The Inclusive, Anti-Discrimination Message Of The Book Of Mormon, David M. Belnap Jan 2021

The Inclusive, Anti-Discrimination Message Of The Book Of Mormon, David M. Belnap

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Attitudes of superiority lead to societal conflict. The racial interpretation of a few Book of Mormon verses has contributed to these attitudes and conflicts, yet hundreds of inclusive messages are found in more than half of the book’s verses. God’s message, love, mercy, and justice are for all people. Righteous people did not think themselves above others, nor did they persecute others or start wars. War is tragic and is caused by wickedness. Conspiracies are a great evil. Righteous people were kind in their attitudes and actions, regardless of others’ social status or ethnicity. Some Book of Mormon people even …

The Practice And Meaning Of Declaring Lineage In Patriarchal Blessings, M. Steven Andersen Jan 2021

The Practice And Meaning Of Declaring Lineage In Patriarchal Blessings, M. Steven Andersen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In this paper, I show that declarations of lineage in patriarchal blessings have, since the earliest days of the Restoration, evolved in terms of frequency of inclusion, which tribal lineages predominate, and understanding of the meaning of the declaration. I argue for a non- literal understanding consistent with scripture and science, but posit that these declarations have deep and important significance in connection with the gathering of Israel.

Systemic Racism And Immigration Detention, Carrie L. Rosenbaum Jan 2021

Systemic Racism And Immigration Detention, Carrie L. Rosenbaum

Seattle University Law Review

The denouement of the Trump presidency was a white supremacist coup attempt against a backdrop of public reawakening to the persistence of institutionalized racism. Though the United States has entered a new administration with a leader that expresses his commitment to ending institutionalized racism, the United States continues to imprison Central American and Mexican immigrants at the southern border. If the majority of the people in immigration jails at the border are Latinx, does immigration law disparately impact them, and do they have a right to equal protection? If they do, would equal protection protect them? This Article explores whether …

Mri-Guided Breast Biopsy, Makayla Franko Jan 2021

Mri-Guided Breast Biopsy, Makayla Franko

Medical Imaging Senior Posters

This project explains the role MRI has in performing breast biopsies. MR imaging is used along with mammogram and ultrasound to detect and monitor lesions. Traditional imaging of the breast is explained to understand how images of the breast are obtained. The grade of the lesion and how the lesion is found indicates the type of biopsy performed. MRI provides superior visibility for lesions within the breast. MRI-guided breast biopsies are indicated in patients with lesions only visible on MRI. The equipment required for an MRI-guided breast biopsy includes the breast coil, grid, and vacuum-assisted breast biopsy apparatus. Experienced breast …

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

The University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and College of William & Mary historically have played important roles in the Commonwealth. They have set impressive records in admitting and graduating talented students who (predictably) do well after they leave these campuses. Nevertheless, the future viability and cohesion of the Commonwealth in this century will more likely be determined on campuses like Old Dominion University, for it is there that the critical social mobility challenge is being addressed in a meaningful way. We explore what the future may hold for ODU.

Mosquitoes Of Wisconsin: The Biology, Life History, Identification And Control, Timothy Wucherer Jan 2021

Mosquitoes Of Wisconsin: The Biology, Life History, Identification And Control, Timothy Wucherer

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

In the past 60 years, weather in Wisconsin has generally been getting warmer, and in many areas of the state, wetter (Moran et al., 2015). Long-term analysis of Wisconsin’s climate has indicated an increase in average annual precipitation, longer growing seasons, and an increase in average temperatures (Moran et al., 2015). Increases in temperatures and rain have been directly correlated with increases in vector-borne diseases such as pathogens carried by mosquitoes (Moran et al., 2015). With this, Wisconsin communities should prepare for possible increases in mosquito activity and the health and veterinary concerns that come with direct exposure to certain …

Root Nrt, Nir, Amt, Gs, Gogat And Gdh Expression Levels Reveal No Andaba Mediated Drought Tolerance In Brassica Juncea L., Seema Sahay, Luis Robledo-Arratia, Katarzyna Glowacka, Meetu Gupta

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Little is known about the interactive effects of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) and abscisic acid (ABA) on nitrogen (N) metabolism and related changes at molecular and biochemical levels under drought stress. The present study highlights the independent and combined effect of NO and ABA (grouped as “nitrate agonists”) on expression profiles of representative key genes known to be involved in N-uptake and assimilation, together with proline metabolism, N–NO metabolism enzyme’s activity and nutrient content in polyethylene glycol (PEG) treated roots of Indian mustard (B. juncea cv. Varuna). Here we report that PEG mediated drought stress negatively inhibited growth performance, as …

Dance For The Soul: An Ai Choreographer, Amelia Maddox Jan 2021

Dance For The Soul: An Ai Choreographer, Amelia Maddox

Theses & ETDs

Dance is the art of translating meaning and emotion into symbolic sequential movement. This thesis aims to model such creativity in the form of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) choreographer; given a word, the AI generates sequences of movement that capture the “feel” or emotion of the word. The AI has two main components: sentiment analysis of the word and translating the inferred sentiment into body movement, the latter of which is further broken down into a classification model and a generation model. The backbone of the word analysis is handled by a pre-trained model from a third party. The classification …

