So Bitter, So Böse: Samy Deluxe Defines A Black German Identity Through Hip-Hop, Michaela N. Culley
So Bitter, So Böse: Samy Deluxe Defines A Black German Identity Through Hip-Hop, Michaela N. Culley
Theses and Dissertations--Modern and Classical Languages, Literature and Cultures
Samy Deluxe, a Black German Hip-Hop artist from Hamburg, Germany, has become a staple in the German Hip-Hop realm. Since the start of his career, he has tried to replicate the genre that originated in the Bronx and apply it to a German setting. Samy Deluxe raps about with social criticism, German political issues, and racism. Not only has Samy Deluxe established a discography of politically driven music, but he has also used his platform to establish a Black German identity for himself in a German context.
This has not been an easy feat, due to issues within German society …

Potential Production Of Theranostic Boron Nitride Nanotubes (64cu-Bnnts) Radiolabeled By Neutron Capture, Wellington Marcos Silva, Helio Ribeiro, Jaime Taha-Tijerina
Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
In this work, the radioisotope 64Cu was obtained from copper (II) chloride dihydrate in a nuclear research reactor by neutron capture, (63Cu(n, )64Cu), and incorporated into boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) using a solvothermal process. The produced 64Cu-BNNTs were analyzed by TEM, MEV, FTIR, XDR, XPS and gamma spectrometry, with which it was possible to observe the formation of64Cu nanoparticles, with sizes of up to 16 nm, distributed through nanotubes. The synthesized of 64Cu nanostructures showed a pure photoemission peak of 511 keV, which is characteristic of gamma radiation. This type of emission is desirable for Photon Emission Tomography (PET scan) …
Laughter As Strategies In Business Communication Between Thai And Burmese Professionals, Tabtip Kanchanapoomi, Wannapa Trakulkasemsuk
Laughter As Strategies In Business Communication Between Thai And Burmese Professionals, Tabtip Kanchanapoomi, Wannapa Trakulkasemsuk
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Laughter is not just an element in human communication that signifies happiness and enjoyment, it can be used as a communication strategy to lubricate successful interaction including business communication. Nonetheless, not many studies have paid attention to laughter in business communication. Therefore, this paper sheds light on how Thai and Burmese participants used laughter in a restaurant and in a business meeting in Yangon, Myanmar. Audio data was collected together with various pieces of ethnographic data, for example, participant observations reported from extensive field notes, semi-structured interviews and audio recordings. The analysis was based on the classification of laughter adopted …
An Examination Of Middle School Students’ Attitudes Toward Science, Michelle L. Schpakow, Jillian L. Wendt, Kelly Paynter
An Examination Of Middle School Students’ Attitudes Toward Science, Michelle L. Schpakow, Jillian L. Wendt, Kelly Paynter
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
For more than 40 years, researchers have been studying the persistent underrepresentation of women in science. Today, the gender gap has narrowed in some, but not all, disciplines of science. To better understand the impetus of this continuing problem, the attitudes of middle school students toward science were examined using a causal-comparative design based on biological sex across four attitude constructs: attitudes toward school science, desire to become a scientist, value of science to society, and perceptions of scientists. A sample of 450 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade science students located in suburban, central New Jersey responded to Likert-type items on …

How To Get Away With Immunity: Fda's Emergency Use Authorization Scheme And Prep Act Liability Protection In The Context Of Covid-19, William Chanes Martinez
Loyola Consumer Law Review
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plays a vital role in our country's response to biological agents that threaten public health and safety. On December 31, 2019, officials in Wuhan, China confirmed dozens of cases of pneumonia caused by an unknown pathogen. Chinese officials later identified that pathogen as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARSCoV- 2), which causes the disease COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a perfect storm for unprecedented and litigation-provoking health harms in the United States. As the country's death toll rises and states seek to reopen, many Americans are assessing their COVID- 19-related health status …

A Baraminological Analysis Of The Landfowl (Aves: Galliformes), Timothy R. Brophy
A Baraminological Analysis Of The Landfowl (Aves: Galliformes), Timothy R. Brophy
Faculty Publications and Presentations
We performed a baraminological analysis on 60 extant landfowl taxa (Aves: Galliformes) using 102 morphological characters. Both baraminic distance correlation analysis and multidimensional scaling suggest the possibility of four holobaramins within the landfowl order: Megapodiidae, Cracidae, Numididae, and the remaining Phasianoidea. Hybridization, however, connects three of these holobaramins (six of the currently recognized families). Considering both sets of evidence, we conclude that the landfowl are composed of two holobaramins: Megapodiidae and [Phasianoidea + Cracidae]. The five currently recognized families in the superfamily Phasianoidea have, until recently, been considered subfamilies in a more broadly conceived family Phasianidae, so it should not …

