Challenging The Dominant Representation Of Immigrant Latinas In The United States: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Personal Stories Of Latina Pioneers From The 1950-1970s, Scarlett Rodriguez
Challenging The Dominant Representation Of Immigrant Latinas In The United States: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Personal Stories Of Latina Pioneers From The 1950-1970s, Scarlett Rodriguez
Research Papers
The dominant representations of Latinx immigrants in the U.S. media do a disservice to the humanity of this group and overwhelmingly depict them in negative ways. This paper is an effort to counter these narratives and humanize the experiences of Latina immigrants. Specifically, it explores and analyzes four personal narratives from Latina women who migrated to the United States between 1950-1970s. The methodological approach in this report is qualitative and interpretive analysis, using open and axial coding. The author discusses how identities are constructed and shaped by the experiences of immigration, and connects it to extant research on power, coloniality, …

Automated Actuator Lubing Station, Logan Haid, Heather Sommers, Joshua Cummings, John Maly
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
For our senior design project, we partnered with Swagelok to create a working prototype of an automatic lubrication system that would allow for consistent application of a lubricant dispersed on the inside of a Swagelok-manufactured part. This device needed to be simple enough in design and operation so that Swagelok operators could properly lubricate the specific area on the inside of an actuator on a routine basis. The device created has a cylindrical housing that, when loaded with an actuator, will stabilize the part as a pneumatic cylinder drives a lubricant-dispensing head up into the actuator. As the cylinder retracts, …

Sorority And Fraternity Life: Examining Racial Discourse Via Institutional Websites, Crystal E. Garcia, William Walker, Samantha E. Bradley, Kathleen Smith
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
Scholarship has provided some insight into inequities that exist within sorority and fraternity life (SFL), whereas members of culturally based sororities and fraternities within Multicultural Greek Councils (MGC) and National Pan-Hellenic Councils (NPHC) report being treated as inferior to those in historically white organizations. However, few studies have examined institutional efforts to render culturally based sororities and fraternities visible to campus communities. This qualitative critical discourse analysis examined how SFL offices at 18 research universities in the southeastern United States communicated information about councils through institutional SFL web pages. Findings show that few communities attempted to represent council information equally, …
What’S In A Photograph? The Perspectives Of Composition Experts On Factors Impacting Visual Scene Display Complexity For Augmentative And Alternative Communication And Strategies For Improving Visual Communication, Kevin Pitt, John W. Mccarthy
What’S In A Photograph? The Perspectives Of Composition Experts On Factors Impacting Visual Scene Display Complexity For Augmentative And Alternative Communication And Strategies For Improving Visual Communication, Kevin Pitt, John W. Mccarthy
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Purpose: Visual scene displays (VSDs) can support augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) success for children and adults with complex communication needs. Static VSDs incorporate contextual photographs that include meaningful events, places, and people. Although the processing of VSDs has been studied, their power as a medium to effectively convey meaning may benefit from the perspective of individuals who regularly engage in visual storytelling. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perspectives of individuals with expertise in photographic and/or artistic composition regarding factors contributing to VSD complexity and how to limit the time and effort required to apply principles …
Catholic Agency In International Society: An International Relations Analysis Of The Santa Marta Group, Marianne L. Rozario
Catholic Agency In International Society: An International Relations Analysis Of The Santa Marta Group, Marianne L. Rozario
Theses
This research examines the issue of Catholic agency in the academic discipline of International Relations (IR). Situated in the IR discourse on religion, its investigation is based on a select Catholic initiative in the international anti-slavery realm named the Santa Marta Group (SMG). It is a transnational Catholic-initiated and led coalition of predominantly Catholic and state actors collectively working together to eradicate modern slavery and human trafficking. I specifically analyse dimensions of the SMG from April 2014 to May 2018. Methodologically, a mixed-methods approach is adopted, combining a desk review and key informant interviews. This thesis has two interrelated questions …