Classical Mechanics Simulations With Molecular Dynamics, Harley Andrew Jan 2021

Classical Mechanics Simulations With Molecular Dynamics, Harley Andrew

Theses & ETDs

Molecular Dynamics (MD) is a method of computer simulation of atoms and molecules which involves the use of Newton's equations of motion to determine trajectories of particles across small time-steps. In this thesis, the goal is to create a versatile program framework for the creation of MD simulations using the Processing programming environment and an object-oriented approach. This began with the creation of a versatile particle class meant to represent a single object in the simulation. The various ways in which particles interact were then established using conservation laws and Verlet Algorithms. To show its applicability, several sample programs using …

Growth Patterns And The Effect Of Ph On The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) Vibrissae, Isabella Mcdonnell Jan 2021

Growth Patterns And The Effect Of Ph On The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) Vibrissae, Isabella Mcdonnell

Theses & ETDs

Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) possess highly sensitive vibrissae across the surface of their body. These structures enable manatees to detect water flow and the changes in water flow that may result from the presence of nearby objects such as other manatees. This project examined vibrissae growth rate and possible effects a changing environment may have on these structures. We monitored 40 vibrissae follicles on two captive Florida manatees over ten weeks and experimentally manipulated pH levels in tanks that contained trimmed vibrissae. To understand growth, vibrissae length at each follicle was measured periodically and mean growth rate was found …

Evaluation Of Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of Herbal Medicines Compared To Antibiotics On Human Gut Microbes, Raian (Ryan) Counsman Jan 2021

Evaluation Of Potential Antimicrobial Properties Of Herbal Medicines Compared To Antibiotics On Human Gut Microbes, Raian (Ryan) Counsman

Theses & ETDs

This thesis evaluated the effect of modern antibiotics and traditional herbal medicines on bacteria isolated from the human gut. Antibiotics are medicines that are used on humans or animals to kill or slow down the growth of bacteria (Davies, 2017). Due to improper antibiotic usage, antibiotic resistance, the acquired ability of bacteria to avoid the antimicrobial effects of antibiotics, is becoming more prevalent (Davies, 2017). Resistance prevents antibiotics from clearing infections, creating dangerous bacteria such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, abbreviated as MRSA (Sakoulas, 2004). Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are problematic in our modern-day world (Sakoulas, 2004). When antibiotics are used incorrectly, more …

The Underwater Vocal Repertoire Of The North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis), Victoria Dina Jan 2021

The Underwater Vocal Repertoire Of The North American River Otter (Lontra Canadensis), Victoria Dina

Theses & ETDs

As growing anthropogenic noise pollution influences aquatic species' behavior and survival, it is crucial to identify what specific marine ecology aspects are affected by human activity. One keystone species of great interest is the otter, specifically the North American river otter whose ecological role is evident in the watersheds they call home. This study provides the first quantitative assessment of the underwater vocalizations of North American river otters, Lontra Canadensis (Schreber 1777), and examines the behavioral contexts within which these vocalizations are produced. Three captive North American river otters' vocal behavior was captured using a hydrophone in conjunction with a …

A Past Informing Present: An Autoethnographic Examination Of Identity Development, Alexandra Goldberg Jan 2021

A Past Informing Present: An Autoethnographic Examination Of Identity Development, Alexandra Goldberg

Theses & ETDs

Autoethnography is an emerging method of qualitative inquiry within the social sciences. Born out of ethnography and a call for increased reflexivity in research, autoethnography incorporates the researcher as a member of the community being studied. Using autoethnographic, ethnographic, oral history, and narrative research methods, I revisit moments from my past, using an individual perspective, and attempt to situate them within broader contexts. Participant interviews, presented as dialogue, are used to provide a wider lens to my own interpretations of past events. My analysis combines my positions as researcher and participant, to consider the role of family structure, class, and …

From The Kitchen To The Dining Room: Domestic Labor In The Second-Wave Feminist Installations Womanhouse And A Woman’S Place, Katie Thomas Jan 2021

From The Kitchen To The Dining Room: Domestic Labor In The Second-Wave Feminist Installations Womanhouse And A Woman’S Place, Katie Thomas

Theses & ETDs

Womanhouse(1972) and A Woman’s Place(1974) are examples of collaborative installations that examine feminist issues in settings associated with domesticity. In this thesis, I focus on spaces within these installations that foreground and subvert the cultural and social conceptions of the image and role of the housewife through an emphasis on her laboring body. By including various representations and traces of the body, each of these installations points out the physical nature of performing housework, and relates that to the process of performing the gendered role of the housewife. I first examine the kitchen and dining room from Womanhouse, where the …

Information Asymmetry In The Us Healthcare Market And Applications Of Data Collection Technologies, Connar Williams Jan 2021

Information Asymmetry In The Us Healthcare Market And Applications Of Data Collection Technologies, Connar Williams

