Black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) stands in south Texas grow in association with other autotrophic organisms including herbaceous halophytes and cyanobacterial mats. Despite the relevant ecosystem services provided by this coastal plant community, limited information exists on its functioning, in particular as it pertains to nutrient dynamics, namely nitrogen (N). Nitrogen stable isotopes were used to assess potential N sources for plant growth in this community. Plant tissue (leaves), cyanobacteria, and sediment were sampled once every season for one year. Total N in A. germinans (2.6 %) and associated saltwort (Batis maritima) (2.1 %) was higher than in cyanobacteria (0.6 %), …

Black History Month At The Swiss Embassy February 2020, C. Naseer Ahmad
Swiss American Historical Society Review
The Swiss Embassy in Washington has a unique place historically, diplomatically as well as culturally. It ties the United States with Switzerland in a way that no other diplomatic representative office can: the parcel of real estate on which the Swiss Ambassador’s residence is built on what was once considered as a possible location for the United States Congress.
Pricing Drugs Fairly, Govind Persad
Pricing Drugs Fairly, Govind Persad
William & Mary Law Review
Dissatisfaction with drug prices has prompted a flurry of recent legislation and academic research. But while pharmaceutical policy often regards fair pricing as a goal, the concept of fairness itself frequently goes undefined. Legal scholarship—even work ostensibly focused on fairness—has not defined and defended an account of fair pricing. Recent legislative proposals in the House and Senate have similarly avoided a determinate position on fairness. This Article explains and defends an account of what makes a price for a drug fair (identifying fair price with social value), argues for implementing fair pricing through a price ceiling grounded in social value, …
Modulation Of Bacterial Fitness And Virulence Through Antisense Rnas, Jess A. Millar, Rahul Raghavan
Modulation Of Bacterial Fitness And Virulence Through Antisense Rnas, Jess A. Millar, Rahul Raghavan
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Regulatory RNAs contribute to gene expression control in bacteria. Antisense RNAs (asRNA) are a class of regulatory RNAs that are transcribed from opposite strands of their target genes. Typically, these untranslated transcripts bind to cognate mRNAs and rapidly regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. In this article, we review asRNAs that modulate bacterial fitness and increase virulence. We chose examples that underscore the variety observed in nature including, plasmid- and chromosome-encoded asRNAs, a riboswitch-regulated as RNA, and as RNAs that require other RNAs or RNA binding proteins for stability and activity. We explore how as RNAs improve bacterial fitness …

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Joel Asaph Allen (19 July 1838 to 29 August 1921; Fig. 1) was a formative figure in the early years of the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM). Prior to the constitution of the Society, Allen had been appointed by Hartley H. T. Jackson as a member of the Committee on the Organization of the Mammal Society (Hoffmeister 1969). By all accounts a retiring individual, he was elected to honorary membership in the Society at the first meeting of the ASM (Washington, DC, 3–4 April 1919—Hoffmeister 1969). Honorary Membership is “the highest honor that the Society bestows” (Genoways and Freeman 2001).

Std Prevention: An Educational Intervention For Exotic Dancers, Maria Delurdes Dehoyos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Centers for Disease Control and prevention reported nearly 2.3 million STD cases diagnosed in 2017, and the number is continuing to rise. San Antonio, Texas, is ranked third in the state of Texas with the highest STD rates and leading in the state with congenital syphilis. There is an increased risk for contracting STDs working in the sex industry. There are little to no studies pertaining to any educational interventions offered to exotic dancers to increase personal knowledge on STDs. This research has focused on an educational intervention offered by a nurse practitioner to exotic dancers in two adults-only …

A Qualitative Study Of The Perceptions Of Elementary And Secondary Campus Administrators’ Role In Managing Teacher Stress, Cody M. Record
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teachers should oversee and provide each of their students with a high-quality educational experience during the short time they are serving the student. Moreover, teacher stress has a significant role in how teachers perform in their classrooms and often creates a substantial challenge for the campus leader to ensure that teachers perform adequately in the classroom. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand how campus leaders perceive their role in the management of teachers and what, if any, strategies are being implemented to address teacher stress. Furthermore, the study was centered on a prequestionnaire and individual interviews, …

