Simulation Of A Rat Muscle-Tendon Unit With Hill-Type Model Dynamics And The Study Of Viscoelasticity In A Collagen Molecule Via Molecular Dynamics, Veronica Siko Jan 2021

Simulation Of A Rat Muscle-Tendon Unit With Hill-Type Model Dynamics And The Study Of Viscoelasticity In A Collagen Molecule Via Molecular Dynamics, Veronica Siko

West Chester University Master’s Theses

The field of biological science has established that tendons transfer muscular forces to adjacent bones, but there is a dearth of information about the underlying physical principles of these interactions and how the property of viscoelasticity (displayed in tendons as a difference in mechanical response to stress with differing stretching rates) is encompassed in the collagen of tendons. This thesis details the results of concentric and eccentric contractions of the rat muscle-tendon unit (MTU) with and without viscoelasticity (concentric contraction requires active shortening of the muscle, while eccentric contraction requires active lengthening of the muscle) (Lovering & Brooks, 2014). Once …

The Biomechanical Energetics Of Terrestrial Locomotion In California Sea Lions (Zalophus Californianus): Efficiency Of Quadrupedal Galloping, Sarah Kerr Jan 2021

The Biomechanical Energetics Of Terrestrial Locomotion In California Sea Lions (Zalophus Californianus): Efficiency Of Quadrupedal Galloping, Sarah Kerr

West Chester University Master’s Theses

Pinnipedia, an order of semi-aquatic marine mammals, adapted a body design that allows for efficient aquatic locomotion but limited terrestrial locomotion. Phocids (true seals) have reduced forelimbs and are unable to bring their hindlimbs beneath them during terrestrial locomotion. Otariids, like the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus), have enlarged forelimbs and can bring their hindlimbs under the body to locomote quadrupedally on land. Due to these differences, phocids are expected to move on land with greater energetic costs compared to otariids. The mechanical costs of transport and power outputs of terrestrial locomotion were compared between the California sea …

Learning While Black: Creating Access To Graduate School For Black Students, Hassan Gomes Jan 2021

Learning While Black: Creating Access To Graduate School For Black Students, Hassan Gomes

West Chester University Master’s Theses

I am a Black educator.

I understand that from its inception higher education in Western culture was not designed with anyone but white men in mind. I am convinced that racism remains prominent in higher education and prevents space for the marginalized. This lack of space carries over into graduate studies and prevents Black student matriculation. Black students face barriers in graduate matriculation due to a lack of funding for graduate tuition, a lack of Black faculty and staff, and an abundance of negative experiences rooted in racism at institutions of higher education. Resources in graduate programs for Black students …

Gaining An Upper Hand: How Gesture Usage During Conflict Resolution Predicts Family Cohesion During The Transition To College, Martha Chan Jan 2021

Gaining An Upper Hand: How Gesture Usage During Conflict Resolution Predicts Family Cohesion During The Transition To College, Martha Chan

West Chester University Master’s Theses

The purpose of this project is to examine the frequency of hand gestures used by family triads (mother, father, and emerging adult offspring) engaging in a conflict resolution task. The hypotheses explored in this thesis expand upon previous research by Chu, Meyer, Foulkes, & Kita (2014), which suggested that the frequency of gestures individuals use may be related to their own desire to communicate clearly, while also functioning as a way to ensure that the listener understands the information they are conveying. In addition, the usage of gestures conveys to all parties the level of attention each participant has invested …

The benefits of enrichment and proper husbandry protocols and their applicability in wildlife research have been important topics of zoological research. Examining activity budgets of various species throughout zoological facilities reap biological, educational, and conservation benefits. We collected data on the behavioral responses of five western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) (1 adult male, 2 adult females, 2 infants/juveniles) to a novel climbing structure in the outdoor enclosure at the Philadelphia Zoo. Over a period of 53 nonconsecutive months, we conducted 30-minute focals with 2-minute scan samples on the gorillas (488 total observation hours). We recorded the frequency of …