‘Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast’: Use And Abuse Of Culture In International Strategy Research, Stephen Tallman, Jay Valerian Wu
‘Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast’: Use And Abuse Of Culture In International Strategy Research, Stephen Tallman, Jay Valerian Wu
Management Faculty Publications
International strategy, as a subfield of strategic management, has too often settled for simplistic and rote approaches to bringing the international setting into the analysis of cross-border strategies and their consequences. We examine the application of national culture in international strategy research as perhaps the most common expression of locational awareness. We begin by considering the many critical assessments of current theoretical and empirical research on the culture-strategy interaction. We summarize multiple meta-analytic studies and examine a sample of empirical articles from the past 40 years more closely to offer our own criticism of the theories, settings, data, models, and …
From Protecting Water Quality To Protecting States’ Rights: Fifty Years Of Supreme Court Clean Water Act Statutory Interpretation, Stephen M. Johnson
From Protecting Water Quality To Protecting States’ Rights: Fifty Years Of Supreme Court Clean Water Act Statutory Interpretation, Stephen M. Johnson
Articles
In 1972, a bipartisan Congress enacted the Clean Water Act “to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Nation’s waters.” Almost fifty years have passed since Congress enacted the law, and during that time, the Supreme Court has played a significant role in the administration and evolution of the law. Since the dawn of the environmental era in the 1970s, the Supreme Court has heard more cases involving the Clean Water Act than any other environmental law. However, the manner in which the Court has analyzed the law has changed substantially over the last half century. …
Divide And Slaughter: Bridging The Gap Between Animal Rights And Racial Justice Through An Analysis Of The Link Between Slaughterhouses And Domestic Violence, Kailey Mcneal
Pitzer Senior Theses
This thesis concerns the injustices present in industrial animal agriculture in the United States, domestic violence, and their disproportionate impact on marginalized communities. Despite the work of social movements centered around domestic violence and the slaughterhouse, the state of both continues to worsen, particularly for communities of color. My research seeks to uncover what factors preclude the efficacy of these movements. A qualitative analysis of the labor advocacy and animal rights movements in the slaughterhouse and the domestic violence advocacy movement suggests that the current disparate framings of these injustices and a lack of attention to race contribute to the …
The Implications Of Tear Gas Use On Endocrine Function, Sylvie Wilson
The Implications Of Tear Gas Use On Endocrine Function, Sylvie Wilson
Pitzer Senior Theses
Tear gas is currently used as a riot control agent by the police and federal agents of the government. Though it has been banned in many countries, its use remains legal in the United States. Discussion surrounding the use of tear gas in the United States has increased in the news and social justice discourse throughout 2020 as a result of the Black Lives Matter protests that have swept across the nation. City, state, and federal government officials in multiple cities have attempted to quell protests using tear gas via police and federal agents. Many individuals with ovaries who had …
Why Do You Wear A Mask? Children’S Conceptualizations Of Covid-19 And Contagion Avoidance Behaviors, Emily Hillman
Why Do You Wear A Mask? Children’S Conceptualizations Of Covid-19 And Contagion Avoidance Behaviors, Emily Hillman
Scripps Senior Theses
With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a need has emerged for psychological research on children’s understanding of infectious disease transmission. However, little existing research examines the link between children’s cognitive reasoning about illness and their subsequent behaviors regarding its transmissibility. This study will examine children’s conceptualizations of contagious illnesses such as COVID-19 and their subsequent contagion avoidance. A mixed methods approach will be used to establish the content of children’s conceptualizations of contagion and level of causal reasoning related to illness transmission. Dyads will be constructed comprising 4-12-year-old children and their parents. It is expected that parental contagion avoidance …
Role Of Fibcd1 In Pulmonary Aspergillus Fumigatus Infection, Shreya Bhattacharya
Role Of Fibcd1 In Pulmonary Aspergillus Fumigatus Infection, Shreya Bhattacharya
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous airborne fungus which is associated with the development of various pulmonary diseases, like fatal invasive aspergillosis (IA), particularly in immunocompromised patients. FIBrinogen C Domain containing 1 (FIBCD1) is a tetrameric receptor that binds chitin, is found in human lung epithelium, and modulates lung epithelial inflammatory responses to A. fumigatus cell wall polysaccharides. However, little is known about the role of FIBCD1 in the context of fungal infection, especially the murine pulmonary model of IA. Not much is known about the role of FIBCD1 in other fungal infection models like systemic fungal infection, where the infection …
