Recorded Instructor Feedback In Online Education, Kyle L. Lemberg Jan 2021

Recorded Instructor Feedback In Online Education, Kyle L. Lemberg

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of feedback is to communicate information to students about their performance or understanding. Instructor-created recorded audio is one method that may improve the effectiveness and efficiency of feedback. This literature review examines the effectiveness of audio feedback on improving student learning and performance. In relation to student experience, studies demonstrate a positive response from students to many aspects of audio feedback. These include increased engagement, better understanding of feedback, and a perception of more personalized feedback from instructors. Audio feedback has also been reported to positively impact the students' perception of instructors. Some studies suggest that audio feedback …

Reducing Depression In Metlakatla Adolescents Through Prevention And Intervention Training In Educators, Sophie Grupe, Cally S. Hinrichs, Katrina D. Reitz Jan 2021

Reducing Depression In Metlakatla Adolescents Through Prevention And Intervention Training In Educators, Sophie Grupe, Cally S. Hinrichs, Katrina D. Reitz

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

American Indian and Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) are reported to experience 2.5 times more psychological distress when compared to non-indigenous populations (Anxiety and Depression Association of America [ADAA], 2020). The Metlakatla Indian Community in Alaska is one AI/AN group that has high rates of mental illness (J. Burton, personal communication, October 7, 2020). Youth in the U.S. spend approximately 20% of their time in a school setting, therefore depression prevention and intervention education programs are increasingly considered best practiced in schools (Joshi, 2019). Educators have thus been identified as individuals that can be highly effective in recognizing and intervening when a …

The Unique Experience Of Female Autism, Deborah J. Solum Jan 2021

The Unique Experience Of Female Autism, Deborah J. Solum

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological, developmental disorder characterized by rigid, repetitive behaviors and impaired social communication skills. While ASD diagnoses have increased dramatically in recent years, identified males significantly outnumber female diagnosis rates. This thesis explores the unique experiences of girls with ASD and ascertains the gender-related differences in the diagnostic process, including the unique perspective of their families. A growing body of literature revealed that childhood gender differences may not be significantly pronounced, and from female and family perspectives, gender differences tended to emerge in adolescence.

Pulse Decay Thermal Conductivity Device, Matthew Schrenk Jan 2021

Pulse Decay Thermal Conductivity Device, Matthew Schrenk

All Undergraduate Projects

Currently, there are several ways in which thermal conductivity can be calculated or assessed on a given material. However, with each method of testing comes potential limitations such as size, material state, complexity, and time. The goal of this study was to develop a pulse heated thermistor that would reduce all four limitations, thus provide precise and timely results regardless of the material state and size. A thermistor is resistor which changes resistance in accordance to temperature. To achieve the design, heat transfer and electrical methods were applied. As with all resistors, heat is dissipated across the element and released …

Developing Monitoring And Evaluation Dynamic Systems For Alternative Families With Fostered Children/ تصميم أنظمة ديناميكية للمتابعة والتقييم للأسر البديلة للأطفال بالكفالة, Basma Mahmoud, Dina Refaei, Hend Ahmed, Khadiga Embaby Jan 2021

Developing Monitoring And Evaluation Dynamic Systems For Alternative Families With Fostered Children/ تصميم أنظمة ديناميكية للمتابعة والتقييم للأسر البديلة للأطفال بالكفالة, Basma Mahmoud, Dina Refaei, Hend Ahmed, Khadiga Embaby

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

Since 2016, the Egyptian Government has made many improvements to the Alternative Families System that aims to provide children without parental care with families. Yet, these families still face some obstacles in the monitoring and follow-up system after adoption. The paper sheds light on these obstacles; the roots and solution. We depend on qualitative methodological approaches, based on a purposive sample of key informants consisting of governmental officials, national and international entities, using in-depth interviews as the main tool for data collection, and surveys. As a result of our research, we found that there are limitations that affect the increasing …

Endothelial-Transcytosed Myeloperoxidase Activates Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Via A Phospholipase C-Dependent Calcium Signaling Pathway, Thuan Thai, Fei Zhong, Lei Dang, Enoch Chan, Jacqueline Ku, Ernst Malle, Carolyn L. Geczy, John F. Keaney., Jr, Shane R. Thomas

Education Papers and Journal Articles

During vascular inflammation, the leukocyte-derived enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO) is transcytosed across the endothelium and into the sub-endothelial extracellular matrix, where it promotes endothelial dysfunction by catalytically consuming nitric oxide (NO) produced by endothelial NO synthase (eNOS). In the presence of chloride ions and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), MPO forms the oxidant hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Here we examined the short-term implications of HOCl produced by endothelial-transcytosed MPO for eNOS activity. Incubation of MPO with cultured aortic endothelial cells (ECs) resulted in its transport into the sub-endothelium. Exposure of MPO-containing ECs to low micromolar concentrations of H2O …

