Investigation Of Fluorescence In Selected Mammals Of Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, Terry L. Tumlison

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The adaptive value of fluorescence among the vertebrates has been studied most in fishes and birds, and only a few observations have been published regarding fluorescence in the pelage of mammals. Recently, reports of fluorescence in some marsupials, the platypus, and in flying squirrels have become available. We report the occurrence of fluorescent properties in some mammals from Arkansas. Most carnivores, bats, and rodents did not exhibit the property when viewed under UV light. However, opossums, rabbits, a weasel, muskrats, and moles showed substantial UV response, and a few other mammals showed minor fluorescence. Colors fluoresced included pink, green, and …

To Influence?: Exploring The Socio-Ecology Of Zoo-Morphic Imagery On The Northern Colorado Plateau, Ralph J. Hartley

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

TO INFLUENCE?: EXPLORING THE SOCIO-ECOLOGY OF ZOO-MORPHIC IMAGERY ON THE NORTHERN COLORADO PLATEAU

Figurative zoo-morphic imagery is but one of a broad variety of created morphologically distinct depictions that can be used, both in isolation and in complexly configured modes of communication, to exploit the sensory responses of viewers. While contemporary observations of zoo-morphic petroglyphs and pictographs (i.e. rock-art) elicit varied interpretations and assignments of meaning relative to broader re-constructions of past socio-cultural systems, it is often assumed that the imagery reflects the creator’s intimate knowledge of behavior and habitat of the subject. In contemporary and recent historic times communicating …

Telementoring For Breast Surgeons Practicing In Remote Areas, Fatima Mubarik, Hania Shahzad, Syeda Sakina Abidi, Sana Zeeshan, Lubna Mushtaque Vohra, Sadaf Khan, Abida Khalil Sattar

Medical College Documents

Telementorship allows an expert surgeon to mentor another surgeon through an advanced procedure from a remote location via 2-way audio-visual communication. The current article was planned to review the existing literature and evaluate the utility of telementorship regarding educating rural surgeons in Pakistan about multidisciplinary breast cancer care. Publications from 2016 to 2020 were searched on PubMed and GoogleScholar and 10 most recent publications were selected. Review of literature revealed that even though telementorship in this context might be comparable to onsite mentorship, multiple concerns need to be addressed before its implementation. These include lack of concrete evidence regarding its …

The Ecology Of Puha: Identity, Orientation, And Shifting Perceptions Reflected Through Material Culture And Socioreligious Practice, Aaron Robert Atencio Jan 2021

The Ecology Of Puha: Identity, Orientation, And Shifting Perceptions Reflected Through Material Culture And Socioreligious Practice, Aaron Robert Atencio

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This dissertation explores the assertions that changes in form, function, practice, and perceptions of puha primarily arose from the dispossession of landscapes and oppression of specific religious practices due to Euro-American contact, resource depletion, and reservation confinement. The reservation era placed the indigenous populace into a state of purgatory where treaties and peace relations were consistently repositioned and reneged. The perceptions of the indigenous inhabitants pre and post Euro-American contact detail critical moments that assisted in shaping the dynamic relationship between socioreligious perceptions and the Eastern Shoshone’s identity. What is displayed is a unique set of circumstances that assisted in …

The Role Of Entertainment Media In Promoting Culture : The Case Of Japanese Cartoons And Superhero Tv Series In 80s-90s Thai Society, Thanayod Lopattananont

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This research delved into the specificity of Japanese cartoons and superhero tv series during the 80s-90s based on two questions; how their content familiarized the Thai audience with the culture of Japan and what impact they have delivered. Content analysis, audience analysis, and document research were used as the research methodology. The discovery suggested that Japanese cartoons and superhero tv series were culturally powerful. Their presentation of the local culture was comprehensible, repetitive, and joyous, causing the audience to be connected to the culture of Japan with ease. Each cartoon and superhero tv series also possessed high entertainment quality that …

