Prevention In Context: An Examination Of Factors Associated With Recent Hiv Testing Among Men In New York City, Anthony Freeman
Prevention In Context: An Examination Of Factors Associated With Recent Hiv Testing Among Men In New York City, Anthony Freeman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Using intersectionality, Critical Race Theory and Quare theory as theoretical frameworks, this dissertation employs hierarchical logistic regression and data from New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) Community Health Survey (CHS) to examine the relative association of key variables and domains -- demographics, sexual characteristics, risk factors and engagement in medical care variables -- on recent HIV testing for a sample of 3997 men. Further, this study explores these effects separately for White, Black, Latino and Asian men.
Findings shows that respondents who were 18-24 years old, 45-64 years old, residing in Queens or Staten Island, employed, …
Teaching Choral Music Of The African Diaspora In The United States: Toward A “Living Black History”, H. Roz Woll
Teaching Choral Music Of The African Diaspora In The United States: Toward A “Living Black History”, H. Roz Woll
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In higher education choral curricula, the opportunity to study the breathtakingly rich scope of music rooted in Africa and the African diaspora with rigor and depth is often marginalized, neglected, or missing. If studied, it may be framed in the context of “other music” in contrast to music of the Western European canon, creating an oppositional framework rather than an interdependent one. Moreover, opportunities to study the political economy of this music in relationship to race, class, gender, and religion are lacking. This has multiple ramifications for music students’ preparedness to engage in global habits of citizenship in support of …
Frozen In Time: A Numerical Modeling Approach To The Study Of Ice Bearing Planetesimals Through Carbonaceous Chondrites, Jasmine M. Bayron
Frozen In Time: A Numerical Modeling Approach To The Study Of Ice Bearing Planetesimals Through Carbonaceous Chondrites, Jasmine M. Bayron
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Icy planetesimals are significant objects of study for meteoritics, planetary science, and astrobiology due to their connections to the origins of life and liquid water on Earth. An existing closed system aqueous alteration model was adapted to simulate several scenarios involving early Solar System geologic processes occurring in an icy planetesimal interior. The model described in this work has been developed not only to test the validity of constraints currently thought to apply to CM1 parent bodies, but to directly compare the implications of these constraints for the isotopic composition and the modal mineralogy of carbonaceous chondrites. Isotopic ratios of …
Cell Cycle Progression Effects Of Albumin, Sharmeen Uddin
Cell Cycle Progression Effects Of Albumin, Sharmeen Uddin
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Progression through G1 phase of the cell cycle is controlled largely by growth factors in early G1 and by nutrients in late G1 indicating sufficient raw material for cell division. We previously mapped a late G1 cell cycle checkpoint for lipids upstream from a mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1)-mediated checkpoint and downstream from a mid-G1 checkpoint known as the Restriction point. We therefore investigated a role for lipids in progression through late G1 into S-phase. Quiescent BJ-hTERT human fibroblasts primed back into G1 with FBS treatment, were treated with a mixture of …
Mechanism Of Action Of Dihydropteridine Reductase, Gabriela Arias De La Rosa
Mechanism Of Action Of Dihydropteridine Reductase, Gabriela Arias De La Rosa
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Human dihydropteridine reductase is an enzyme that transfers a hydride from NADH to reduce quinonoid 7,8-dihydropterin (qBH2) to 5,6,7,8-tetrahydropterin (BH4), which is a cofactor important in the production of neurotransmitters.DHPR deficiency causes a drastic form of the neurological genetic disease phenylketonuria (PKU) that does not benefit from a phenylalanine-free diet. From site-directed mutagenesis studies, mostly on Rat DHPR, we know that certain residues are important for cofactor binding, substrate binding, and hydride transfer; however, there are still some questions about how DHPR works, particularly, because there is not a crystal structure of the tertiary complex: What is …
A New Feature Selection Method Based On Class Association Rule, Sami A. Al-Dhaheri
A New Feature Selection Method Based On Class Association Rule, Sami A. Al-Dhaheri
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Feature selection is a key process for supervised learning algorithms. It involves discarding irrelevant attributes from the training dataset from which the models are derived. One of the vital feature selection approaches is Filtering, which often uses mathematical models to compute the relevance for each feature in the training dataset and then sorts the features into descending order based on their computed scores. However, most Filtering methods face several challenges including, but not limited to, merely considering feature-class correlation when defining a feature’s relevance; additionally, not recommending which subset of features to retain. Leaving this decision to the end-user may …
Direct Recruitment Of Eif4gi And/Dap5 To The 5' Utr Of A Subset Of Human Mrna Drives Their Cap-Independent Translation, Solomon A. Haizel
Direct Recruitment Of Eif4gi And/Dap5 To The 5' Utr Of A Subset Of Human Mrna Drives Their Cap-Independent Translation, Solomon A. Haizel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
During unfavorable cellular conditions (e.g., tumor hypoxia, viral infection, nutrient deprivation, etc.), the canonical, cap-dependent translation initiation pathway in human cells is suppressed by sequestration of the cap-binding protein, eukaryotic initiation factor(eIF) 4E, by 4E-binding proteins. Circumvention of cap-dependent translation shutdown has been linked to tumor development and cancer progression. The stress-induced repression of cap-dependent translation has also been correlated with increased eIF4GI and its homolog, Death Associated Protein 5 (DAP5) expression levels, suggesting these factors have a role in cap-independent translation. Despite several evidence pointing towards a link upregulation of eIF4GI and /DAP5 levels during stress conditions, and the …
Serial Killer: Gustave Flaubert's Pro-Woman, Woman-Killing Madame Bovary, Francesca Montalti
Serial Killer: Gustave Flaubert's Pro-Woman, Woman-Killing Madame Bovary, Francesca Montalti
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis will argue that Gustave Flaubert kills the women in Madame Bovary, all of whom are married and/ or mothers in the novel, in order to overtly represent the impossible conditions of womanhood and domestic life in nineteenth century France. Further, I will expose the ways in which Flaubert, through these killings, aims to release his woman characters from their lives of oppression and imprisonment, detailing their increasingly limited options in life and their lack of agency. Although Flaubert does attempt to give his women, in particular Emma Bovary, limited agency in the work, this agency is always …
Reimagining Post-Secondary Training, Community College, And Welfare Supports, Aaron Azerad
Reimagining Post-Secondary Training, Community College, And Welfare Supports, Aaron Azerad
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This paper seeks to study the income patterns at the sub-bachelorette level through community colleges and workforce training programs. Using 2018 U.S. Census PUMA microdata, this thesis not only explores which fields of study, industries, and occupations have a sufficient number of observations to determine whether they provide incomes which are commensurate with a middle class livelihood but, also whether these jobs are plentiful in number.