“Which Of The People Here Would Suspect That So Much Is Going On In The Mind Of A Teenage Girl?”: Adolescent Resilience In The Holocaust Diaries Of Anne Frank And Renia Spiegel, Jenna Marie Walmer Jan 2021

“Which Of The People Here Would Suspect That So Much Is Going On In The Mind Of A Teenage Girl?”: Adolescent Resilience In The Holocaust Diaries Of Anne Frank And Renia Spiegel, Jenna Marie Walmer

West Chester University Master’s Theses

In this qualitative archival diary study, Holocaust-era diaries were explored for evidence of the resilience of adolescent girls. Adolescent-themed passages were selected from the posthumously published diaries of Anne Frank and Renia Speigel, who kept private diaries while under the constant threat of war and genocide. To explore how the everyday affairs of adolescent development may contribute to resilience in the face of trauma, I used thematic analysis to determine the prevalence and emotional valence of four themes of adolescence: evolving social-relationships, emotional fluctuation, cognitive-identity changes, and physical changes. The emotional valence of the adolescent-themed diary passages was more likely …

Sex Differences In Peripheral Fat Detection And Metabolism, Naima Dahir Jan 2021

Sex Differences In Peripheral Fat Detection And Metabolism, Naima Dahir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The current epidemic of obesity is driven, at least in part, by excessive caloric intake and fat intake has been implicated as a major contributing factor. The mammalian taste system displays marked plasticity, and it has been shown that the detection of fatty acids, the prototypical fat taste stimulus, leads to reduced sensitivity upon prolonged exposure to a high-fat diet. Increased obesity and metabolic disorders in postmenopausal females indicate that the female steroid hormone, estrogen, may contribute to metabolic homeostasis. Sex differences in the taste system were explored using a multidisciplinary approach to examine the ways in which estrogen influences …

The Reciprocal Effect Of Gastrointestinal Health On Psychological Distress And Disability In Emerging Adults, Emily Ross Jan 2021

The Reciprocal Effect Of Gastrointestinal Health On Psychological Distress And Disability In Emerging Adults, Emily Ross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The gut-brain connection refers to the bidirectional communication pathway between the brain and gastrointestinal (GI) system. Recent epidemiological research has suggested incidence rates of Disorders of Gut Brain Interaction (DGBI) in emerging adults are increasing. The goal of the study was to investigate the associations between the latent variables of GI health, psychological distress, and impairment in general functioning (disability) across two time points. Although the gut-brain connection has been established, research on its directionality and association with functioning in emerging adults remains an understudied area. A repeated measures design was used to collect data via an online survey in …

The Mechanics And Multiphysics Of Biomimetic Discrete Exoskeleton Substrates, Hessein Ali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Biological structures have inspired synthetic materials with unparalleled performances such as ultra-lightweight design, tunable elasticity, camouflaging, and antifouling. Among biological structures, exoskeletal scales that cover the exterior surfaces of fishes, fur, and many reptiles. These exoskeletal scales had appeared in the earliest stages of evolution of complex multicellular life and continued their existence in spite of millions of years of evolutionary pressures. This makes them an attractive candidate for biomimicry to produce high performance multifunctional materials with applications to soft robotics, wearables, energy efficient smart skins, antifouling surfaces and on-demand tunable materials. Canonically speaking, biomimetic samples can be fabricated by …

The Effects Of Critical Micelle Concentration And Environmental Factors On Oil Separation In Simulated Bilgewater Emulsions, Kelsey Rodriguez Doran Jan 2021

The Effects Of Critical Micelle Concentration And Environmental Factors On Oil Separation In Simulated Bilgewater Emulsions, Kelsey Rodriguez Doran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Improved bilgewater treatment is necessary because of technological challenges often faced when meeting existing ocean discharge criteria regulations. Since bilgewater is a waste mixture including hydraulic oils, cleaning agents, and seawater, the success of its management is largely attributed to understanding oil-in-water emulsion characterizations. However, the study of bilgewater emulsions is complex due to the multivariate nature of real-shipboard samples. The objective of this study is to develop the relationship between parameters commonly found in bilgewater and emulsion stability. This work is a continuation of a 3-year research project supported by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP). Previous …

