponding to a middle‐aged female dated to ~8,500 cal BP, exhibits skeletal osteoarthritic lesions previously proposed to reflect habitual loading and specialized crafting labor. Three small tools found in association with this burial are hypothesized to be associated with precise manual dexterity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we tested this functional hypothesis through the application of …
Sparse Forward-Backward Alignment For Sensitive Database Search With Small Memory And Time Requirements, David H. Rich
Sparse Forward-Backward Alignment For Sensitive Database Search With Small Memory And Time Requirements, David H. Rich
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Sequence annotation is typically performed by aligning an unlabeled sequence to a collection of known sequences, with the aim of identifying non-random similarities. Given the broad diversity of new sequences and the considerable scale of modern sequence databases, there is significant tension between the competing needs for sensitivity and speed, with multiple tools displacing the venerable BLAST software suite on one axis or another. In recent years, alignment based on profile hidden Markov models (pHMMs) and associated probabilistic inference methods have demonstrated increased sensitivity due in part to consideration of the ensemble of all possible alignments between a query and …

Cop9 Signalosome Component Csn-5 Promotes Accumulation And Function Of Stem Cell Regulators Fbf-1 And Fbf-2, Emily Osterli
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
RNA-binding proteins FBF-1 and FBF-2 (FBFs) are required for stem cell maintenance in C. elegans, although the mechanisms by which FBFs protein levels are regulated remain unknown. Using a yeast two-hybrid screen, we identified an interaction between both FBFs and CSN-5, a component of the COP9 (constitutive photomorphogenesis 9) signalosome. This highly conserved COP9 complex can affect protein stability through a range of mechanisms including deneddylation, deubiquitination, and phosphorylation (Wolf et al., 2003). Mapping protein-protein interactions between FBFs and CSN-5 suggested that the MPN (Mpr1/Pad1 N-terminal) metalloprotease domain of CSN-5 interacts with the RNA-binding domain of FBFs at physiologically …
Nitrogen Dynamics And Transport Along Flowpaths In A Rural Wetland-Stream Complex, Colton Kyro
Nitrogen Dynamics And Transport Along Flowpaths In A Rural Wetland-Stream Complex, Colton Kyro
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Human activities have doubled the rate of nitrogen inputs onto the landscape resulting in elevated nitrogen concentrations in our streams. Anthropogenically applied nitrogen is largely transported to stream networks via groundwater movement. Groundwater discharge occurs in distinct points along a stream but whose influences can often persist far beyond that area due to insufficient biogeochemical removal of imported nitrogen potentially causing alterations in community structure and precipitating large algae blooms. To understand the factors governing nitrogen abundance in a historical polluted stream, I used a mass-balance approach to quantify groundwater-surface water interaction and the magnitude of groundwater nitrogen input and …

Concomitant with an increase in the global illegal wildlife trade has been a substantial increase in research within traditional conservation-based sciences and conservation and green criminology. While the integration of criminological theories and methods into the wildlife conservation context has advanced our understanding of and practical responses to illegal wildlife trade, there remain discrepancies between the number of empirical vs. conceptual studies and a disproportionate focus on a few select theories, geographical contexts, and taxonomic groups. We present three understudied or novel applications of criminology and criminal justice research within the fields of fisheries, forestry, and wildlife conservation. First, we …

The Music Therapist’S Experience Of Flow During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Kaitlyn Upshaw
The Music Therapist’S Experience Of Flow During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Kaitlyn Upshaw
Theses & Dissertations
This study explored the music therapist’s lived experience of flow during a worldwide pandemic, within an improvisational music therapy approach. There is little to no literature about the concept of flow and how it relates to the music therapist’s lived experience, and none of which includes a worldwide traumatic event. Through a phenomenological investigation, the lived experiences of two music therapists who align with the improvisational music therapy approach were studied. A thematic analysis was conducted on data sources such as qualitative interview transcriptions and audio/video recordings of the interview. The following individual themes emerged from participant one: (a) flow …

Influence Of Different Drying Methods And Cold Storage Treatments On The Postharvestquality And Nutritional Properties Of P. Ostreatus Mushroom, Beyhan Ki̇bar
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study was conducted to determine the effects of different drying methods and cold storage treatments on the postharvest quality and nutritional properties of P. ostreatus mushroom. In the study, six different treatments including natural drying, oven drying (60 °C), microwave drying (450 W), storage at -18 °C, 4 °C and 10 °C were evaluated. After drying and cold storage, pH value, ash, protein, color, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity and element contents in mushroom samples were detected. According to findings obtained from the study, drying and cold storage treatments significantly (p < 0.01) affected the postharvest quality and nutritional composition of P. ostreatus. The protein content, ash content, L* color value, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity and essential mineral contents such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, zinc, and manganese of P. ostreatus decreased after drying and cold storage compared to the fresh mushroom sample. As a result, the best treatment was determined as storage at 4 °C in terms of protection the quality and nutritional value of P. ostreatus during postharvest storage. In addition, natural drying was the most effective treatment among drying methods, and it can be used successfully for longterm storage of this mushroom. However, it was concluded that microwave drying method was not suitable for the preservation of P. ostreatus since it caused significant nutrient and quality losses. The results of the present study will provide useful information about postharvest preservation and processing of P. ostreatus for researchers working on this issue.

