Development Of Clinical Practice Guidelines For Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Rehabilitation, Rikki Silver
Development Of Clinical Practice Guidelines For Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Rehabilitation, Rikki Silver
OT Student Capstones
In the past four decades, there have been significant improvements in early cancer detection and efficacy of cancer treatments, resulting in a growing number of cancer survivors. People diagnosed with cancer are now living longer than ever before; while lifespan after cancer is increasing, cancer survivors are experiencing health and functional challenges due to the persistent effects of curative therapy (Rowland et al., 2018). One of these effects includes chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Approximately 70% of patients receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy experience CIPN, an uncomfortable and sometimes painful sensation in the hands and feet (Seretny et al., 2014). The likelihood of …

Hare & Bell Writing Contest
Have you ever had a vaccine? I have. Some haven’t. I remember when I was a kid,
maybe around six, sitting on the paper-covered exam table in my doctor’s office. The room was sterile and cold, and a nurse was approaching me with the needle. Like most children, I was absolutely petrified. The fear of the unknown, of the pain, of a foreign metal penetrating my body...completely out of control and unaware of what it was supposed to protect me from...only aware of the fear. I cried. I tried to get away. They had to hold my arm down to …

This article documents my lived experience as a participant observer in a writing/performance course that brought together returning citizens, police officers, community activists, university students and faculty. I am utilizing Hoffman’s (2004) “Living Stories” framework and Cutts’ (2016) expansion of Poetic Inquiry to present “Ars Spirituality” as the lens to frame the discussion of my storytelling and storiography experience. Curated by Duquesne University sociologist Norman Conti, with theoretical justification from C. Wright Mills and Erving Goffman, the course was co-facilitated by award-winning actor/writer Roger Guenveur Smith and world-renowned writing coach and performer Susan Stein over Zoom video conferencing …

On James Sterba’S Refutation Of Theistic Arguments To Justify Suffering, Bruce R. Reichenbach
On James Sterba’S Refutation Of Theistic Arguments To Justify Suffering, Bruce R. Reichenbach
Faculty Authored Articles
In his recent book Is a Good God Logically Possible? and article by the same name, James Sterba argued that the existence of significant and horrendous evils, both moral and natural, is incompatible with the existence of God. He advances the discussion by invoking three moral requirements and by creating an analogy with how the just state would address such evils, while protecting significant freedoms and rights to which all are entitled. I respond that his argument has important ambiguities and that consistent application of his moral principles will require that God remove all moral and natural evils. This would …

Stay-At-Home Order And Spatial Disparities In Covid-19 Pandemic In New York City, Youqin Huang, Rui Li
Understanding and eliminating minority health disparities in a 21st-century pandemic: A White Paper Collection
Much of the world has adopted unprecedented lockdown policies as the key method to address the spread of COVID-19; yet their effect on pandemic outcomes remain largely unknown. This research determines how mobility restriction policies and public transit system shape intra-city health disparities in this pandemic, using New York City as a case study. With a spatial method and multiple sources of data, this research demonstrates the effectiveness of the stay-at-home order. On average, people spent about 20% more time at home in 2020 than in the same period in 2019. Census tracts with people spending more time at home …

Implementing A Health And Wellness Program For Low Income Children And Their Families: A Community Outreach Program, Kailey Ann Geib, Hannah N. Moland, Emily Nicole Nelson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Low income status has been proven to have negative effects on overall health, such as increased prevalence of chronic diseases and poor childhood development (Gupta, de Wit, & McKeown, 2007). Children living in communities of this status often do not have access to healthy foods or exercise facilities in comparison to middle and upper class children (Gupta, de Wit, & McKeown, 2007). Enhancement of education on these topics has the ability to combat the risk for poor health outcomes. A health and wellness program called SMILE was created and implemented at a child care center, called Carol Mathey’s Center for …
Impact Of Relative Age On Need For Special Education Services, Leonie Giles
Impact Of Relative Age On Need For Special Education Services, Leonie Giles
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis consists of a literature review of research on a potential correlation between a student's birthdate, age upon entry into kindergarten, and the potential need for special education services while in elementary school. Results were mixed on the benefits of delaying entry into school. While results appeared contradictory at times, closer analysis indicates that benefits depend on the individual, on the presence of a disability, the gender, and socio-economic status, and on when a student is born. Students born in the months directly preceding kindergarten eligibility are at a disadvantage when compared to those born right after the cut-off …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Self-monitoring behavior is one way students can be involved in their learning. Research shows that desired behaviors increase, and academic performance improves, when students monitor their behavior during class. This action research project reviews self-monitoring literature and examines how accurately fifth-grade male students who are receiving services for Autism Spectrum Disorder can self-monitor their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and how self-monitoring affects their progress toward their IEP goals. The results suggest these students were able to accurately self-monitor and show progress toward their IEP goals.
Efficacy Of Kinesio Taping Combined With Eccentric Exercise In Decreasing Pain In Motion For Overhead Athletes With Rotator Cuff Tendonitis, Ester Vang
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rotator cuff tendonitis is an injury that can occur in overhead athletes with overuse and eccentric training has shown to help relieve any pain with rotator cuff tendonitis. Kinesio taping (KT) is becoming increasingly popular in the athlete population. KT and eccentric training could be beneficial and effective together, but also remains unsolved as KT has many unanswered questions. The purpose of this critical review is to determine if eccentric exercise combined with KT is superior than with just eccentric exercise in rehabilitation for overhead athletes in order to decrease pain while in motion. There were 17 articles in total …

This thesis explores the topic of effective teaching in the world of education. There are many definitions to describe what effectiveness is, but a central theme is comparative to educational objectives. Once goals are established, effectiveness can be measured. It is clear through literature and research that a teacher has a huge impact on their students, not only within one year but has a cumulative effect that stretches across many years. This literature review separates effective teaching into two sections: qualities and characteristics of effective teachers and practices and strategies of effective teachers. The findings were quite conclusive and showed …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Chronic disease currently affects 45%, nearly half, of all persons in the United States (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2018). A systemic, cellular etiology of chronic disease has been proposed: literature supports the mechanism of a universal cell danger response (CDR) (Naviaux, 2019). The hallmark of the CDR, the shift in metabolism to anaerobic glycolysis, is initiated by altered functionality of the mitochondria (Naviaux, 2019). Current research on mitochondrial dysfunction has demonstrated that a hypoxic intervention has successfully increased longevity in mice with mitochondrial dysfunction, but such an intervention has not, to our knowledge, been attempted in humans (Jain et al., 2016). …

Students In Special Education And Extracurricular Activities, Marissa A. Eastling
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research regarding the effects of extracurricular activities on youth is abundant and clear: extracurricular activities benefit students. Some even suggest the benefits go far beyond the high school experience and can have a profound and positive influence on adulthood. However, school-organized extracurriculars often leave out many in their school population, such as their students with disabilities. This thesis examines the effects of extracurriculars on secondary students and the need for all adolescents to feel socially accepted. It discusses how extracurriculars can provide the feeling of social acceptance for both students of typical development and those with disabilities. Finally, it provides …