Monitoring Landscape And Spectral Dynamics Of Subtropical Freshwater Wetlands That Have Undergone Hydrological Restoration, Sarah Parker Jan 2021

Monitoring Landscape And Spectral Dynamics Of Subtropical Freshwater Wetlands That Have Undergone Hydrological Restoration, Sarah Parker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Over the last century, millions of hectares of wetlands have been lost due to urban development and agricultural activities throughout the world. In the U.S., efforts have been made by federal and state legislation to restore wetland habitat in exchange for development on wetlands. To restore ecosystem function by reestablishing hydrological metrics (e.g., groundwater level fluctuations), wetland restoration aims to facilitate the growth of wetland vegetation to approximate the original conditions as a proxy for ecological integrity. In 1992, the first landscape-scale off-site mitigation project, the Disney Wilderness Preserve (DWP) was funded by the Walt Disney Company in Poinciana, Florida. …

Multi-Functional Fluorescence Microscopy Via Psf Engineering For High-Throughput Super-Resolution Imaging, Jinhan Ren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Image-based single cell analysis is essential to study gene expression levels and subcellular functions with preserving the native spatial locations of biomolecules. However, its low throughput has prevented its wide use to fundamental biology and biomedical applications which require large cellular populations in a rapid and efficient fashion. Here, we report a 2.5D microcopy (2.5DM) that significantly improves the image acquisition rate while maintaining high-resolution and single molecule sensitivity. Unlike serial z-scanning in conventional approaches, volumetric information is simultaneously projected onto a 2D image plane in a single shot by engineering the fluorescence light using a novel phase pattern. The …

Nanoplasmonic Colorimetric Sensors For Detection Of Ammonia From Water And Urine, Zuriel Caribe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Motivated by the need for inexpensive, simple, and portable devices for aqueous chemical analysis, we developed a nanoplasmonic colorimetric sensor capable of direct detection of wide range of chemicals. This novel sensor exploits the plasmonic resonance of metallic nanostructures with natural light to transduce changes in the chemical environment to changes in color, thus offering a simple route for real-time, in-situ, and low-cost analysis of aqueous chemical species. Due to its environmental and medical relevance, we chose aqueous ammonia to analyze and determine the efficacy and limit of detection of this sensing platform. For the metallic nanostructures we selected aluminium …

Anti-Map Triple Therapy Supports Immunomodulatory Therapeutic Response In Crohn's Disease Through Downregulation Of Nf-Kb Activation In The Absence Of Map Detection, Erij Elkamel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The triple antibiotic formulation, known as anti-MAP therapy, exhibits unique synergistic antimicrobial activity and should be effective for treatment of Crohn's disease (CD) associated with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). The absence of MAP detection in some CD cases may be linked to poor diagnostics or lack of association with the disease. To understand the therapeutic response of some CD patients to anti-MAP therapy in absence of MAP detection, the immunomodulatory potency of anti-MAP therapy and its major ingredients, clarithromycin (CLA) and rifabutin (RIF), in THP-1, Caco-2, and Jurkat T-cells were investigated. Anti-MAP formulation at 2.0 µg/mL decreased MAP viability …

Knowledge And Attitudes Of Nurse Practitioner's Assessment Of Adults With Signs And Symptoms Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Kelli Lipscomb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

As the numbers of primary care physicians decline, nurse practitioners (NPs) are filling this gap as primary care providers in many settings. The number of adults presenting to their primary care provider with signs and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) each year is unknown. The devastating effects of untreated PTSD include high rates of homelessness, violence, drug abuse, suicidality and a decreased quality of life. Little is known as to the breadth of NPs knowledge of PTSD sequelae, epidemiology and screening protocols. Increased perceived self-efficacy, tied to positive attitudes about PTSD knowledge and screening, result in overall higher rates …

