SELF-EFFICACY AND SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH IN WOMEN WITH CYSTIC FIBROSIS: A MIXED METHODS STUDY JANET BROWN DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN NURSING ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-limiting genetic disorder among Caucasians. There are approximately 30,000 individuals with CF in the United States and over 70,000 worldwide, with approximately 1,000 new cases diagnosed globally each year. In other chronic diseases, a positive relationship between self-efficacy and behavior has been identified. Self-efficacy may be a factor related to behaviors, including underutilization of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care services for women with CF.METHODS: Self-efficacy and utilization of …
The Function Of Tgfβr3 (Betaglycan) In The Differentiation And Proliferation Of T Cells, Samuel Duesman
The Function Of Tgfβr3 (Betaglycan) In The Differentiation And Proliferation Of T Cells, Samuel Duesman
All ETDs from UAB
TGFβR3 is a membrane bound co-receptor to many members of the TGFβ superfamily of ligands and is broadly expressed in the human body. TGFβR3 is known to modulate immune system function, but its exact role is at this time poorly understood. Work by Aleman-Muench et al., (2012) suggests that TGFβR3 regulates T cell development in the thymus. In order to further investigate the role of TGFβR3 in the immune system our lab developed a mouse which lacks TGFβR3 selectively in mature T cells. The contribution of TGFβR3 on in vivo activation and differentiation of T cells was investigated by utilizing …
Stress, Inflammation, And Mood: A Role For Leptin?, Kathleen Hodgin
Stress, Inflammation, And Mood: A Role For Leptin?, Kathleen Hodgin
All ETDs from UAB
Prior research has suggested a possible role for the proinflammatory adipokine leptin in depression. Leptin has also been associated with stress, a known predictor of depression. The purpose of this project was to investigate associations between stress, leptin, and depressed mood. We used data from a larger observational study that collected daily levels of plasma leptin and self-reported stress and depressed mood from 55 women over 25 days. Women with and without chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) were included. We hypothesized the following: increased stress would be associated with both worsened mood and higher leptin, and that leptin would be positively …

Laser Spectroscopy, Amplification, And Laser Properties Of Fe:Znse Mid-Ir Gain Media Under Er:Yag Laser Excitation, Krishna Karki
All ETDs from UAB
Many organic molecules exhibit strong and narrow absorption in the middle infrared (mid-IR) 2-8 μm and long-wavelength-infrared (LWIR) 8-20 μm spectral ranges. Hence, this infrared laser radiation is of interest for spectroscopy, remote sensing of atmospheric constituents, oil prospecting, as well as the number of applications such as free-space optical communication, laser surgical and dental treatment, and many defense-related applications. Transition metal (TM) doped II-VI semiconductors exhibit highly favorable spectroscopic properties for many mid-IR laser applications. Among these materials the most significant results have been obtained with the use of Fe:ZnSe crystals because of their unique properties such as broad …

Parental School Involvement On Physical Activity And Screen Time Among Middle And High School Students, Joseph Greer, Kiran Thapa, Jessica Mcnulty, Janani R. Thapa
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: High levels of sedentary activity and low levels of physical activity have led to an increase in childhood obesity. A reduction of sedentary behavior and the promotion of an active lifestyle positively impacts weight status of children. A child may modify their behavior through direct interventions from their parents, such as enforcement of rules or guided activities, or through broad interventions, by expressing their values and modeling behavior. Current research does not establish if broad or specific parental involvement has a greater effect on healthy behavior. Our group sought to support existing evidence that parental involvement directly impacts behavior …
Exploring Student Engagement For Diverse Student Populations: A Case Study Examining Institutional Logics Of Student Affairs Middle Management Leaders, Frangelo Rominque Ayran
Exploring Student Engagement For Diverse Student Populations: A Case Study Examining Institutional Logics Of Student Affairs Middle Management Leaders, Frangelo Rominque Ayran
Doctoral Dissertations
This study explores the institutional logics that student affairs middle managers employ to facilitate student engagement programs and resources intended for more diverse student populations. While the positive effects of student involvement and student engagement are both widely documented, disparities between White students and students of color in their rates of engagement continue to illustrate that the effects of student engagement opportunities as forms of high impact practices are dependent upon the racial and ethnic background of students. Higher education institutions faced with the widening divide between low-income students of color in their retention, degree attainment, and engagement rates not …

