Influence Of Carbon Sources On The Pathogenicity Of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae, Travis Anthony Salinas
Influence Of Carbon Sources On The Pathogenicity Of Mycoplasma Pneumoniae, Travis Anthony Salinas
Theses and Dissertations
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a human respiratory tract pathogen and one of the best-characterized minimal bacteria. It is a serious problem because of health problems it can cause as it can be detrimental to humans and the occurrence and aggravation of systemic involvement in M. pneumoniae infection occur via multiple immunological pathways. With its major source of carbon and energy coming from phospholipids, Mycoplasma pneumoniae thrives on lung epithelia. In Mycoplasma pneumoniae, pathogenicity is closely related to carbon metabolism. By testing carbon sources in well plates and growth curves to analyze how growth is affected in Mycoplasma pneumoniae and measure optical …

Patterns Of Female Mating Preferences For Sarotherodon Caroli, From Barombi Mbo, Ileana Ruby Alvarado
Theses and Dissertations
Patterns of Female Mating Preferences for Sarotherodon caroli, from Barombi MboCichlid fish are widely studied for their explosive speciation, which has led to a distinct variety of morphological characteristics and complex reproductive strategies. Cichlids display a variety of parental care strategies, including maternal-only, paternal only, and bi-parental which differentiates them from other vertebrate families. The African cichlid Sarotherodon caroli is endemic to the crater Lake Barombi Mbo located in Western Cameroon. Sarotherodon caroli is a monogamous species and their mating strategy involves defending their territory together one week prior to spawning. The purpose of this experiment is to quantify Sarotherodon …

Evaluation Of Antimicrobial Activity & Phytochemical Analysis Of Two South Texas Species Of The Fabaceae Family, Peter Cavazos
Theses and Dissertations
The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance, as well as the evolution of new strains are of great concern to the global health community. The search for novel agents to combat the rapid evolution of bacterial pathogens becomes ever more important as current methods are proving ineffective. In the present study, the different solvent extracts (acetone, methanol, and acetic acid) of Acacia berlandieri and Acacia rigidula (leaves) were evaluated for phytochemical analysis, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Plant leaves of Acacia rigidula and Acacia berlandieri were sequentially extracted using acetone, methanol and acetic acid that were then subjected to susceptibility testing …
Generation And Characterization Of Transgenic Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Overexpressing The Novel Gene Cia7, Juan Carlos Onofre Renteria
Generation And Characterization Of Transgenic Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Overexpressing The Novel Gene Cia7, Juan Carlos Onofre Renteria
Theses and Dissertations
The constant increase in environmental pollution, in particular heavy metal pollution is alarming. Cia7, the gene understudy has conserved cysteine residues. These residues could be involved in metal binding; and the CIA7 protein might be associated to metal homeostasis in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The successful overexpression of Cia7 in C. reinhardtii could enhance its metal tolerance. The core hypothesis is that CIA7 plays a role in metal tolerance and in metal binding. The aim of this research is to characterize the Cia7 gene and to assess its potential role in metal homeostasis. The objectives of the research are (1) to overexpress …

The Effects Of Tunnel Technology On Crop Productivity And Livelihood Of Smallholder Farmers In Nepal, Diwakar Kc, Dinesh Jamarkattel, Tek Maraseni, Dilip Nandwani, Pratibha Karki
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Technologies-based production practices are critical for agricultural growth and sustainable development in low-income countries like Nepal. In the last few years, tunnel house has been increasingly promoted as tools to enhance smallholder farmers’ livelihood and tackle climate adversaries. However, little is known about what factor determines its adoption and whether it helps smallholders adapt to climate change and experience better livelihood. We address these gaps using the cross-sectional survey data collected from 62 adopters and 92 non-adopters in three municipalities of Bagmati Province. We employed descriptive analysis and probit model and found out that age, farm size, and ethnicity strongly …