Theses & ETDs

This paper examines the problem of adverse selection induced by asymmetry of information between buyers and sellers of health insurance and the negative effects imposed upon both firms and consumers. After reviewing some traditional methods used to address this problem, this thesis discusses the significant potential that certain Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) technologies may provide to address these issues and close the information gap. Specifically, it is shown that smartwatches capable of monitoring a wide array of health indicators including heart rate, body fat, respiratory activity, skin health, medication in sweat secretion, and other important vitals appear to be highly …

The Role Of Symbiodiniaceae On The Development Of Cassiopea Xamachana Under A Climate Change Scenario, Marjorie Netwal Jan 2021

The Role Of Symbiodiniaceae On The Development Of Cassiopea Xamachana Under A Climate Change Scenario, Marjorie Netwal

Theses & ETDs

There is an expanding body of knowledge surrounding the cnidarian-algae symbiosis which seeks to explore the intricacies of this relationship and deepen the understanding of the role algal thermotolerance plays in the success and longevity of the relationship. The adaptive bleaching hypothesis informs this line of research in that the it proposes that the ability of a host cnidarian to uptake a more thermotolerant species of algae than what it might naturally be in symbiosis with would afford the host more resistance to heat stress in the event of increasing seawater temperatures. In this study, Cassiopea xamachana polyps were used …

Research on financial literacy has not found a method to effectively teach young adults, economically underprivileged individuals, and their intersection, how to manage and develop their personal finances. This work builds the foundation for a method to test course efficacy in helping underprivileged young adults better understand intelligent personal finance management. In this course, active learning is achieved by making the students the center of their learning experience in that they will make decisions throughout modules based on the life they see realistically for themselves. This paper contains the research and design of the course, course material, survey material, and …

Measuring Brazilian Pepper’S (Schinus Terebinthifolia, Anacardiaceae) Allelopathic Effects On Native & Invasive Species, Thomas Smith Jan 2021

Measuring Brazilian Pepper’S (Schinus Terebinthifolia, Anacardiaceae) Allelopathic Effects On Native & Invasive Species, Thomas Smith

Theses & ETDs

Some plant species release organic chemical compounds (allelochemicals) in order to hinder the growth of other organisms. This adaptation is known as allelopathy and is relatively widespread among both native and invasive species. Brazilian Pepper, Schinus terebinthifolia, Anacardiaceae (BP) a notoriously damaging invasive plant in Florida, exhibits allelopathy on multiple fronts; the compounds in the leaves, roots, stems and seeds suppress germination and growth in native plant species. The allelopathic effects of Brazilian Pepper (BP) against native species have been well documented, but there is a dearth of research concerning how other invasive plant species in Florida react to BP …

From Illicit Cults To Superstition: Regulating Women’S Spiritual Activities Since The Late Qing Dynasty, Polly Robinson-Valenza Jan 2021

From Illicit Cults To Superstition: Regulating Women’S Spiritual Activities Since The Late Qing Dynasty, Polly Robinson-Valenza

Theses & ETDs

In China, women have long been engaged with praying, burning incense, and taking part in various temple celebrations and activities. As a result, China’s elites have consistently criticized women for their spirituality and attempted to control women by banning them from visiting temples. Despite the abundance of works in gender and religion in Chinese studies, many scholars have not sufficiently highlighted the intersection between these two fields. This thesis aims to fill this gap by analyzing the gendered motives behind temple bans in China since the late Qing dynasty. Moving chronologically from the late Qing period, to contemporary China, it …

Detection Of Brevetoxins At Low-Concentrations Via Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Griffen Hoo Jan 2021

Detection Of Brevetoxins At Low-Concentrations Via Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Griffen Hoo

Theses & ETDs

Red tide occurs naturally during harmful algae blooms which cause tremendous issues in ecosystems and the economy. Excess nutrients flowing into waters can feed into harmful algae blooms which increase the production of brevetoxins exponentially. Brevetoxin is a common neurotoxin that affects the respiratory systems of animals by activating their sodium channels. Although there are systems that can detect toxins at low concentrations like HPLC-MS and ELISA these are usually: not portable, very costly instruments, and their operation requires skilled labor. To target this issue, attempts were made to take the first steps at fabricating a toxin screening system that …

Toys For T’S: The Impact Of Enrichment On Captive Tarantulas, Tliltocatl Albopilosus, Alexandria Anderson-Whittaker Jan 2021

Toys For T’S: The Impact Of Enrichment On Captive Tarantulas, Tliltocatl Albopilosus, Alexandria Anderson-Whittaker

Theses & ETDs

Enrichment is the act of providing animals in captivity with stimulation outside of the basic necessities of food, water, and shelter. The study and implementation of enrichment in zoos and aquariums is increasing, but there is still a distinct absence of research on the enrichment needs of invertebrates. Tarantulas and other arthropods are often considered too neurobehaviorally simplistic to need cognitive stimulation, despite evidence of decision making and behavioral syndromes. This study examines the effect of environmental enrichment on the stress behaviors of the tarantula Tliltocatl albopilosus. Though no evidence was found to support the hypothesis that tarantulas in enriched …