The Relationship Between Parental Attachment Styles And Acting-With-Awareness, Brandi Caudill
The Relationship Between Parental Attachment Styles And Acting-With-Awareness, Brandi Caudill
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Parental attachment impacts multiple life outcomes and abilities from infancy to adulthood, including mindfulness. Acting-with-awareness is one facet of mindfulness involving an individuals ability to attend to the present moment. Independently, both attachment-based strategies and mindfulness-based strategies are incorporated into therapy; however, therapeutic strategies considering both constructs are limited. Further, research investigating the relationship between parental attachment and acting-with-awareness in college-aged individuals is narrow. The present study investigated three research questions: (a) what the factor structure of modified The Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised (ECR-R) for parental attachment is; (b) if there are significant differences across parental attachment styles based on …
Does Nonattachment Predict Levels Of Experimentally Induced Social Stress And Cognitive Features Of Social Anxiety Disorder? Possible Implications For Future Treatment, Anna Gernand
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by a fear of negative evaluation that often results in behaviors such as avoidance intended to mitigate the risk of making a negative impression on others or making their social anxiety known (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Engaging in self-focused attention is a covert manner in which individuals with SAD can protectively monitor their speech, behavior, and physical symptoms of anxiety (e.g., blushing) in an effort to compensate for their perceived susceptibility to negative evaluation (Clark & Wells, 1995). Self-focused attention in social anxiety has been widely studied and found to elevate rather than alleviate …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Research on Kilauea and O‐yama Volcanoes has shown that microbial communities and their activities undergo major shifts in response to plant colonization and that molyb-denum‐dependent CO oxidizers (Mo‐COX) and their activities vary with vegetation and deposit age. Results reported here reveal that anaerobic CO oxidation attributed to nickel‐dependent CO oxidizers (Ni‐COX) also occurs in volcanic deposits that encompass different developmental stages. Ni‐COX at three distinct sites responded rapidly to anoxia and oxidized CO from initial concentrations of about 10 ppm to sub‐atmospheric levels. CO was also actively consumed at initial 25% …

© 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Rationale: A two-component matrix of 2-nitrophloroglucinol (2-NPG) and silica nanoparticles was used for matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry imaging of high-charge-state biomolecules in tissue. Potential advantages include increased effective mass range and efficiency of fragmentation. Methods: A mixture of 2-NPG matrix and silica nanoparticles was applied to cyrosectioned 10 μm thick mouse brain tissue. The mixture was pipetted onto the tissue for profiling and sprayed for tissue imaging. MALDI images were obtained under high vacuum in a commercial time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Results: The combined 2-NPG and nanoparticle matrix produced highly charged …
The Transcendental Foundation Of Kant's Cosmopolitanism, Daniel J. Ellison
The Transcendental Foundation Of Kant's Cosmopolitanism, Daniel J. Ellison
Honors Theses
Scholarship on Kant’s philosophy of history has insufficiently considered its place in the larger system of transcendental idealism. In this project, I argue that Kant’s guarantee of progress in history is grounded in his universal characterizations of human nature, which he makes both explicitly, as with the notion of “unsociable sociability” put forth in “Idea for a Universal History from a Cosmopolitan Perspective,” and implicitly, as with what I term a responsiveness to reasons. These characterizations are grounded, I claim, in an attribution of reason which is always already achieved to the constitution of human beings, which emerges out of …
Gold Mining Districts And Path Dependence, Jason T. Dunn
Gold Mining Districts And Path Dependence, Jason T. Dunn
Honors Theses
This paper applies quantitative spatial analysis to the long-term impact of Western gold rushes, studying the effect of 19th century US mineral districts on modern (2010) population density, as a proxy for long-term economic growth. OLS regression estimates show positive effects for areas adjacent to historic mining districts. Census tracts within 15 miles of a mineral district but not containing one are 29.8% more dense than other tracts. Additionally, capital-intensive/large-scale mining was more persistent than labor-intensive/small-scale methods, and path dependence is achieved mainly through agglomeration. This research corroborates historical arguments focusing on the development of Western infrastructure for long term …