A major component of COVID-19 severe respiratory syndrome is the patient’s immune response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the consequential multi-organ inflammatory response. Several studies suggested a potential role of CD4+ T cells in COVID-19 severe respiratory syndrome. We first hypothesized that there is a type 2 helper (Th2)/type 1 helper (Th1) imbalance in older age, male, asthma, smokers, and high ACE2 expression phenotype in the airway of non-infected patients. Next, we hypothesized that a Th2/Th1 imbalance may predict higher mortality in COVID-19 infected hospitalized patients with and without patient reported current asthma. We first analyzed publicly available gene expression …
Visualizing Amino Acid Substitutions In A Physicochemical Vector Space, Louis R. Nemzer
Visualizing Amino Acid Substitutions In A Physicochemical Vector Space, Louis R. Nemzer
Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles
A three-dimensional representation of the twenty proteinogenic amino acids in a physicochemical space is presented. Vectors corresponding to amino acid substitutions are classified based on whether they are accessible via a single-nucleotide mutation. It is shown that the standard genetic code establishes a “choice architecture” that permits nearly independent tuning of the properties related with size and those related with hydrophobicity. This work sheds light on the metarules of evolvability that may have shaped the standard genetic code to increase the probability that adaptive point mutations will be generated. An illustration of the usefulness of visualizing amino acid substitutions in …
Computational Investigation Of Biological Membranes, Allyson Karmazyn
Computational Investigation Of Biological Membranes, Allyson Karmazyn
Theses - ALL
Lipids are the building blocks of biological membranes, and the types of lipids that compose these cellular envelopes influence the physicochemical properties of the chemicals that can enter or exit the cell across the membrane. This work focuses on the lipid membrane compositions of eukaryotic (red blood cells) and prokaryotic (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) membranes. By analyzing the lipid-lipid and lipid-protein interactions results of the computational simulations, insights into lipid aggregation, bilayer leaflet behavior, membrane asymmetry, and small molecule transport through protein channels were obtained. The differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell membranes are qualitative known; however, this work provides these concepts …
Integrated Water Quality Monitoring Of Skaneateles Lake Tributaries, Mengyi Zhang
Integrated Water Quality Monitoring Of Skaneateles Lake Tributaries, Mengyi Zhang
Theses - ALL
Skaneateles Lake is the drinking water source for the City of Syracuse and surrounding areas. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been occurring in Skaneateles Lake every year since 2017 and posing a great threat to water quality and drinking water safety. Although the exact cause of the HABs is still unclear, sunlight, quiescent conditions, warm temperature, and elevated concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus seem to favor the development of such blooms. In this study, a custom-built, low-cost, multi-parameter sensor unit was designed, built, and deployed on a third-order tributary. The unit collected high-frequency data for stage, temperature, pH, and dissolved …

A Dosimetric Evaluation Of Increasing Scalp Sparing Between Varied Energy Photon Beams And Mlc Blocking Techniques Among Whole-Brain Irradiation Patients, Addah Riebschleger
Masters Projects
Introduction
Whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) is one of the most effective ways to treat brain metastases. Whole brain radiation therapy is typically planned 3D conformal with a right lateral and left lateral beam arrangement using a 6 mega voltage (MV) beam energy. Lower energy photon beams distribute a greater dose at surface level compared to higher energy photon beams. Using a higher energy photon beam (15 MV) to treat WBRT patients may reduce dose to the scalp and improve the patient’s overall quality of life (QOL).
Methods
The study is a retrospective dosimetric analysis of 10 randomly selected whole …