A Mathematical Model For Predicting Animal Population Persistence On Fragmented Landscapes, Allyson Jones Jan 2021

A Mathematical Model For Predicting Animal Population Persistence On Fragmented Landscapes, Allyson Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The effects of roads, buildings, and cities on animal populations are widespread and, often times, disastrous. These structures fragment animals' homes, inhibiting their ability to obtain essential resources and to reproduce. The question arises then: Under what circumstances can an animal population persist in a fragmented landscape? To attempt to answer this question, we present a spatially explicit reaction-diffusion model with varying growth and diffusion rates that incorporates animal behavior at points where habitats are fragmented for four different habitats. The outcome of extinction or persistence of the animal population is determined by examining the effects of changing parameters on …

Reassessing The Transcriptional Regulation Of Protective Cd4 T Cell Responses Against Influenza A Virus, Kunal Dhume Jan 2021

Reassessing The Transcriptional Regulation Of Protective Cd4 T Cell Responses Against Influenza A Virus, Kunal Dhume

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

An attractive strategy to improve efficacy of current Influenza A Virus (IAV) vaccines is to promote protective CD4 T cell responses. Antiviral CD4 T cell responses are predominantly classified as strong IFN-gamma producing T helper type 1 (Th1) cells. Yet, the role of IFN-gamma in protection against IAV is still unclear, suggesting absolute Th1 polarization may be expendable for effective IAV immunity. Here we test this hypothesis using models that restrict the deficiency of known transcriptional regulators of Th1 immunity in only CD4 T cells, avoiding indirect impact on other immune cell responses. We find the 'master regulator' of Th1 …

Loss Of Control Eating Predicted By The Interaction Between Emotion Regulation Difficulties, Distress Tolerance, And The Expectancy That Eating Reduces Negative Affect, Emily Burr Jan 2021

Loss Of Control Eating Predicted By The Interaction Between Emotion Regulation Difficulties, Distress Tolerance, And The Expectancy That Eating Reduces Negative Affect, Emily Burr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

A prominent theory of binge eating is the affect regulation theory, which posits that individuals binge eat to alleviate negative affect, and subsequently reduced negative affect reinforces the behavior. Although it is well-supported that individuals experience elevated negative affect pre-binge, findings do not consistently evince reduced negative affect after binge eating. Therefore, the affect regulation theory does not fully account for binge eating. However, habitual binge eating without reliable improvement in affect may be accounted for by expectancy theory. Expectancies may be predictive of behavior whether the outcomes of a behavior are inconsistent. Additionally, there is an increasing scientific awareness …

Actin Cytoskeleton Dynamics And Organization Modulated By Macromolecular Crowding, Cation Interaction, And Nanomaterials, Jinho Park Jan 2021

Actin Cytoskeleton Dynamics And Organization Modulated By Macromolecular Crowding, Cation Interaction, And Nanomaterials, Jinho Park

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The assembly of actin, the essential cytoskeleton protein, into filaments and bundles/networks is important in various cellular processes including cell movement and morphogenesis. Actin bundle formation occurs in crowded intracellular environments with the aid of actin-crosslinking proteins. The role of actin-crosslinking proteins such as fascin and a-actinin in bundle formation has been investigated, however, how intracellular environments affect actin crosslinker-induced bundle formation is unknown. In the first two parts of this dissertation, we explore the effects of macromolecular crowding and cation interactions on the organization and mechanics of actin crosslinker-induced bundles. To determine how changing environmental conditions modulate actin bundling, …

Modulation Of Actin Filament Severing And Mechanics By Gelsolin In Varying Ph Conditions, Claire Toland Jan 2021