In vegetable growing, seedling is the foundation of a successful growing. Use of commercial seedlings have become more popular in recent years due to effective use of labour and land and economic concerns. It is aimed to produce small vigorous seedlings with sufficient roots and free of diseases and pests in the commercial seedling enterprises. Although certain cultural applications are used for production of small-sized seedlings, growth retarding chemicals are generally preferred due to their effective results. There are some concerns regarding on-going retarding effects of such chemicals under field conditions. In this study, it is aimed to remove the …
Being In Centro: The Anthropology Of Schelling's Human Freedom, Michael Vater
Being In Centro: The Anthropology Of Schelling's Human Freedom, Michael Vater
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
Schelling presents the 1809 freedom essay as the idealistic flowering of a vision of system he always held. He is not disingenuous but somewhat perplexing in claiming that the system always was complete in nuce, even though not expounded completely. Tilliette captured the ambiguity nicely in designating Schelling’s oeuvre «une philosophie en devenir». This mid-career essay must be read backwards to the earliest essays republished with it—especially to their views of willing, freedom, and moral responsibility—and simultaneously forward to the late philosophy’s analysis of God’s freedom as freedom from being, even necessary being. I locate Freedom’s …

Influences On Conifer Drought Responses In Northern California, Wallis L. Robinson
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
California is experiencing increasingly severe and prolonged droughts, which are contributing to changes in tree stress and forest mortality. Many factors affect a tree’s drought response, including competition, climate, and site and tree characteristics. Northern California provides a suitable venue to explore the effects of these factors, as it spans a variety of site conditions and includes habitat for conifers with different adaptations and requirements. This study used annual 13C discrimination and growth metrics to assess differences in drought resistance and resilience in conifers adapted to coastal and montane ranges at both wet and dry sites, as well as …
Effect Of Whole Fruit Based Anthocyanins On Systemic Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, And Waist Circumference In Women, Anastasiya Yudinova
Effect Of Whole Fruit Based Anthocyanins On Systemic Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, And Waist Circumference In Women, Anastasiya Yudinova
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Cardiometabolic disease (CMD) remains the leading cause of death nationally. Intra-abdominal fat (IAF) is one of the primary risk factors for CMD. Women are particularly vulnerable to developing CMD due to hormonal changes during and after menopause that increase IAF. Excess IAF has deleterious effects on the body, increasing systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, leading to CMD. This systematic review and meta-analyses examined current research related to consumption of whole foods high in anthocyanins, their impact on oxidative stress and inflammation, and the medium and amount of anthocyanin delivery that yields the most benefits to women at risk for CMD. …

Elucidating factors influencing home range size are fundamental relationships that can be described for any wildlife species, particularly those of conservation concern. The Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) is an endangered sub-species of the gray wolf whose home range patterns have not yet been studied. I estimated home range sizes for 22 Mexican wolf packs using Brownian Bridge Movement Models (95% UD). Generalized linear mixed effect models were used to evaluate environmental and social variables across four timeframes. Annual home range size was inversely related to human density and tree cover. During the denning period, home range …
Biomass-Derived Electrode Materials And Sustainable Processes For Supercapacitors, Katelyn M. Shell
Biomass-Derived Electrode Materials And Sustainable Processes For Supercapacitors, Katelyn M. Shell
Theses and Dissertations
Biomass is one of the most abundant natural resources and has been used as a source of energy for thousands of years. Biomass as a precursor for energy storage materials is still relatively novel and faces several obstacles before becoming commonly used in today’s electrical devices. Currently, energy storage devices, such as batteries, capacitors, and supercapacitors, utilize petroleum-derived graphitic carbons for anodes, generating a need for more sustainable materials. Biomass, as a carbon-rich source for electrode materials, presents a viable and economically feasible alternative due to the prevalent lignocellulosic compounds: lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. Preliminary studies on the solid residues …

Effects Of Large Wood Restoration On Coho Salmon In A Northern California Watershed: A Before-After-Control-Impact Experiment, Natalie B. Okun
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Substantial time, money, and effort are invested in river and stream restoration projects to aid in the recovery of imperiled salmonid populations, but there is little evidence that these efforts have had lasting positive impacts on juvenile fish growth and survival. To assess the effectiveness of large woody debris (LWD) restoration, which is one of the most common restoration practices, I evaluated the growth and survival response of endangered Central California Coast coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in a paired watershed before-after impact-control (BACI) study. To determine if LWD supplementation influenced coho salmon growth and survival, two neighboring, similar …
Post-Fire Effects In Chaparral And Oak Ecosystems Of Northern California, Abigail M. Jones
Post-Fire Effects In Chaparral And Oak Ecosystems Of Northern California, Abigail M. Jones
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The issue of wildfires, hazard fuels management, and post-fire tree mortality has become an increasingly common topic in the western United States. This thesis is composed of two studies, with the first study, Chapter 1, examining fuel treatment effectiveness and the second study, Chapter 2, striving to characterize post-fire mortality in oaks.
Prior to wildfire, fuel reduction projects may take place to decrease the likelihood of high severity fire around human infrastructure and communities. Within California’s chaparral ecosystems, common treatment types include hand-thinning, prescribed burning, mechanical mastication, and mechanical mastication followed with prescribed burning. Because chaparral has a longer historical …

Language models employ a very large number of trainable parameters. Despite being highly overparameterized, these networks often achieve good out-of-sample test performance on the original task and easily fine-tune to related tasks. Recent observations involving, for example, intrinsic dimension of the objective landscape and the lottery ticket hypothesis, indicate that often training actively involves only a small fraction of the parameter space. Thus, a question remains how large a parameter space needs to be in the first place — the evidence from recent work on model compression, parameter sharing, factorized representations, and knowledge distillation increasingly shows that models can be …