A Generalized Polar-Coordinate Integration Formula, Oscillatory Integral Techniques, And Applications To Convolution Powers Of Complex-Valued Functions On $\Mathbb{Z}^D$, Huan Q. Bui
Honors Theses
In this thesis, we consider a class of function on $\mathbb{R}^d$, called positive homogeneous functions, which interact well with certain continuous one-parameter groups of (generally anisotropic) dilations. Generalizing the Euclidean norm, positive homogeneous functions appear naturally in the study of convolution powers of complex-valued functions on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. As the spherical measure is a Radon measure on the unit sphere which is invariant under the symmetry group of the Euclidean norm, to each positive homogeneous function $P$, we construct a Radon measure $\sigma_P$ on $S=\{\eta \in \mathbb{R}^d:P(\eta)=1\}$ which is invariant under the symmetry group of $P$. With this measure, we prove …
The Quantitative Assessment Of Pond Scum: An Examination Of The Biogeochemistry Of Phosphorus Cycling In The Belgrade Lakes, Abbey M. Sykes
The Quantitative Assessment Of Pond Scum: An Examination Of The Biogeochemistry Of Phosphorus Cycling In The Belgrade Lakes, Abbey M. Sykes
Honors Theses
The internal recycling phosphorus in freshwater lake bottom sediments represents a significant source of hypolimnetic phosphorus (P) release for many of Maine’s lakes. In summer months, Maine lakes often thermally stratify and the lake hypolimnion develops anoxia, leading to a reduction in redox potential at the sediment-water interface. These reducing conditions facilitate the reductive dissolution of ferric iron, and, since phosphorus is often present in freshwater lake sediments as solid FeOOH-PO4 complexes, results in release of soluble phosphorus into the water column. Our current study presents field and laboratory data from sediment fractionation extractions designed to quantify concentrations of …
In Fear Of Black Revolutionary Contagion And Insurrection: Foucault, Galtung, And The Genesis Of Racialized Structural Violence In American Foreign Policy And Immigration Law, Ciji Dodds
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
This article investigates the power relation between the political anatomy of the Black soul and non-somatic expressions of white supremacy-based violence. Utilizing Michel Foucault’s theories of discipline and punishment in conjunction with Johan Galtung’s theory of structural violence, I posit that the exercise of state-sanctioned discipline and punishment in furtherance of white supremacy constitutes racialized structural violence. Thus, this article contributes to the current public discourse concerning the role white supremacy plays in America by establishing a new construct that can be used to dissect the nature of racial oppression.
Furthermore, this article analyzes the genesis and construction of racialized …
Origin Stories: Critical Race Theory Encounters The War On Terror, Natsu Taylor Saito
Origin Stories: Critical Race Theory Encounters The War On Terror, Natsu Taylor Saito
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
Stories matter. They matter to those intent on maintaining structures of power and privilege, and to those being crushed by those structures. In the United States, the space to tell, and to hear, our stories has been expanding. This means that the histories and lived realities of those who have been excluded, particularly people of color, are seeping into mainstream discourse, into the books our children read, the movies and television shows they watch, and the many websites comprising social media. Critical race theory has played a role in this expansion. It insists that we recognize the legitimacy of the …
Toward A Race-Conscious Critique Of Mental Health-Related Exclusionary Immigration Laws, Monika Batra Kashyap
Toward A Race-Conscious Critique Of Mental Health-Related Exclusionary Immigration Laws, Monika Batra Kashyap
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
This Article employs the emergent analytical framework of Dis/ability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit) to offer a race-conscious critique of a set of immigration laws that have been left out of the story of race-based immigrant exclusion in the United States—namely, the laws that exclude immigrants based on mental health-related grounds. By centering the influence of the white supremacist, racist, and ableist ideologies of the eugenics movement in shaping mental health-related exclusionary immigration laws, this Article locates the roots of these restrictive laws in the desire to protect the purity and homogeneity of the white Anglo- Saxon race against the threat of …
Law And Anti-Blackness, Michele Goodwin
Law And Anti-Blackness, Michele Goodwin
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
This Article addresses a thin slice of the American stain. Its value derives from the conversation it attempts to foster related to reckoning, reconciliation, and redemption. As the 1930s Federal Writers’ Project attempted to illuminate and make sense of slavery through its Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives From 1936-1938, so too this project seeks to uncover and name law’s role in fomenting racial division and caste. Part I turns to pathos and hate, creating race and otherness through legislating reproduction— literal and figurative. Part II turns to the Thirteenth Amendment. It argues that the preservation of slavery endured through …
