A Methyl Esterase 1 (Pvmes1) Promotes The Salicylic Acid Pathway And Enhances Fusarium Wilt Resistance In Common Beans, Renfeng Xue, Ming Feng, Jian Chen, Weide Ge, Matthew W. Blair

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important food legume. Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli is one of the most serious soil-born diseases of common bean found throughout the world and affects the yield and quality of the crop. Few sources of Fusarium wilt resistance exist in legumes and most are of quantitative inheritance. In this study, we have identified a methyl salicylate esterase (MES), PvMES1, that contributes to plant defense response by regulating the salicylic acid (SA) mediated signaling pathway in response to Fusarium wilt in common beans. The result showed the role of …

Enslaved Financing Of Southern Industry: The Nesbitt Manufacturing Company Of South Carolina, 1836–1850, Sharon Ann Murphy

Economics Faculty Publications

Incorporated on the eve of the Panic of 1837, the Nesbitt Manufacturing Company of South Carolina owned and hired enslaved individuals to labor in their ironworks, but they also leveraged the market value of this enslaved property by exchanging them for shares of company stock and offering them as collateral in loan contracts. These slaveholders actively experimented with increasingly sophisticated financial tools and institutions in order to facilitate investment, market exchange, and profit maximization within the system of enslavement. Although historians have examined the role of enslaved labor in industrial concerns, they have largely ignored their role in the financing …

76-Year Decline And Recovery Of Aspen Mediated By Contrasting Fire Regimes: Long-Unburned, Infrequent And Frequent Mixed-Severity Wildfire, Cerena J. Brewen, John-Pascal Berrill, Martin W. Ritchie, Kevin Boston, Christa M. Dagley, Bobette Jones, Michelle Coppoletta, Coye L. Burnett

Aspen Bibliography

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a valued, minor component on northeastern California landscapes. It provides a wide range of ecosystem services and has been in decline throughout the region for the last century. This decline may be explained partially by the lack of fire on the landscape due to heavier fire suppression, as aspen benefit from fire that eliminates conifer competition and stimulates reproduction through root suckering. However, there is little known about how aspen stand area changes in response to overlapping fire. Our study area in northeastern California on the Lassen, Modoc and Plumas National Forests has …

Covid-19’S Lasting Impact On The Sports Industry: Financial, Legal, And Innovation, Weston, Maureen A. Feb 2021

Covid-19’S Lasting Impact On The Sports Industry: Financial, Legal, And Innovation, Weston, Maureen A.

Santa Clara Law Review

The COVID-19 pandemic has wrought unprecedented havoc across the globe. Every sector of society has been impacted and forced to change business as usual, to re-evaluate priorities and systems, and to innovate amid the unknown and possible lasting impacts of this threat to public health and commerce. Sports worldwide are also profoundly impacted. Since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020, nearly all competitive sports have been suspended, postponed, or cancelled, raising significant questions about how to deal with the severe financial impacts and legal issues, and when and how to resume play safely amid …

Tonebp Regulates The Hyperosmotic Expression Of Aquaporin 1 And 5 In The Intervertebral Disc., Joseph Snuggs, Steven Tessier, R A B Bunning, Irving Shapiro, Makarand V Risbud, Christine Lyn Le Maitre

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

The central region of the intervertebral disc (IVD) is rich in proteoglycans, leading to a hyperosmotic environment, which fluctuates with daily loading. The cells of the nucleus pulposus (NP cells) have adapted to this environment via the function of tonicity enhancer binding protein (TonEBP), and NP cells have been shown to express several water channels known as aquaporins (AQP). We have previously shown that AQP1 and 5 decrease during IVD degeneration. Here, the regulation of AQP1 and 5 by hyperosmotic conditions and the role of TonEBP in this regulation was investigated. AQP1 and 5 gene expression was upregulated by hyperosmotic …

Modeling Residual Free Chlorine In Drinking Water Distribution Systems., Mohamed Basiouny, Hisham El-Etriby