The second goal is to evaluate the effects of the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (the Clinton era welfare reform) and how it has influenced Giuliani era ‘work requirement’ initiatives tied …
Role Of Protonation State Changes And Hydrogen Bonding Around The Oxygen Evolving Complex Of Photosystem Ii, Divya Matta
Role Of Protonation State Changes And Hydrogen Bonding Around The Oxygen Evolving Complex Of Photosystem Ii, Divya Matta
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The mechanism of natural photosynthesis involves the use of solar energy to produce O2 we breathe and food and fuel we intake. This process results in the biological oxidation of water that takes place at room temperature, neutral pH using earth abundant elements Ca and Mn. Understanding how this challenging chemical reaction occurs in photosynthesis can be useful for designing better artificial photosynthetic complexes that can be used as biofuels. My doctoral work is to study the deprotonation and oxidation events elucidating the mechanistic details of proton coupled electron transfer reaction in a photosynthetic protein.
The O2 evolution …
Insights Into Leptopilina Spp. Immune-Suppressive Strategies Using Mixed-Omics And Molecular Approaches, Brian Wey
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Host-parasite interactions influence the biology of each over the course of evolution. Parasite success allows for the passage of potent virulence strategies from generation to generation. Host success passes stronger immunity and resistance strategies to the following generations as well. Only by studying both partners within their natural contexts can we begin to understand the relationship between the two and how immune mechanisms and virulence strategies interact as a molecular arms race.
In this work, we focus on a natural host-parasite pair, the Drosophila-Leptopilina model. Leptopilina species are parasites of several fruit fly species, including Drosophila melanogaster. This model …
The Different Components Of Active Shooter Incidents: Examining The Co-Occurrence Of Offender And Incident Characteristics, Jeffery R. Osborne
The Different Components Of Active Shooter Incidents: Examining The Co-Occurrence Of Offender And Incident Characteristics, Jeffery R. Osborne
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The present dissertation examined 198 United States single-offender active shooter incidents and thematically differentiated cases based on 1) offender backgrounds, 2) precipitating stressors, 3) offender routine activity, 4) crime scene location, and 5) incident characteristics. Doing so contributed to the increasing number of studies that have stressed the importance of creating empirically-based models to better understand active shooter incidents and the offenders who are responsible. To structure this investigation into active shooter incidents, concepts within Environmental Criminology and Crime Analysis were paired with analytical methodologies seen in Offender Profiling and Investigative Psychology research.
The findings illustrated that offenders could be …
Using The Marcus Inverted Region And Artificial Cofactors To Create A Charge Separated State In De Novo Designed Proteins, Eskil Me Andersen
Using The Marcus Inverted Region And Artificial Cofactors To Create A Charge Separated State In De Novo Designed Proteins, Eskil Me Andersen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
To create an efficient de novo photosynthetic protein it is important to create long lived charge separated states. Achieving stable charge separation leads to an increase in the efficiency of the photosynthetic reaction which in turn leads to higher yields of end products, such as biofuels, electrical charge, or synthetic chemicals. In an attempt to create charge separated states in de novo proteins we hypothesized that we could engineer the free energy gaps in the proteins from excited primary donor (PD) to acceptor (A), and A back to ground state PD such that the forward electron transfer (ET) would be …
Modeling And Analysis Of Affiliation Networks With Subsumption, Alexey Nikolaev
Modeling And Analysis Of Affiliation Networks With Subsumption, Alexey Nikolaev
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
An affiliation (or two-mode) network is an abstraction commonly used for representing systems with group interactions. It consists of a set of nodes and a set of their groupings called affiliations. We introduce the notion of affiliation network with subsumption, in which no affiliation can be a subset of another. A network with this property can be modeled by an abstract simplicial complex whose facets are the affiliations of the network.
We introduce a new model for generating affiliation networks with and without subsumption (represented as simplicial complexes and hypergraphs, respectively). In this model, at each iteration, a constant number …
School Recess And Changes To Children's Play Opportunities In New York City, Keyonna Hayes
School Recess And Changes To Children's Play Opportunities In New York City, Keyonna Hayes
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The policy, No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 in US public schools was designed to improve how children learn and test in schools, but it has resulted in the decline or removal of recess from most schools. This thesis examines two important issues. The first issue is to assess the play opportunities that public elementary schools offer to children, in terms of both the time available for recess and the quality of the spaces and resources for play during recess. The second issue is to learn, alongside the question of the quality of school recess, how parents’ work …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The main objective of this study involves the development of a habitat suitability model for the Ulva genus in Jamaica Bay, New York. This incorporates several steps that were initiated by the selection of the most suitable water quality parameters that facilitate the successful growth of Ulva. These water quality parameters include dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, salinity, nitrate + nitrite, ammonium, phosphates, dissolved organic nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, depth and Secchi depth. This water quality data was generated by the Department of Environmental Protection. The Secchi depth and Jamaica Bay bathymetry data were necessary for the calculation of the …
Cooperation: The Ethics Of Shared Agency, Jules F. Salomone-Sehr
Cooperation: The Ethics Of Shared Agency, Jules F. Salomone-Sehr
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Picture yourself at a Parisian café, gazing at people walking down the street. At first, they seem to be typical Parisians going about their own business. Until you realize, as you spot cameras, that they are all actors on a movie set. You thought you were in the midst of many individual actions, but it is now clear that each actor is playing their part in a different kind of activity: a shared activity.
Our capacity for shared agency is fundamental to our social lives. We make movies, sit in Parliament, and fight pandemics together. In my …
Covert Computation In Self-Assembled Circuits, Angel A. Cantu, Austin Luchsinger, Robert Schweller, Tim Wylie
Covert Computation In Self-Assembled Circuits, Angel A. Cantu, Austin Luchsinger, Robert Schweller, Tim Wylie
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Traditionally, computation within self-assembly models is hard to conceal because the self-assembly process generates a crystalline assembly whose computational history is inherently part of the structure itself. With no way to remove information from the computation, this computational model offers a unique problem: how can computational input and computation be hidden while still computing and reporting the final output? Designing such systems is inherently motivated by privacy concerns in biomedical computing and applications in cryptography. In this paper we propose the problem of performing “covert computation” within tile self-assembly that seeks to design self-assembly systems that “conceal” both the input …