Burgess, Thomas Roth, Daniel B. Forger, Christopher L. Drake
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
Study Objectives: A critical barrier to successful treatment of circadian misalignment in shift workers is determining circadian phase in a clinical or field setting. Light and movement data collected passively from wrist actigraphy can generate predictions of circadian phase via mathematical models; however, these models have largely been tested in non-shift working adults. This study tested the feasibility and accuracy of actigraphy in predicting dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) in fixed night shift workers. Methods: A sample of 45 night shift workers wore wrist actigraphs before completing DLMO in the laboratory (17.0 days ± 10.3 SD). DLMO was assessed via …
Investigating The Role Of Znf384 Rearrangements In Acute Leukemia, Kirsten Dickerson
Investigating The Role Of Znf384 Rearrangements In Acute Leukemia, Kirsten Dickerson
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Chromosomal rearrangements involving ZNF384 are the defining lesion in 5% of pediatric and adult B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and tumors are characterized by aberrant myeloid marker expression. Additionally, ZNF384 rearrangements are the defining lesion in nearly half of pediatric B/myeloid mixed phenotype acute leukemia. These fusions juxtapose full-length ZNF384 to the N terminal portion of a diverse range of partners, most often, transcription factors or epigenetic modifiers. It has been shown that ZNF384-rearranged tumors have a distinct gene expression profile that is consistent between disease groups and N terminal partners. Genomic analyses of patient tumors has shown that ZNF384 fusions …

Effect of global change variables on the structure and photosynthesis of phytoplankton communities was evaluated in three different sites of the Patagonian coast of Argentina: enclosed bay (Puerto Madryn, PM), estuarine (Playa Unión, PU), and open waters (Isla Escondida, IE). We exposed samples to two contrasting scenarios: Present (nutrients at in situ levels) vs. Future (with lowered pH and higher nutrients inputs), and determined growth and photosynthetic responses after 2 days of acclimation. Under the Future condition phytoplankton growth was higher in the estuarine site compared to those in PM and IE. This effect was the most pronounced on large …

Water radiolysis continuously produces H2 and oxidized chemicals in wet sediment and rock. Radiolytic H2 has been identified as the primary electron donor (food) for microorganisms in continental aquifers kilometers below Earth’s surface. Radiolytic products may also be significant for sustaining life in subseafloor sediment and subsurface environments of other planets. However, the extent to which most subsurface ecosystems rely on radiolytic products has been poorly constrained, due to incomplete understanding of radiolytic chemical yields in natural environments. Here we show that all common marine sediment types catalyse radiolytic H2 production, amplifying yields by up to 27X …
Evolution Of A Subducted Carbon-Rich Filament On The Edge Of The North Atlantic Gyre, Alexis R. Johnson, Melissa M. Omand
Evolution Of A Subducted Carbon-Rich Filament On The Edge Of The North Atlantic Gyre, Alexis R. Johnson, Melissa M. Omand
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
The oceanic biological carbon pump encompasses a variety of mechanisms by which CO2, fixed into organic form by phytoplankton, is transported from the sunlit surface layers to the interior ocean. Here, we investigate submesoscale and mixed layer subduction, estimated to represent ∼20% of global particulate organic carbon (POC) export. Seven Biogeochemical (BGC) Argo profiling floats were analyzed for evidence of subduction of POC in the North Atlantic Ocean, revealing a pattern in the seasonality. Although vertical processes that give rise to subduction are enhanced during late winter and spring, the bio-optical evidence for intrusions—namely a deep local maxima in POC, …

Pathology, East Africa
Introduction: Clostridioides difficile is a neglected pathogen in many African countries as it is generally not regarded as one of the major contributors toward the diarrheal disease burden in the continent. However, several studies have suggested that C. difficile infection (CDI) may be underreported in many African settings. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of CDI in hospitalized patients, evaluate antimicrobial exposure, and detect toxin and antimicrobial resistance profiles of the isolated C. difficile strains.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 333 hospitalized patients with hospital-onset diarrhoea were selected. The stool samples were collected and cultured on …

Effects Of Mindfulness Meditation On Selective, Sustained Attention, Brain Neural Oscillations, And Short-Term Memory, Anamaria Guzman
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The following extended literature review and research proposal study started initially as a complete research proposal but, due to the challenges COVID-19 has brought, it has become a stand-alone piece of work without data collection. The goal is to synthesize a broad range of literature and previous research on mindfulness meditation and its effects on attention, memory, and brain activity and thus, offering a new perspective and a proposed research path on this subject. This proposed research study, besides previous studies, indicates that mindfulness meditation is expected to improve and enhance selective and sustained attention, which results in better attentional …