Modulation Of Actin Filament Severing And Mechanics By Gelsolin In Varying Ph Conditions, Claire Toland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Actin is an essential cytoskeletal protein that plays a critical role in cell mechanics, structure and organization with the help of actin binding proteins (ABPs). Gelsolin is a calcium-dependent ABP that severs actin filaments and caps them at their barbed end, regulating cell motility and signaling through dynamic actin cytoskeleton remodeling. A recent study has indicated that low pH stabilizes the active conformations of gelsolin. Additionally, the binding of gelsolin to the barbed end of an actin filament induces a conformational change that propagates along the actin filament. However, it has not been well understood how the complex intracellular environments …

Impact Of Crowder Size On Actin Filament Assembly Kinetics, Bryan Demosthene Jan 2021

Impact Of Crowder Size On Actin Filament Assembly Kinetics, Bryan Demosthene

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Actin is an abundant and essential cytoskeletal protein that plays a central role in eukaryotic cell structure and motility. The intracellular environment where actin assembly occurs is crowded with various organelles, proteins, and macromolecules that limit the accessible volume for biomolecular reactions. Macromolecular crowding induces excluded volume effects influencing the activity of biological molecules as well as the shape and conformation of proteins. Crowding agents, such as polysaccharides or inert polymeric molecules, are used to mimic the conditions present in intracellular spaces and provide a better understanding of interactions inside the cell. Macromolecular crowding has been shown to affect actin …

Correlations In Microplastic Abundance Between Water, The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica, And Their Biodeposits In A Dynamic Florida Estuary, Casey Craig Jan 2021

Correlations In Microplastic Abundance Between Water, The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica, And Their Biodeposits In A Dynamic Florida Estuary, Casey Craig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Estuaries have been identified as hotspots of microplastic pollution because they are transitional zones where coastal freshwater and oceans converge. Microplastics (MP) are transported through estuaries by a dynamic series of forces such as surface flow and tides, which influence MP abundances and trends. The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is an estuarine bivalve known to ingest MP, resulting in negative impacts on organism physiology. I investigated MP pollution as a threat to C. virginica in a dynamic Florida estuary, the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), and determined there are both regional and small-scale spatial and temporal fluctuations in MP abundance. Tributaries …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

A visible and Infrared (IR) range dual beam frequency comb Fourier transform spectrometer was developed. Using dual mode-locked Ti:Sapphire lasers a comb-interferogram was generated in the visible range. This spectrum was calculated and used to measure the transmittance of a Nd-doped crystal. The system was further developed to generate an IR interferogram by Difference Frequency Generation (DFG) using a Gallium Selenide (GaSe) crystal placed in the mode-locked pump beam. Numerical work was done to calculate the expected DFG spectrum confirming the necessary IR range can be reached. This has been conducted in support of an IR holographic spectroscopic microscopy spatial …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The dietary behavior of past communities is influenced by several factors such as environmental sources, social and economic organization, individual preferences, and physiological needs. Every society has its characteristics and understanding the dietary choices of its individuals expands the knowledge about its lifestyle. Applying biochemical tracers, we can explore the food choices of an Early Medieval Avar community. The Jagodnjak cemetery (n=35) in Croatia is dated to the 7–8th century. Historical and archaeological records are currently limited for Avar populations. Jagodnjak is a transitory community from a period where different historical events shaped the community's way of life. The research …

Enhancement And Evaluation Of Proton Pencil Beam Spot Placement Algorithms, Mahboob Ur Rehman Jan 2021

Enhancement And Evaluation Of Proton Pencil Beam Spot Placement Algorithms, Mahboob Ur Rehman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) in the form of pencil beam scanning (PBS) has shown improvement in treatment plan quality as compared to conventional proton and photon-based radiotherapy techniques. However, in IMPT maintaining a sharp lateral dose falloff is crucial for sparing organs at risk (OARs), especially when they are in close proximity to the target volume. The most common approach to improve lateral dose falloff is through the use of physical beam shaping devices, such as brass apertures or collimator-based systems. This work has shown that IMPT can be further improved by implementation of advanced spot placement techniques by …
