Functional Analysis Of Virulence In Vibrio Coralliilyticus Re22 And Probiotic Mechanisms Of Phaeobacter Inhibens S4, Christian W. Schuttert
Open Access Dissertations
Infections by pathogenic marine bacteria present a major problem for both the shellfish and finfish aquaculture industries, resulting in severe disease and high mortality. Pathogen infection seriously affect aquaculture production, and cause significant economic loss. Marine pathogens like Vibrio coralliilyticus frequently cause disease in a variety of shellfish. The use of antibiotics in large-scale aquaculture settings leads to the development, and potential transfer, of antibiotic resistance. In order to mitigate this emerging threat, an understanding of pathogenic mechanisms of infection and novel preventative strategies, such as probiotic treatment, is paramount for understanding and preventing future disease.

Judicial Discretion Is Advised: The Lack Of Discretionary Appointments Of Counsel For Children In Washington State Dependency Proceedings, Marisa Forthun
Judicial Discretion Is Advised: The Lack Of Discretionary Appointments Of Counsel For Children In Washington State Dependency Proceedings, Marisa Forthun
Washington Law Review Online
State agencies initiate dependency proceedings when a child is alleged, often due to parental neglect or abuse, to be a dependent of the state. The state must intervene “[w]hen parents do not comply with [Child Protective Services] requirements, or when the state believes the child is at too great a risk to remain at home even if parents were to comply with services.” Dependency proceedings usually take place in juvenile courts and involve the local state agency, the parents, and the child. After the government files a petition alleging circumstances of neglect or abuse, “[t]he court issues temporary orders regarding …

Effect Of Chronic Pain On Prospective Memory Performance, Alexander Joseph Kuka
Effect Of Chronic Pain On Prospective Memory Performance, Alexander Joseph Kuka
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chronic pain is among the most widespread and disabling conditions worldwide. In the United States, approximately 50 million people suffer from chronic pain, and nearly half that number experience daily chronic pain. Diagnostic testing, treatments, and operations related to chronic pain cost Americans over $600 billion annually. Prospective memory, the process by which people remember to perform an action in the future after a delay, appears to be affected by the experience of pain, especially when a prospective memory task is more cognitively demanding. While self-report studies of individuals with chronic pain suggest that pain adversely affects both their retrospective …

Childhood nutrition establishes consumption norms that affect an individual’s health over the course of their lives. However, early nutrition interventions to establish such norms are uncommon owing to the various inefficiencies associated with current methods of measuring childhood nutrition. Here, we present an IoT measuring device, called the SensiTray, which accurately tracks mealtime intake in a child-friendly and cost-effective fashion. Principal technologies underlying the SensiTray (including mass-sensing technologies, microcontrollers) are identified and analyzed, along with other design choices. Operation of the SensiTray is explained with special attention given to SensiTray software peripherals and algorithms. Preliminary testing consisted of static and …

To improve bioavailability and stability of hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds, nanoemulsions are good alternatives as delivery systems because of their nontoxic and nonirritant nature. Glutathione (GSH) suffers from low stability in water, where its encapsulation in nanoemulsions is a powerful strategy to its stability in aqueous systems. The aim of this study was to obtain nanoemulsions from the hydrophobic/hydrophilic contents of N. sativa seed oil so as to improve GSH stability along with bioavailability of N. sativa seed oil. Then, the prepared nanoemulsions were tested for in vitro hepatoprotective activity against ethanol toxicity. To the best of our knowledge, there …

Regarding the abundant use of metals for different purposes, it becomes more critical from various scientific and technologi¬cal perspectives to discover novel agents as selective probes for the detection of specific metals. In our previous studies, we have shown that aqueous solutions of natural urolithins (i.e., hydroxyl-substituted benzo[c]chromen-6-one derivatives) are selective Iron (III) sen¬sors in fluorescence assays. In this study, we have extrapolated these findings to another coumarine compound (i.e., 3-Hydroxy-7,8,9,10- tetrahydro-6H-benzo[c]chromen-6-one) and compared the selective metal binding properties with Urolithin B (i.e., 3-Hydroxy-6H-benzo[c]chromen-6-one). Following the synthesis and structure identification studies, the fluorometric studies pointed out that the lactam group …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Platinum (Pt) loaded activated carbons (ACs) were synthesized by the thermal decomposition of platinum (II) acetylacetonate (Pt(acac)2) over chemically activated glucose-based biochar. The effect of Pt loading on surface area, pore characteristics, surface chemistry, chemical structure, and surface morphology were determined by various techniques. XPS studies proved the presence of metallic Pt0 on the AC surface. The graphitization degree of Pt loaded ACs were increased with the loaded Pt0 amount. The electrochemical performance of the Pt-loaded ACs (Pt@AC) was determined not only by the conventional three-electrode system but also by packaged supercapacitors in CR2032 casings. The capacitive performance of Pt@AC …

A General Multipatch Model Of Ebola Dynamics, Jorge Rebaza
A General Multipatch Model Of Ebola Dynamics, Jorge Rebaza
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
A model for the transmission dynamics of Ebola virus in a multipatch network setting is studied. The model considers the contribution to the dynamics by people who are susceptible, infectious, isolated, deceased but still infectious and not yet buried, as well as the dynamics of the pathogen at interacting nodes or patches. Humans can move between patches carrying the disease to any patch in a region of n communities (patches). Both direct and indirect transmission are accounted for in this model. Matrix and graph-theoretic methods and some combinatorial identities are used to construct appropriate Lyapunov functions to establish global stability …

Towards Automatic Detection And Quantification Of Mildew On Grape Leaf Disks, Razib Iqbal, Kyle Sargent, László G. Kovács
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Downy and powdery mildews are the most serious diseases of the grapevine. A sustainable way to control these pathogens is the breeding and deployment of resistant grape cultivars. For breeding efforts to be effective, accurate quantification of the resistance phenotype is essential. In this paper, we present a computer-based image recognition, processing, and analysis technique for enhancing the detection and quantification of Plasmopara viticola and Erysiphe necator the causal agents of downy and powdery mildew, respectively. We propose a multi-step approach that utilizes background removal and Hue-Saturation-Value (HSV) masking as opposed to multi-faceted color channel breakdowns, photo texture evaluations, or …

Global Stability Analysis Of A General Model Of Zika Virus, K. Bessey, M. Mavis, Jorge Rebaza, J. Zhang
College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Mathematical models of Zika virus dynamics are relatively new, and they mostly focus on either vector and horizontal, or vector and vertical transmission only. In this work,we first revisit a recent model that considers vector and vertical transmission, and we provide an alternative proof on the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium point. Then, a new and general model is presented which includes vector, horizontal and vertical transmission. For this new model, existence of both a disease-free and an endemic equilibrium is studied. Using matrix and graph-theoretic methods, appropriate Lyapunov functions are constructed and results on the global stability properties …