An Apple Extract Beverage Combined With Caffeine Can Improve Alertness, Mental Fatigue, And Information Processing Speed, Christie L. Ward-Ritacco, Alissa R. Wilson, Patrick J. O'Connor
Kinesiology Faculty Publications
The psychological effects of low-dose caffeine combined with polyphenols from apples have rarely been explored scientifically yet synergistic effects are plausible. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over experiment was used to test the psychological effects of apple extract beverages combined with 10, 20, 37.5, and 75 mg caffeine. Comparisons were made to both a placebo drink that was artificially sweetened and colored to mimic the test beverages and a positive control drink with 75 mg caffeine but without apple extract. Compared to placebo, it was hypothesized that dose-dependent improvements in cognitive performance, mood, and motivation would be realized after consuming the …

Functional Plasticity In Oyster Gut Microbiomes Along A Eutrophication Gradient In An Urbanized Estuary, Rebecca J. Stevick, Anton F. Post, Marta Gomez-Chiarri
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
Background
Oysters in coastal environments are subject to fluctuating environmental conditions that may impact the ecosystem services they provide. Oyster-associated microbiomes are responsible for some of these services, particularly nutrient cycling in benthic habitats. The effects of climate change on host-associated microbiome composition are well-known, but functional changes and how they may impact host physiology and ecosystem functioning are poorly characterized. We investigated how environmental parameters affect oyster-associated microbial community structure and function along a trophic gradient in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. Adult eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, gut and seawater samples were collected at 5 sites along this estuarine …

The pressure on scarce freshwater resources from intensifying human activity is rising across the globe. This study presents the case of Jatiluhur—Indonesia's largest reservoir, where unregulated aquaculture expansion has contributed to environmental degradation and associated conflicts with other water-users. Aiming to identify a strategy to improve the sustainability of cage aquaculture within Jatiluhur reservoir and other freshwater bodies facing similar challenges, this study consisted of an initial analysis of time bound satellite images of the reservoir and a systematic survey of 112 aquaculture farms. The results revealed that, with more than 45 000 production units in 2020, more than half …

Identifying Hotspots For Spatial Management Of The Indonesian Deep-Slope Demersal Fishery, Elle Wibisono, Gavino Puggioni, Edwison Firmana, Austin T. Humphries
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
The Indonesian deep-slope demersal fishery targets mostly snappers and groupers and is vital for the wellbeing of millions of people. More than 100 species are captured at depths of 50–500 m along shelves and seamounts using mostly droplines and bottom longlines. The main target species are Pristipomoides multidens, Pristipomoides filamentosus, Pristipomoides typus, Atrobucca brevis, Epinephelus areolatus, and Lutjanus malabaricus. The fleet in this fishery is predominantly unlicensed small-scale (1–10 gross ton) vessels. The fishery is unmanaged and lacks data that would allow policymakers to formulate sustainable management strategies. Here, we use fisheries-dependent data on …

