Essays On The Us Higher Education, Zhengren Zhu
Essays On The Us Higher Education, Zhengren Zhu
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Two-year colleges, or community colleges, are an integral part of the US higher education system. More than 40% of undergraduate enrollment occurs at the two-year level. Moreover, two-year colleges are closely related to four-year programs, as students frequently transfer between two-year programs and four-year programs. In fact, close to 50% of bachelor's degree recipients have enrolled in two-year colleges before transferring to four-year programs. The following essays discuss three topics related to the US higher education system while emphasizing two-year colleges' role in this system. The first chapter studies policies that can address the low completion rate of two-year college …

Food is a crucial necessity required by every living being on this earth in order to survive. When it comes down to the food we ingest, we want to make sure we are putting safe and healthy products into our bodies. Food corporations have cut corners in order to benefit the corporation and shareholders, which results in consequences that have been known to put human health and safety on the line. This study explores how big food corporations convicted of major food fraud crimes change their marketing methods in order to appear safer to the public. Research was conducted by …
Prerelease Reentry Programs: Posing Problems For Offenders Post-Release, Melissa Gray
Prerelease Reentry Programs: Posing Problems For Offenders Post-Release, Melissa Gray
Criminal Justice Sciences
Prison prerelease programming helps offenders develop the skills they need to successfully reintegrate back into society and provides treatment to offenders who struggle with substance abuse and mental health disorders. Prerelease programs are an important part of an offender's reentry as many offenders lack the community support needed for a healthy and safe prison to community transition. In depth interviews were conducted with reentry case managers and parole agents in Illinois to assess their perception of “what works” in relation to successful prerelease programming. Following a qualitative thematic analysis, results indicate that officers believe job skills, substance abuse treatment, utilization …
Privacy Concerns In The Digital Era: An Analysis Of The Third-Party Doctrine's Usage In The Criminal Court System, Alena Harm
Criminal Justice Sciences
This project is focused on the judicial impact of a United States Supreme Court decision in Carpenter v US (2018), which modified the judicially created “third party doctrine,” that allows law enforcement to seek information from third parties (banks, phone companies, internet providers, etc.) without the use of a search warrant. The third-party doctrine is based on the principle that when an individual conducts business with a business or organization, like a phone company or bank, they have no privacy interest in the transaction records of the user. As a result, they cannot make a claim of protection under the …

Neuropathic Pain Management Of Adult Males A Quality Improvement Project In A Correctional Facility, George Egesi
Neuropathic Pain Management Of Adult Males A Quality Improvement Project In A Correctional Facility, George Egesi
Cohort IX
Disease or a lesion of the somatosensory system can cause neuropathic pain, a common condition seen in most primary care settings, including my adult correctional setting. I became aware of this fact after completing a 10-day Reflective Practice Log (RPL). After a literature review, the recommended intervention, Duloxetine 30 mg daily for seven days with follow-up in seven days. In my practice, I prescribed Cymbalta 30 mg daily for 30 days. I used self-reporting as the neuropathic signs and symptoms along with pain severity. The literature recommended the use of a numeric rating scale of 0-10 for pain assessment and …

A Few Quick Viewpoints On Viewpoint Diversity Shareholder Proposals, Joan Macleod Heminway
Scholarly Works
This commentary essay represents a brief response to Professor Stefan Padfield’s "An Introduction to Viewpoint Diversity Shareholder Proposals" (22 TRANSACTIONS: TENN. J. BUS. L. 271 (2021)). I am especially interested in two aspects of Professor Padfield’s article on which I comment briefly in turn. First and foremost, I focus in on relevant aspects of an academic and popular literature that Professor Padfield touches on in his article. This literature addresses an area that intersects with my own research: the diversity and independence of corporate management (in particular, as to boards of directors, but also as to high level executive officers--those …