Myeloperoxidase: A Versatile Mediator Of Endothelial Dysfunction And Therapeutic Target During Cardiovascular Disease, Sophie L. Maiocchi, Jacqueline Ku, Thuan Thai, Enoch Chan, Martin D. Rees, Shane R. Thomas

Education Papers and Journal Articles

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a prominent mammalian heme peroxidase and a fundamental component of the innate immune response against microbial pathogens. In recent times, MPO has received considerable attention as a key oxidative enzyme capable of impairing the bioactivity of nitric oxide (NO) and promoting endothelial dysfunction; a clinically relevant event that manifests throughout the development of inflammatory cardiovascular disease. Increasing evidence indicates that during cardiovascular disease, MPO is released intravascularly by activated leukocytes resulting in its transport and sequestration within the vascular endothelium. At this site, MPO catalyzes various oxidative reactions that are capable of promoting vascular inflammation and impairing …

Comment On: “A Review Of The Complementary Principle Of Evaporation: From The Original Linear Relationship To Generalized Nonlinear Functions” By Han And Tian (2020), Richard D. Crago, Jozsef Szilagyi, Russell Qualls Jan 2021

Comment On: “A Review Of The Complementary Principle Of Evaporation: From The Original Linear Relationship To Generalized Nonlinear Functions” By Han And Tian (2020), Richard D. Crago, Jozsef Szilagyi, Russell Qualls

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The paper by Han and Tian (2020) reviews the history of developments in the complementary relationship (CR) between actual and potential evaporation and introduces the generalized complementary principle (GCP) developed by the authors. This comment assesses whether the GCP: (1) can give reasonable results from a wide range of surfaces worldwide; (2) is supported by experimental data that verify the three stages of evaporation implicit in the GCP, particularly in the wet-surface limit; (3) has been proven to be correct by the authors in a previous paper; and (4) is supported by model studies showing that wet surfaces occur predominantly …

Is Hay For The Birds? Investigating Landowner Willingness To Time Hay Harvests For Grassland Bird Conservation, Matthew P. Gruntorad, Katherine A. Graham, Nico Arcilla, Christopher J. Chizinski

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Birds in agricultural environments have exhibited steep global population declines in recent decades, and effective conservation strategies targeting their populations are urgently needed. In grasslands used for hay production, breeding birds’ nest success improves substantially if hay harvests are delayed until after mid-July. However, few studies have investigated private hay producers’ willingness to alter their harvesting practices to support bird conservation, a critical factor for bird conservation where most land is privately owned, such as in the North American Great Plains. We surveyed Nebraska hay producers to examine whether livestock production, wildlife knowledge, and hunting activity affects their willingness to …

Empirical vegetation indices derived from spectral reflectance data are widely used in remote sensing of the biosphere, as they represent robust proxies for canopy structure, leaf pigment content, and, subsequently, plant photosynthetic potential. Here, we generalize the broad family of commonly used vegetation indices by exploiting all higher-order relations between the spectral channels involved. This results in a higher sensitivity to vegetation biophysical and physiological parameters. The presented nonlinear generalization of the celebrated normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) consistently improves accuracy in monitoring key parameters, such as leaf area index, gross primary productivity, and sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence. Results suggest that …

Combining Uav-Rgb High-Throughput Field Phenotyping And Genome-Wide Association Study To Reveal Genetic Variation Of Rice Germplasms In Dynamic Response To Drought Stress, Zhao Jiang, Haifu Tu, Baowei Bai, Chenghai Yang, Biquan Zhao, Ziyue Guo, Qian Liu, Hu Zhao, Wanneng Yang, Lizhong Xiong, Jian Zhang

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Accurate and high-throughput phenotyping of the dynamic response of a large rice population to drought stress in the field is a bottleneck for genetic dissection and breeding of drought resistance.

Here, high-efficiency and high-frequent image acquisition by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was utilized to quantify the dynamic drought response of a rice population under field conditions. Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and canopy height models were applied to extract highly correlated phenotypic traits including UAV-based leaf-rolling score (LRS_uav), plant water content (PWC_uav) and a new composite trait, drought resistance index by UAV (DRI_uav).

The DCNNs achieved high accuracy (correlation …

Overcoming An “Irreversible” Threshold: A 15-Year Fire Experiment, Christine H. Bielski, Rheinhardt Scholtz, Victoria Donovan, Craig R. Allen, Dirac Twidwell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

A key pursuit in contemporary ecology is to differentiate regime shifts that are truly irreversible from those that are hysteretic. Many ecological regime shifts have been labeled as irreversible without exploring the full range of variability in stabilizing feedbacks that have the potential to drive an ecological regime shift back towards a desirable ecological regime. Removing fire from grasslands can drive a regime shift to juniper woodlands that cannot be reversed using typical fire frequency and intensity thresholds, and has thus been considered irreversible. This study uses a unique, long-term experimental fire landscape co-dominated by grassland and closed-canopy juniper woodland …