Pharmacy
Cancer is a multifactorial disease necessitating identification of novel targets for its treatment. Inhibition of Bcl-2 for triggered pro-apoptotic signaling is considered a promising strategy for cancer treatment. Within the current work, we aimed to design and synthesize a new series of benzimidazole- and indole-based derivatives as inhibitors of Bcl-2 protein. The market pan-Bcl-2 inhibitor, obatoclax, was the lead framework compound for adopted structural modifications. The obatoclax’s pyrrolylmethine linker was replaced with straight alkylamine or carboxyhydrazine methylene linkers providing the new compounds. This strategy permitted improved structural flexibility of synthesized compounds adopting favored maneuvers for better fitting at the Bcl-2 …

- Understanding how abiotic disturbance and biotic interactions determine pollinator and flowering-plant diversity is critically important given global climate change and widespread pollinator declines. To predict responses of pollinators and flowering-plant communities to changes in wildfire disturbance, a mechanistic understanding of how these two trophic levels respond to wildfire severity is needed.
- We compared site-to-site variation in community composition (β-diversity), species richness and abundances of pollinators and flowering plants among landscapes with no recent wildfire (unburned), mixed-severity wildfire and high-severity wildfire in three sites across the Northern Rockies Ecoregion, USA. We used variation partitioning to assess the relative contributions …

Evaluation Of The Anticancer Potential Of Alchemilla Vulgaris Extract Against Human Neuroblastoma Cells, Yomna Moqidem
Evaluation Of The Anticancer Potential Of Alchemilla Vulgaris Extract Against Human Neuroblastoma Cells, Yomna Moqidem
Theses and Dissertations
Neuroblastoma is one of the most challenging pediatric tumors that present heterogeneity in prognosis and survival despite intensive treatment protocols. Therefore, there is an urge to develop novel and more potent anticancer drugs. Medicinal plants have recently gained worldwide attention due to their variable activities, wide availability, and cost-efficiency. Accordingly, this study attempted to identify novel plant extracts that could show potential anticancer properties against neuroblastoma. In this study, Alchemilla vulgaris (A.vulgaris) ethyl acetate extract was prepared and evaluated for its anticancer potential against SH-SY5Y Human neuroblastoma cell line. The Phenolic content of the prepared extract was characterized …
A Reflection On The Dialectical Relationship Of Librarian | Teacher: The Need For Pedagogical Training In Core Mlis Curriculum, Melanie C. Locay
A Reflection On The Dialectical Relationship Of Librarian | Teacher: The Need For Pedagogical Training In Core Mlis Curriculum, Melanie C. Locay
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis maps a shift in my understanding of knowledge production and teaching and learning. Teaching has a critical role in Librarianship, yet there is a glaring absence of teacher training across MLIS programs. Drawing from established literature on Critical Pedagogical theory, multiple logics of inquiry, and Critical Librarianship we can adopt practices of teaching and learning that elevate marginalized voices and center reflexive theory. This thesis includes a scope of applications of pedagogical theory to LIS practice and identifies an immediate need for an overhaul of the Master’s in Library and Information Sciences core curricula.
Framing The Border: Liminality In The Network Narratives Of Alejandro González Iñárritu, Muhammad Muzammal
Framing The Border: Liminality In The Network Narratives Of Alejandro González Iñárritu, Muhammad Muzammal
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis explores liminality conveyed as displacement before death in the network narrative films of Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu. Due to their depiction of existential crises and possibly fatal scenarios of several characters in different countries and regions, these network narrative films are colloquially referred to as the “Death Trilogy.” Therefore, rearranging the many strands of death-related abstractions and notions in these films around liminality becomes a jumping-off point to explore deeper layers of these works. Through interdisciplinary yet markedly film studies excavations, this thesis projects the liminal spaces of Iñárritu’s films onto border spaces. With borders considered as sites of …
Development And Maintenance Of The Thymic Epithelial Microenvironment, Shami Chakrabarti
Development And Maintenance Of The Thymic Epithelial Microenvironment, Shami Chakrabarti
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The thymus plays a critical role in adaptive immunity by providing a suitable microenvironment for developing and selecting the functional self-tolerant T-cell population. Thymic epithelial cells play an essential role in the development of a naïve, self-tolerant T-cell population. Paradoxically thymus undergoes acute age-related involution, which in turn causes loss of functional T-cell populations. Involution reduces the functionality of the thymus markedly, but the thymus can still develop self-tolerant naïve T-cells. It is crucial to understand how the thymic microenvironment is maintained to provide a suitable T-cell population for life. It has been previously demonstrated that the thymic epithelial homeostasis …