Demonstrating The Public Value Of Extension Forestry Programming Through Benefit Transfer Analysis, Daniel L. Goerlich, John F. Munsell, Heather H. Boyd, Klaus Moeltner
Journal of Extension
Cooperative Extension produces public value through educational programming that benefits the greater community. Forests provide numerous valuable benefits to society through the provision of ecosystem services. Cooperative Extension educational programming positively affects forest owners, who, in turn, conduct actions that enhance ecosystem services. An understudied relationship exists between Cooperative Extension and ecosystem services that can be drawn on to document Extension's public value. Applying ecosystem services values to Extension natural resources–related programmatic outcomes through benefit transfer provides an avenue through which Extension can potentially make significant advancements in monetizing its public value.

Animal Disaster Training: Assessing Disaster Preparedness And Perceptions Of Responders, Carla L. Huston
Journal of Extension
Extension has an important role in addressing animal issues in communities. An evaluation of animal disaster preparedness and perceptions of participants in a large-animal emergency training course was conducted through precourse and postcourse surveys, and survey data from first responders were compared to those of other participants. Few participants had personal disaster plans that included animals. After taking the course, participants demonstrated greater appreciation for collaborating agencies and better recognition of the importance of animal handling, animal behavior, and animal first aid/triage. Overall, participants identified equipment safety and personal protective equipment as the most important topics for which training is …

