Grafting Interiority: Generative Methodologies Between The Natural And The Synthetic, Rana Abudayyeh Jul 2021

Grafting Interiority: Generative Methodologies Between The Natural And The Synthetic, Rana Abudayyeh

Interiority

Design is approaching a crucial period where the exchange between interior and exterior systems needs to be rethought and addressed from the standpoint of resilience and innovative environmental responses. The era of the detached interior bubble that is climate controlled and therein severed from natural systems is no longer justified or feasible. Interior spaces must respond to environmental conditions and proactively engage natural systems. The paper examines grafting methodology as an interior spatial formula that aims to generate complex sectional strategies for new programmatic typologies. It showcases work from a third-year interior architecture studio where students utilised natural landscapes as …

International Law Review In The Assassination Of General Qasem Soleimani, Dina Yulianti, Hasan Sidik, Mu'min Mu'min

Indonesian Journal of International Law

International law is formed by the global community to establish legal rules, norms, and standards of behavior between sovereign nations to create a peaceful world order. However, since the world order is anarchy with no supreme executive authority, obedience and disobedience to international law often depends on the state’s power. For instance, the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani, a prominent Iranian general, by the US military in Iraqi territory sparked a debate about international law. This article shows that the US action violated International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and International Human Rights Law (IHRL). Additionally, it violated the UN Convention for …

Suppression Of Dc-Sign And Gh Reveals Complex, Subset-Specific Mechanisms For Kshv Entry In Primary B Lymphocytes, Nancy Palmerin, Farizeh Aalam, Romina Nabiee, Murali Muniraju, Javier Gordon Ogembo, Jennifer Totonchy

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the causative agent of multiple cancers in immunocompromised patients including two lymphoproliferative disorders associated with KSHV infection of B lymphocytes. Despite many years of research into the pathogenesis of KSHV associated diseases, basic questions related to KSHV molecular virology remain unresolved. One such unresolved question is the cellular receptors and viral glycoproteins needed for KSHV entry into primary B lymphocytes. In this study, we assess the contributions of KSHV glycoprotein H (gH) and the cellular receptor DC-SIGN to KSHV infection in tonsil-derived B lymphocytes. Our results show that (1) neither KSHV-gH nor DC-SIGN are essential …

Understanding reproductive behaviours and the environmental conditions that facilitate reproduction is important for successful reproduction in managed care. Complex reproductive behaviours have been observed in both aquarium and free-ranging elasmobranchs. Sexual conflicts, including pre-copulatory behaviours in sand tiger sharks Carcharias taurus in managed care have been previously documented. This study reports observations that corroborate the previous accounts of reproductive behaviours as well as describing novel consexual conflicts between males and detailing the male dominance hierarchy in six sand tigers at the National Aquarium. The observations suggest that male behaviours are not strictly pre-copulatory, as consexual male conflicts occurred to the …

Regulation Of H2s Production And Signaling Within Vascular Endothelium, Perenkita J. Mendiola Jul 2021

Regulation Of H2s Production And Signaling Within Vascular Endothelium, Perenkita J. Mendiola

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a vasodilator primarily produced by cysthathionine

gamma-lyase (CSE) within the vasculature. Previous studies suggest there are

differences in CSE expression and the contribution of H2S to vasodilation in

different sized arteries. This led us to postulate that there are also regional

differences of regulators of H2S-mediated vasodilatory pathways.

This study examined the role of endothelial cell plasma membrane (EC

PM) cholesterol in regulating H2S-induced vasodilation and the role of

intracellular calcium [Ca2+]i in regulating CSE activity in vascular EC. We

hypothesized that CSE activation in EC by receptor-dependent second

messenger signaling enhances H2S production and subsequent …

Developing An Epitope-Based Malaria Vaccine Targeting The Circumsporozoite Protein, Lucie Jelinkova

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Malaria is a life-threatening parasitic disease that is spread to humans by mosquitos. Developing a successful vaccine for malaria has been a remarkable challenge. Plasmodium falciparum, the causative agent of malaria, is a complex organism that transforms into unique forms and infects multiple organs within the human host throughout its life cycle. In these studies we describe a virus-like particle (VLP)-based approach to developing a vaccine for malaria that targets discrete and specific sites on invading sporozoites during the pre-erythrocytic stage of infection. VLPs are noninfectious, self-assembling particles derived from viral structural proteins, and are safe and highly immunogenic. …

Dramaturgy, Split Personality And The Question Of Identity In Effiong Johnson’S Son Of The Land, Anietie Francis Udofia

International Review of Humanities Studies

The nature of man in relationship with his society is ambivalent, reflecting that human beings have the capacity to alter their personality to fit in to the situation they are confronted with at different times. This alterations result in indeterminate portrayal of human identity in creative works. No character is whole until the social condition he is pitched against justifies him. This paper evaluates Effiong Johnson’s treatment of indeterminacy of the human selves in a chaotic social milieu in Son of the Land. It uses qualitative research methodology and bases its theoretical framework on Sigmund Freud’s Psychodynamic Theory. Findings show …

Globalisation And The Question Of Loyalty In Africa:A Philosophical Reflection, Femi R. Omotoyinbo Jul 2021

Globalisation And The Question Of Loyalty In Africa:A Philosophical Reflection, Femi R. Omotoyinbo

International Review of Humanities Studies

The focus of this study is on the influence of globalisation on the patriotic loyalty of Africans to Africa. Existing discourse is quite thin regarding the relationship between globalisation and loyalty in Africa. Yet, examining such relationship is important to understand the dearth of desirable development in many African states. Taking a philosophical approach, the contention in this study is that patriotic loyalty, which is significant for development in Africa, has been distorted by the influx of globalisation into Africa. The study historically highlights how globalisation influences diversion of loyalty from the immediate community to the global community. While the …

A Tale Of Itam Tails: New Insights Into The Molecular Mechanisms That Tune Fcɛri Signaling, William K. Kanagy Jul 2021

A Tale Of Itam Tails: New Insights Into The Molecular Mechanisms That Tune Fcɛri Signaling, William K. Kanagy

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Immunoreceptor Tyrosine-based Activating Motif (ITAM) receptors are critical in sensing extracellular antigen and initiating an immune response. The ITAM receptor FcɛRI, termed the high affinity IgE receptor, is the primary promoter of inducing the Type 1 allergic response and is primarily expressed in mast cells and basophils. In this dissertation, I worked to determine how early signaling events initiated at the FcɛRI ITAM interface tune downstream signaling outcomes. I began by determining that differential phospho-tyrosine ITAM patterns produce unique recruitment profiles of the accessory kinases proteins Syk and Lyn. I next determined the differential signaling ITAM capabilities of Lyn and …

Developmental Differences In Affective Representation Between Prefrontal And Subcortical Structures, William J Mitchell, Lindsey J Tepfer, Nicole M Henninger, Susan B Perlman, Vishnu P Murty, Chelsea Helion

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Developmental studies have identified differences in prefrontal and subcortical affective structures between children and adults, which correspond with observed cognitive and behavioral maturations from relatively simplistic emotional experiences and expressions to more nuanced, complex ones. However, developmental changes in the neural representation of emotions have not yet been well explored. It stands to reason that adults and children may demonstrate observable differences in the representation of affect within key neurological structures implicated in affective cognition. Forty-five participants (25 children; 20 adults) passively viewed positive, negative, and neutral clips from popular films while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using representational …