Migrant Or Menace: Media Representations Of The Migrant Caravan, Elizabeth Twitty, Erica Bower
College of Arts and Letters Posters
In March 2018, the Pueblo Sin Fronteras migrant caravan began making their way to the U.S. border, drawing political and media attention from the United States. News coverage of immigrants and migration events have historically been linked to negative topics and framed as threats to the American way of life. These negative themes emerged against the backdrop of the Trump administration’s response to the caravan, describing migrants as threats to U.S. border security. To examine how the news media portrayed this event, we conducted a summative content analysis of online news articles from CNN and Fox News covering the 2018 …

Using The Iied Tort To Address Discrimination And Retaliation In The Workplace, Alex B. Long
Using The Iied Tort To Address Discrimination And Retaliation In The Workplace, Alex B. Long
Scholarly Works
Citing the need to preserve managerial discretion, courts frequently espouse the need to adopt an “especially strict approach” in cases of intentional infliction of emotional distress (IIED) in the workplace. As a result, the IIED tort currently has a limited role to play in the fight against workplace discrimination and harassment. At the same time, a few courts – almost undetected in the literature on the subject - have recognized that one form of employer conduct may merit special treatment when assessing an IIED claim against an employer. According to these courts, the fact that an employer has engaged in …

Fighting Human Trafficking And Exploitation Through The Power Of Local Policy And Programs: Analysis And Recommendations, Abby Torrice
Community Engagement Student Work
While the United States has made great strides since 2000 to combat human trafficking federally, there is still much to be done. This capstone project provides a comprehensive understanding of key terms related to human trafficking. These terms are then used to provide context to the reality of the issue of human trafficking and exploitation in our world today, and specifically the United States. Although human trafficking legislation has made swift advances at the federal level since 2000 and states have followed suit in creating their own policies, local municipalities and communities have an immense amount of power in creating …

Risk Transfer Militarism And The Iraq War, Kathleen H. Bannon
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
President Barack Obama's military and political strategies during the withdrawal period from January 2009 to December 2011 of Operation Iraqi Freedom (IOF) effectively mitigated the risks of the U.S. forces stationed within the region while also ensuring influence over regional actors' trained military counterparts. By restructuring core military programs, leveraging civilian partnerships, and enacting new military doctrines, the U.S. engaged within the latest iteration of risk-transfer militarism

Brains Versus Brawn: Militarization And Women In Modern Policing, Emilee Shae Eversole
Honors Theses
This work explores the paramilitarism that has taken policing by storm over the last few decades, the adverse effects caused by it, and what women in policing do to counteract them. Previous research has shown that some individuals believe this type of militarization of policing has severed the relationship between law enforcement officials and their communities, and false beliefs regarding the ability of women to serve as police officers seem to run rampant. However, newer research suggests that women in policing provide a refreshing contrast to this paramilitarism through less invasive tactics, resulting in a more trusting relationship between officers …

Three Essays On Political Responses To Opioid Use In The United States, Lilla Orr
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In the first two decades of the 21st century, opioid use in the United States has grown to unprecedented levels. Approximately half of the U.S. adult population has been prescribed an opioid based pain reliever, 1.7 million people have an opioid use disorder, and nearly 50,000 people die of opioid related overdoses each year. Public attitudes and drug policy have transformed in the wake of this staggering loss of life. These changes are often attributed to the racial, socioeconomic, and geographic profile of those most affected by the overdose and addiction epidemic, as well as the perceived culpability of physicians, …

A Comparison Of Public Defenders Vs. Private Attorneys, Tiffany Costello
Honors Senior Capstone Projects
This study seeks to determine whether there are any differences in conviction rates or client satisfaction between public defenders and private attorneys in state or federal courts. Although researchers have spent time examining differences between attorney type and client satisfaction or conviction rates, little information exists on the assessment of attorney type in the federal system. The study will consist of a two-part survey with approximately twenty-seven closed-ended questions about client satisfaction, conviction, court, and attorney type. The target population will be any criminal defendant in federal or state court with an attorney. In this study, the sampling method will …