Intergenerational Learning: An Exploratory Study Of The Concept, Role And Potential Of Intergenerational Learning (Igl) As A Pedagogical Strategy In Irish Early Childhood Education (Ece) Services, Anne Fitzpatrick
Doctoral
This study investigates the concept, role and potential of intergenerational learning (IGL) as a pedagogical strategy in Irish early childhood education (ECE) services. It explores the perspectives on IGL of educators(5), children(70) and their parents(43) in five Irish ECE services in city, town and suburban locations. The theoretical and conceptual framework was informed by socio-cultural theories of learning aligned to key principles of IGL. A qualitative methodological approach was adopted to access these perspectives.Specifically, the methods used to gather data were semi-structured interviews with educators, draw and talk strategies with children and informal written feedback with parents. Educators played a …

The depolarization is also important for the short-term synaptic plasticity, known as depolarization-induced suppression of excitation (DSE). The two major types of neurons and their synapses in the lateral nucleus of amygdala (LA) are prone to plasticity. However, DSE in interneurons has not been reported in amygdala in general and in LA in particular. Therefore, we conducted the patch-clamp experiments with LA interneurons. These neurons were identified by lack of adaptation in firing rate of action potentials. In this study, we show for the first time a transient suppression of neurotransmission at synapses both within the local network and between …

Transcorneal Electrical Stimulation Reduces Neurodegenerative Process In A Mouse Model Of Glaucoma, Assraa Hassan Jassim, Mckay Cavanaugh, Jessica Stukel Shah, Rebecca Willits, Denise M. Inman
Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease in which the retinal ganglion cell axons of the optic nerve degenerate concomitant with synaptic changes in the retina, leading finally to death of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Electrical stimulation has been used to improve neural regeneration in a variety of systems, including in diseases of the retina. Therefore, the focus of this study was to investigate whether transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) in the DBA2/J mouse model of glaucoma could improve retinal or optic nerve pathology and serve as a minimally invasive treatment option. Mice (10 months-old) received 21 sessions of TES over 8 …

Using The Gouy Phase Anomaly To Localize And Track Bacteria In Digital Holographic Microscopy 4d Images, True Gibson, Manuel Bedrossian, Eugene Serabyn, Chris Lindensmith, Jay Nadeau
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Described over 100 years ago, the Gouy phase anomaly refers to the additional π phase shift that is accumulated as a wave passes through focus. It is potentially useful in analyzing any type of phase-sensitive imaging; in light microscopy, digital holographic microscopy (DHM) provides phase information in the encoded hologram. One limitation of DHM is the weak contrast generated by many biological cells, especially unpigmented bacteria. We demonstrate here that the Gouy phase anomaly may be detected directly in the phase image using the z-derivative of the phase, allowing for precise localization of unlabeled, micrometer-sized bacteria. The use of dyes …

Heterocycles In The Treatment Of Neglected Tropical Diseases, Kush K. Maheshwari, Debasish Bandyopadhyay
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
Background: Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) affect a huge population of the world and the majority of the victims belong to the poor community of the developing countries. Until now, the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified 20 tropical diseases as NTDs that must be addressed with high priority. However, many heterocyclic scaffolds have demonstrated potent therapeutic activity against several NTDs.
Objective: There are three major objectives: (1) To discuss the causes, symptoms, and current status of all the 20 NTDs; (2) To explore the available heterocyclic drugs, as well as their mechanisms of action (if known), that are being used …

Treecaps: Tree-Based Capsule Networks For Source Code Processing, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui, Yijun Yu, Lingxiao Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recently program learning techniques have been proposed to process source code based on syntactical structures (e.g., Abstract Syntax Trees) and/or semantic information (e.g., Dependency Graphs). While graphs may be better at capturing various viewpoints of code semantics than trees, constructing graph inputs from code need static code semantic analysis that may not be accurate and introduces noise during learning. On the other hand, syntax trees are precisely defined according to the language grammar and easier to construct and process than graphs. We propose a new tree-based learning technique, named TreeCaps, by fusing capsule networks with tree-based convolutional neural networks, to …

Anopheles mosquitoes are colonized by diverse microorganisms that may impact on host biology and vectorial capacity. Eukaryotic symbionts such as fungi have been isolated from Anopheles, but whether they are stably associated with mosquitoes and transmitted transstadially across mosquito life stages or to subsequent generations remains largely unexplored. Here, we show that a Leptosphaerulina sp. fungus isolated from the midgut of An. gambiae can be stably associated with An. gambiae host and that it imposes low fitness cost when re-introduced through co-feeding. This fungus is transstadially transmitted across An. gambiae developmental stages and to their progeny. It is present in …