Everyday Aesthetics, Space, And The Sensory: Fear Of Crime And Affect In Inner Sydney, Murray Lee, Jonathan Jackson, Justin R. Ellis
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"In this paper we explore pre-conscious aesthetic and sensorial aspects of affect in fear of crime. Drawing on data from focus groups undertaken in inner Sydney, Australia, we link the sensory and aesthetic preconditions of fear of crime to its affective, behavioural and cognitive elements. We argue that fear is grounded in the structural, personal and inter-subjective components of individual’s lives and their interaction with physical and social environments, which then influence how individuals cognitively understand their own risks and react behaviourally to these emotional responses. By bringing alive the importance of environmental cues and the cultural and structural positions …
Tinnitus And Decreased Subcortical And Cortical Inhibition, Kenneth Vincent Morse
Tinnitus And Decreased Subcortical And Cortical Inhibition, Kenneth Vincent Morse
Dissertations - ALL
Background: The perception of tinnitus may be triggered by a reduction in inhibitory function in the central auditory nervous system. Evidence, primarily from invasive studies of animal models of tinnitus, indicates that these changes occur at both the subcortical and cortical level. Auditory evoked potential (AEP) indices of subcortical inhibition [auditory brainstem response (ABR) 〖"V/I" 〗_"amp ratio" ] and cortical inhibition [cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP) sensory gating ratios] may provide an objective index of whether reduced subcortical and/or cortical inhibition is associated with tinnitus perception in humans. The aims of this study were to assess whether ABR and/or CAEP …

Thermal And Mechanical Analysis Of Bombyx Mori Silk Nanofibers, Justin Busnot
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis presents a study on the thermomechanical properties of Bombyx Mori silk nanofibers. These nanofibers were obtained from silkworm cocoons which were degummed to separate the fibroin and the sericin, the two proteins that make up silk. The fibroin was then centrifuged to remove insoluble particles and stored and 4°C before the electrospinning process. A parametric study of the electrospinning process was carried out in order to identify the factors allowing to obtain optimal mechanical properties. The current as well as the flow rate applied, the diameter of the syringe, the distance separating the syringe from collector or even …

Disruptions to muscle protein turnover and metabolic regulation contribute to muscle wasting during the progression of cancer cachexia. The initiation of cachexia is also associated with decreased physical activity. While chronic muscle AMPK activation occurs during cachexia progression in ApcMin/+ (MIN) mice, a preclinical cachexia model, the understanding of muscle AMPK’s role during cachexia initiation is incomplete. Therefore, we examined if voluntary wheel exercise could improve skeletal muscle AMPK signaling in pre-cachectic MIN mice. Next, we examined muscle AMPK’s role in aberrant catabolic signaling in response to a 12-h fast in mice initiating cachexia. Male C57BL/6 (B6: N …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of SARS-CoV-2 testing on shortening the duration of quarantines for COVID-19 and to identify the most effective choices of testing schedules.
DESIGN: We performed extensive simulations to evaluate the performance of quarantine strategies when one or more SARS-CoV-2 tests were administered during the quarantine. Simulations were based on statistical models for the transmissibility and viral loads of SARS-CoV-2 infections and the sensitivities of available testing methods. Sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate the impact of perturbations in model assumptions on the outcomes of optimal strategies.
RESULTS: We found that SARS-CoV-2 testing can effectively reduce the …

The silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus, from the pufferfish family Tetraodontidae) and the Pacific red lionfish (Pterois miles, family Scorpaenidae) have recently invaded the Mediterranean Sea. Lagocephalus sceleratus has spread throughout this entire sea with the highest concentrations in the eastern basin, while more recently, Pterois miles has spread from the Eastern to the Central Mediterranean Sea. Their effects on local biodiversity and fisheries are cause for management concern. Here, a comprehensive review of predators of these two species from their native Indo-Pacific and invaded Mediterranean and Western Atlantic ranges is presented. Predators of Tetraodontidae in general were reviewed for their …

The surficial hydrothermal sediments of Guaymas Basin harbor complex microbial communities where oxidative and reductive nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon-cycling populations and processes overlap and coexist. Here, we resolve microbial community profiles in hydrothermal sediment cores of Guaymas Basin on a scale of 2 millimeters, using Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) to visualize the rapid downcore changes among dominant bacteria and archaea. DGGE analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons identified free-living and syntrophic deltaproteobacterial sulfate-reducing bacteria, fermentative Cytophagales, members of the Chloroflexi (Thermoflexia), Aminicenantes, and uncultured sediment clades. The DGGE pattern indicates a gradually changing downcore community structure where small …