≥I++ Wayward Self, Space, And Language, Mystie Do, Thu Tm Do

Theses and Dissertations

Having crossed different geographical and cultural borders, I can’t seem to position myself beyond society’s forced binaries of race, sexuality, and materiality. My personal diasporic experience drives me to bring together various presences, putting them next to one another, engaging them in dialogues. My works often share multiple space–time possibilities: a digital space, a physical site, a virtual alternity. Occupying these parallel worlds are varied ratios of mixtures of natural ecosystems, my own system of abstraction, and existing technological systems that allow us a level of individual engagement not previously available. I want to invite people to fluctuate between these …

An Escapist Utopia, Sara Eh Denney Jan 2021

An Escapist Utopia, Sara Eh Denney

Theses and Dissertations

As an active pursuit of avoiding excellence, my work acts as a space for failure, play, experimentation and imperfection. This document and final installation acts as a pause along a lifelong journey of object-making, creation, and spirituality. My work, specifically my working practice, rather than any one object or moment, is an escapist utopia for myself. My work is the process, the journey, not the ending or the completion of any one thing. The repetition, distortion, and production that I engage throughout my working practice acts as a spiritual exercise of meaning—making through creation. I fall deeply in love with …

A Novel Hybrid Decision-Based Filter And Universal Edge-Based Logical Smoothingadd-On To Remove Impulsive Noise, Rajanbir Singh Ghumaan, Prateek Jeet Singh Sohi, Nikhil Sharma, Bharat Garg Jan 2021

A Novel Hybrid Decision-Based Filter And Universal Edge-Based Logical Smoothingadd-On To Remove Impulsive Noise, Rajanbir Singh Ghumaan, Prateek Jeet Singh Sohi, Nikhil Sharma, Bharat Garg

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a novel hybrid filter along with a universal extension to remove salt and pepper noise even at a very high noise density. The proposed filter initially specifies a threshold and then denoises the image using a combination of linear, nonlinear, and probabilistic techniques. Furthermore, to improve the quality, a universal add-on is presented which uses edge detection and smoothening techniques to brush out fine details from the restored image. To evaluate the efficacy, the proposed and existing filtering techniques are implemented in MATLAB and simulated with benchmark images. The simulation results show that the proposed filter is …

Efficient Hybrid Passive Method For The Detection And Localization Of Copy-Moveand Spliced Images, Navneet Kaur, Neeru Jindal, Kulbir Singh

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Digital passive image forgery methods are extensively used to verify the authenticity and integrity of images.Splicing and copy-move are the most common types of passive digital image forgeries. Several approaches have beenproposed to detect these forgeries separately, but very few approaches are available that can detect them simultaneously. However, a more e?icient method is still in demand to meet the day-to-day challenges to detect these forgeries at thesame time. So, a passive hybrid approach based on discrete fractional cosine transform (DFrCT) and local binarypattern (LBP) is proposed to detect copy-move and splicing forgeries simultaneously. The extra parameter i.e. fractionalparameter of DFrCT …

diagrammatics and the visualization of legal data and other information

in legal instruments and communications.

The Proactive Law movement and the Legal Design movement each

seek to transform legal instruments and documents to improve access to and

comprehension of the communication of law to all persons. “All persons”

includes both law-trained and non-law-trained persons and extends from the

literate and educated all the way to disadvantaged, illiterate, and less-thanfully

literate persons. The overall goal of the Proactive Law movement and a

primary goal of Legal Design is to …

Cartoon Contracts And The Proactive Visualization Of Law, Michael D. Murray Jan 2021

Cartoon Contracts And The Proactive Visualization Of Law, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Contracts have always relied on text first, foremost, and usually exclusively. Yet, this approach leaves many users of contracts in the dark as to the actual meaning of the transactional documents and instruments they enter into. The average contract routinely uses language that only lawyers, law-trained readers, and highly literate persons can truly understand.

There is a movement in the law in the United States and many other nations called the visualization of law movement that attempts to bridge these gaps in contractual communication by using highly visual instruments. In appropriate circumstances, even cartoons and comic book forms of sequential …