Assessing Indicators And Limitations Of Food Security Objectives In Coral Reef Restoration, Jessica Vandenberg, Austin Humphries, Carlos Garcia-Quijanoa, Amelia Moore, Richard Pollnac, Suparman Abdullah
Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications
Coral reef restoration is often presented as a marine conservation solution that provides 'win-win' outcomes. However, most studies on reef restoration have focused on the biological success, while little is known about whether social objectives are ever achieved. This study investigates a reef restoration initiative in the Spermonde archipelago, Indonesia, where food security was initially presented as an intended social outcome. We utilised an ethnographic mixed-methods approach to investigate: 1) perceived sociocultural benefits of coral restoration to the local community; 2) impacts of reef restoration on local food security; and 3) local sociocultural barriers and limitations of reef restoration as …
Closing The Health Justice Gap: Access To Justice In Furtherance Of Health Equity, Yael Cannon
Closing The Health Justice Gap: Access To Justice In Furtherance Of Health Equity, Yael Cannon
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
A massive civil “justice gap” plagues the United States. Every day, low-income Americans—and disproportionately people of color—go without the legal information and representation they need to enforce their rights. This can cost them their homes, jobs, food security, or children. But unmet civil legal needs in housing, employment, and public benefits, for example, are not simply injustices—they are well-documented drivers of poor health, or social determinants of health. Those marginalized by virtue of both race and socioeconomic status are particularly harmed by inaccessibility to justice and also by chronic health conditions and lower life expectancy. When a tenant walks into …

Evaluation Of The Maxillary Skeletal Transverse Dimension In Untreated Orthodontic Patients, Andrew J. Ply
Evaluation Of The Maxillary Skeletal Transverse Dimension In Untreated Orthodontic Patients, Andrew J. Ply
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Currently, there is no consensus in the orthodontic or OMFS literature regarding diagnosis of transverse dental arch discrepancies and to what extent discrepancies in underlying maxillary and mandibular transverse jaw dimensions are an etiology. In addition, there is an absence of discussion regarding possible differences in maxillary anterior versus posterior transverse jaw discrepancies. The purpose of this investigation was to: 1) evaluate a dental cast versus CBCT method for diagnosing skeletal transverse discrepancies, 2) assess whether dental cast or CBCT determined posterior transverse discrepancies differ from anterior transverse discrepancies, and 3) assess if any differences exist in skeletal transverse …

Porphyromonas Gingivalis Targets Ectonucleotidase-Cd73 And Il-6/Stat3 Pathway For Intracellular Survival In Human Epithelial Cells, Jaden Sophien Lee
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g) is an important opportunistic pathogen and etiological agent in chronic periodontitis. As a major colonizer of oral mucosa, P.g uses multiple mechanisms to survive in human gingival epithelial cells (GECs), key initial defense cells of the oral cavity. Cell surface nucleotide-metabolizing enzyme, ectonucleotidase-CD73, has emerged as a central component of the homeostatic-machinery that counterbalances the danger-molecule, ATP-driven proinflammatory response in immune cells. While the importance of CD73 in microbial host fitness and symbiosis is gradually being unraveled, there remains a significant gap in knowledge of CD73 and its role in epithelial cells. Upon invasion of GECs, P.g …

Aesthetic Rehabilitation In A Patient With Skeletal Mandibular Deficiency And Open Bite: Journey From Splinted Metalloceramic Prosthesis To All-Ceramic Crowns, Rizwan Nazeer, Shizrah Jamal, Farhan Raza Khan
Section of Dental-Oral Maxillofacial Surgery
This case report is of a 31-year-old female who presented with splinted and faulty metalloceramic prosthesis on maxillary anterior teeth, which was responsible for localised periodontal disease and poor aesthetics. At multiple sites the ceramic had chipped off and the prosthesis colour did not match with the adjacent healthy teeth. A multidisciplinary approach of endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics was employed for this case. The treatment plan consisted of removing the faulty prosthesis, endodontic retreatment of inadequately root-treated teeth and endodontics in the other coronally prepared abutment teeth. Crown lengthening surgery was performed for the correction of periodontal pockets and high …

Locomotion generates adventitious sounds which enable detection and localization of predators and prey. Such sounds contain brisk changes or transients in amplitude. We investigated the hypothesis that ill-understood temporal specializations in binaural circuits subserve lateralization of such sound transients, based on different time of arrival at the ears (interaural time differences, ITDs). We find that Lateral Superior Olive (LSO) neurons show exquisite ITD-sensitivity, reflecting extreme precision and reliability of excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials, in contrast to Medial Superior Olive neurons, traditionally viewed as the ultimate ITD-detectors. In vivo, inhibition blocks LSO excitation over an extremely short window, which, in …