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Water is at its peak quality when it leaves the treatment plant. With time, the disinfectant residual decreases, possibly with increase in microbial activity. Changes in quality may be caused by biological or chemical transformations, by mixing of waters from different sources, or by a loss of system safety. Until recently, no much research has been made to the problem of changes in water quality in distribution system especially in Egypt. This paper applies WaterCAD simulation model for modeling water quality in the distribution systems at El-Delta Co. for Fertilizer and Chemical Industries and compares the results to field data. …

Casting Light On The Distinctive Contribution Of Social Work In Multidisciplinary Teams For Older People, Paul Willis, Liz Lloyd, Jackie Hammond, Alisoun Milne, Holly Nelson-Becker, Emma Perry, Mo Ray, Sally Richards, Denise Tanner

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

The current policy emphasis in adult social care in England is on promoting independence, preventing or delaying the need for more intensive support and the provision of personalised services. However, there is little evidence available on how social workers (SWs) identify and meet the complex needs of older service users in practice. In this article, we present findings from a study of innovative social work practice with older adults in England (2018–2019). We present five case studies of social care and integrated services in which SWs are integral team members. Twenty-one individuals participated in interviews; this included service managers and …

Cytokine Storms, Evolution And Covid-19, Joe Alcock, Alix Masters

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Since the identification of severe illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, the role of the host immune system in causing disease has attracted widespread attention, along with intense interest in medical interventions that target the host immune response. A wide variety of agents have been proposed to treat a cytokine storm in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but so far, only one class of medications, corticosteroids, has proved useful. In recent decades, experimental therapies for cytokine storms have been tried and mostly failed to help patients with severe sepsis and other infections. We summarize this history in order to frame …

An Improved Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm For Maximum Power Point Tracking Of Photovoltaic Cells In Normal And Under Partial Shading Conditions., Hend Saad, Mohamed Elksas, Sabry Saraya, Mohamed Abdelsalam

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Because of the world's acute energy crisis, the need for renewable energy sources is increasing today. In recent years, Standalone photovoltaic systems have been widely used in remote regions, following the growth of the photovoltaic cell industry. The key features of the systems of photovoltaic (PV) used to ingather solar energy while reducing the gas emissions of the greenhouse, maintenance costs are low, reduced site-related restrictions as a mechanical noise reduction due to no moving parts. Nevertheless, Photovoltaic systems are suffering from comparatively poor conversion efficiency. Hence, a PV system needs maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of the solar array. …

Preparation Of Nanoemulsion Using Lipase-Synthesized Glucose Monooleate Through Low Energy Technique, Muhammad Fakhrurazi Ahmad Fadzil

Student Works (2020-2029)

In this study, glucose monooleate (GluO) was synthesized and compared to its counterpart i.e. Tween-80 (Tw-80) and Span-80 (Sp-80) to investigate the influence of the different hydrophilic head structure of the surfactants on emulsification property. Utilizing sugar molecules like glucose as the hydrophilic head group of surfactants is of interest as it has a high potential to be used as a targeted delivery agent. The main objective of this study is to investigate the capability of lipase synthesized GluO in the formation of O/W nanoemulsion in four different types of vegetable oils that are sunflower oil, olive oil, palm oil, …

Telemetry-Validated Nitrogen Stable Isotope Clocks Identify Ocean-To-Estuarine Habitat Shifts In Mobile Organisms, Oliver N. Shipley, Alisa L. Newton, Michael G. Frisk, Gregory A. Henkes, Jake S. Labelle, Merry D. Camhi, Michael W. Hyatt, Hans Walters, Jill A. Olin

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Throughout their life history, many animals transition among heterogeneous environments to facilitate behaviours such as reproduction, foraging and predator avoidance. The dynamic environmental and biological conditions experienced by mobile species are integrated in the chemical composition of their tissues, providing retrospective insight into movement. Here, we present a unique application of nitrogen stable isotope clocks (‘isotopic clocks’), which integrate tissue turnover rates, consumer stable isotope ratios and habitat-specific isotope baselines to predict time-since-immigration and the timing of habitat shifts in a migratory species. Nitrogen stable isotope values of blood plasma collected from juvenile sand tiger sharks Carcharias taurus, a species …
